Welcome back for another episode of The Exciting Adventures of JediNickD! It was a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away that I joined this site and started my first challenge.. World 1 was my first extended stay through 22 challenges.  I took a hiatus from NF and came back with a new direction for my goals where I warped to World 2, which I defeated in a Boss Fight slaying some mighty big goals.

In World 3, I continue to develop my fitness, getting my body in the best shape of my life, even with the Degenerative Disc Disease, Arthritis, Disc Fissures, and more.  Through physical therapy exercises and karate, I have maintained my core and back muscles to ease the pressure off my spine, but in the end I defeated World 3 by transforming my life into a new form.  With chiropractic care for my spine, hitting the high ranks at karate, starting the new Toastmasters program called Pathways, and working to complete my Novice training at IJRS, World 4 feels like something new everyday.

I just keep on L-I-V-I-N, fight the good (and healthy) fight, and level up my life!

Challenge Lesson:  "Light.  Darkness.  A Balance"     [WARNING!  The Last Jedi and Karate Kid SPOILERS below]

When Luke begins training Rey, he has her sit on a rock eyes closed to reach out and sense the Force:

Quote

Luke Skywalker: Breathe. Just breathe. Now reach out. What do you see?

Rey: Light. Darkness. A balance.

Luke Skywalker: It's so much bigger.

Balance is everywhere.  It is in the duality of nature, opposing forces and laws of conservation in physics, and in Star Wars, it is in the Force.  The Original Trilogy deals heavily in the duality of the Force with Light versus Dark, Jedi versus Sith, Good versus Evil.  The Prequel Trilogy muddies the water a little with the Prophecy claiming a chosen one will bring balance to the Force, which can be argued is fulfilled by Vader, first reducing the Jedi order to two Jedi, then killing the emperor, but is the Prophecy real?  How many Force wielders exist in the galaxy which we do not even know about?  And so on...  The Sequel Trilogy is playing with the duality of dark and light, but it is appearing less about the confrontation between the two and more about how the two complement each other.  One cannot exist without the other.  Snoke says, "Darkness rises and light to meet it," then explains, "I warned my young apprentice that as he grew stronger, his equal in the light would rise."  Here's a great article about the lines: https://medium.com/@AliyaSmyth/the-most-important-line-in-the-last-jedi-no-one-is-talking-about-2af5996d1b8

There is more to learn coming in Episode IX about this relationship, but back on Earth, we live with balance everyday.  Most are physical elements working with and against each other, which are easy to see and understand, but the mental aspects take a bit of experience to begin to construe the cause and effect elements which influence the balance.

In exercise, balance is extremely important, like "don't skip leg day" because strong legs are just as important as strong arms.  My back muscle and spine issues are a testament to balance.  My body was grown for downhill running and forward momentum power playing football and rugby as adolescent.  I neglected to strengthen my lower back or gain flexibility in my hips or abdomen.  My body was a rolling boulder which could take hits and keep moving.  With all the time punishing my body and neglecting proper exercise balance, my spine and back worsen.  These days, I'm learning more and more about proper exercises to help build these problem areas and maintain a proper balance.

Karate has been awesome for building balance as well, but even before I started taking karate, I always liked to refer to the original film series "The Karate Kid" to describe this concept of balance.  I'll stick with only the 1984 first film in the series to keep this post short (well, shorter).  If you haven't seen it (It is on cable constantly!  How could you not?), then let me explain it quickly.  The first film in the series is a straight forward story about two characters.  The main character is a teenage boy named Daniel who moves clear across the country from New Jersey to California.  In his new school, Daniel has trouble making friends being bullied by a group of kids from the same karate dojo, the Cobra Kais.  The second character is a handyman martial arts master named Mr. Miyagi who agrees to teach Karate to Daniel to help him with his bullying issues.  While teaching Karate, Miyagi demonstrates that there is more to the martial art than fighting.  He taught Daniel many concepts for better living: the main one being balance.

After Daniel learns to block, his next lesson is to learn to balance his body.  Daniel is eager to learn to punch, but to quell Daniel’s eagerness Miyagi dispatches this wisdom, “Better learn balance. Balance is key.  Balance good, karate good.  Everything good.  Balance bad, better pack up, go home.”  Daniel learns to keep his body balanced for his karate moves to efficient and effective without giving his opponents opportunity.  Later, the night before the karate tournament Daniel admits his nervous and scared, Miyagi helps Daniel see the bigger picture by saying, “Remember lesson about balance?  Lesson not just karate only.  Lesson for whole life.  Whole life have a balance.  Everything be better.”  Daniel gets it at the end of the movie after he is hurt in the tournament, he is given the option to forfeit the final match.  Miyagi feels Daniel has proved himself to win respect from the bullies going further than anyone expected.  Daniel sees the injury and forfeit as the Cobra Kais getting a cheap out.  He explains to Miyagi that forfeiting won't give him the balance between himself and the Cobra Kais, nor with himself and his girlfriend, Ally, who is a friend of the Cobra Kais.  He has to finish the fight.  Win or lose, it would show he is not going to let anything keep him down.  That warrior mentality along with his prowess as a karate student is something the Cobra Kais will respect.

Balance is the key for everyday living.  For diet, you have your "balanced breakfast".  You should have three "square" meals a day.  Of course, there are other moderate diet options with snacking through out the day, 5 small meals, etc.  Your workday and home life needs to be balanced to keep both your employer and family happy.  Your body needs to be balanced to stay upright.  Your body weight and muscles needs to be balanced to avoid back problems.

I see this balance lesson at Toastmasters as well.  A Toastmasters participation in meetings should have a balance.  There are several different roles, each with their own specific lessons.  Prepared speeches teach you how to prepare and formulate a speech.  Table Topics teaches you to think on your feet.  Speech evaluator teaches you to give encouraging feedback.  The leadership roles teach you organization, scheduling, problem solving, coaching, listening, improvisation, and encouragement.  To get the full benefits from Toastmasters you need to experience each role.  Your Toastmasters experience needs to have a balance.

Your whole life needs to have a balance.  Weigh things to compare, contrast, and compromise.  Use moderation in all things to avoid extremes.  Find the light and the dark, then understand where the grey is.

Ranger Mini challenge is a Headspace challenge.  The goal is to clean up the mind to allow it to focus and get work completed.  I've got a few big tasks which I keep sidelining or drawing out longer for no good reason.  Time to figure out the mental blocks and get through to completion.

It is a lot simpler to walk the Jedi path, or any path really, if you are not laden with baggage: physical, mental or emotional. This baggage can develop into blocks which can obstruct and impede you on your path.  I have some very specific 'blocks' which may hinder me in many ways, from accomplishing tasks and procrastinating to developing my awareness and intuition.

My two main blocks with which I constantly struggle are intellectual and disorganization.  The intellectual block influences my development of my awareness and intuition, which has not been as big of an issue recently.  I'm much more open about new ideas and approaches than I have been in the past.  Sticking to a strict meditation schedule has helped force my hand.  :-D

My disorganization block is part of my need to control and organize things. When things are organized logically, then naturally they are easy to find. This allows my intuition to act on instinct such as finding a book on a shelf and flipping directly to a chapter I intended. It also helps if I personally organize things, because then I have exactly how everything is stored in my memory, which I trust down to every neuron. If someone else happens to clean up my house, then it is actually more stressful at first than a cluttered mess from yesterday. It is eerily similar to my intellectual block in regards to trust.

The second part of the block comes from the stress of needing to clean up a mess which is more obsessive compulsive disorder than a need to know where to find things. I loathe stepping on things because I don't like breaking things and I don't like hurting my feet which I use every day. I loathe other people's filth so I always feel the need to throw other people's garbage away. It gets in the way of me having a clear head to make decisions about anything.

I feel the disorganization block is part of why I am avoiding completing some tasks, especially at home.  I am pulled towards organizing things which may have a higher priority.  Some times, I just can't work on the higher priority organization for some reason, then my brain throws its hands up for doing anything useful.  It is debilitating in some ways.

With some other projects, I might just be uncomfortable with where it is left and do not want to come back to it.  I am constantly fighting my will to work on these things.  Once in a better state, I feel better about them, but until they get there, it is a constant struggle.

148.8 lbs this morning.  Cold 40 min run.  Felt good once I warmed up.

I conducted a Youth Public Speaking Workshop for two kids and two parents.  It went really great even though I forgot my handouts.  I felt like I made an impact on the group.

Today is my wife and I's anniversary, so I may be eating a little heavier this evening.  She wants to go to Texas Roadhouse and I sent her a Edible Arrangement with chocolate and caramel dipped fruit.  Should be great!  ;-)

148.4 lbs this morning.  Ran, exercised, and stretched for 20 min each yesterday morning, then had karate class in the evening.  This morning I played racquetball for an hour.  Then, because I was at the gym early, I stretched for 20 min and did karate forms for 10 min.  It's been a busy couple days.  Tonight, there isn't anything planned, so I expect we will be working on the basement.  I am hoping the convince the family to watch "Critters".  The kids have seen Gremlins and Monster Squad, so this should be right up their alley.  I'll have Spaced Invaders on deck since it is one of our traditional Halloween movie.

Saturday morning, I am planning to go to karate class for study hall and spar.  At class tonight, I worked on power and speed for my kicks and punches.  It was the kind of class I really needed to get details for me to improve my techniques on my own.  I think it will really help me in spar class, where I am slow with my strikes allowing counters.  In point spar, I should be able to sneak strikes in and steal some points.  The most important take away from the class, though, was that the instructor helped me with "how" to loosen up or relax.  They want me to strike like a whip or ball and chain, as oppose to a solid club, but until last night no one had looked at what I was doing and figured out what I needed to do different.  This is especially important for speed which is why he recognized my issues and helped me.  I can't wait to work on the techniques more.

Wow!  October is almost over, which means Extra Life Game Day is just around the corner.  It's actually this Saturday!  Holy Carp!  I'm not ready!  My NES and Sega are still buried in my basement.  I have the N64 setup with Golden Eye in the living room, but, while running through a test with the kids, my memory card glitched when the system was jostled from dogs jumping and barking.  It lost everything.  So sad... Maybe, since I can't get out the other systems, I'll just play 007 all day and beat the game again.

I still have so much to do!  I didn't get my new recorder working.  I didn't set up the PC yet.  I didn't set up my new camera yet.  I can't do any of it until Friday because of all the other carp going on in my house before then.

At least, it looks like the home event will be smaller, so I can dedicate more time to playing, recording, and streaming and less time to entertaining and feeding people.

Anyway, for those here looking to get a peak, I'll probably post my streams to my donation page, https://www.extra-life.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=donordrive.participant&participantID=299314, but they will most definitely be on my YouTube Channel, https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCOY2v4ak16rLfihVu4b8JAA

The memory card was not erased!  It just wouldn't load for some reason.  It worked last night while I tested out the RCA Splitter (to feed to the PC for recording/streaming).  The splitter worked just fine too.  I have an RCA to HDMI adapter coming tomorrow to feed the split signal to my AverMedia capture device.  I have an RCA to USB adapter for recording VHS to DVD, which I can also try out.  I tested out the camera on the laptop.  Far superior to the built in camera.

Goofed around in Halo last night with the kids.  Its what they wanted to do.  For me, it was a dry run of the best options to put in for the game scenarios.  I may consider moving the retro games to a 42" TV instead of the 120" projector screen.  The large screen makes the N64 graphics difficult to to play.  We need to cram all 4 players together anyway to get on the camera.  We'll see.

Halloween was a success.  My Chewbacca and Porg costume was fun.  I had the Porg dressed up as an Ewok with a trick or treat bag.

After the kids were in bed, my wife and I painted the basement playroom (temporary bedroom for a guest and storage so we can finish the other basement room).  Also, I cleaned up the roommate's bedroom.  He'll be on crutches after having a big toe amputated after a bad infection.  He stubbed it hard on a 2x4 in the basement.  Due to his diabetes, he just didn't heal and it got infected.

148.0 lbs yesterday.  Stretch, cardio, and karate.  Worked on my forms.

148.2 lbs this morning.  Stretch, cardio, and exercise.  Pull ups and squats.

Tonight is senpai and class karate night.  Tomorrow is racquetball and setup for Extra Life, which will mostly be getting the desktop situated and downloading the software I want to use to stream and games I want to play.  It looks like I will be doing emulated NES and Sega on the desktop, plus I want to play a bit of the Magic the Gathering video game from 1997, originally released for Windows 95.

147.6 lbs this morning.  Racquetball was blast, but between it and karate last night, I am dragging today.  I was planning an early bedtime after setting up for Extra Life streaming, but we'll be babysitting until 9pm tonight, which means I can either sleep or setup tonight, not both.  I may have to delay my setup time until the morning.  At least, I would be unhindered by other people in the morning, but I'd also delay my kickoff time and make my 24 hour period drift further into Sunday.  Ugh.  No good choices.  Another option is to setup tonight and kickoff game play for a few hours, then go to bed and get up later.  I like this option a bit better as it will at least bring my stress level down, since I will know I'm all ready to go when I wake up.

What's the Extra Life thing?

https://www.extra-life.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=donordrive.participant&participantID=299314

Extra-Life is a fundraiser supporting Children's Miracle Network Hospitals with a 24-hour Gaming Marathon where participants stream video games and table top games to raise awareness and funds for the kids.  My local Children's Miracle Network Hospital, Johns Hopkins Children Center, treats thousands of children each year, regardless of their family's ability to pay. These kids are facing scary stuff like cancer, cystic fibrosis, and injuries from accidents to name just a few.

My youngest daughter, Serafina, had an overnight stay at their hospital when she was experiencing overwhelming acid reflux issues.  A tube was snaked down her throat to her stomach for the doctors to examine the acidic damage.  Fin is all healed up now and doing great.  Fortunately, Fin's medical needs and expenses were minor.  Not all kids and families are so lucky.  That is where Extra Life and the Children's Miracle Network come in.

I've raised almost $2000 in my three years participating playing retro games like The Legend of Zelda and Halo 3.  It's fun and supports a great cause.  I'm not the most entertaining, but I have a great network of friends and family who support me.

149.8 lbs this morning.  Lots of stretching and light exercise.  I hurt my back yesterday morning playing basketball, just shooting and chasing.  I pushed off with my right foot as I turned, then pain shot up my leg and back.  I crumbed to the ground and took a while to get up.  I limped through the day, icing on and off, plus taking pain relief and muscle relaxers.  My pain level today is half of what it was yesterday.  Won't need any more muscle relaxers, but I need to keep up the icing and anti-inflammatory medicine.  No fun, and I have karate tonight and tomorrow.  Ugh.

I had recovered by Thursday evening, but karate was cancelled due to snow and sleet.  I was able to play racquetball and do karate on Saturday.  This week has been sore on an off, but doing fine.
