In China, water is also served at 3 possible temperatures: room temperature, warm, just boiled.

Cold drink are uncommon because according to Traditional Chinese Medicine, cold drinks are really bad for your belly.

Yeah, my brother explained us the whole thing last time we visited. Curious theory.

And finally to bring this challenge full circle, here is a picture of a notice in the elevator lobby reminding people not to urinate or dedicate just wherever

It all ends where it began :D

The battle must be fought anew every day

Lots of Spain still believes that cold drinks will make you sick. Which is difficult to deal with, because parts of Spain are even hotter than Texas.

Huh, I thought this was a uniquely Chinese concept.

To be honest, I was perplexed at Tanktimus comment, since everybody here drinks cold drinks without trouble even in the hardest winter. If you don't ask for room temperature water at a bar or restaurant, they will always assume you want it cold. And of course, all types of sodas (even if they were in the fridge) and alcoholic drinks are served with ice, beer comes straight from the fridge.

In fact, we had that conversation about cold/warm drinks at chinese tradition with my brother, because as almost everyone, my boyfriend drinks cold beverages in winter, and ices his water in summer, and my brother explained why that was wrong from the chinese medicine perspective.

To be fair, the cold drinks thing was more prominent in Vitoria, and more common with older folks. Ie also ran into this in Madrid, in SUMMER of all times. That was at the same trip where I was in Vitoria. For those not familiar, Madrid in Summer is like Phoenix or Vegas. Even there, old ladies thought we were crazy when we wanted ice with our drinks. Now that I think about it, that trip was 18 years ago. When we were in Barcelona and Seville two years ago we got served a lot of cold drinks. So I think it fair to amend my comment to say "I ran into this in the Pyrenees region of Spain and in Madrid at the turn of the Millennium."
