Shello Searches for her Inner Wonder Woman

I'm hoping to carry over from a successful challenge in hopes of another.  I'm still a long way from where I used to be but for the first time in a long while, I'm happy with where I am now and the progress I am making.   The format from the past couple of challenges has served me well but I still have not perfected the streak.  I plan to stick to the same format until I earn the 1,000,000 bonus points for a perfect streak... or until I realize I can't... and well, admitting defeat is not an option.  Only this time around, I'm just going to make it more difficult.  The goals are a bit tougher and there are less streak savers to help me achieve success.

Food Goal

I got further and further away from eating 'clean' but using it as a guide helps me stay under my target.  I'm going to stick with what works only I've trimmed my MFP calorie target.  Last challenge it was set to 1900 though I rarely got that close to it.  So I've shaved that down to 1800 just to eliminate the temptation.  The points are the same though I will admit that I haven't put that much thought into the 1 and 2 point goals since I am aiming for 3 points every day.

  • 3 points for staying under calorie goal or eating 100% clean
  • 2 points for maintaining a deficit of at least 750 calories (per Fitbit)
  • 1 point for eating at least 3 freggies

Fitness Goal

I was pretty consistent last challenge but I'm still not putting that much effort in.  My 'workouts' are bare minimum and barely deserve to be called workouts.  I've been feeling the urge to pick up the plates again and start lifting but I'm holding off on reinstating my fancy gym membership until my office moves across town in November.  I can go for walks, rucks, or do some tire swinging but I have really been struggling with pushing myself.  I need something prescribed so it's back to Darebee.   I'll follow Athena's Playbook for the entirety of the challenge.  My challenge begins today and will end on the last Friday of the challenge, 32 days.  That means I can skip only 2 days in order to complete the 30 day program.  I will juggle the workouts as needed for time but I plan to complete 1 every day.

  • 3 points for completing the Athena workout of the day
  • 2 points for getting at least 8,000 steps
  • 1 point for doing at least some activity

Chain Bonuses: The streak has motivated many workouts and I'm more determined than ever to get the 1,000,000 point bonus.  Bonuses are tweaked a little for this 32 week challenge.  There are less streak bonuses and they only add a +1 to whatever my score is, rather than an automatic 3 points.

Achieving at least 1 point for either goal awards the following points:

7 days = 1 bonus point

10 days = 3 bonus points

15 days = 5 bonus points

21 days = 15 bonus points

27 days = 25 bonus points

32 days = 100 bonus points

Achieving at least 2 points for either goal awards the following points:

3 days = 1 bonus point

7 days = 3 bonus points

10 days = 5 bonus points

15 days = 10 bonus points

21 days = 25 bonus points

27 days = 50 bonus points

32 days = 1,000 bonus points

Achieving at least 3 points for either goal awards the following points:

3 days = 3 bonus point

7 days = 5 bonus points +1 Streak Saver

10 days = 10 bonus points

15 days = 20 bonus points +1 Streak Saver

21 days = 50 bonus points

27 days = 500 bonus points +1 Streak Saver

32 days = 1,000,000 bonus points

Week 0 Day 1

So I spent the whole daying running around from one obligation to the next.  Things finally settled down around 9 or so.  I went to get my jammies on and then it suddenly dawned on me that my challenge started and I needed to do a workout!  I almost biffed it before it even started. But Athena's Playbook day 1 happened.  Cardio day.  I only did the minimum 3 rounds for level 1 since it's normally a rest day since I have no freaking time.

Food could have been better.  It was a weird day with a very low appetite.  I stayed well under target but still made poor choices.  I basically only ate as a precaution against future hangries.  I had my lunch a bit late and still hasn't all that hungry by dinner.  But we had scouts so I figured I would get hungry eventually.  I had a taco but even though I wasn't really hungry, it was so good I had another which I immediately regretted.  Luckily, there were plenty of calories left to have too much angel food cake and berries that I didn't need because I still wasn't hungry. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Food - not clean but under target: +3 pts

3 point streak: 1 day

Fitness - Day 1 complete, 7000 steps: +3 pts

3 point streak: 1 day

Total Points: 6

Week 0 Day 2

Another very low appetite day.  I did eat my usual lunch, then overnight oats for a snack much later than usual.  It was an extremely busy night so I had to fit dinner in wherever I could.  I did not make the same mistake today with a 2nd taco.  After work I went to the healthy living meeting.  Then I rushed home, at a taco standing at the stove like a bachelor, then ran Peach to dance class.  I stopped at the store for a few things that I had forgotten then back home.  I had about 20 minutes before I had to leave to pick up the exchange student from color guard practice.  I tried using that time to feed and walk the dog (Have I mentioned yet that I have another foster-soon-to-be-adopted dog?) but the dog is crazy and was jumping all over me when I was trying to get shoes on to take her for a walk.  By the time we got outside, I had 10 minutes.  I figured I could get around the block (It's a very large block) but she was very stubborn and very interested in lots of things on the way.  I barely made it up the street and we had to turn around and head home so I could get to the school on time.  After running to get the exchange student, we rushed home so I could squeeze my workout into the next pocket of time before needing to pick Peach up at dance.  I was home by about 8:30 and dance ended at 9:30.  I managed level 2 of Athena's playbook - day 2: upper body.  Then I left, all sweaty, to pick up Peach, got home, showered, and finally sat down to relax near 10.  Qbert also had some astronomy homework so we sat outside to try and find Taurus.   My food was well under target, so well that I was just barely avoiding being yelled at by MFP so I went ahead and had more cake.

Despite being tired all day yesterday, I did not manage to get to bed at a decent time and I stayed up too late. . . then had trouble sleeping since this cold will not leave.  Public Service Announcement - no matter the circumstances, do not take NyQuil at 2am if you have to get up for work the next day.  It will not end well.

Food - 80% clean and under target: +3 pts

3 point streak: 2 days

Fitness - Day 2 complete, 7000 steps: +3 pts

3 point streak: 2 days

Total Points: 12

What kind of dog?

She's a 5 month old boxer/fox hound puppy.  We pretty much fell in love with her right away so we're going to adopt her ourselves.  But it's been a long time since I've had a puppy and I've never had one of this size.  She's absolutely adorable but she needs lots of training.  She's definitely a handful but any puppy of this size would be.

I have a 6 month old Wiemaraner puppy. First one of the breed I have ever had (grew up with goldens and cocker spaniels). Had his since 8wo. Hes a handful but so incredibly smart.

Do you crate train? That has been a godsend with him (wiems are prone to seperation anxiety). That and doggy day care.

Definitely learned a lot since I am on my own taking care of him.

She is crate trained and thank goodness.  My house would be destroyed if she were left to her own devices.  She is adorable and smart.  Her issue is just that she is already 5 months old and I don't think wherever she was she got any training.  Now we have a lot of ground to cover and I'm learning as I go too.

I've found the "live with your dog" approach to be the best. Set parameters and rules, and strictly enforce them (stuff like on the furniture or off, jumping, etc). The other stuff like sit is really just fluff. With him I say something once, like come. If he doesn't I make him do it. Never repeat myself. I also don't talk to him unnecessarily. Instead I try to convey my thoughts through body language and eye contact. Its been an eye opening experience to be sure.

That's interesting.  Most of the stuff I have researched says to repeat it.  I think a lot of it has to do with her being part hound.  They evidently don't react to traditional training methods in the same way.  I am not sure how much of that I believe.

Our biggest problems now are biting or mouthing and jumping up on people. Now that she knows us, and me in particular, she gets really excited when I come home.  The puppy tackling you when you get home is cute and all but she likes to nip and mouth on you at the same time and doesn't stop when you tell her too.  She's also teething still so biting is an issue.  Every thing I've found in my research says to teach them to bite softer before teaching them not to bite.  This avoids accidental bites in the future from being severe.

DISCLAIMER - I've never had a hound, and am not a professional dog trainer lol

I dealt with biting. I tried everything under the sun. Wiemaraners are a hunting breed, they've been bred to use their mouths. I have a couple of humble suggestions.

-If you can bear it don't move when they bite, and your response should meet the severity of the bite. Pulling or moving entices them to play. Hold your hand still. Make it uninteresting. You can try "crying" or "yipping" like a wounded dog when it gets to be to much. Even going as far to sulk. This kind of worked for me, but he would generally start biting saying "hey play with me!"

-Stopping play when they bite shows them that all fun stops when they bite. But again you have to be able to put up with biting.

-you can try subbing out a toy or something appropriate when they bite. I do not like this. Unless you can get the toy in their mouth before you end up there is alright.

To be honest the things that worked for me are doggy day care, and a can with 10 pennies in it.

As my trainer put it he's biting you because he has no one else to bite and play with. I don't know if in your case you have any other dogs, but that would be step one. Get him around other dogs and supervise play. I would suggest looking up the Vermont Dog Trainer with Ian Grant. You can even message him privately on FB and get his advice for free! He helped me a ton. The change in Ryker when he gets the chance to play with other dogs is remarkable. Also when he gets all his energy out. Exercise is a must. The more tired he is the more well behaved. If you have a reputable doggy day care near you I would suggest taking them at least once a week. It can be costly (costs me $25 bucks a day) but I do it three times a week because he loves it. Day care does come with a fair share of risks, one being illnesses like kennel cough. But those are pretty rare and I personally believe the benefits far outway the possible negatives.

The can works wonders, if you don't mind an approach like it. When he starts to bite hard say whatever you do (no, stop, etc). I say "HEY". Its a natural thing for me to say. Then shake the crap out of the can. It will shock/scare the dog, and you have to resist the urge to comfort them... so its not for everyone.

I had to go the extreme route because his teeth where sharp and he was drawing blood on me.

You can also try out restraint techniques. This also works wonders. The monks of new skete talk about it in their book, and there is a bunch of stuff online. The trick is to never do it malicously. Your not throwing the dog around, but once you start you CANNOT let them go until you choose to.

For general teething purposes bully sticks are a godsend! Also finding some things like nyla bones or antlers that they like helps a ton.

As you say avoiding the severity of a bite is something to always take into account. So restraint can go a long way to help that. Getting her to know that sometimes shes just going to have to put up with human contact is good. Pull on her ears, tails, paws, and skin.

The excited thing is its whole issue. If shes extremely excited to see you when you get home ignore her. Only let her out of the crate or interact when she calms down. I tell everyone who interacts with Ryker when hes in the crate to ignore him. And to only let him out when hes calm. And to only acknowledge him long after hes out of it. Ian Grant talks a lot about this. Hes a really great resource I couldn't recommend enough.

I am working on jumping right now. There are tons of varying thoughts on this. Some think its a dominance thing, others think its simply how they meet. Whatever it is you have to get out ahead of it. I never let Ryker meet a person or dog. They have to come meet him. So no running up and greeting people. Also I tell people if he jumps up to step into it or push him down and not acknowledge him. But its tough. Everyone acts differently and its something I am working on now. Again once you get a word like No and HEY to stick. It tells them Uh oh this isn't something I should do.

I am a huge advocate for the one and done with commands. Because that is what they are. When you say sit, or come the dog should do that instantly. Like I said I make a point of limiting verbal communication with Ryker. Because when I speak to him, he needs to learn to listen. Because quite literally it could mean his life or death one day. Thats why I don't worry about things like sit too much. Sitting isn't going to save his life. But a stay or come when hes going to run into traffic definitely will. If you have to say sit 5 times, then they finally begrudgingly sit, and then you praise them what are you really teaching them? That its ok to ignore you 4 times and then on the 5th time do it but not whole heartedly. Thats just my opinoin and the route I like. Im no pro dog trainer.

Ive read over a dozen dog training books, and have picked things up that I like from each of them. A slip lead can also work wonders too.

As far as hounds be harder to train, I think its along the same lines as my Wiemaraner. These animals where bred to hunt. They want to do that job. So take it away and they are lost and frustrated and they may not even know why! Almost all of my favorite training books talk about giving your dog a job. I signed up Ryker for nose training, and always encourage him to sniff things out with his nose.

So I wouldn't say they are harder to train, just in certain aspects they might be. Especially if it fights against their natural instincts. I suggest finding out what they excel at and channel that into a beneficial pursuit. I hide pieces of grilled chicken in the yard for him to find. I love seeing him explore with his nose!

TL:DR

Make sure the dog is getting enough exercise, walking, fetching, or playing with other dogs. Tired dogs are well behaved dogs.

Pick a solution for biting and stick with it. Always be constant every time no matter how inconvenient it is with you. Ensure the response to the bite equals its intensity.

For jumping do the same. Ensure others know about it and if they are not comfortable doing it then your dog shouldn't meet them right now.

Do your research on the idea of only saying the command once and make an informed decision. Dog training is not a cookie cutter thing. A bunch of different things work!

Don't be afraid to seek out a professional! I suggest Ian Grant. Mondays he does a livestream and answers questions, and is always willing to answer questions over FB messenger and even direct you to trainers in your area.

Dogs will do anything for a piece of boiled chicken, bonus points if its a big frozen strip!

Oh and PS. Avoid Zak George on youtube. And all purely positive stuff. This will work great for mid to low level activity dogs of good temperament. But the idea of not telling your dog no is, in my opinion, asinine.

Wow your chain bonus system is so cool! Definitely following along this time :)

Also, I feel you on the Nyquil... except for me it's Benedryl.  That stuff knocks me out like no other and I woke up having an allergy attack the other night and just slammed a few of those half asleep.  Slept riiiiggghhhhtttt through my alarm hahah.

Yup, that's exactly what I did.  I woke up half an hour after I was supposed to be at work and had literally no clue what was going on.  Then I was in a fog at least half the day.

dealt with biting.

This is our current tactic but the yelping/crying thing only stops her about 40% of the time.  When that works I reqard her for stopping and then try to redirect.  But the rest of the time she bites more.  We usually resort to the 'time-out/ method of walking away from that gets so tiresome.  Teaching ner 'No' doesn't seem to result in anything better and from what I've learned about hounds, is really a reward because all they want is attention and bad attention is still attention.  I have never heard about using a can of pennies.  I might give it a try.

I've been meaning to check out some better toys heared towards teething.  I've got a kong toy with treats in it but she isn't interested.  We did have some knawing bone like things.  That keeps her occupied for about an hour while she goes through the whole thing but I don't want something she has to ingest to be our go to thing.  It should be more of a treat, partly because I never know what is actually not harmful.

I had just researched this the night before and found the same thing.  This makes sense but not feasible when I am in a hurry.  But I've tried it once so far and it only took about 4 times in and our the door for her to lose a little interest.

How do you control that?   I can see how on a leash but in a dog park situation this seems to be the norm.

From what I gather, in addition to the hunting tendencies, it's also the need for attention.  Negative attention is still attention so negative conditioning evidently discourages the desired behavior.  But don't all dogs just want attention?

We have been going to the dog park to get all that energy out.  Most days I make sure she at least gets a walk but when I have the time, she is much better after an hour at the dog park.  However, she needs to learn to come when called quickly so that I can get her out of any situations that arise there.  She gets excited and not all the dogs want to play like she does so she can be a bit of a bully.   Thanks for all your tips.  They are helpful as are those recommendations for trainers.  I was going to go the obedience class route but they are 1) pricy and 2) the next class near me isn't for a month.  I can't wait that long and if I have the information and the patience I should be able to do it myself.

Week 0 Day 3

Wow.  I got really behind on posting...  Low appetite continued into Wednesday.  I had my usual for lunch and then barely ate the rest of the day.  It was suposed to be an easy relaxing evening but Dottie, the Puppy, was ridiculous with energy.  It stressed me out a bit and I ended up taking her to the dog park for about an hour.  That made a huge difference but ate up much of my evening.  I did make an effort to get some steps in at the dog park.  I got day three of Athena's Playbook done, lower body day.  I never got hungry for dinner but close to bedtime I was a bit peckish so I had a bagel and some cheese.  I didn't eat enough to avoid being yelled at by MFP.

Week 0 Day 4

Thursday was a really rough day.  I woke up to an emotional rollercoaster.  It got handled but by lunch I was starving and I was not in the mood for the usual.  The cafeteria had pizzas and I was fully aware that I was craving something to eat me feelings.  But given I have been under eating for a few days it didn't seem like I could do any harm so I went ahead.  Dinner was taco salad and that ended up being it for the day so I was still way under target, but at least enough to satisfy MFP.  Thursday was an actual relaxing evening.  I spent some time sitting outside in the sun, doing nothing.  Athena's Playbook day 4 done, abs, and took Dottie for a walk.

Week 0 Day 5

My appetite finally kicked in on Friday.  I hit the cafeteria again and planned on having a tortilla pizza for dinner.  The evening ended up being busy.  I picked up groceries and then had to pick up Peach from the mall and take her to DBEs.  Exchange Student is in color guard and had to go to the football game.  I felt a bit obligated to go to take pictures and support her.  I grabbed a bagel and some cheese for dinner on the run.  I got home late and still needed to get a workout in.  I really didn't want to do one.  I switched Athena's Playbook days a bit and did Saturday's yoga workout instead.  I finished the day with a chocolate frozen yogurt bar and stayed under target again.
