1 comp a year seems like a great way to check in on progress! And it seems like it works out to a nice two sports for two seasons for you, no?

On the life front

Spoiler

Sorry to hear, friend - even when amicable, I know it's a lot of FEELINGS in addition to the logistical stuff. I've gone through what I call a "preemptive divorce" (aka breaking up post-engagement and pre-wedding) if you ever need to talk to a friend who's gone through something similar. Or just feel free to F word away here, it's all welcome.

I may or may not use this place to talk about FeElInGs which are usually pretty notably absent in here unless I'm complaining about a bad gym day.

Sometimes feels are more important to talk about around here than fitness pursuits.

Hm. If you've been together for very long it might be a little hard to figure out who you are without that person.. but you do have this very rich life full of hobbies and general insanity so I hope all turns out well.

It's true! I have a very busy life, and honestly, we've had very separate lives for some time now and that is probably part of the split, so I don't think a lot will change on that front. I've got my activities, which are many. SO MANY.

Moving... well... new experiences, new decor, not all bad? x)

Haha, definitely.

Not-too-terrible at all! It'll be good to be on a similar cycle as the rest. Are there people at that gym with a coach? Maybe try out one of theirs.

Yes! There is a woman who is just a bit stronger than me but accelerating at a pretty quick clip who works with a local coach. I don't drive, so I'm not sure I'd see them much in person, but someone to program and text with/form check periodically could be a good fit and hers seems to know what he's doing.

Yeah, basically! I don't normally do the meet in December, but the season for gymnastics is about December through mid-April, which leaves me a lot of time for powerlifting. Before, I was doing gymnastics Jan - Apr, obstacle courses May - Sept, and then primarily focused on lifting Oct - Dec. Buuut, OCRs are not very important to me and my friend who I always ran with is on a slow return back from injury, so hopefully I can just avoid them for the most part going forward. I like them fine, but they are expensive and make me feel like I need to train running more, which isn't really compatible with the other two sports goals, haha.

Thanks. We've been living together since 2008, married since 2011, and were dating for like 2 years before that. So... a while, man, a while. People change, epecially when you started dating as teens!

Day 3.4

Practice was sluggish and hard. Everyone in my office (and on the boards, apparently) is sick, and I feel like I could be fighting off something because energy has been really low the last few days and I've been a tiny bit sniffly. I'm hoping it doesn't blow up into a real sick because I was just sick like a month ago and that wouldn't be fair. :P

That said, I did manage to throw 3 front handspring + front pike + front tucks, all to my ass because I was rushing them. But at least that is another step back in the right direction. Otherwise, I did some balance beam and worked on my front walkover + cartwheel attempts. My big toe on my left foot is... kind of sad and oozy from the run two weeks ago and I think I am going to lose that toenail -- the whole of it is deep purple and the nail bed has like a blister. (Sorry, this is a very gross description, but at least I'm not including a photo. :PIt's the back foot for round-offs on beam and I am like 50% likely to land on it when I work on them, so I tabled them for another day, hoping that it recovers a bit more.

Ended with shoulder AND ankle PT. Went home a little bit early, ate dinner, showered, and slipped in bed right on time.

Sounds like your toe would benefit from soaking in hot water and Epsom salt. Hope it feels better soon!

Day 3.5

Lunch yoga turned out to be soooo good and very chill. I love casual yoga. Let's just relax, guys. I stayed late at work finishing up some work with a colleague who will be out until the new year. When that was done, I had to run some errands, craft my outfit for the Santapalooza mock meet, and then stopped by a gym friend's ugly sweater party for a few hours. I was very good and had 1 beer before swapping over to sparkling water. :P Much grown-up.

Day 3.6

Mock meet day~ I didn't sleep very well (maybe it was just too warm...? idk). I also mistimed my whole morning so I had barely any time to eat before dragging myself over to the gym. This turned out to not be ideal. My outfit came together great and I packed a pb&j in my bag for between main lifts. I, foolishly, didn't get just a regular photo of my outfit, but I was a christmas tree, as you will see in the videos below.

I saw your insta, give us some numbers! :D

Squats have not been feeling amazing and I haven't really lifted too much in the 90-95% range on them over the last couple of months. So while I was dreaming big about squat PRs, my body wasn't really ready for them. I misgrooved my second attempt and got stuck. Since it wasn't a real meet and I know I can lift 290, I went for 295. It actually went a LOT better than 290#, but like I said, my body just wasn't quite ready to take it.

Squat: 275, 290, 295

Bench was... bench. Whatever. It felt good that one week 2 weeks ago and has been back to being shitty, so I'm never really stressed about it. You just never know whether it's going to be a good day or a bad day. All of these felt way harder than they should have, but they went up, so let's call it an ok day.

Bench: 130, 135, 140

Video of 135:

Deadlifts, however, HAVE been feeling good. In a surprising twist of events. :P My one hip was being a little wonky while warming up, but wound up feeling okay on my actual reps.

Deadlifts: 290, 305, 320 (PR~!)

Deadlift old man face to get started, but it actually moved well! I think there's more in there.

We got barbecue delivered to the gym and picked up beer across the street and there were some more ensuing shenanigans like tandem deadlifts, beer pull-ups, beer curls, etc. I went home, showered, napped for a powerful hour, and then went to another party. This one ended pretty early, which was good because I was very tireeeeed.

Day 3.7

I went to... Sunday gymnastics practice. WHO AM I. I've probably been twice in the last 5 years. But, I was feeling a bit stiff from the meet and wanted to stretch out, plus I was sad to have missed Saturday morning practice with the team. I took it pretty slow warming up, but did ramp up to more front handspring + front pike + front tuck attempts with mixed success. I felt good about 1 of them and the rest were kind of trash, but that's okay. We're making progress... I also worked on balance beam, but no walkovers because my back was tired and sore, but I did throw on some round-offs on the high beams, which are going well. I started trying to fix my back leg in my split jumps and leaps on beam -- it tends to get lazy and loose. It was a productive practice for a Sunday.

After that, I went out for dinner and drinks for my friend's birthday and then we made it out to the club to see Jasmine Masters (of drag race and youtube fame). She probably didn't come on until 1:20 am. Got home a bit after 2:15 am. Fell very asleep.

In bed before 11p: 11/13

Square meals: 12/12 workday, 3/3 weekend

Pampering: 5/6 weighted PT exercises, 0/1 massage, 3/3 yoga, 0/1 self-gift

I'm tired but I'm here! I'm alive. :P We wound up with a 2 gymnastics, 2 lifting, 1 yoga count for the week. Lots of real food, but a little lacking on the sleep side. Those early bedtimes this week should get me back in fighting shape pretty quick though.

Haha, yep! I am being serious when I say my gift will probably be pairs of new glasses to replace the ones I lost last week, which doesn't sound that exciting, but I have a weird prescription so they're always pretty pricy.

tenor.gif?itemid=5386692

Day 4.1

Started off the week with a rest day. I worked a bit late again with a consultant who is helping us out on a couple of projects before the end of the year. Then, I went to do some shopping -- including picking up Nimona for my friend for his bday and a gift for my brother. I was STARVING when I got home and maybe ate a whole bunch of random shit, got very sleepy (my starving state was definitely partly because I was so tired), and took a nap. When I woke from that, I wrapped gifts, made real food, and showered. Then went to real bed!

So it was a rest day, but a productive one.

In bed before 11p: 12/17

Square meals: 12/16 workday, 3/4 weekend

Pampering: 5/8 weighted PT exercises, 0/1 massage, 3/4 yoga, 0/1 self-gift

Final week gameplan:

T - lift or gymnastics (I haven't decided)

W - pick up supplies for my annual chocolate bark holiday gift bags during lunch + lift after work + make and pack up chocolate bark

Th - glasses store for new glasses (my prescription is still good) + gymnastics

F - yoga at lunch + lift + gift exchange party

S - gymnastics practice + a possibly rescheduled ugly sweater party

S - friend in town for the holidays + bday celebration + maybe hot mess again (but I have an early flight on Monday soooo)

What a productive rest day! Is the peppermint bark making a closely guarded secret, or something you're willing to share? I have a feeling that may become a holiday tradition I borrow in the future.

Oh, I make a nut and fruit bark. Well, two, usually. One that is a dark chocolate base with dried cranberries, toasted almonds, and white chocolate drizzle and the other that is milk chocolate base with dried apricots, pistachios, and hazelnuts with dark chocolate drizzle.

It's easy. I just buy all of the above from Trader Joe's, temper my chocolate (or attempt to), toss with some fruit and nuts, spread it out in sheets, put more fruit and nuts on top, and then drizzle other chocolate on top. Let it chill/solidify, then break it up into shards, and pack it in cute baggies. Boom. Homemade treat bags for your colleagues, teammates, pals, and beloved bartenders/baristas, etc.

You could definitely do a peppermint one with a similar method.

Day 4.2

I decided on lifting over gymnastics, mostly because of the super busy Tuesday nights we've been having (and I've been complaining about) recently. Since I maxed out on Saturday, I had low expectations about what I would be capable of and just went to lift to get moving again and see how everything in my body is doing. Answer? Uhhh, not great, but we're okay.

1.5 squats: 4 x 5 x 195# (squat up to half-way back up, back down into the hole and up all the way) <-- these are hard

Paused bench: 4 x 5 x 115#

Lat raises: 5 x 10 x 15#

Kneeling band rotations: 5 x 15

Ab wheel: 5 x 8 (kneeling but trying to have really good form... trying being the operative word here)

3 straddle press handstands off a 1" block

Somehow this workout took like 2 hours. Got home, made dinner, prepped some egg + feta + collards bake for breakfast for the rest of the week, and read the TPB of the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina to figure out if I want to gift it to anyone or keep it for myself, haha. I haven't decided yet though. I got to bed on time (early, even)!

In bed before 11p: 13/17
