Shello's Nearly 6 Week No Frills Challenge

I'm shooting for a trifecta of pseudo-successful challenges.  By successful I don't necessarily mean that I stuck to all my goals but rather I've been successful in turning the corner on getting back to healthy habits overall.  For those who are new, this year started off at a low point and just got lower for what felt like a long while.  It was particularly devastating to my goals coming off of a less than successful year in 2017.  The timing is impeccable though, since this challenge ends right before the holidays.  I have no intentions of losing any weigh over the holidays; I will be right happy if I maintain, especially given the quantity of cookies and other baked goods I intend to eat for the holidays.  I'm extending this challenge into this zero week and a bit into the proceeding zero week, ending the day before Thanksgiving, giving my 5 -1/2 weeks of challenging to make as much progress as I can muster pre-holiday season.  

 

I'm keeping my goals simple and focused again on just food and fitness.  I'm sticking to a points based challenge, including bonuses, for maximum motivation.  The streak was not my friend last challenge so I'm making a few tweaks to avoid that in the event of another fit of plague or otherwise goal busting life event.  Rather than aiming for a streak and awarding chain bonus points, I'm simply removing the streak and just awarding points for hitting certain milestones.  I'm also simplifying the points (or I'm making it more complicated).  I really only cared about getting the highest points for each day so I'm essentiall removing the tiers.  I get a full point for meeting the goal, a half point for doing some basic minimum.  I am including 1/2 point bonuses for going above and beyond.

Food Goal

 

I'm not making many changes to this goal.  Last challenge I reduced my MFP calorie goal to 1800 with the intention of staying below it and only approaching it occasionally.  I approached it a bit more than I am comfortable, especially near the end of the challenge, but I also like the freedom of having the extra wiggle room.  I mean, I'd prefer a little extra wiggle room in my clothes but we're going for balance and sustainability.  I primarily stick to IF but I am flexible.  If I am truly hungry, I will listen to what my body says and eat earlier than my normal window.  However, I'd like to increase my fasting window by an hour.  I currently fast about 13 hours.  

  • 1 point for staying under target
  • 1/2 point for at least having a deficit of 750 according to Fitbit
  • +1/2 bonus point for eating at least 5 servings of freggies in a day

 

Bonus Points - awarded after hitting successful number of day milestones.  There are 38 days in the challenge, having 35 successful days, or 35 points, is considered a 'perfect' score.  

3 days = +3

7 days = +5

10 days = +10 (plus additional +1/2 bonus point saver to be used at any time)

15 days = +20

21 days = +50 (plus additional +1/2 bonus point saver to be used at any time)

27 days = +500

35 days = +1,000,000 

 

Fitness Goal

 

Last challenge I tried to raise the bar and I fell right under it.  I'd rather be doing something consistently than doing more inconsistently.  So it's back to an anything goes mentality for fitness.  I'd still like to avoid only doing the bare minimum so the points will help incentivize something slightly above bare minimum.  A bare minimum workout (BMW) is hard to define but I know when I've done it.  Simply walking around the block is a BMW, walking the entire neighborhood is not. Rucking around the block is not.  Walking, rucking, shovelgloving, BW, lifting, ellipticalling all count as workouts but as I am still aimless on the gym front I have no clear lifting goals.  Expect to see more cardio than anything else.  

  • 1 point for anything above a BMW
  • 1/2 for a BMW
  • +1/2 bonus point for hitting at least 10,000 steps  

 

Bonus Points - awarded after hitting successful number of day milestones.  My goal is about 5 workouts a week.  Given a 5-1/2 week challenge, 27 workout days, or 27 points, is considered a 'perfect' score.  

3 days = +3

7 days = +5

10 days = +10 (plus additional +1/2 bonus point saver to be used at any time)

15 days = +20

20 days = +50 (plus additional +1/2 bonus point saver to be used at any time)

24 days = +500

Week 0 Day 1

Off to a great start and it was mostly by accident.  I fasted until lunch and then had the usual.  Snack was clearly dark chocolate.  I had some porcupine meatballs for dinner but I had a little more than I needed.  I took the dog for a walk immediately after dinner to walk off the feeling of fullness.  We walked around to the park, then I let her play in the closed in baseball field until some kids joined me and she started to get too playful.  Then we walked through the woods, around another neighborhood and then up The Hill That Never Ends.  It turned out to be an hour.  Then I was off to a troop meeting.  I had intended to have a Magnum dark chocolate ice cream bar but I was also craving the lemon Oreo's.  After consulting MFP and realizing I could technically have both, I started with the Oreo's and then was never hungry enough for the ice cream bars.  I ended the day well under target.  

My scale seems to be broken.  I tried three times this morning to get a reading and it just continutes to wildly fluctuate without ever settling on anything in particular before shutting itself off.  This isn't how it normally reacts with a low battery so I think it may be time to shop for a new one.  On the one hand, it might be a good idea to skip the daily weigh ins and just keep an eye on other measures but on the hand - DATA!  I'm torn, but also a bit broke.  

 

Food - Under target, 1 freggy: +1 pts

Fitness - 1 hour walk, 10915 steps: +1.5 pts

 

Total Points: 2.5

I'm not even sure how to add gifs using Tapatalk.  It would severaly hinder my gif game... And once my office moves, I probably will have to resort to Tapatalk.

Week 0 Day 2-3

So I started this post, accidentally deleted it and started over 6 hours ago and then got totally sidetracked.  

 

Tuesday - I'm tired of busy nights but I guess this is what it means to be the mom of teenagers..and I only have 1 teen this week.  I was legit starving in the morning so I grabbed an english muffin to have once I got to work.  I topped it with the last of the Cheez Whiz and then PB and it was delish.   A coworker mentioned she had brought in some coffeecake.  I put it off but then after a meeting I came back to my desk to find a small plate sampling the pumpkin and apple walnut coffeecakes.  I at least set them aside until after lunch.  It was boss's day so another coworker brought me some cookies since I don't have any real staff.  So naturally I had some of those too.  I made some porcupine meatballs and mashed potatoes over the weekend so I had leftovers for dinner.  MFP was a challenge since I had to guess on logging all the baked goods from earlier in the day and then I didn't put much effort into measuring ingredients and serving sizes of the meatballs.  I finished the day with 1700 calories, hopefully it was conservative.  I had no time for a workout (technically I guess I could have made time but I didn't) since I had to go from supper to picking up the exchange student at school.  

Food - just Under target, 1 freggy, fasting window 8hrs: +1 pts

Current tally: 2pts

Fitness - no workout, 4600 steps: 0pts

Current tally: 1.5pts

 

Wednesday - Another day of playing fast and loose with the calories.  I know it's week 0 and all but I really need to reign it in.  I had planned  on eating in the cafeteria for what is basically fancy chicken nuggets and curly fries but I fasted until lunch so I wasn't worried about making it work.  One of our vendors also catered in pizza and desserts.  I skipped the pizza but did grab a few slices for dinner.  I did partake in the desserts though and grabbed a pumpkin bar and half a brownie.  Dinner was leftover pizza from earlier and a few monster cookies.  I continued to struggle with logging food.  I closed the day at a tentative 1600 calories depending on the accuracy of my guesses.  The scale is not agreeing so there's that. 

 

I felt really low in the evening so I basically just sat around at home contemplating whether adopting Dottie was the right call.  Adding spoiler since this turned into a word vomit situation.

I'm struggling again my with my mood and my energy levels.  My default setting is super busy but I'm still feeling overwhelmed.  If I take a look at all the things that take up my time, there isn't much I can cut..

  • I work 2 jobs and need them both
  • I have teens that need shuttling around
  • I have the exchange student that needs shuttling around, comes with various social engagements, and I feel the obligation to entertain her
  • I have a puppy that needs exercise, love, and training. 
  • I am treasurer for my son's boy scout troop but honestly I put off most of that stuff already.
  • On top of that I have hobbies and housework and yard work, Oh my! 

The only things I can cut are the exchange student and the dog.  But both are commitments and honestly the dog takes up more time than anything else (other than work). The last couple nights have been felt really trapped by having a dog.  I have trouble working on things around the house because the dog needs to be constantly managed.  She's basically a 4 legged toddler who bites and jumps on people.  I have trouble enjoying my hobbies because she gets in the way (imagine trying to crochet with a dog loose that keeps trying to steal my yarn and chew it to death).  I have trouble accomplishing things on my computer because I either have to stop what I'm doing every 2 minutes to see what she's gotten into or to redirect her so she'll stop jumping on my computer.  I have trouble relaxing and doing nothing for the same reasons.  She's in her kennel all day so I want to keep her out and entertained and exercised but there aren't enough hours in the evening to do that AND get my workout in so my workouts MUST be focused around the dog, which also feels limiting.  I need to spend the time to train her and I'm just losing the battle on time.  I end up feeling like having her around takes the joy out of my life rather than adding joy. 

 

But I got back and forth on this.  She won't be like this forever; it's a stage.  And the more trained she is the better.  If I can stick it out she's a great lovable dog.  Or maybe I'm just depressed and it's influencing my perspective.  But then again, I'm broke AF and I've already spent over $500 on her adoption, food, kennel, and vet care.  The obedience training that she needs is expensive too.  Maybe I'm just not financially in the position to do this pup any justice.  

Work has been stressful for the past week or so.  I am embroiled in some controversy at work.  I wanted to go straight to the source but I put it off for a few days because it's uncomfortable.  But yesterday I handled the situation like an adult and I'm glad I finally sucked it up.  I think there may still be some hard feelings but it's all on the table and we know where each other is coming from.

The kids help some on the weeks they are at my place.  But in general we are busier when they are becuase there is more shuttling the kids about for their activities and Qbert spends a TON of time doing homework.

Week 0 Day 4

 

Yesterday was a good day.  I fasted until lunch, 15 hours, and then had the usual.  For a snack I had a cheddar and salami snack pack with some crostinis.  It was very good.  I worked late and had no errands that needed to be done when I got home.  I did have to drop Qbert off at his dads and managed that with only a little drama.  I took the dog for a walk before it got dark.  I took the path around the park, through the woods, and over the next neighborhood again.  One of my friend's live along the way and he was out in the garage so I stopped by.  They hadn't seen Dottie yet so we made our introductions and talked for a short while.  Then I took The Hill That Never Ends home. 

 

I wasn't terribly hungry when I got back so I elected to skip dinner.  I did finish off the last 5 lemon Oreo cookies. I just ended up getting hungry later so I had a PBJ around 9.  I wasn't able to do anything productive; well I didn't try either.  After the walk, Dottie was still a bit energetic. I watched the last TWD episode and by the end she had decided to curl up next to me on the couch.  She's cute when she does that.  Then I put her to bed in her kennel and I went to bed and watched This is Us before going to bed a bit early.  The exchange student wasn't around much.  She went over to a friend's to study and when she got back she just went up to her room.  Overall, it was a lovely evening for me, though not a productive one.
