Anim: Year of the Dinosaur

A couple months ago I tried jumping back into my old habits and failed miserably.  So I spent the rest of 2018 figuring out why and coming up with a new plan.

And just FYI, the title doesn't really mean anything.  I just like dinosaurs, so that's the calendar I got to track my progress:

IMG_20181231_134438877

Goal for the year is to build new healthy habits, so I can do the things I want to do without worrying about ability or injury.

Goals for January:

-Start PLP365 - This is my own take on the PLP Program.  On each day of 2019, I want to do reps of pullups/lunges/pushups equal to the month plus the day.  So I start out easy with 2 (1+1) on Jan 1st, then 3 on the 2nd, and so on.  After doing 32 reps on jan 31st, I get to deload back to 3 reps (2+1) on Feb 1st and start rebuilding.

-Run/walk twice a week - I'm going to limit my other exercises until I'm confident I won't hurt myself adding to the PLP.  But my endurance is terrible right now, so I want to start rebuilding that.

-Mindful eating - I'm not ready to jump back into calorie counting (because I hate it), but I need to start eating better.  The goal is to only eat when I'm actually hungry and limit junkfood when I do eat.  I'm also going to track my weight and waist weekly and if I'm not making progress by the end of Feb, I'll start calorie counting again.

-Projects - My current major projects are 3 new costumes for Pensacon (end of February) and finishing the insulation in my attic while its still cool enough to do so.  So that's 4 projects in 2 months.  I'll be working on other projects too, but those are the focus.

-NF stuff - I feel like I've been slacking a lot around here, so one of my goals is to be better about managing the minis and posting in the Den.  Lack of participation the past few months has been discouraging, but that's at least partly my fault since I kept reusing minis instead of creating something new and interesting.  So I need to plan better and incorporate feedback to keep people engaged, instead of just assuming that a new fandom on the old formula will solve the problem.

Also, for the 3 people who actually read my thread :playful:, how do you feel about the term "sidequest" instead of "mini-challenge?"  I think it's confusing to have a main challenge/quest, with monthly challenges to support it, and a mini-challenge that lasts a random amount of time and may or may not be related to the main quest.  Sidequest ties into the "gamifying" theme better and more accurately describes them as "optional activities to expand your perspective, that may or may not tie directly to you main quest/challenge."  Thoughts?  Counterpoints?

Have you looked into intuitive eating?

I think it's a great idea to use sidequest instead of mini-challenge. It can also be a bit of Assassin uniqueness if you are the only one who calls them sidequests. On the other hand, if other guilds use the term, you can go hipster and rightfully state that you did so before it was cool.

I really enjoyed the Summer Mini, it made me work on my legs more and started new habits. It was my first mini and I thought it was brilliant. I'm not entirely sure participation is entirely dependent on the mini formula. The Assassin Guild  is small, I mean there is cross-over with people from other guilds joining in for minis but it's still a factor.

Seconding what @@mu said, we're a small guild, and holiday season is often hectic. That said, your work on the minis is highly appreciated, thank you for doing them.

I like the idea of side-quests, for the reasons you mentioned and because it tweaks the urgency vs fun expectations going into it. If you make them escort quests, though, please fix the walk/ run speed of the NPC. :)

Final note on the walk/ run/ endurance quest - how does that tie in to your main goal? I do "cardio" twice a week vs weights 3 times, because I understand the importance of cardiovascular health, but my main goal is lifting weights and getting stronger. My run speed has never been high, and my progress slow, but that's ok. I feel like a lot of people suffer from the "shoulds" and default to walking and running as a default. Not saying that's the case here, just curious how it ties into the end goal.

Guild size is definitely a factor.  The entire forum has shrunk a lot in the past few years as NF has switched focus to the paid classes/programs.  But when participation goes from 20-30 to 2-4 over ~3months, I have to think it's something in the mini design itself.  So instead of using the same (easy) formula for every mini Sidequest this year, I'll be drawing more from the minis that people keep referencing as favorites.  And focusing more on spreadsheet design and automation to reduce the workload maintaining them, so I can spend my time on the story.  That's not to say there won't be some generic sidequests, but I'm trying to make them more strategic, so it's a relaxing change instead of a monotonous repeat.

Not saying that's the case here, just curious how it ties into the end goal.

So I divide running into 3 ranges:

-"Take cover!"  IE some emergency just happened/is happening and I need to get to the closest safe spot ASAP.  Personally, I train(ed) 100m sprints, as any further than that is impractical in a real world scenario.

-"A car would be inconvenient."  Sometimes its just easier to walk than to navigate all the weird roads and parking lots.  As this is for non-emergency scenarios, I'm less concerned with speed, but from experience I know I should be able to maintain an 8-10min mile pace for ~3miles, so that's my goal.  Plus it lets me skip the rental car on some vacations, since I know I can just wander around all day without worry.  Plus bad knees run in my family, so running regularly enforces good foot strike technique and keeps mine from degrading.

-"Why?  Just why?"  I know people who love running and do tris, marathons, and ultra-marathons for fun.  But I'm not one of those people.  If driving is more convenient, I'm going to do that.  And if it's an emergency, I'll either figure out how to steal a car.

I much prefer strength training and skill training, and plan to get back into that once I'm comfortable with my PLP progress.  But I also need to build endurance and running specifically helps with my known physical weaknesses.

The one that I liked the best was the Munchkin one that was done when I just joined NF.  I didn't get to join that one, but I followed along and would totally do another one like that.

Also, I am indifferent as to whether it is called a mini challenge or a side-quest.  My biggest determinant for participation is how well the activities match/compliment my regularly scheduled challenge activities.

/poke. How's the challenge going?

I keep meaning to update here instead of just tracking the sidequest, but keep forgetting to take pictures of stuff.

I haven't missed a day of PLP yet and have gotten my 2 runs each week.  Eating is going less well.  It's been difficult finding the energy to cook consistently with the increase in workouts, so I've been snacking more than I know I should, mostly the random candy my GF likes to keep around the house.  And because I'm tired, I haven't been able to get reliable measurements to see if I'm making any progress (unlikely).  I'm going to try getting my sleep schedule back in order, but that'll probably end up being a goal for next challenge, since we're visiting my family at the beginning of Feb and that always throws me off more.

Costumes are going well also.  For Pensacon, we're doing Planeteers (Captain Planet), anthro-pokemon, and hobby fairies.  I finished my Wheeler yesterday, since it was just a matter of finding all the pieces.  I also have everything for my Charizard (doing orange slacks and shirt with a yellow vest), so I just need to make the wings and tail and decide if I have time to add his horns to the fedora.  Originally, I was going to do a "bad idea fairy," but couldn't come up with a good way to portray giving out bad ideas instead of being the guy acting on them.  So I've switched to a prop/costuming fairy, which goes better with the GF's halloween/makeup fairy and the friend's sewing fairy.  Still working to flesh out the concept, so I'll start on that one when I finish Charizard.

I spent an afternoon or two cleaning my garage so I can get back into the attic, but still need to finish that and put up my Xmas decorations before I can really work on the insulation.  Hoping to get that done this week, so I can spend the holiday next week in the attic while the GF's at work.  I may have to spend that time buying/installing a new dishwasher though, since I'm really tired of washing them by hand. :playful:

That jogged my memory and I could remember what Wheelers looked like but I just couldn't remember what movie they were from.  Ended up having to google it... :D

Hat for my anthro-charizard.  I also finished the tail, and just need to make straps for the wings and decide how I want them to work with the vest.

(Almost) finished anthro-Charizard costume.  Just need to hem the pants and wash the clothes.

The wings are made from a single piece of of medium gauge wire with pool noodle foam to add dimension to the "arms."  I made the harness separate, and cut a slit in the back of the vest so the straps shouldn't show.  The tail is a "robotic" one I found on etsy with EL wire wrapped around some clear thermoplastic to make the flame.  Pants, shirt, and vest are all from Amazon.

And since this is probably my last update for the challenge:  Waist measurement yoyoed back down to where I started the year, so definitely have to take a harder look at my diet next challenge.  PLP was working well until this week, then I realized I'm no longer in good enough shape to do 25+reps daily.  So I'm currently taking a break and will probably retry the Start Bodyweight program next challenge.  I've got my last run for the week planned for this afternoon, so I'll have one goal I actually met. :playful:

The GF and I are flying out tomorrow morning to do a late Xmas with my family.  She's met my parents once, but this will be the first time with my sibling and niece and nephew, so we'll see how things go.
