This level was going great, until it wasn’t.  And then, boy howdy was is NOT.  Looks like I am not high enough level for this area.  Time to go back a bit and grind XP so I don’t get flattened again!

Buffs:

What’s the easiest way to get buffs?  Food!  I need to eat well if I want to level up.

Goal: pack a healthy lunch every day for work, and cook a healthy breakfast every weekend.  Edit: Also, drink at least 8 cups of water every day.

0/28 - food

0/28 - water

Mobs:

How to grind XP?  Kill random monsters.  Whatever’s there.

Goal:  Do a minimum of 15 minutes of some kind of exercise every day, and skate at least twice a week.

0/28 - exercise

0/8 – skating

Rested XP:

Leveling up goes much faster when you have the awesome rested XP gainz.

Goal: get at least 8 hours of sleep every night.

0/28

Super simple, but I am focusing on establishing small things that I can do consistently, especially around the holiday crazy.  Once these are solid, I’ll start adding other stuff in (in subsequent challenges).  Also, not doing anything during zero week this time, because Thanksgiving, and no sense starting when I know I won't be able to meet my goals.  I want to start strong, not muddling through and then trying to get back on track.

We've all had to go back and grind a bit before facing a boss. I'll be following.

Zero week summary!

I ate whatever, didn't do a ton of exercise, and generally tried to take it easy.  Except for the part where I went to practice two days in a row.  It was good, but now I'm sore.  I also realized that I have gotten chronically low on water, so fixing that is now getting added to this challenge.  And I had driven home to me just how asleep my glutes are and how tight my hips are, so that's going to (try to be) a focus of my exercise for this challenge.

My Garmin says I got 8.5 hours of sleep, though it wasn't the best quality (woke up in the middle of the night by a little boy who had a bad dream).  And I have lunch packed.  It's not the healthiest, but it's close enough.  Off to a good start for week 1!

Horray for great starts! :D

What sort of things do you take for lunch? I'm trying to start doing that myself, but have defaulted to leftovers and Giant Rubbermaids of Snacking Veggies. I am slightly overwhelmed by the nine thousand choices out there... (although bento boxes look adorable!)

Today was leftovers from the Mexican place we went to on Saturday. Tomorrow is going to be leftovers from dinner tonight (spiced ground turkey with a bunch of veggies). In general and when I am doing well with eating healthy, I try to make enough of whatever dinner is to be lunch tomorrow. For this challenge, I'm probably going to be picking stuff from my paleo cookbooks and the Blogilates 28 day reset cookbook that don't require a ton of cooking since I'm only focusing on lunches. If I really don't have time to get anything ready, I'll probably end up stopping at the store on the way to work and grabbing some pepperoni, fruit and/or veggies, and a yogurt.

Did he tell you what the dream was?  I used to love listening to Ghostlet's nightmares.  The funniest was the one where all of his toy cars turned into fried chicken legs.  The worst part (for him) was that the chicken legs didn't even taste good, all dry and stringy :D :D :D

He did not. They've had some pretty crazy ones in the past, though.  But he just crawled in bed, said he had a bad dream, and went back to sleep.  I don't think my kids would be phased by their cars turning into fried chicken, other than maybe getting upset they didn't have wheels anymore which would make them harder to push around. :)

Day One update!

1/28 - food

1/28 - water

1/28 - exercise

0/8 – skating

1/28 - sleep

Packed lunch, had TONS of water, and managed to do 15 minutes of yoga, despite having some technical difficulties with my videos.  Unfortunately, that resulted in me getting to bed a bit later than I had wanted to, so I will be a bit short on sleep for day 2, but still not too bad.

Day 2

2/28 - food

2/28 - water

2/28 - exercise

1/8 – skating

1/28 - sleep

Packed my lunch, but ended up going to a restaurant with my mom before she caught her flight home. Still counting it, because I did the thing even if I didn't eat it, and what I did eat was still healthy.

Solidly met my water goal. As mentioned before, a bit short on sleep.

Went to my last derby practice for probably the year. It was a good practice, but I have very mixed feelings about leaving. We did the 5 minute skate near the start of practice. I think I've finally figured out my stride on the track. Ended up half a lap short, but that was the best I've done. And then I made my back angry near the end of practice and had to sit out a drill while I stretched it out. I managed to get it to calm down enough to finish practice and then took some advil when I got off the track. It feels ok so far today, so here's hoping it stays that way.

One of the new leagues is having a new skater night on Dec 19th, but I think they don't actually have a practice until next year, so I need to keep skating until then. The roller rink has an exercise class that looks to be a good possibility. I'm probably going to give that a shot tonight, unless I decide I'm too tired or my back gets grouchy.

Edit:  How could I forget to mention that out of the blue, completely unprompted by me, Husband told me that he wants to do an experiment for the month of December - eat healthy (by eating more veggies and protein and reducing empty calories), go to the gym twice a week, and give intermittent fasting a shot. :love-struck:

Silly backs. Let us know how the exercise class is if you wind up going!

What does it look like to practice skating without a formal practice? Are there rinks that are more geared toward derby people with like... open gym time? Or is it more like a public skate situation (like an ice skating rink)? Genuinely curious! :)

Right?!?  Apparently my years of flailing at being healthy with moderate success has been slowly sinking in. :)

I will definitely report back on the class!

What does practicing without a formal practice look like?  Depends on what I want to do.  Typically it's just going to open skating at the rink and then doing stuff like skating around in a really low squat for as long as I can, weaving through people (politely), working on stops, stuff like that.  If I've got Little One with me, it's also fairly good jammer awareness practice as I tend to keep any eye behind us to make sure no one is going to run him over.  Which, yes, that's actually happened to Little Bug when he was tiny (I was a tad too far away to block for him).

I've yet to come across a rink that had derby "open gym" but that would be amazing if somewhere did though probably hard to organize/keep safe.  Other options are skate parks, skating outside (like, going for a run, but on skates), or spending time working on specific skills by myself/with a video.  I haven't found any here yet (beyond the approx monthly one hosted by my current league), but in Seattle there were several leagues that would host semi-regular open scrimmages that typically included some time working on drills as well.

Day 3

3/28 - food

3/28 - water

3/28 - exercise

1/8 – skating

1/28 - sleep

Ended up not going to the skating exercise class last night, but did do a half hour of yoga with the boys.  My back seems mostly better, but I also moved the wrong way at one point during yoga and it yelled at me again.  Still fairly sure it's either my hip flexor that's sore or it's something in my back trying to compensate for my super tight hips.  Skating class next week for sure, though!

Aw, poor kiddo. Yeah, I do imagine that would be a bit harder to get practice in, but very good for awareness!

Day 4

4/28 - food

4/28 - water

4/28 - exercise

1/8 – skating

1/28 - sleep

Got to bed only a few minutes late last night, but little boys woke up super early this morning and woke me up, so I ended up short on sleep. Doing good on food and water, though I have nothing to pack for lunch at home so it looks like I'll be swinging by the grocery store in the morning.

Took the boys to see Ralph Breaks the Internet, which was pretty great. Now I'm going to go stretch for 15 minutes and then go to bed.

...I should maybe change my avatar back to normal from my Halloween one.

I was going to try to explain a bit about what's going on with my back, but I used all my brain fine-tuning my resume and cover letter to apply for a job, and I can't figure out how to write something that doesn't sound like I'm being a pompous ass, so I'm just going to say thank you.  I was going to say thank you in with the explanation as well.  See, I still can't write something decent! :P

I do love Halloween, but as much as I get upset about Christmas trying to take over Halloween, I don't want to be Jack Skellington, either. :)  I think I'll try to find a cool Christmas avatar, and then go back to my normal one in January.

Day 5

5/28 - food

5/28 - water

5/28 - exercise

1/8 – skating

1/28 - sleep

Almost got to bed on time. Probably would have been close enough that I'd have counted it, except I got woken up early by getting a little boy head slammed into my nose. It's still ever so slightly sore. :(

Lunch was grabbed from the grocery store, but I said that counted, and I had plenty to drink.

Did 15 minutes of stretching again for my exercise.

Other than sleep, I'm doing great on this challenge!

I also officially left my derby league last night, so now I'm a skater without a league for a month (or possibly longer, if I don't like the one I'm checking out in a couple weeks). It's a really weird feeling. I'm sad, because I like derby, but it's also a little bit freeing because other than while we were moving it's the first time in years I haven't had practices to go to.

Breakfast wasn't perfect, but it wasn't donuts! Took Little One skating (Little Bug decided he didn't want to go), so got to check off skating and exercise early in the day. Didn't get my daily water until late, but I got it. And I finally got enough sleep!

Day 7

7/28 - food

6/28 - water

7/28 - exercise

2/8 – skating

3/28 - sleep

Kalua pork lightly fried, with a bit of sweet chili sauce, scrambled with an egg and served in a lettuce cup is a delicious breakfast. Did not drink enough water today, but did have a fair bit of other beverages. A bit short on liquid though, so I can't even argue that it should count anyway. Got lots of sleep last night. Going to do some yoga before I go to bed, so checked that off.

Over all, week one went really well!

It occurs to me that since I don't have practice anymore, and the new league I am probably going to join is on break until January, now would be a good time to try to lose a bunch of weight. I am going to think really hard today and I about whether I want to stick with my current plan or try to lose a bunch of weight in the next month since I can actually take the performance loss right now.

I love kalua pork. Good job with week 1!

Trying for weight loss over the holidays may be a bit tricky, but if it's something you decide you want to try to pursue, I'm sure you can manage some! A month isn't actually very long, so I wouldn't get too hyper focused on a specific number.

Is it that you want to ditch weight, or change your body comp? Either way, as you say, now is the time to do it if you're between leagues. Grats on a successful week 1.

Thanks!  I'm pleased that I managed to mostly stick to my plan.

I know a month isn't that much, but since I don't have derby right now, it doesn't matter as much if I'm on the top of my game, so I could cut calories more.  I am after fat loss, preferably without losing the muscle I currently have.  But, given the amount of muscle and fat I have, I am fairly sure losing the fat will result in an overall weight loss as well.  I care significantly less about the number on the scale than about the way I look.  Actually, I don't care about the number on the scale other than it being another data point.  Which, I guess, is more in the category of recomp.

After thinking about it, I have decided that I'm not going to be able to stick to a drastic change (been there, done that, that's why I'm not doing that now), but I do want to try to take advantage of the lack of derby to lose more fat.  So, I am going to stick with my current plan and add soft goals of meeting my step goal (per Garmin) every day and to make an effort to avoid grains and (too much) added sugar.  I think those are doable and will hopefully help me make some decent progress.
