Creating Stillness in a Storm

This challenge will focus on the simple tasks of daily life and hopefully finding peace in it.  I am travelling to Europe next week to travel and visit my in-laws (and meet my mother-in-law, face to face, for the first time) so any elaborate goals would fall apart anyways.  Focusing on simple sanity-saving goals seems like the way to go.

Istanbul - stop#1

1. Heal

Do the full set of prescribed physio exercises 2 out of 3 days.  I have a tendency to skip the sillier-looking ones when I do them in a public place.

2. Protect

Teeth will be thoroughly cleaned (flossing/electric toothbrush) at least once a day.  They got their cleaning last week and I would like them to stay dentist-clean as long as possible.

3. Prevent

a) Write down 3 things before bed every night that I am grateful for.

b) Aim for as many days as possible without pointless negative comments.  Work is a bad place for this, with light-hearted bitching being part of the normal conversation.  I have been trying this all week and so far only managed two days; it's harder than I thought!  Examples from this week:

"I can't believe the computers are down again. I thought they were supposed to make our lives easier, not harder"

"Ugh, Mondays"

"Why is it always 2am when your brain decides you must solve all known problems of the universe RIGHT NOW?" - I still want to know why! :D

Mentioning problems is fine as long as it is for the purpose of solving them.

My stress levels have been building over the year as I have started to think more about being competitive at OCRs.  The reality is, I will never be great.  I can be better than I am today though, so once I get some detachment from how I compare to other OCR athletes I will be in a better place to start setting goals around fitness again.  Maybe by time my knee is healed in November/December. :)

I love the title of your challenge. Also love all your goals. Except maybe the one about pointless negative comments- yikes, have you been listening to me? That is something I need to work on.

As long as you aren't her, you're still doing okay! I am hoping to make 75% on this goal, but it will likely be closer to 30%... it really is a normal way of bonding between friends and coworkers.

:glee: That is what struck me about the conversation. How much we say those things just as sort of small talk. But it really does add up to a bunch of negativity.

Oh right. That means I really can't try and convince you to run random races while you are in London ;)

I love the no-negativity goal.

Everything is great, thanks! I actually had so much fun on vacation I kind of (completely) forgot about the challenge... oops.  My mother-in-law was very nice and not at all as scary as I thought.  I think it is only her children who are scared of her!

Istanbul was chaotic and fun, but everyone there smokes and I ended up with a sinus infection from it.  London was awesome and expensive!  I bought some beautiful silk from a fabric store that supplies the Royal Family and will have it made into a shirt.  Vienna was beautiful and peaceful.  The opera (Onegan) was quite the experience too.

So back to reality and work and rehab now. :D

I couldn't resist; I signed up for one more OCR this month.  The event is an untimed fun-run with optional obstacles so I can walk it if I need to, and look at the medal!

They sure do. :D   I had wanted to go to a wood inlay class this day actually, but it was full.  I came across this run while looking for something else to do instead.

You do woodworking? My husband does. He has made a couple of wood inlay projects. He shows me some gorgeous ones in his woodworking magazines. Hopefully they will offer the class again. I think an 80's OCR is the best choice

This was going to be my first class.  Woodworking is something that has always interested me but I don't have space (indoor or out) to have large tools, so inlay might be something I could do on my kitchen table.  I was planning on making really horrible Christmas presents this year with it. :D  Your husband's projects would be miles beyond what I can accomplish for now, but it sounds like a fun hobby. You've never tried?

My mother wants to go on a UK (Scotland/Ireland/Britain/Wales) trip next year, so I might take her.  We would have to plan around OCR goodness.

Challenge Update

I am back on track for my challenge goals once again.  As fun as vacations are, it is great to be home and back to routine.  Sadly I came back to full-blown winter ( a foot of snow, and it has snowed more every day).  So, SAD protocols have been put into action.  We will beat it this year!

Yesterday was my first running rehab day: 3x (5 min walk/1 min run).  Today my knee is all angry and cranky again... so I have to wait another week before trying again.  I am getting worried this thing is never going to heal! And I am out of coverage for physiotherapy so any more sessions this year will be out-of-pocket.  I suppose if it doesn't let me run at all, I can stick with the stationary bike for the next two months and restart physio in January.

How did it get to the end of the challenge already?

Yesterday I decided to start strength-focused training.  The original plan was to just focus on running rehab for now, but since that is being uncooperative I feel the need to progress on something.  Together with my rehab exercises it makes for long days though; yesterday morning about 2 hours in the gym.  I'm going with full-body so I'm only in the gym every other day.

My lost phone has been given up for dead, and I ordered the Samsung Galaxy 9 to replace it.  Being without a phone is hard!  I use it for the Kindle app more than anything and I miss my books.  Racing Weight especially; I am trying to follow their eating guide without the ability to refer to it.

Might be a good plan to start up strength again.  It sounds like it takes time, but the exercise might help the SAD, sine winter seems to have settled in early

Exercise is the cornerstone of my fight against SAD.  It's amazing, even if I am so exhausted I fall asleep on the floor twice before making it to the front door (literally happens), twenty minutes of jogging will keep me awake and functioning for 2-3 hours.
