Join the Holiday Watch and Save the Rebellion: Holiday Break 2018 mini-challenge

Recommended Posts

oh, good timing.

Fitness: Take a walk every day, unless it's pouring rain.  If it's pouring, 10 mins of calisthenics and stretching.

Nutrition: Frequent intake of soup, veggies and tea.  This will decrease the volume allotted to treats and ensure adequate hydration.

Lifestyle: already set goals with my shrink. For bonus points, also try my new meditation app at least 3 times

Nutrition Goal

Apply Intuitive Eating principles and attitude to all holiday meals and special holiday treats (like the many cookies in my house), by practicing Mindful Eating at every meal. Do not allow myself to feel guilty about eating any of the really tasty stuff (like the many cookies in my house). Do not allow myself to eat more or less of something, just because of the expectations of others.

This is so sensible. If I try not to eat the delicious things I'll starve and be miserable. But I can definitely put my fork down in between bites and stay present. That's small enough to manage.

Oops, no socialising or discussion. So here is my mini challenge:

Food: Eat mindfully and don't freak out about bad nutrition; Christmas, restaurants and travel will be over soon.

Fitness: Lift every other day when possible, don't freak out when not possible. Christmas and travel will be over soon.

Lifestyle: Take time off from socialising when necessary instead of waiting until I freak out.

Trying to plan a little bit for the physical part of the challenge by looking up gym hours. They are closed on Christmas Day, as expected, but are open for non-class workouts on the 24th, closing mid-afternoon. So that is my little mini-challenge inside this mini-challenge: Go to the gym on Christmas Eve! I will play with barbells. :)

Just returned from the gym. Much progress has been lost, but that's a minor inconvenience that patience and hard work will make up for. It felt good to be back! :)

Fitness Goal

Pleasure walkin! I love hiking and walking, but in the winter this habit gets buried under the snow. Yesterday I got in a ruck to town with Mr Red and it felt glorious. I will be working this week and then spending a long NYE weekend in the mountains with my family. 2 pleasure walks minimum!

Nutrition Goal

Enjoy the things I like, don't eat things I don't enjoy just to appease the crowds.

Lifestyle Goal

Make room for personal time while on holiday with the family. Play music, read, be alone. Be okay with being alone.

Today my youngest princesses wanted my wife and me to open our Christmas gifts from them early. Princess Gracelynn, who is 8, got me a set of push-up bars. Princess Arabella (6) got me a pair of black sleep pants, but she said, "You can wear those when you go running or when you exercise, Daddy."

It's like they know me well.

I'm in! Just finished my first four week challenge, and am excited to keep the momentum going. Last time I kept it very concrete and manageable, and it really helped me keep it up all four week.s

Fitness Goal: For my last challenge I chose to get up and move three times per week. For the next two weeks I'll keep that goal and add that one of those sessions must be at the gym. I just joined, and am excited but also very scared.

Nutrition Goal: I'm going home for Christmas, and can eat what I want when I'm with family. But the other days will be business as usual. Last challenge I kept to a limit of two sugary drinks per week. I wasn't even thinking about alcohol consumption, and will deal with that next round. This time I'll keep that limit but exclude alcohol and will start logging my sugar intake. Logging all of my food would be great too, but for now we're just going to focus on my weakness so I know how much to cut back next round.

Lifestyle Goal: Reflect on the year. Set goals. And declutter.

So far:

Mo: 2x finger trainer, 2x stretched, 5k run, was ok (for christmas eve), read "Creepers"

Tu: 2x finger trainer, 2x stretched, went to the cinema and had ONLY NACHOS!!!, read "The brain - the missing manual"

We: 2x finger trainer, 2x stretched, went good the whole day and worse in the evening, but still okay-ish, finished "The brain - the missing manual"

Th: 1x finger trainer, 1x stretched, was ok, a chapter of "Angel of Death"

Fr: 1x finger trainer, 1x stretched, bodyweight workout, went good until night, then too much sweets, more chapters of "Angel of Death"

Sa: 1x finger trainer, 1x stretched, too much sweets, more chapters of "Angel of Death"

This is a great idea! I'm in.

Fitness Goal:  50 squats and crunches every day.

Nutrition Goal:  I definitely gave myself a pass for the holiday, and now it's just back to three healthy meals and a cookie with my afternoon coffee.

Lifestyle Goal:  This is the perfect time to catch up on some reading. I got some cool books for Christmas, so I'm going to finish the day with a book.

Absolutely no workout-type activity happened on the 25th. Even though I partly expected that, it's still a partial non-victory. I will talk Happy Sidekick for  along walk later today instead.

I have been meditating every day and survived two full days of family events with my sanity intact. Also big personal victory: Stopped eating both cookies and prime rib when I felt full. :)

Fitness Goal: From tomorrow (12/27) to my last day of vacation (1/1), I'm going to be physical every day. Options include 9Round, regular gym, dance fitness videos on Youtube, going for a 30+ minute walk, or body weight exercises.

Nutrition Goal: Going back to Daily Nooming. I have NOT been keeping up the last few days...

Lifestyle Goal: Declutter 10 items a day between now and 1/1. That's 60 items! It'll feel so good to get rid of stuff.

Okay Since my Christmas is done with now (I'm working over New Year) lets tally this up.

Fitness Goal.

I ran. I did it on the 25th rather than the 24th but the run got done. I left pre-dawn on Christmas morning and got in a good 8 mile run in a small woodland park in Wales. The ground was very wet and boggy so the parts that were in the woodland were incredibly slow but I'm very pleased that it was done.

On the 26th I got hope, I ate and I went to the gym. Job done.

Nutrition Goal:

23rd food was good.

24th food was not out of control

I was back on plan by yesterday. I'm very happy with how this turned out. I did eat all the things on Christmas day but I regret nothing.

Lifestyle Goal:

Read. I did read I got through about half of my book over the 3 days. All good :)

So I am happy with the success of my mini challenge!

Fitness Goal:  Aim for 4 workouts/week, accept a minimum of 3. When the gym is open, Nia Shanks 3x3 workout as scheduled. When gym is closed, bodyweight or home-equipment workout that comprises push, pull, legs, and HIIT finisher.

Nutrition Goal:  It's the most chocolate-y time of the year, and I'm trying to take it a little easy on myself, so I'm limiting this to "eat at least a serving of vegetables every day."

Lifestyle Goal:  Headspace meditation, 10 min/day.

Meh - I went to the gym on Wednesday, did not go on Monday or today. I'm at home now, did 5 sets of 20 kettlebell swings + 10 pushups to assuage my guilt.

No veggies on Christmas Eve, but I've managed something every day since then. Got smart yesterday and made up some crudite bowls for quick snackies. I don't like veggies, but I can make myself do it if it's easy.

Headspace is generally an easy win for me, in fact today I got my streak back up to 100 days (previous almost-a-year streak broken by Hurricane Florence)

So, I didn't freak out about food, socialising, or not being able to go to the gym. I lifted when possible, straight up told my family when I needed some quiet time, and, um, totally failed to eat mindfully. So, there were some small wins.

Nutrition Goal:  Enjoy all the seasonal tasty things. Eat until I feel sick on the 24th and on the 31st. Allow myself to eat. Be kind to myself in my thoughts.

OK, I'm in. Although as usual I'm unlikely to post very regularly.

Fitness Goal: My gym is closed until after the first of the year, so my usual workout before work won't be happening. I"ll go for a long walk every day that I'm not working, and take advantage of the extra days off to do 2 extra PT sessions (one on Christmas, one on New Year's Day), 3 per week instead of my usual 2.

Nutrition Goal: I haven't been keeping up with my tracking, and it does make me more aware of what I'm eating. I'll enter my food in the LoseIt app by the end of every day.

Lifestyle Goal: I've really been struggling with my meditation goal, even though life is pretty stressful and I probably need it now more than ever.  Now while there's less time pressure will be a good time to work on rebuilding the habit. I will meditate 10 minutes every day with the Calm app.

I'm pleased with how the first week of this went.

Fitness Goal: Done. 3/3 planned PT sessions and 5/5 planned long walks in the woods.

Nutrition Goal: I logged the same day 5/7 days, and caught up on the other 2 days the next morning

Lifestyle Goal: I used the Calm app 5/7 days. I didn't use it Christmas Eve, but late-night Christmas Eve service is pretty meditative. The only other night I missed was last night, when I got caught up in the book I was reading and lost track of bedtime.

Taking a few days off from the gym, because of New Year's freaks. I figure it will all be normal again by Thursday.

I put up some boundaries with another toxic person. It was weird at first, and then it was Totally Fine. I'm glad I did it. (There will certainly be rough spots in the future as this becomes real for the other person, so pray for him.)

I'm doing pretty well with eating. Yay me!!

Resting a writing are excellent. Submitted two different papers for consideration to present at a conference in March. Submitted one application for a doctoral program and a second one is in process. Full ride + stipend at each one.

Had a brainstorm and am looking for a magazine / agent to pitch a women's empowerment travelogue piece to.

I have reading and knitting in process.

There is a writers conference at the end of the month.

Good things come to those who wait.

Interesting! What did you cook? Got any photos as well?

I made a rotisserie chicken, a chicken and shrimp Paella inspired rice dishTM, some steak & tomato bruschetta, a seafood cocktail salad, some candied bacon wrapped cheese & walnut stuffed jujubees, some candied yams, and a pumpkin pie.
