I fly out to Menorca tomorrow for a week's holiday in the sun. Sounds like a terrible time to start a daily log! So let's do it!

Calendar:

30 Aug 2018: this post

28 Sep 2018: re-think how the log is used

Flight delayed for over 7 hours but we made it! Naturally, this led to eating a lot of airport food (breakfast baguette, lunch panini). Dinner was paella and then sorbet. No swimming today as we didn't get here til dinnertime. Sleepy times now. It's amazing how tiring it can be to sit in one place and wait to be told whether they have a plane for you.

Oh also I ate a goddamn ton of Skittles because WHSmith didn't have the kind of travel sweets I like for flying? Will try and buy my sweets in advance for the flight back.

My sister had chicken stuffed with sobresada, in honey dressing - she said it was good, but strange to have such sweet flavours with chicken.

Snorkelling today! Dinner was roasted quails with chips, at a barbecue place. I stuck to my rule of not finishing other people's plates, there was a lot of roast pork left over. Tomorrow, the bus into Mahon for shopping.

Edit: The coffee is also very good here. I'm very into coffee.

Here's me going off to the beach

Wednesday: We went to Cala en Porter which is very pretty, beautiful views over the beach. I had shark for lunch, mainly so I could say 'I had shark for lunch'.

Tried to beat a few more quests! I can now swim 50m (without much grace or style, mind you) and do 10 unassisted bodyweight squats, although only just. I need to step back to assisted squats until I can do several sets.

Snorkelled for at least three hours today, I'm hooked. The big hit was a couple of big Ornate Wrasse which didn't care about me at all, just kept on eating about a foot from my face. Also saw sea urchins, lots of interesting fish I couldn't identify (I'm new at this) and a smallish ray that was trundling along the seabed cleaning away the weed and debris from a circle of sand, then moving along and making a new circle. You keep doing whatever it is you're doing, ray.

We have dinner reservations tonight but it's raining, I hope it stops. Back to England tomorrow! Home in time for tea.

This is the awesome cat who hangs around the villa we rented. Fearsome slayer of small lizards. Sometimes we give her bits of ham.

Edit: I had ensaimada after dinner last night (dinner was pasta), it was great. It was less sweet than I expected, really tasty.

Friday: we flew home, plane wasn't delayed which was nice. I had a bag of sweets for the plane but the rest of the day I ate Real Food (TM)

On returning to my flat I was tempted to get takeout but I distracted myself by organising the photos I took on the trip, and playing Two Point Hospital.

Post-holiday weigh-in: 275lb!

Minor disaster: I didn't top up my electricity meter before I went away, and there wasn't as much credit on there as I thought, so my fridge-freezer has been switched off for about three days and everything has gone off. Oh well. Off to the shops.

Less rainy! But I don't go anywhere on Sundays, generally. I have to get up and put clothes on and see people Monday through Friday, that's quite enough.

Sundays are for tidying up the house, so I did the washing-up and a load of laundry, refilled the bird feeder, brought the clothes airer in out of the rain. I also did something I've been meaning to do, which is label all the kitchen cupboards! I asked for a labelmaker for Christmas. I wrote things like 'MUGS' and 'PLATES' and 'BAKING TINS'. Now everything has its own place, and this removes the step 'decide where each thing goes' from the task 'put things away'. That's very important when your executive function is kind of messed up like mine is. I saw it in the serve-yourself kitchen at Ziferblat cafe in Manchester, and loved it immediately.

Also, 'BLENDER' now has its own cupboard. I wasn't sure if it deserved one, and then I immediately cut myself trying to separate the immersion blender blades from some piping-bag tips. Only a very slight cut, I'm fine.

An old friend contacted me and asked if she can come along to my board-games night tomorrow, which I've not even been going to, because socialising is hard. That'll be awesome, to have someone to go with.

Back to the office tomorrow!

No exercise, just pottering around the house. Wasn't wearing my tracking watch, mostly.

Calories: 1400

P.S. keeping this diary is very helpful, I often get takeout on Sunday nights and this has helped me avoid it, because I'd have to tell other people I did it. I always track my calories but it doesn't do much good when you're the only person who sees it. I am not inclined to tell lies but I am inclined to eat fried chicken.

Today was wonderful! I did go to the board-games night with my friend, and we had great fun. She liked it and she's coming back to the next one in a fortnight. She had been worried she wouldn't understand the games and would feel stupid, I had been worried they'd judge me for missing so many meetings - we both got something out of the night.

Work is good too - I like my job. Nothing spectacularly good or bad happened at work. I took a sandwich for lunch, and bought packaged food to eat before board-games night as I didn't have time to go home and eat. I'll plan that better next time. I budgeted calories for it, though.

Steps: 8500

Calories: 1600

Today I weighed in at just under 19.5 stone! That's 273lb. I feel hugely encouraged by passing that first half-stone mark.

P.S. I got my Audouin's Gull sighting confirmed on iNaturalist! Another tick for the life list. Isn't s/he cute?

A frustrating day. My fortnightly planning meeting ran long, as it always does, and I don't do well with a 3-hour meeting. I left work early and successfully avoided eating food, but then I tried to watch Bake Off tonight and my All4 stream kept cutting out. I missed the whole technical challenge, and the end. Consoling myself with stories on AO3, and NOT with food. I guess I have to learn to do this. Food is so reliable and comforting :(

Steps: don't know, left my watch in the other room and it's cosy in here. Only to the bus stop and back

Calories: 1300

Lifehack for not buying McDonalds after work, or going to Tesco on the way home and buying junk food: leave your debit card at home. It makes it impossible to give in to those urges but it doesn't make them go away!!

earlyposting 11AM: Ech, last night went wrong. I ate a whole package of tortillas overnight, ~900 calories. But I know why! Lunch yesterday was WAY too heavy, I used up all my calories halfway through the day. Gotta spread it out.

Also I might have to just not buy tortillas, which is a shame.

will edit in today's report later

Steps: 10000

Calories: maybe 2500 including the tortillas

D&D night was wonderful, reminded me there are more important things than calories.

iNaturalist is a handy app/website where you can post sightings of anything in nature (plants, animals, etc) and people will try to identify exactly what you saw. We make maps of confirmed sightings, and I think scientists have even used the site to see where different species have been sighted over time.

I mostly just use it to track my birdwatching list, and interesting plants I see when I'm out and about. This is my page: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/geeoharee

More jogging today! More fun! The start of Zombies 5K is only 15-second running drills, managed to get surprisingly sweaty anyway. That said, it's 99.5% humidity here all year round anyway, so sweat is something I'm all too familiar with.

I've had some onions set aside for onion jam, which I love to put on cheese sandwiches, and I finally got round to making that today. I chopped enough onions for two jars before I got fed up of how much my eyes hurt, so I have a few onions left, I'll find other uses for those.

Here's a recipe: https://www.taste.com.au/recipes/red-onion-jam/ec8a48ad-f9f9-4866-8f50-25c901d7d1ce

Most recipes include red wine, but I'm a non-drinker and prefer not to buy it if I don't have to.

Ugh, it's raining. I agreed to give a talk at work this Friday, so I have to prepare for that. Today was nice, though, I went for a walk at lunchtime.

Did Jim's bodyweight workout! I thought I had to be able to do 10 reps but that's silly, 5 will do if that's all I can manage (and it is).

Wednesday: OK, so Wednesday didn't work. I thought I was being really sensible having a hearty breakfast, I forgot it was the boss's compulsory pizza lunch day. And then the actual meeting before the pizza was really stressful, and I felt all thrown off the rest of the day. So I bought junk food and over-ate in the evening, too.

Thursday is a new day!

Habit-hacking: My shower is really bad and sprays water mostly onto the wall and not onto me, so I replaced the showerhead. Now I can shower in comfort, and will be more likely to have a wash.

Steps: 6500

Calories: hahaha
