jstanlick does more MetCons

jstanlick

Recommended Posts

I'm gonna put this here quick and flesh out everything over the course of this week.

Training: MetCons. CrossFit type workouts as they seem to do a great job lowering my blood glucose numbers. I'm still gonna run, but not concentrate on it or a different goal.

Nutrition: I'm going to play around with carb cycling. On days with heavy workouts, I'm going to allow myself some more carbs, mostly fruit.

Organization: Lay out my Cub Scouts calendar for the year. As the Pack's communication chair, I need to remind everyone else when stuff is happening. So, I need to be more organized than them.

More details later...I've got a Cubs/Brewers game to get back to :D

Sorry there hasn't been much to follow at this point, but I'm glad your all here. Busy, busy, busy. But, honestly, that's a terrible excuse. I mean, who isn't busy, right?

So, it's Day 1, Week 1 and maybe I need to flesh out something tangible for these goals. I kinda feel like I'm throwing darts at a board with some of these, so bare (sp?) with me.

Training: MetCons. At least 4x/week. The nice thing about MetCons is they really should be 30 minutes or less. For instance, last night was a 5 rounds for time of 5 pullups, 10 pushups and 15 dumbbell thrusters (25 lb db's) with a cash out circuit of  3 rounds of Russian twists, planks and mountain climbers. I was done with the whole thing in 20 minutes and breathing heavy and sweating and feeling a little bit of soreness in the muscles today. So, 4x/week shouldn't be some impossible task.

Nutrition: This one really is a shot at the dart board until I figure out what the right levels are. So, on heavy workout days I'm going to allow myself 25 grams more of carbs than a lighter workout day and on rest days 25 grams less. So, that's 125g/100g/75g. I have no idea if those are good numbers for this or not, but that's what I'm going to start with and see what happens. N=1 experiment number 48 (I have no idea if it's 48 as I never stopped to count, but let's go with it :D ), here we come.

Organization: Ugh. First Cub Scout meeting was tonight and it was a disaster. I didn't organize or plan for enough stuff and the boys got out of hand. The worst part was the head instigator was my own son. I was so mad at him that I chewed his ass out the whole ride home. I mean come on, 3 warnings was probably 2 warnings too many, and its not like these are new expectations for him or anything. But, I digress. I obviously need to plan better to prevent this from happening in the first place by keeping them busy. So, I will get my Den's planning under control and then move on to the Pack's. By the end of this challenge we will have everything scheduled and the next few monthly meeting agenda's all set and planned.

So, how'd today go? Nutritionally speaking I was at 90 g of carbs on a day with no workouts, and I already described the Cub Scout meeting. Also, I'm on call this week started 8 AM today and I walked into the office into a shit storm of failed storage devices. 3 different disc storage devices and manufacturers and only 1 was running properly. Fortunately, it was the expensive one that we run the mission critical stuff off of, but the other two we unavailable. Stress levels went sky high. So, we're off to a great start. :(

Well, it's not all bad. I had a followup with the endocrinologist today who ordered some labs for tomorrow and said unless she sees something unusual in those labs I don't need to come back to see her. In her words, "I'd just be taking your money. You're a perfect patient. There's nothing for me to do except tell you to do what you're doing. You keep up the diet and exercise, and you'll never have to see me again. If issues arise, by all means schedule an appointment and come see me, but -- and I mean this in the nicest possible way, -- I hope you have a great life."

So, I guess that's a pretty good day even if nothing else went according to plan all day. Sometimes plans need to be broken I guess.

What a week. Just glad its over. Well, almost. This weekend isn't looking great either. So far, I've managed only 2 metcons this week and no running. Tomorrow and Sunday I've got lots of volunteer service work scheduled with my boys. So, we'll see how I can fit in some more workouts this weekend. What I could really use is a long run to clear my head, I'm just not sure when that could happen with this schedule. But, now the good news.

The MetCon I did get in included a total of 70 squat cleans which allowed me to work on the mini challenge. Now, the hand stand pushups that were part of it were probably pretty sloppy, but it's hard to look in the mirror while doing those and correct issues. Mostly, I'm just happy I completed 15 of them.

Still trying to get the nutrition right with the carb cycling, but for the most part the blood glucose numbers are in the right ball park.

Now, the best news that has me feeling melancholy. My labs came back from the doctor with my cholesterol numbers better than they have ever been in my entire life. The A1C numbers continue to improve. They are down to 5.8%. Good news, right? I went from 11.8% to 6% in 4 months. I went from 6% to 5.8% the net 4 months. Had I hit 5.6%, I would be free of a diabetes diagnosis. So, I feel happy and bummed by my blood work all at the same time. So close.

Well, I guess I gotta do a little more grinding.

Would 5.8 vs. 5.6 make any difference in how you live your day-to-day life? I think it sounds like you are doing fantastically! I understand a goal is a goal, but I'm still much more happy than sad for you.

Does it make a difference? No. Not really. And I should feel really good about it. It’s not like a feel bad about it either. I busted my ass to get it to where it is. I just don’t feel as good as I should, which makes feel guilty for being greedy. There’s just something about getting it under 5.7 after that doctors didn’t think it was doable without drugs.

So, here’s the weekend update. I did not get it my 2 remaining mercies for the week.

Saturday- We spent 5 hours in the morning working to clean up a cemetery that has fallen into disrepair. It’s a very sad situation. I mean, grave markers for people that died before the Civil War that hard fallen over and grass had grown over them. The were inches deep in the soil. One of them was from 1812. Wisconsin was the untamed wilderness then. So, lots of digging, lifting, hauling, dumping, repeat. It’s going to take a few more similar weekends to get that place back into shape. Just kinda feels like the right thing to do though. And then I had my own yard to clean up and mow. My whole body was tired so I skipped any more workouts. Then we had to get my daughter to her high school homecoming dance. Man she just keeps growing up!

Today, I managed a 5K followed by the WOD from Thursday that I missed. 7 minute AMRAP of bar facing burpees. I made it to 70 reps which I think is pretty good since I did it right after completing one of my fastest 5K runs of the year. So, I didn’t feel bad having some chips and a brownie at my companies open house tailgate party for the Packers game. The Packers didn’t keep up their end of the bargain, but the boys always like going to my office and playing the video arcade games in our cafeteria. Oldest son likes the classic machine that plays both Donkey Kong and Defender. Well, it plays other games too, but those are his favorite ones. Youngest son likes Cruisin’ USA. Despite the chips, brownie and an IPA to wash it all down, the glucose numbers were at 88. So, the carb cycling and the MetCons seem to be doing the trick.

The cemetery work started out as helping some other friends that wanted to do this. Once we got started, I felt really bad for the people buried there and their families. They trusted that their loved ones' remains would be watched over and that didn't happen.

What's funny is I thought I'd get more done. After 2 minutes I had finished 25 burpees. Over the next 5 minutes I managed 45. Definitely slowed down the longer it went. All of these workouts look so simple on paper and they kick my ass. I mean, it was only 7 minutes. Granted it was after a 5K, but still. But, I do feel like I accomplished something after finishing these kind of workouts.

I thought this week would be less busy. I was wrong. Ugh.

Updates? Sure.

Training: MetCons. So far, just one this week and it was today. Although the weather was perfect for a run (high of 61 degrees, light breeze and sunny), but I've got a 5 mile run planned tomorrow and didn't want to overdo it from a running standpoint. So, I stuck with today's scheduled MetCon, which is a victory for me because a month ago I would've just gone running. Anyway, here's today's:

  • Circuit 1: 5 rounds for time of 50 single unders followed by 50 ft single overhead arm lunge walks with 35 pound dumbbell. (Finished in 7:32)
  • Circuit 2: 7 minute AMRAP of 7 Russian Twists w/ 10 KG med ball, 7 Walk the Planks, 7 Knees to Chest and 7 mountain climbers (each side). Finished 5 rounds and a 6th thru the Walk the Planks
  • 3 sets of 20 reps of KBS with 24 kg KB.

Nutrition: This has been going well except when I plan to workout and work and family life interfere (like yesterday) and I'm over on a carb amount for what essentially becomes a rest day. But, I like the fact that I can include some carbs back in without upsetting my numbers when things go according to plan.

Organization: Lay out my Cub Scouts calendar for the year. So, I don't have the communications scheduled for the rest of the year, but I did manage to get my mailing lists up to date which is loads of fun when folks change their email and forget to tell you, or parents get divorced, don't tell you and then get pissed off when you don't send both parents an email. Sigh. Well, at least it's up to date now and I won't be missing anyone or sending stuff to people who no longer want it...until someone else fills me in on something they forgot to tell me.
