Oh this sounds very interesting.

Mani, Thoko (two great women who has helped me tremendously over the years - and they would be honoured to have their names in a story), Blessing, "Light up when I saw you" (English meaning of a Zulu name), Elize, Sarah, Margaret... Any name that fits with the character description. Google baby names and meanings.

These are great. I may take some for some of the other characters. Mwahahaha.

It looks like I forgot to update yesterday because of all the NaNo excitement.

Halloween was a fun day. I wore all black and a tiny witch hat to work. We didn't have an overwhelming work load, so I was able to get some work on my research project done, which was great. I also got to have fun with the other people that decided to dress up for the day. In the afternoon, we had some meetings and ended with a journal club where we evaluated a new article. When I came home, I basically spent a bunch of time writing and then watching the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. I went to bed fairly early with visions of NaNo dancing in my head.

Thursday was the start of NaNo. I woke up around 4am out of excitement and got straight to writing. I made a very significant dent in my daily word count before heading in to work. The day was quiet again but at least there was one new consult to think about. In the down time, I worked on my novel. When I got home, I worked on my novel. I also took some time to play around on the various NaNo websites. There's a discord channel for NaNo writers in the Twin Cities for example. I also watched some more Sabrina. Then at 8pm was the last ever group call for my bootcamp group. It was pretty emotional, but brought some closure. I stayed up a bit on the internet after that but got to bed at a reasonable hour.

Friday I slept in a bit but still got at least 1000 words written before it was time to go in to work. We had a rather slow day again, so I picked at my story in between as well as chatting with a few friends on gchat. At least there was another new patient for me to work on. I wonder if next week will continue at this pace or if we will get some more business. When I got home, I jumped right back in to a mix of journaling and noveling. I took breaks to check social media and chat with friends, but I managed to write even more words than I did on Thursday. I'm keeping up with the Reverse NaNo schedule so far, so we'll see if I end up doing that. All the creatures from Oge Mai are definitely helping to inspire me to write a bit more than I would otherwise, not to mention the joy of word sprints. So far, I'm taking to NaNo like a duck takes to water.

Oh man you guys. Saturday was full of so much NaNo. It was Double Up Donation Day where the challenge is double your word count and/or donate to keep the non0profit going with businesses matching donations at certain points of the day. They had a bunch of activities going because of this. I took full part. I woke up early as per usual and got about 1000 words down before anything started (the NaNoWriMo offices are on the west coast). Then there were word sprints (writing as much as possible in a time period), virtual write ins (a few staff from NaNo chatting on youtube and leading some sprints with prompts), and various other excitement to participate in. Not to mention 4 the words is decked out in tons of new monsters with shiny prizes for certain word goals. I'm working to collect what I need for those and fill up my bestiary (sort of like a pokedex). Ther was tons to keep me busy. In the afternoon, one of my friends that is studying for her ID boards joined me by doing questions while I was sprinting, so we were able to hold each other accountable and cheer each other on. Also another one of my good friends from college was online (a rare event), so we chatted quite a bit and caught each other up on life. At the end of the day, I had written over 4700 new words for my story and 10K words in general (counts journaling on the site). A productive and lovely way to spend a Saturday!

My story IS going well, @lucky fire dragon. I'm well into the middle of it now, so it's feeling a little bit like a grind, but it helps with all the loot and swag on 4 the words. Are you going to come play? It's a lot of fun.

Monday I got some words in before heading off to work, but it was a bit more of a slog than some of the other days have been. Work was still a reasonable pace even though we got a few new consults, so I was able to get some work done on my novel there too. When I got home, I made dinner and finished up a battle with a very involved monster. Then I watched V for Vendetta as is my annual tradition. I was glad that I was able to watch without worrying about my word count because I had already met my goals for the day.

Tuesday was another similar day. Truthfully, the days are starting to blend together, and I'm getting very ready to head back to Minnesota to my true duties. I woke up around 5:20 and got up to write and wash my hair and do the other morning tasks. Each morning I am getting about 1000 words of story down on the paper, so that's a pretty good habit to maintain as we go along. Work was pretty boring although we got some new consults in the afternoon that made it easier to not go completely insane with boredom. When I got home, I did some more writing and ate the same dinner that I've been having (chicken, rice, and broccoli) in order to eat up the stores of food that I have here. I did watch the last episode of the current season of the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina too. I'm interested to see how they move things along in the next season whenever that comes along.

Wednesdays are the busiest days in my current schedule because we have a bunch of meetings in the afternoon. The morning started off very typically with my writing spree and breakfast. We had one new patient that our resident was very excited about, so I let him get to work on it. The fellows were off at a conference for lunch time, so I ate by myself and then was able to get quite a few online and real life errands accomplished. I was proud of that little streak of productivity. Then there was some time to get more writing done, so I took that and made quite a bit of progress with a silly side plot in my story. Finally we went to our meetings and were able to finish up the day right around 5pm. Once I got home, I was quite tired but made dinner, wrote a bit more, and went to bed early.

Thursday was pretty similar to a lot of other days other than a few minor annoyances. There was a parking citation on my car that I'm going to have to deal with somehow even though it's completely the fault of the hospital that I've been parking in the visitor ramp still. Also, the resident that we've been working with has been old boys' club excluding me from discussions with the attending, so I'm glad that he won't be here on Friday. I'm sick of all the sexist baloney in medicine, but it seems that it's not going away any time soon. I'm exaggerating a little bit, but not that much. I suppose that's the very definition of microaggressions anyway. Still, work went smoothly and I had plenty of time to write and chat with friends, so all's well. I'm starting to try to pack up the apartment because I head back to Minnesota on Saturday. It's a ten plus hour drive, so I want to get on the road as early as I can.

I'm sorry you have to deal with this. I'm hoping it will change soon because as a teacher I can tell you that statistically more women are graduating high school than men, more women are attending post-secondary and post-graduate programs than men, and this is true in almost every major field of study, including the big ones like medical and law. The American Association of Medical Colleges did a study in 2017 that women represented 50.7% of new enrollees in medical schools across the country in 2017. This is the first time women enrollees have outnumbered men.

Plus, as a man I get irritated with the "old boys club" because it's stupid, especially in a field in which you have to work WITH other people. If you're really great at your job and you consider yourself valuable within your field, why would you not want to share that with as many people as possible? And if you have the opportunity to work alongside someone else who is really great at their job and may be stronger than you in some areas, why would you no want to work with them and learn from them? It just doesn't make sense. It's one thing to be competitive; it's another to think that someone has nothing to offer you or you them simply because of their gender.

We should chat more, but I don't want to fill up your challenge feed with my ramblings. :)

As always, I am proud of you and how you have matured spiritually and personally.

Friday was my last day working at Cincinnati, and the team saw me off in style. I did a bunch of work, but it was a nice day. We had time to have a big lunch of Indian food to send me off. I also got to hear some nice generic feedback from a few attendings. I think that I left on positive terms, so I'm hoping that these connections will serve me well in the years to come. When I got home, I went right to work packing up the stuff that I didn't need for tonight. I got a suitcase and a duffel full of clothes that I didn't need tomorrow and a lot of the bathroom stuff that I don't need. I did the dishes and started cleaning up the apartment too. Tomorrow I'm going to leave as soon as I can and start on the long drive back to Minneapolis with my Dragon cat. It's over 10 hours, but I'm feeling quite ready to return home.
