KB Girl: snatches over 9000!

Recommended Posts

It's been almost a year since my last challenge, things have been busy and life just sort of happened. It's really time to make some focused effort into chasing some goals instead of just thinking about them x) I've been rereading all my favourite dragon ball fan fiction from 15 years ago, so I'm going with that theme even though I wouldn't re-watch the anime even if you paid me for it!

Short intro: I own a gym with my sort-of-husband, coach a kettlebell sport team, try to be a kettlebell lifter too.. I have a 2 year old daughter, a dog, a messy house and a desire to someday not suck at all this adulting stuff. Oh and I'm an avid fantasy reader, love magic the gathering and good food.

Goal 1: Duolingo! (bad days; 1 lesson. normal days; 3 lessons. good days; 5+ lessons)

My mom is half Turkish and I've always wanted to have some basic understanding in the language.

Goal 2: fast and light kettlebell snatches every damn day (bad days; at least some swings + OH hold. normal days; max set with 8 or 10. good days; also other cardio)

The reason I joined the scouts... my jerk is pretty good but the snatch ruins my biathlon score so I really need to work on it. I'm mostly lacking the necessary endurance, so here we go.

Goal 3: Be nice to next morning me. (bad days; clean kitchen counters before bed. normal days; kitchen + dinner table. good days; also the pans, floor etc)

Mornings can be really nice and relaxed, but they get hugely less so when you come downstairs to a huge mess and you have to clean before you can make breakfast and then you have a cranky hungry 2 year old.. yea..

Goal 4: Write something before sleeping. (bad days; something good about the day. normal days; also report here. good days; also write to do things for the next day)

Sometimes I get really sad/frustrated/etc, but life is really pretty good.. so instead of thinking about all the things that are not as I would like them to be, it might be good to think about all the good things some more.

(I really ship bulmaxvegeta if you couldn't tell)

I'm enthusiastic about being back here, I do keep thinking about everyone and missing this place.. but I'll keep it a little quiet and see if it works out this time.

If you thought you could hide in the scouts you're very much mistaken. ;)

I'm very glad to see you too!

Ranger though.... no no no! Jack of all trades is the opposite of what I am.. I'm extremely specialised :D

Ok so far not too bad.

1. Duolingo, did this all 3 days. The challenge helps me get started on it but once I've started I'll usually keep going for a couple of lessons because it's actually quite fun.

2. Cardio... Thursday I did two sets of 3:00 snatches with 12kg, also did a longer set with doubles.. Friday was a bust, tough day. Then Saturday (today) I did a 10:00 set with 8kg at a really fast pace, managed 220 reps which is a PR for me so yay.

3. Adulting before bed; Thursday was hard because I was home late from work and the house was a mess. I cleared the kitchen counters but didn't wash all the pans and wasn't able to put everything in the dishwasher because it hadn't run that day... but I did also clear up the dinner table, so not all bad. Friday the kitchen was spotless before bed. Today we'll see, but I'm pretty sure I'll be a good girl.

4. Writing/reflecting. Sooo.. nope! On Thursday I did make a short to do list for the next day, which actually did help calm me down to sleep so it's a good goal to have. Today however I am reporting here! And I'll write something good about the day too.. Let's see.... not in a good mood so that makes me see something negative in all the good things too.. hm, my sister had a baby 3 weeks ago and I've been sick and had a lingering cold so today was the first day I actually got to hold him. It's quite special being an aunt. And those 3 weeks waiting did suck, but I got to hold him today. And he's got a lot of hair and he has a face like a tiny old man. And he smelled nice and was very content in my arms and cried when his dad took him away. So yay.

Today (Sunday) I did pretty good.

Duolingo three lessons, I can now tell everyone that I'm eating an egg, or multiple eggs. Or that someone else is eating an egg! It's a cool word, eggs. YUMURTALER.

There were no snatches, because my hands felt sore.. but I did do all my jerk sets so there were plenty of kettlebells overhead. Then instead of doing assistance work I spend 15 minutes scrolling through my Instagram feed.. which isn't an ideal situation- but I did realise that despite usually feeling like I'm getting nowhere I've made pretty huge progress this year on jerks at least. I've gained about 5 reps on 16kg snatch (god I suck at it) but I went from 69 jerks with 2x16 in may to 104 jerks with 2x16 in november. That's huge! Ofcourse they're beginner gains (I switched this year from longcycle to jerk/snatch aka biathlon) but still.. pretty huge.

Then I did more cardio, took the dog for a short run, with intervals decided by what needed to be sniffed.

Adulting.. I already cleaned the kitchen and I might actually do some more before I go to bed in half an hour.

Writing/reflecting; I reported here, so that's good. Now something good about the day/life.. We had breakfast at my moms this morning and then we had dinner with my brother and sisters, I'm really grateful we all get along so well and live so close to each other.

Sounds like you are doing great!  I have had making sure the kitchen is clean before as a goal for one of my previous challenges for the same exact reason, to make better mornings.

Cheese is "peynir".. which makes "yumurtaler ve peynir" (eggs and cheese)

And yea I'm definitely happy with the gains! I'm learning a lot too, about double kettlebell lifts (I used to only lift one arm because women weren't allowed to lift doubles before)

Reporting on Monday, Tuesday + Wednesday.

1. I visited my best friend (who lives 2 hour drive away) on Tuesday and spend the night, I didn't want to do Duolingo while I could spend time with her. I should have done it in the morning, but I didn't. Mon+wed was good though, still find it somewhat enjoyable.

2. Monday I did a great snatch set, I grabbed a 10kg and just went at 18rpm and didn't look at the clock. When I had to put the bell down due to loss of grip it turned out that 8:00 had passed. Really quite pleased with that! Unfortunately due to lack of planning nothing happened on Tuesday and on Wednesday I had a big mean migraine after driving home and making sure the 2 year old was entertained, fed and put into bed was all I could manage.

3. On Monday I fell asleep while waiting for Emma to fall asleep, yes the irony.. I woke up around midnight and just changed clothes and slept on. So no before bed cleaning. But on Tuesday and Wednesday I really did a lot. It's like a domino effect, I do something and then think oh I could also do that and before I know it, lots got done. Feels great. It's the honeymoon phase but ohh how I wish this will last.

4. Ok so I'm reporting here now and I've got some good things to say about life too. I'm super grateful for my best friend, even if we sometimes can't meet up for 2-3 months it's all good when we do meet.. and she has a daughter Emma's age, which is awesome. Emma doesn't normally play with kids her own age, so it was really nice to see them play together. I think it is because most kids we know don't talk much or at least not understandably and she does, so they can really go "you do this, come check this out, here you go, can I have that" etc.

it was nice. And terribly cute.

I don't understand why it should be so hard to make it stick! At least for me the reverse domino effect is equally true, one tiny little "oh it can wait until tomorrow" and the next thing I know my flat is a disaster zone.

Unfortunately, yes, exactly. Though, (trying to look on the bright side here) I do think I usually don't let it slide quite as far as I used to. Might have something to do with the fact that it's harder to climb out of such a mess with Emma around.

Aww, sorry your bestie lives far away, but it's awesome you guys got to hang out and your kids like to hang out too! What a win-win. :)

Yea, I can't complain too much really, some peoples best friends require a plain ride to visit. But I really do wish that she lived "lets have a cup of tea" distance away.

yea...

basically KB sport is like going back in time 80 or so years when it comes to emancipation. The international federation is mostly governed by former Soviet Union countries, which means stuffy old dudes who believe women belong in the kitchen make the decisions. Only since 2001 are women allowed to compete at all, and then they thought if they did anything other than one arm moves their boobs would be damaged and their uteruses would fall out. (really, there was actually a document published about this)

So this has been slowly changing.. and some people fed up with dealing with people who live 80 years in the past founded their own international federation where they allowed women to just do everything.. but that's not all good either, because men only have 2 disciplines and now women have 4. I think equality works both ways you know? So I'm working as my countries representative to get them to change that, at the European championship last november we had a voting meeting and I suggested we add a discipline for men and announce the removal of one for women in 2020, so we'll all have the same 3 disciplines.. there was a HUGE argument about it, but we voted and it passed :) so I'm proud of that.. but very much crossing fingers right now that men will actually go lift in the discipline in 2019, hehe.

Anyway, that's why I dropped one arm longcycle (even though I'm good at it) because men don't/won't have it. Act as you believe right? Though it pained me that with the scores at the European championships I could have been on the platform in the professional level x(

The clean kitchen habit stuck for the most part until this school year.  My kids went from having a 9:00 bus pick up and 9:30 drop off for the preschooler to bus pick ups between 6:05 and 7:40 so I need to get to bed earlier and will sometimes procastinate those everyday chores to the morning.

Sounds like you are doing a great job at your quest of helping to grow the sport.

Thank you! I can always see what I could do better and tend to focus on that, but I'm really trying to acknowledge the things I did do.

Thursday, Friday and Saturday...

1. Duolingo- did 5+ every day and I actually spoke a sentence at my mom's dinner table this evening, like a boss.

2. I am amazed with myself. And incredibly sore in the bum area. I did 3:15/3:00 (R/L) snatch with 12kg on Thursday ánd went for a bike ride (to get chocolate on the other side of town, but still). Then on Friday I went for a run + did some bodyweight stuff and my 'rehab' stuff. And on Saturday I joined the 'body control' class we have in the morning (inverted hang in rings, some tumbling, crow to headstance and cartwheels) THEN I did a jerk ladder and lifted 2x24kg for the first time (only 2 reps, but still) and THEN I finished all that up by ALMOST nailing a 12:00 snatch set with the 8kg, it was 6:00/5:40. And I know what you're thinking.. "why not those last 20 seconds?!?!" and I knoooow, but I felt my skin almost ripping and I didn't want that. Still a big PR, so there.

3. Scraping by on the bare minimum for being an adult in the evenings, but it's more than I did before the challenge so I'll take it. I'm really on top of my laundry though, so I'm deciding to feel like a good adult despite my hairy floor and dirty toilet.

4. Look at me being all positive, isn't that something good for the day? But I also wrote down stuff in my journal.. Jaap made me lasagna because I was craving it, isn't that sweet? Also I appreciate our interns who are really improving. Oh and Emma did her first "why? why? why? why? why?" which was hilarious.

Sunday we had an early Christmas celebration with my father's family. It was nice. I made a no-dairy oatmeal and fruit cake for dessert which was well received :) I managed to get in a quick training before we had to go (10:00 snatch with 10kg, 200+ reps, which was a nice PR) but I didn't clean up the mess I made while baking. Came home very tired and did not want to clean up even a little bit of that mess. That spiralled into not taking my end of day notes, and not doing duolingo.

Throwing the baby out with the bathwater, when Jaap took Emma to my moms I went back to bed instead of getting to work.. and then when I woke up I procrastinated for 2 hours before actually, you know, getting dressed. So that spiralled out of control quickly. I did end up getting my shit together before Emma came home, but lost the opportunity to train.

Tuesday my head was still messy but it was actually a pretty good day. Head prevented me from training though, kept coming up with reasons not to, which mostly centred around "your training won't be perfect so why even bother" which is the thought I struggle with most. Work got done though. Housework got done.

Wednesday was MUCH better, it's my no-work day which is nice. Lots of time with Emma, who is currently obsessed by all things firemen related. I hadn't trained for 2 days so I was determined to get something done and just brought her to the gym with me. We played, we crawled, we hung in the rings.. I did squats, ring rows, top position holds and someone distracted her for a bit so I could do a 10:00 snatch set with 8kg. Not bad.
