books for gifts! heading to an independent bookstore tomorrow to get gifts for like 5 people.

Oh, of course.

My 2 bffs and I started doing books for Christmas a couple of years ago to share our faves with each other. I also always give one to my dad (already got that one though) and one to one of my Secret Santa giftees. And... like 6 for myself.

I forgot all of my workout clothes, so I only got by with a little help from my friends... CLOTHED BY KINDNESS.

I'll say it again, most gyms are WAY TOO UPTIGHT about requiring clothes for workouts.

This week's episode of Reading Glasses podcast is all about book recommendations for gifts, btw.

Day 2.3

I realized during this lifting workout that I did not fully mentally map out how much time I actually have left before the in-house powerlifting comp. In my mind, I had time for heavy dl doubles workout, heavy doubles for squat and bench, volume for squat and bench, an openers day, and a light day. All before next Saturday.

This is why it is impossible to program for yourself x)

Beginning of this year you had someone else write for you.. so I guess that didn't work out well? What'd I miss? Tell me all the drama!?

And thank you for making me feel all fuzzy warm and welcome <3

Ahaha. Well I had a kind of semi-coaching arrangement at this other gym I tried going to briefly. However, it was pretty much their cookie cutter program and not really customized for me in a way that was helpful. AND I didn't like the gym in the end -- it had too much of the macho alpha bullshit that I do not enjoy in any environment, but especially in my gym. I had been alternating between that place and the gym I'm in now, but made the swap to fully train at the current spot -- which has a good amount of peer coaching and feedback, but no one is going to program for you, haha.

I'm considering getting someone to at least program for me after gymnastics season, but I don't know -- I feel like that would mean I'm trying. And I get by so well being mediocre in all things. :P

PSYCH! Quiet weekends are not allowed in Raptron-world.

Day 2.5

I should have taken a rest day... but I wanted to socialize! So I went to the gym and my body said ... "lol this is not the rest day we asked for."

Pause squats

5 x 135#

5 x 165#

3 x 185#

5 x 3 x 225#

Bench

5 x 75#

2 x 5 x 95#

3 x 110#

3 x 125#

5 x 1 x 135# <-- these were all supposed to be doubles and go up to 140# but my bench was not cooperating (see: needing a rest day, etc.)

Band lat pull-downs: 3 x 20

Toes-to-bar medley: 3 x 4 (middle, right, left, middle)

Day 2.6

Meet day! I've never competed in the December meet, so right out of the gate it was clear this would be my best December meet. ;) My middle finger I sprained last month (?) has kept me from training bars at all, so I just competed balance beam and floor. Both routines were just my routines from last season, so nothing that new or excited happened there yet. But our leos are new! So that's exciting:

2e22fae65c455831b53d9553b7433ce9.png

I managed to stay on the balance beam (woo!) despite many big wobbles and balance checks, which was a big victory, haha.

I hadn't done my floor routine will full tumbling in it since April, but pulled that out just fine during the meet (thanks, adrenaline!). I even competed the front handspring + front layout as my last pass instead of a front handspring + front pike (the layout is harder but worth the same).

I got ~8.5 on both routines, which is fair. I'm optimistic about cleaning up my floor routine over the season (fixing and crisp-i-fying some of the choreo sections, really committing to one of my jumps/leaps that usually looks great in warm-up, but shitty in competition because I rush through it). Ideally, I will be swapping out the first pass (front handspring + front tuck step-through + round-off + back tuck) for a front handspring + front pike + front tuck, which will take less energy and hopefully look nicer/mean fewer deductions.

For balance beam, I'm hoping to swap out the cartwheel series for the front walkover + round-off combination I've been training in practice. And maybe replacing the back walkover with a back handspring (though the finger sprain makes me a bit nervous about starting to train them again). And front pike dismount instead of front tuck just because it would look prettier. And... stop wobbling the whole time, but we'll see.

The meet took a long time to finish up because the men only had 2 judges (and 6 events), so we just really had time to grab some dinner and change before we had the team holiday party.

Day 2.7

Sunday, Sunday, Sunday. I was up late at the party and after, with some drinking involved, as per usual. Savage Games had a relatively late start compared to Games of the past, so I didn't have to be there until 10:30 AM. We (me and two of my teammates) picked up a stray who is quite strong and does the similar-ish workout classes the gym runs during the week to be the fourth member of our team. I was slightly hungover, but coffee and adrenaline work wonders.

Savage Games, if you haven't been following me forever, is a 2-hour workout of stations ranging from parkour to bouldering to body puzzles. We did the following station (iirc): piggyback racing and squats, running through a tube on hands and knees to match shoes and bring them back, ab wheel partner wheelbarrowing (this was hard, haha), touching randomly lighting up lights in a dark room, "make your bodies fit into these lines" puzzles (rest station), lego building (rest station lol), bouldering problems, agility tires and partnered bear crawls, swinging rings, med ball throws, slacklining, climbing and throwing a hula hoop onto cones, group rail balancing, parkour vaulting, parkour jungle gym climbs, wall climbs, floor is lava jumping course, and a floor is lava group sandbag navigation course thing. Each station is 5 minutes long with a 1 minute transition.

I'd say none of them were that strength intensive for me, other than tired hands/grip on the climbing stations. The parkour stations were basically hard sprinting cardio. I laid on the ground between some of them, haha.

491f4ed0ad08ee0451d167d0d265eece.png

After that, I did a bit of shopping but didn't actually find much of what I was looking for (blah), but did eat pierogi and get a donut, so all was not lost.

In bed before 11p: 9/9

Square meals: 8/8 workday, 2/2 weekend

Pampering: 4/4 weighted PT exercises, 0/1 massage, 2/2 yoga, 0/1 self-gift

Day 3.2

I dragged ass trying to get into the gym last night. BUT, I made it after all. I needed to do a day of openers for the mock meet on Saturday and while Monday would have been preferable, it was rest day, ok?

Squats: 3 singles at 275#, they were a bit slower than I want for a real meet opener, but 1) this is going to be a no-stakes mock meet in my own gym and 2) my body was still under recovered

Bench: 3 singles at 130# -> same story. My right tricep is SUPER sore and tight from Savage Games still. It's my stronger side, so I feel like I was leading with it on all of the parkour and wall climbs.

Deadlifts: 3 singles at 290# -> these were actually fine.

Sweet, cool. Ate collards and ground turkey mixed into my mac and cheese with some feta that turned out surprisingly good. I had planned on making a big batch of a riff on One Pot Quinoa Greens Pilaf but foolishly didn't realize I had used all of my grains already and adapted. :P

In bed before 11p: 10/13

Square meals: 9/12 workday, 2/3 weekend <-- have rice, beans, and collards with pulled chicken the next couple of days.

Pampering: 4/6 weighted PT exercises, 0/1 massage, 2/3 yoga, 0/1 self-gift

W: light squats and bench and PT today

Th: gymnastics

F: yoga at lunch rest otherwise. Might stop by a holiday party to say hello, but not going to drink or stay out late.

S: in house mock meet at 10am. There is a post-meet bonfire/cookout situation up at one of the gym owner's places that I might go to if I can figure out a ride back in time for my friends' ugly sweater party.

S: Maybe gymnastics + early celebrations for my friend's birthday + HOPEFULLY Hot Mess Sunday because Ms. Jasmine Masters HERSELF will be here. Hot Mess Sunday is hard though. Queens usually don't come on until 12 - 12:30 am.

Meh, if it was cookie cutter then it was definitely not worth going to a gym you didn't like.. and the general atmosphere is só important. Peer coaching and feedback can be really nice in the right gym, where there are knowledgable people :)

You do get by very well without trying, it might be fun to see where you'd get with some extra thought behind the programming.. but really doing work and being consistent is like 90% of the game anyway, the 10% is nice, might be fun.. but.. well.. hehe. When does gymnastics season end anyway?

Definitely! It's great for "hey, can you look at this lift" and "what accessory should I do for x" but still not nearly as good as actually having a coach.

I mean 10% would be pretty neat... Hehe. Gymnastics season ends in mid-April. Nationals is in Daytona Beach this year #springbreak! Some of my lifting crew are doing a lifting competition the same weekend, which means we can all be on the same prep cycle for the following comp in the later summer or fall, which would be cool.

I don't LOVE powerlifting competitions, but it is fun to do it with other folks, and doing one a year seems like a not-too-terrible way to benchmark my progress. :P

Day 3.3

I know my little schedule above said light volume lifting for Wednesday night, but honestly, I didn't really want to and my body still felt kind of BLAH, so I took it as another rest day -- in the spirit of the challenge! I did some errands, including checking the climbing gym for a pair of my glasses I've seem to have misplaced. They didn't have them. My self-gift this holiday season might just wind up being new glasses.

December is always busy when it comes to errands and keeping track of things, but it is now more complicated for me on the personal news front.

Hubstron and I are splitting up. It's amicable, mutual, and has been kind on the horizon for a bit now. We're still going to be cohabitating for another week or so and are doing well on that front, IMO. But it does mean -- all other emotional things aside -- moving. And moving means a lot more shit to do!

I'm going to need to find a new spot for me and my fluffball for mid-January or Feb 1, probably. If that doesn't wind up happening, I have had a lot of offers to stay with friends or I could stay on at the apartment for another few weeks, if needed. The landlords are pretty flexible. But anyway, yep. Got plenty on my plate now.

Also, I know a couple of people on here who have gotten divorced just this year, I can put you in touch with them as well if you like.

Thanks, folks. <3  I'm getting lots of love and support from everyone in my network so far -- excepting my mother, but you know... moms.

I went straight from dorms to living together, so I haven't had my own bedroom since high school! There will definitely be a transition, for sure. And yeah, even when it makes the most sense and we both think we'll be better off, it doesn't mean it is easy. I may or may not use this place to talk about FeElInGs which are usually pretty notably absent in here unless I'm complaining about a bad gym day.

Moving... well... new experiences, new decor, not all bad? x)

Not-too-terrible at all! It'll be good to be on a similar cycle as the rest. Are there people at that gym with a coach? Maybe try out one of theirs.
