Help me help my boyfriend? Unusual job problem...also Welders?

Recommended Posts

I'm using google to help too, but I want to see if anyone has ideas here. The problem: my boyfriend is unhappy with his job. He's looking for new jobs, but he keeps just settling because he doesn't know what he wants to do...let me explain:

He hates office jobs and can't stand to sit still for long periods of time. BUT doctor's orders...he can't be in sunlight for extended periods of time because of a skin condition. So what jobs will let someone move around and stay busy, but not be outdoors? As you can imagine, most people try to hook him up with outdoor jobs, like construction...but he can't! No jobs that require him to sit through many classes (where you sit all day).

Any occupation suggestions?

Note, he is interested in being a welder but is concerned that not being able to work outside much would greatly limit his opportunities.

Thanks in advance!

Check into manufacturing shops. If he's anywhere near the Twin Cities, MN, we do have some openings

I have not worked as a professional welder, but went through 2 certification programs at the local tech college.

First, if sunlight is an issue, welding might be an issue too. He'd be wearing protective clothing most of the time, but welding can cause sunburns very easily on exposed skin. Something he might want to research if he's never welded before.

If he just likes working with his hands, maybe something like a maintenance person for a factory or building. Having to know a little bit about a whole lot of things (electrical, plumbing, building stuff specific for the building). Or honestly, even working in a factory. I know it's not a dream career for anyone, but you are on your feet most of the day, it's indoors, and the pay is usually pretty solid.

I work in the Administrative Services: Office Service Unit. We are the Central Nervous System for the entire Agency, I personally oversee the Mail room, Print shop, Supplies, office equipment and help with the Carpool, Office moves, room set ups. We really don't sit and we get to use our brains along with our brawn. Most of entry level jobs in this field do not require a degree, and depending on your attitude and your situation, you can move up the ladder in the field.

Shelf stocking keeps you moving and indoors, but the pay isn't great.  Janitor/custodian pays better, bartending even better, auto (bus, truck...) mechanic even better.

He could also pick an outdoor job that lets him work at night, such as security, road construction, golf course maintenance, etc.

Performance artists (actors, musicians, standup comics, magicians, clowns, dancers, etc) often get indoor and night venues and stay on their feet, but it's obviously not a steady living for most performers.

UV thrown off from the welding arc can give you the nastiest "sunburn" of your life. As mentioned above we take precautions, but I can't say it is totally avoidable.

There are some aspects of the field that might appeal though. I did submerged arc welding for a while and despite the heat there wasn't much risk of UV exposure. I never did it personally but there are folks who babysit automated welding machines...

If he just wants to work in manufacturing there are a lot of things he could do. I know plenty of CNC operators.
