Moros Reboots Like a Ranger

Moros

Happy New Year Everyone!

So, I'm finally back, and glad to be here.  I am ready to reboot like a ranger:

Dunedain.jpg

Ms. Moros is back to normal, and I can reboot my workout program.  For a while, her situation was like this:

092116_IronDeficiencyAnemia-01.png

Now, she's better, and I have been rebuilding quietly.  Now, I am ready to get back into it.

My goals are pretty simple:

1. Continue with my sleep and morning exercise goals

2. Create a healthy way to wind down in the evening, and better prepare for the morning

3. Focus on food - the 80% of the battle:

Details are below the fold.  I still need to add an appropriate award, but I need to think about that for a bit.  Maybe some new NF gear?

2019 Fitness Goals - Last Updated 2019.01.02

1. Complete the Nerd Fitness Academy quests by December 31st, 2019.
2. Be able to do 50 bodyweight pushups by October 29th, 2019.

Intentions that need to be converted into goals:

1. I am the type of person who eats healthy every day.
2. I eat celebration meals without guilt or shame.
3. Use "The Better Brain Solution" by Steven Masley as well as NF food
   recommendations to improve my diet

Use Strategy Goals, wherever possible, from SuperBetter:

"...Instead of focusing on a specific outcome (as with a difficult goal)
or a general effort level (as with a do-your-best goal), you put your
attention on learning and improving concrete skills and strategies that
will help you do better in the future...

"...When you adopt a strategy goal, you can be successful regardless of whether
you win the race or even finish it; and regardless of whether you’re 100 percent
debt-free in a year or just well on your way. You’re successful as long as
you’re learning and improving..."
---------------------------------------------------------------------
About (redacted):

Like a lot of NF people, I struggle with stuff besides physical fitness.
I generally don't bring it up in this forum for a couple of reasons:

    1. Because of my and Ms. Moros's jobs, I have to be careful to not be too
    specific.

    2. I am very fortunate that I have a pretty good support system for stuff
like ADHD, anxiety, depression, friends and romantic partners going
through trauma work, family illness and trauma.  I know a lot of people
at NF who aren't so fortunate, so I want to make it clear that I'm not
judging anyone else's choice to share.  For me, NF is about getting
physically healthier and getting more awesome (Rangerly) overall.
So, I try to keep the focus here on my physical stuff, not my emotional stuff.
I have a tendency to over-share and I would rather be helpful to others
here than complain about my own stuff.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
Possible Challenges and Adaption Strategies:

1. Make-up times - Sunday is reserved as a rest day, or as a make-up
time for things not yet done.  Evenings can be make-up times also.

2. Plague Protocols - if really sick, sleep deprived, double points
   for whatever I get done.
Do easiest to hardest - stop when I can't do more.
   Currently that is:

       A. Calm meditation
       B. Record Daily Food
       C. Prepare for the next day
    D. Yoga (restorative or Yin) rather than active Yoga
    E. Walking
    K. Bodyweight workouts

Do other things to replace points:
    L. Reading about better form for exercises

3. Workout substitutions - when I can't do normal workouts for whatever
   reason

    - Can swim laps, or use bike, or walk at YMCA

4. Redacted Protocols

Zero Week - Days 1 - 4

So New Year's and on went pretty well for me.  Ms. Moros and I had company over for most of those days.  Ms. Moros is getting her certification in expressive arts therapy, so we actually had an "artist in residence" program going on those days.  Much art was done.  I was on the sidelines, gluing together our Broken Token stuff for the Gloomhaven game.

On New Year's Day, we did a two hour yoga event, which is right at what I can do.  I am getting better, though I need to work on core strength.  The stepping through from downward dog is still really challenging (I still have a big belly).  Much sweating was done (see below).  The alert ranger will notice my very cool Yoga bag :)

This morning, I re-started my walking program in the morning.  It's cold here (30F), but not as cold as it usually is at this time.  I'll start doing points when the challenge officially starts on Monday.

Welcome back! Was it Ms Moros that was anemic? I dealt with that for many years. It can really make you feel like crap. Glad she is getting better.

Great that you were able to do yoga for two whole hours!

Yep, Ms. Moros was the anemic one - she wound up missing six weeks of work and had an ER visit.  Fun was not had, but she is much, much better now.  The problem was (as I'm sure you know), it takes a really long time to build the iron level back up.  She's at the normal range now, but on the low side.

So, things have been ok.  Just got back from Sunday morning Yoga, which consisted of many planks and many downward facing dogs.  Good for core and my arms, so that felt good.

Saturday was quiet (many chores were done), and Friday was some hip opening yoga.  Trying to stay focused, and not add things that are not part of the plan right now.  This is one my classic blunders:

Wow, that sounds miserable. Does she like beef? Trying to eat as much beef as possible (yay an excuse for steak) . Liver is great too, but most people don't like it.

I was basically force-feeding her steak after a while.  The problem became that she got really nauseous, and she didn't want to eat anything.  She actually does like beef and spinach, and she continues to take iron supplements.

Day 1 - Did all of the things (but just the list).

Good start - did morning workout, logged my food, and am now posting, which ends my evening stuff.  Watched one episode of Dr. Who (the Tenant era), and wonder if you could make a Dr. Who workout of running around frantically.  Or, actually any running of doctors:

Day 2- Taco Bell: 1, Moros: 0

So, yesterday was not my best day.  Due to a cold/ear ache, I woke up at 3:25am, and could not get back to sleep.  So, I was out of it most of the day.  I did walk for about 10 minutes, but otherwise was not very successful.  Taco Bell was had, which is not good for me in general.

(skipped many gross memes to find):

Total Points: 19/14 - The first number is the exercise stuff, and the second is the food stuff.  I'm breaking it out this way for a while, so I can make sure they get balanced.

Day 3 - Better Recovery

So, today was much better.  Got some decent sleep, woke up at 5am as planned, and then did Sunrise Yoga.

Went to work, actually accomplished stuff, and here I am.  I even recorded all of my food.

Day 4 - Moros 1 - Yard of Beef 0

So, a friend gave us a "Yard of Beef" from Hilshire Farms for the holidays.  I have officially finished it.  Thank Aragorn..

It's pretty ice where I live, so instead of walking, I did retro-like walking in place to YouTube videos.  Heartrate was elevated.

I'm pretty tired from work, so I will do points tomorrow.

Days 5 - 7 - Week 1 Wrap-up

So, things are going ok.  On Friday and Saturday, I did some more challenging yoga, and worked a lot on my class preparation.

The semester starts again on Monday.  My food tracking fell down on Friday and Saturday, so I need to re-boot that.  I did get in some better food, and Ms. Moros made a new recipe with quinoa - https://www.lazycatkitchen.com/quinoa-superfood-salad/

So, I'm a little down, because I could have used another week to rest up and prepare, but that's not in the cards.  So, I will have to ranger on, and possibly start growing a beard :)

Food Points: 43 / 86

Exercise Points: 53/73

Day 8 - Back to school, tired, but better

So, today was the first day of the semester, but I did get my morning exercises in, and had over 9,000 steps.  Managed to do legs up the wall.

I am pretty tired, so I will do points later, but I can tell a difference in my mobility, and I'm in less pain than I usually would be.  That is real progress.

Day 9 - Pretty Tired, but nailed it today

So, a good day overall.  Woke up, did odd walking in place, and stayed focused.  Did a lot of needed paperwork, which at least clears the mental decks.  Did some planning for the de-cluttering/self-care challenge me and Ms. Moros was doing.  Had a healthy lunch, with wraps, chicken, lettuce, and other stuff.  We had quinoa stuffed sweet potatoes for dinner.  Then, as planned, we swam some laps at the pool.

I also found out that my local Y has free yoga classes that I could be going to:

godzilla-face-palm-for-when-an-epic-face

I will probably try them out with Ms. Moros, and see how they compare.  Even if they are not as good as "Awesome Yoga Place" that I already go to, free is nothing to sneeze at.

For me this is sooo important. Especially when checking off stuff on that list. Usually to find out, stuff wasn't as big a problem as i thought.

Reading the rest of your day, your are quite, right, it was a great day!

I really liked seeing the picture of you a couple of posts back! Seems like you have been kicking ass and takin names this challenge, keep it up!

Week 2 Wrap-Up: Progress through the craziness

So, as mentioned previously, this week was the first week of a new semester for me.  Normally, this week is chaos, and exhausting.  I did do a lot more exercise this week than I would normally do:

  • Did all my morning Yoga
  • Did two hours of Yoga with Ms. Moros during the snowpoclypse on Saturday.  We got around 8 inches of snow in 24 hours.
  • We did a lot de-cluttering, including moving many books around on Sunday.

Things that need improvement:

  • My food logging is not very regular.  There is a lot of little kid stomping my feet about this, but it's something I need to understand, work with, and overcome.
  • I don't have a good routine for some of the other things I am doing, like reading the "Better Brain solution" book, and making sure I eat enough Omega-3s.

Still, a much better first week of classes than I used to have:

Food Points: 70

Exercise Points: 102

In honor of MLK:

Week 3 Wrap-Up - Life got in the way, but I am still here

So, I didn't post a lot this week, because I had three big issues come up.  The first was a personal one, but it was a really good thing.  So, it disrupted my posting schedule, but I don't really mind.  I had a PAPERWORK DISASTER of the epic variety, which created all sorts of downstream stuff:

business-commerce-paperwork-paperpushers

The third was a really cool event we do at my school, which was great, but took a lot of my weekend.

More later...

Edit: My week 3  points are: 136 Exercise, 125 Food.  I'm not thrilled with these numbers, but I am still moving forward, and things should get less crazy soon (crosses fingers).
