Day 4.3

Hello quads, I see you are upset with my squat-related life choices. I was in a bad mood, but I went to the gym anyway and slowly worked my way through this workout. There was a lot of sitting. And a lot of socializing. It got done though.

Deficit deadlifts: 4 x 5 x 225#

Half-kneeling one-armed kb press things: 4 x 12 x 25# per side

Chin-ups: 4 x 3

Single leg deadlifts: 4 x 12 x 65# kb

Some other thing I can't remember.

I got home, ordered buffalo chicken pizza, ate some of that, and then took another nap. Kept napping. Reluctantly got up and showered and started making my chocolate bark gifts before I noticed that the kilo of milk chocolate I picked up was milk chocolate with ALMONDS and not regular milk chocolate. Grumbling intensified. I wound up compromising with myself and agreeing to make up the dark chocolate bark and distribute out just that at work today, trade in the chocolate for regular milk chocolate, make up that other bark and use that one for the rest of the weekend. I also need more treat bags.

I am very distinctly NOT on top of my shit lately, and I had a pep talk to myself about how I'm the only person who expects me to do these things and it's really just a nice little treat/bonus for other people, not an obligation to anyone. And I felt a lot better but still want to do it. :P

In bed before 11p: 14/17 <-- so not actually, but I napped for 2 hours and then went to bed before 1 AM, so TECHNICALLY it was the same amount of sleep

Square meals: 15/16 workday, 3/4 weekend

Pampering: 7/8 weighted PT exercises, 0/1 massage, 3/4 yoga, 0/1 self-gift

I'll deal with the bark fiasco today and move going to pick out new glasses to tomorrow. I'm probably leaving early anyway because it's the Friday before our holiday week.

Blergh that's frustrating! But napping and pizza is a great evening.

Great pep talk. Gotta channel you when I get in a similar grumbly headspace.

Doing stuff like that because you want is way better than feeling like you have to.

I've had a good mental reframing for these kinds of things the last year or so.

I keep a very busy schedule and sometimes just feel overwhelmed by everything stretching before me -- both socially and on my workout schedule. Reminding myself that I am the one who chose to do these things helps remind me why I am doing them in the first place -- for my health/entertainment, to build and maintain friendships, to do something nice for someone, etc. It also helps me figure out which things I can quietly drop or adjust -- when no one knows I was PLANNING on making a cake, I can still arrive and bring a bottle or wine or cheese from the store (or sometimes with nothing at all) and everyone will be happy.

I am the one holding myself to the higher standard of achieving these things I set out for myself and sometimes I need to adjust that standard. :)

The bark really is such a nice thing you're doing! One of my coworkers gives out fudge every year and as someone on the receiving end of something like that I can say it is greatly appreciated - you're awesome!

Aw, thanks! I tried fudge one year and made a royal mess, so I've been sticking with bar for a few years now. I love those who can manage the tricky candies! I am pleased to say that I actually tempered my chocolate perfectly for both batches this year though. :D

Day 4.4

Trader Joe's didn't have any milk chocolate without almonds. Hahah. I went to swap the bars I bought, but the TJ's I went to the day before didn't have any milk. I got treat bags from Michaels and then went "what the hell, why not" and went to another TJ's downtown. Apparently it is a city-wide shortage because they didn't have any either! However, I did swap the almond bars for their regular 54% dark chocolate, which is at least slightly different from the 72% dark I used on the other batch and I think goes a bit better with the hazelnut/pistachio/apricot mix. Then I went to practice.

Oh my goddd, I was very whiny yesterday as practice started up. I get this kind of weird lower tailbone-area pain sometimes and it was rearing up while I was warming up cartwheels and the like, but it eventually died down or I stopped paying attention to it. SHOCKINGLY, I worked on the same things at practice that I have been working on the last 6 weeks. My front handspring + front pike + front tucks went better than Sunday. I landed two to my feet and didn't even bother using the 4" mat as a security blanket to start throwing them. That's definitely progress! I haven't had a day like the day a month...? ago where I was throwing them one after another and felt like I actually KNEW deep in my soul the right timing, but it's progress.

Round-offs on high beam also went well. I played with both front walkovers and the round-offs on a proper high beam with only 1 8" mat (similar to how we'd have it in competition). I'm nervous doing the round-offs toward the very end of the beam, but I'm starting to practice that specifically so I can work on trying to connect the two for my new series. Ended with some glute control/kick drills and went home.

Made the other bark, ate leftover pizza, showered and in bed at 11 ON THE DOT.

Hmm thanks for sharing that! It does really help to remind yourself you chose things.. and you can change your choice if you want, but then you realise you don't want and don't feel quite so bleh anymore. The reminder to consciously do that a bit more is very welcome, thank you.

Oh and happy holiday!

Hi team --

Sorry, I went MIA. Things got really hectic with traveling and then I got sick -- STREP?!?! WHAT! I blame airplanes.

Since last check-in, I've lifted twice, went to yoga, went to 1 gymnastics practice, and went to an hour-long open swim with my mom and her senior friends. :) I've walked a decent amount, but this last week has pretty much been a chill rest-ish week.

I did manage a good day of my double salto pass last Saturday, posted below on insta! So things are still going pretty good.

Challenge wrap-up

In bed before 11p: 15/17

Square meals: 16/16 workday, 4/4 weekend

Pampering: 7/8 weighted PT exercises, 0/1 massage, 4/4 yoga, 1/1 self-gift [new glasses]

Summary: A

I'm loving getting in bed earlier, have permanently added some shoulder health stuff into my lifting program, got back into the groove of making the time to enjoy the release of yoga once a week, and got my good meals on. Of course, that last point has totally going to shit while I've been traveling and also sick, but it's not hard for me to get back into when I'm home. It helps that I like chicken and rice and spinach for lunch. ;)

Next month might get hectic because I'll be looking for a new apartment and prepping to move hopefully by the start of February. I'll ruminate over what my goals should be to keep things always moving forward.
