jstanlick attempts to heal and carry on

2019 was to be a year of crushing all the things. Unfortunately, I need to heal up my ribs before I can do more. So, this challenge is going to be about trying to keep exercising whilst not overdoing it so I can heal. Additionally, I will need to play closer attention to diet and stress relief as I won't have my usual crutch as it were of HIIT and running for a while. Bah! Tis no fun!

So, here's the plan for the first challenge of 2019:

  1. Walk on a regular basis. Without the running and HIIT, I need some amount of exercise. The dog will be my friend with these. At least 5 walks per week.
  2. Determine what exercise I can do with this rib injury and do it. At least 3 times a week.
  3. Control the carbs. Not as much margin for error while everything heals. I really need to be strict about keeping my net carbs under 70g per day.
  4. Silent time. I did pretty good with this the last challenge. I need to keep it up. 10 minutes a day all to myself for prayer, reflection, meditation, etc.
  5. Secret goal. I'm going to work on a project I've been thinking of for a while. It's time to do it. I will hopefully have it ready for unveiling by the end of the challenge.

There you have it. That's how I'm starting out 2019. Getting healthier and setting up for a winning year.

I still don't quite know how I did it. I turned around and started to turn back and it felt like Ivan Drago had just taken a clean shot at my rib cage.

Thanks for the well wishes everyone. Things are slowly getting better. I was able to sleep in my bed last night instead of the recliner. Granted, every time I rolled over I woke up from some angry ribs, but I could actually lay down on them with minimal pain. So, that's progress.

TUESDAY MORNING, ZERO WEEK

Just finished my second walk in 2 days. Yesterday was good with the nutrition (67g net carbs) and I had almost an hour of quiet time. So far so good from a standpoint of goals.

I did attempt to jog a few steps with the dog this morning. Each step hurts, but it’s not as intolerable as it was 2 days ago. So, more progress. I wonder how long it will take to get to a point where the pain isn’t bad enough that I can just ignore it for a run. Plan is some body weight exercises later today. We’ll see how it goes.

HAPPY NEW YEARS EVERYONE!!!

Sorry to hear about your ribs; injury is so frustrating when you just want to DO THE THINGS! I hope your recovery goes smoothly and that you're able to progress at a good pace!!!

It is frustrating. But, things are actually getting better faster than I anticipated. I just hope I don’t do something stupid and set myself back as I have a history of overdoing things.

ZERO WEEK, DAY 4 UPDATE

Today was the first day I didn't take the dog for a walk. I spent 20 minutes on an exercise bike instead. That's after trying a Crossfit WOD that I thought had exercises I could do. I also went slowly and scaled it to a beginner version with lower weights. Felt okay for the most part doing it, but now I'm sitting on the couch with an ice pack on my side. Might have been too much :P

Nutrition has been really good and I've made time for myself as well. So far this challenge is going fairly well. Hopefully it keeps going that way.

Oh man, hows your side??

Still sore. Definitely overdid it. But, overdoing it is kind of my thing so I shouldn't be surprised.

Glad the challenge has started well!

Me too! Although the overdoing it is leading me to wonder if I can actually complete Goal #2. "Determine what exercise I can do with this rib injury and do it. At least 3 times a week." But, we'll see.

Also, those of you that remember my last challenge, there was an award at the end of it if I achieved my goals. This guy is out for delivery today:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B079Y6R6HP

So, it should be waiting for me when I get home.

I went with a certified refurb model and got an additional 3 year warranty for it. Like I said before, I'm a cheapskate, and the refurb plus the warranty was $60 less than a new one with no warranty. If I really like it and get lots of use out of it, whenever it dies I might spend more money. But, after talking to many folks (including you guys) this one seemed to best fit my requirements of the heart rate monitor, the GPS and syncing to apps. Plus, a few critic reviews of the devices in the space had the GPS on the Garmin ranked as more accurate than other similarly priced devices. It even has some nice to haves like waterproof for swimming, rep counting for lifting, timer for indoor cardio stuffs and notifications from my phone.

The downside is that I ordered it before the rib injury and now I'll have to wait to try out the GPS on a run. But, we'll see how this thing works.

This is becoming the challenge of "see how well this works".

That tracker is very intriguing. My Fitbit separated from its band and is out of warranty so they won't replace it. A refurb like that might be a better option. I'm also intrigued by the rep counts feature; awaiting more details once you get yours set up!

So far so good. Setup was easy. I like the sleep tracking and heart rate monitor. GPS has only been used for walking (stupid rib cage) but has been very accurate. I gotta admit, I didn’t see the point in linking notifications to my phone, but it is much more handy than I thought. So far so good.

If if I had any complaints, it seems to take longer for it to find a GPS signal than my phone does. I kind of have to wait 10-20 seconds before it says it’s ready to start tracking an activity. I can live with that.

ZERO WEEK IN REVIEW

Quick run down of goal attainment...

1) Walk at least 5 days a week. There was only 1 day this week that I did not go for a walk. ACHIEVED!

2) Determine what exercise I can do and do it 3x/ week. I’m still working on the figuring out part. Let’s see, I did some body weight work one day, shoveled snow another day, tried a CrossFit WOD slowly with low weight and cleaned up all the Christmas lights and decorations from the yard and the house. After the Christmas decorations I got to clean up partially digested food from 2 of the kiddos stomachs. That night my ribs were so ridiculously sore. Worse than when I first injured it. So, I guess I didn’t try, I did not. Shoveling was also pain inducing. Body weight exercises were okay depending on the exercise. The WOD was surprisingly the least pain inducing one. Although, I think the pull-ups in the body weight exercises ruined the whole thing. Goal achieved? Sure why not.

3) Control the carbs. With the exception of 1 day, this was achieved. And in many cases with lots of room to spare. Achieved!

4) Me time. 7 days of setting aside time for myself even if it was only 10 minutes here and there. Achieved.

5) Secret goal. Had a bit of a setback with this one, but I think it’s still doable. Not achieved.

4 outta 5 ain’t too shabby.
