Assault on the Gloom Monster!

Our adventurer has fared well on her most recent quest and has returned to town full of confidence, inspiration and loot!   But the journey doesn't end here...   The darkness continues its slow approach on the land, and it will take the most dedicated of heroes to fight it off.    

 

Autumn into winter is my most difficult time of year because the shortening days, the degrading weather and grey skies all weigh on me heavily.   While I've never been clinically diagnosed with S.A.D. I would be surprised if they said I didn't suffer from it.     Autumn and winter is brutal for me, yo.    I cannot let the Gloom Monster derail me every year, so we are doubling the efforts to avoid the trap that will turn me into one of the Gloomfallen.

 

RULE #1 - Consistency, not Perfection will damage the Gloom Monster!

I've spent the last 4-6 weeks getting into a very good routine with working out.    I work out so that I am strong and physically fit enough to move through life in a way that allows me to enjoy a lot of things.  I also know it is great for aiding the mood and guarding the emotions against attacks from the Gloom.   

 

Exercise at least 5x a week.

Continue strength training 2-3x, fill in other days with any kind of non-laziness.   

**Adjusting this goal a bit so as to not be so legalistic.    Rather than say I must run, or cardio on those off days, I am just saying 'Don't fall to the Lazy Glooms'.    Basically, anything 20m or more that has me up and about, can count for this.   I know I will choose to do things like run, or dance, or hockey, so I am not going to make it a rule that it HAS to be that.

 

RULE #2 - To keep the soul healthy, the body must be nourished.

I'm on a good streak with tracking my calories, and it is currently not causing me any rage, stress or tantrums.    Part of the success of this is that I allow and plan for 'fun meals' that I still do my best to track, but without any obsession.   I just switch them from the normal routine, to the special routine.   I've seen a lot of progress the past few weeks so I need to keep the consistency going here as well.

 

Track Food in MFP 7x / week.

Plan for 1 Fun meal / week.

Homecooked Friends at least 2x / week

I'm able to delete the old iced coffee habit for a few reasons!  No longer addicted is the best one, but also I've prioritized the cost of them didn't equal the enjoyment of them, and also ... cold.  It's cold out now, hot coffee please.    Game night snacks have also gotten under control, so I am pulling that goal off from last time and just tucking the snacks side quest under the tracking food one.

 

RULE #3 - A sharp mind keeps a sharp sword.

I was cleaning my bookcase the other day and found a bunch of old sketchbooks.  They date back to 2015 as to when I started this new hobby.   I remember saying, "I want to work on something, that I am not immediately and effortlessly good at, and KEEP AT IT."   I think 3 years of consistent art certainly counts as tackling that.    I still really enjoy it, and so, even though the Gloom Monster has been nagging doubt in my mind, I will continue to keep this hobby going!

 

Sketch daily, but don't be crazy about it.   7x / week

Tablet art practice, 3-4x / week

Art Lesson, 1x / week

My upcoming schedule has me busy on Tuesdays for most of this challenge, and that is typically one of my tablet art nights.   Rather than get crazy trying to find a way to add another thing in without removing an existing thing, I am just making the tablet goal more flexible.   During last challenge, I had a night where I spent about 4 hours on the tablet.   That's equivalent to 4, 1 hour nights, so the amount of days is less important, than the amount of time / quality of time I put in on that particular part.  I am leaving it as at least 3 days though, because I have in the past slacked on that without the goal - and it is a skill that can get rusty fast.  (Using your hand to draw on the desk, while your eyes follow a screen DOES have a learning curve I don't want to go through again!)

 

RULE #4 - One must face the mirror, to ward off the lies.

Tagging along on a thing that my favorite @Redstone will be doing this go around, and that's to take the selfies.    I say this out of a place of honesty and confession, not out of one seeking praise or attention.    I am one of the many that suffer from the idea that my appearance falls short on the scale of 'acceptable'.    I know this is not true.   At least, the heart does ... maybe the brain?  Well, only ONE part of the formula knows it is true, and I need to start loving myself better so that all parts of the formula agree.    I did a challenge some time ago where I took a picture of myself (and left it unflattering) and then made a positive comment about it to the world.   That is back on the agenda.

Take one, at will selfie per week, and praise the reflection you see in the mirror.

 

Side Goals for the journey:

  1. Find and set up a money tracking app for the phone, that allows me to track planned expenses in a budget, but also keep tally of the whim buys.  (Suggestions?)
  2. Get outside, even when it gets cold and bleh.  "Man's heart away from nature becomes hard." ~ Standing Bear  (Read this at a N.P. once and loved it.)
  3. Put more money into savings account.
  4. Don't back out of hockey games.

Ohhh hmm yes!  I think a short rest, because I am not totally resetting all my abilities, I am still planning to do stuff!  Just be less track every last minute.

Zero week, random whatever day check in.

 

After feeling MEGA under the weather yesterday, I opted to take it completely easy and do nothing other than sketch, Inktober and tablet time.     My bro in law made an amazing comfort food dinner of baked chicken thighs, with super lightly breaded, broiled to a crisp skin, mashed taters and veggies.   I normally don't like dark meat, or chicken on a bone and I only eat skin if its buffalo wings.   I GNAWED THE DANG BONE!  It was so delicious.

 

Felt 100% better this morning and so at lunch I went back to the warehouse and worked out lightly.   I wanted to take it easy on the knee I hurt taking a shoe off, and my left calf is all knotted up and crunchy, so I went light and chill.   Inverted Ring Rows, Push Ups, Turkish Get Ups, Jumping Jacks,  Light weight Step Ups and some light Deadlifts.    I actually felt really good throughout the workout, and I didn't push myself so hard that it left me feeling wiped, or that I might have taken a step back on the virus recovery.

 

Work is super busy, but I have some awesome fantasy realm ambience music on, the sun is out and the sky is a brilliant shade of blue.    Going to get caught up, then sketch, then ink, and tonight I am eating Chipotle with friends.   No worries, no fuss.   Probably get a taco or two and call it a win.    Then?  Then it's Day 1 of marathoning Season 3 of Seven Deadly Sins!

Back to feeling a little off/moody today.   My work wife is having the same complaints so we think we're fighting off a bug and mostly staying ahead of it, but just feeling the strain of the battle.    Sketched at lunch, so when I got home I decided to try some dancing - it went well enough and it did help my MOOD, but my body was feeling so tired.   Finished up the wacky drow sorcerer I started the other night and added the shading and textures.   I wanted to see if I could aim more western cartoon-anime style.  Eh... maybe eventually.

Things are going fine, even with it being zero week and me not obsessing!   Hmm, might it be that I formed some habits?  Cooould be!    Now for some video games, though I don't know if I want Pillars of Eternity or Northgard.

Start small!   Success is a great motivator and even getting little things under your belt offers both a great foundation and a lot of inspiration to keep at it!   Likewise, over-doing things can be a surefire way to fall flat and get discouraged.   The guidelines they set up for first challenges are super informed with those ideals in mind so trust them.    And also?   Plan for exceptions in your challenge/ goals/ etc - because life is ALWAYS going to throw stuff at you.   And mentally, knowing that you had that planned in there, is so huge!

Worked out at lunch and man am I glad I did, because it totally hyped me up and turned my mood around.

Tacos tonight!    Super looking forward to that.   And I might have a beer at gaming- but no longer feel like I NEED to.
