I have no idea what I'm doing; I just know I want to start.

I'm a Druid by nature, but I'd like to take this opportunity to step outside my comfort zone.  I want to lift heavy shit and find the muscles that I know are hiding in my squishies.

I really hope so!  I've always been terrified of strength training.  I don't know where the fear comes from...probably just the fear of having bad form and hurting myself.

Former druid and newbie weight lifting enthusiast here.  Good to see you @LittleTurtle !   I think the best advice to avoid injury is to focus on form with little weight and only move up after your form is pretty good (don't aim for perfect, or you'll never do the movements with any weight), but then again, I'm a newbie, so I'm probably not the best to give advice.

I'm all about spreadsheets for tracking, so look at this little beauty I've created! 

 

Also, I used to only weigh myself once a week (if that), but yesterday I read this interesting article about how doing it everyday for a few weeks can be beneficial.  I don't know how much stock I'll actually put into it since weight loss isn't really my goal, but changing it up for a bit can't hurt anything, right?

 

For my workout tonight, I will do some warm-up stuff, do some bodyweight stuff, do some dumbbell stuff, and then some cool-down stuff.  I'll track everything into my spreadsheet for a baseline.   

 

My BIG WHY to keep me focused:  Theatre, theatre, theatre.  There is a role that I want for an upcoming play, and if I get it, I will be on stage...scantily clad...in front of people...with eyes...  And I WILL get that role.  I WILL wear that outfit.  And I WILL rock the shit out of it.

Hello, former druid!  Thanks for the beginner's advice!  I'll tell you - it took me months to figure out proper bodyweight squat form.  I still think I'm a little off, but I'm way better than I used to be - progress, not perfection, I always say.  :frog:

Thanks for the welcome!  I'm really super excited to be here!  I've only ventured outside the Druids once before, so it's nice to feel welcome!   I'm legitimately excited for ALL THE MUSCLES!!!

DEAR LORD, WARRIORS!!  How in the eff do you all deal with the DOMS?!?!  I can hardly sit on the toilet today from a few measly squats!  I am in awe of all of you!

Thanks!  I really liked the bench presses!  Not so much with the OHPs...  And bar hangs are super fun, but I think I'm going to need some gloves.

 

The role is a VERY tiny part in a farce called "Nana's Naughty Knickers".  Earlier this year, I had a lead role in "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance", and I'm going to audition for a larger part in "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time" early next year, so I want a small role for now to keep me occupied without all the extra work in the meantime.  :frog:

Stick with it. Eventually the DOMS go away and you can walk again :) Something something your body adapts...

 

Or sometimes they don't. and then DOMS is life.

You'd be surprised that if you have fairly bad DOMS, you can do a couple sets of bodyweight squats and it'll take the edge off.  After a couple sessions, you don't really get DOMS anymore from movements you've recently done at comparable weight.  However, if you don't squat for a month, the DOMS can come back even harder.

Yeah, if you keep lifting regularly enough then they go away. But till then, get used to walking like a MiB villain for a bit.

As mentioned, the longer you stick with it, the less DOMs you'll get. I rarely ever get DOMs... except, for some reason, when I do lunges - that gets me every time.

all the things they said re: DOMS. we've all been there with the not being able to sit down on the toilet :lol:

 

also OHP is annoying. but it's even worse after a bench set. you mayyyyyyyy feel better about it if it was on it's own.

I have had quite possibly the most stressful week at work in my entire life.  When I am this stressed...I forget to eat.  Now, I'm stressed AND starving so all I really want is pizza.  My boyfriend just informed me that we're having leftover fajitas.  *sigh*  But Turtle wants pizzzzzzzaaaa.......

Okay....so at first, when I read your comment, I was thinking, "Are you high?!  I can't do more squats today!!"  And then I pissed and moaned for awhile before finally taking your advice and doing a couple squats.  You were right.  It totally took the edge off.  So thanks for that!  :frog:

Ooooooh!!  Lunges are the worst!  Aside from burpees....

I hope your DOMS is feeling better.  Looks like you got some good advice.  I think it took me about two weeks of getting used to all the moves in my workout before they didn't leave me sore the next day anymore.  Except lunges.  I dropped them from my workout.

I'm still super stressed at work.  Thankfully, I'm only 5 days away from auditions.  Theatre makes me happier than anything else in the world.  I should be working out more, but I've been reading the script a lot in my free time to be prepared.

 

Also - when I'm super stressed, I have two modes.  Don't eat at all or eat all the things.  There is no in between.
