Basically, my dad has been on a heart transplant waiting list for about 2 years.

he got a call wednesday morning that there was a possible match for him. by 430p he was in surgery - it took 12 hours! he came through so great, and the next day woke up totally normally and is doing SO well.

Oh! Wow! Congratulations to your dad! I'm so glad he's doing well after the surgery and that you and your stepmom are there for him now!

today he's truly "with it," and I'm feeling like maybe I can head home tomorrow morning to get home before the big snowstorm hits the area (I live about 4 hours east of here, and we are forecast for 12+ inches I think, followed by iiiiiicccceeee). If I don't leave tomorrow morning early, I will need to stay through sunday afternoon.

It's comin'! Whenever you depart, I hope your travels are safe!

hi darlings!

firstly: daddy is doing great. He's been moved down to the cardiac stepdown unit (from ICU)! he's having problems with his shoulders* but other than that everything with respect to the heart is going great. he's still having minimal support to the heart to keep it on-track as it gets settled / wakes up but the doctors are so happy with his progress.

secondly: um, Week 2 was kind of a bust. I didn't track my food at all for about 1/2 the week because I was eating weird hotel breakfasts and not having lunch and trying to be practical at dinner. on sat. I drove home to beat the storm and I had 2 hard boiled eggs and a 4 oz yogurt at the hotel, then 2 more 4 oz yogurts and a tiny cup of peanut butter and a bunch of sugar cookies on the drive home from 11-3 (p.s. I made it home ok). the whole time in boston it was like that. 1 1/2 cups of instant scrambled eggs and 2 breakfast sausages for breakfast, no lunch, and then a steak salad with basically a whole head of romaine lettuce for dinner. it's hard to be practical about food when you feel a little intense about everything. Also, I purposely didn't bring any exercise stuff with me when I went out there because I knew things would be hectic (but I did get a nice hour workout when we shoveled yesterday morning).

also, I didn't show up here much (which I DON'T feel bad about but you know). I do still plan to finish, though.

* he tore a rotator cuff and didn't have it repaired, and then had the LVAD (heart pump) put in and no one would fix his shoulder. and then he tore the OTHER rotator cuff and still no one would fix it out of concern for the heart pump / complications. these two old injuries + a 12 hour surgery and being in a bed for 2 more days are pretty rough on him. the moral of the story is: just like you shouldn't delay getting new tires for your car, don't delay medical procedures that your body needs.... they might not want to do them later when you really need them.

~~~
it's week 3 now! I started out today with exercise party and it involved a 12 minute exercise party special of push-ups on dumbbells / rows combo (he called these renegade rows/ is that a thing?), hang power cleans, and then bicep curls. afterwards I feel safe to say that my appendages were very noodley. I worked from home today and took an extra long lunch break to pick up and bring lunch to my husband and older stepson, who were fixing cars in the 0degF temperatures (WITH WIND GUSTS) because, well, it broke, and Nineteen needed his wheels to get back to college. But then we kind of decided with Nineteen that he needs to stay home because he has a pretty bad back injury and is in tremendous pain, and honestly, he doesn't have to tough it out in Ohio. he can take a short medical leave and get his back healed up.
however I did NOT track my food. I will start up again tomorrow with that.
man I need to catch up with y'all!
WOW ok so I am going to definitely get a D- at this rate for the showing up category.
week 3 was pretty hectic mostly because I was trying to stay on top of my dad's communications. my stepmom is not super comfortable using the iphone or whatsapp and until daddy was ready to use his tablet and phone himself, I was coordinating communications out to the family on his progress.
Last week was also hectic because we decided with Nineteen that he should stay home during this school session (his college does 6 week sessions with 1 course only) because of his herniated disk. he's in a lot of pain and it seemed like too much for him to handle his own doctors appts and care while also going to school (and not being able to lift things - he's in a diesel mechanics course). so Monday I was working from home and we ended up having a big family convo., and the boys' mom was out of town last week so Fifteen was staying at our house anyway, so we prioritized having a bunch of dinner excuses with the boys so they would have to hang out with us (LOLZ TEENAGERS AMIRTE?) I'm going with Nineteen and his mom to the doctors today for a 2nd opinion / course of action.
I DID, however, go to crossfit 5x. we did tkd on tuesday, thursday, and saturday. and then sat. I drove out to pittsburgh in the afternoon so I could see HAMILTON with my friend kelly who so so so kindly got me a ticket. That was sunday afternoon. I ate and drank everything in pittsburgh, and I'm not sorry, but I am feeling rather full still. I didn't log except for wedns and thurs last week.
I also had acupuncture on wednesday and chiropractic, which counts towards my recovery goal. HOWEVER, it's worth mentioning I am wellllll behind on that goal.
Also good news, dad was discharged yesterday! he is staying in the boston area until his wednesday AM appts and will go home after that, if all continues to be well.
week 4
monday I didn't do much and I'm not going to log my food because I got up at 430AM and drove directly to work from pittsburgh which was a long commute (nearly 6 hours) and I had weird road food.
today, however, I am back on the food-logging horse. I had a protein shake after exercise party and then tried out soft-boiling eggs in the instant pot. (I'm working at home, so have time to experiment.) I ate 3 with toast. I'm thinking about making cookies. It's snowing outside so i hope the drs appt isn't cancelled.  I'm super cold so I'm sitting with a heating pad on my lap.
gotta fit in some recovery tho' - that goal was maybe too much of a stretch for me. I thought I'd have more time to fit in some gentle movements during the week but that just hasn't happened.
