Miss Marissa: Back with a whimper

2018 in summary:

•    I didn’t injure myself. Mostly because I was super busy with work (I do this!) so fitness took a smidge of a back burner.

•    I started doing crossfit and competed in my first Olympic Weightlifting competition in October

•    I started playing softball again for the first time since middle school

•    I am still doing gymnastics

•    I chopped all my hair off! (see photo)

•    I got a promotion! I’ll be moving business areas at work so hopefully my time will ease up a bit

•    I ate a different pop-tart flavor for 23 days in a row I’m still working through the power rankings so hang tight.

For those new around here I am MissMarissa (MM if you wish) I’ve been around these parts for a few years, but haven’t been super active the past few months. I am hoping to live up a bit to that guild leader title I’ve been bestowed. I spent a lot of time focusing on powerlifting and then also took up gymnastics in 2016 after constantly being in awe of@raptron. In spring of 2016 I tore my left hip flexor and resulted in some muscle imbalances and bad movement patterns which seriously caused some what we’ll say “structural damage” in Feb of 2017. I spent majority of 2017 and into 2018 working on it. In Feb. 2018 I was finally able to squat below parallel again without a box and have since been working on building up my strength again to get back to where I was pre-injury (SQ/B/D- 97.5/50/112.5 kg #povertybench). I started crossfit in April because 1) I was already doing most of the crossfit components individually (lifting, gymnastics, reluctantly running) 2) I did not love the gym I was at 3) I was insanely busy with work and wanted to outsource my programming/coaching with something less time intensive than the virtual coach I was working with. And now here we are. Nerd cred: I fangirl pretty hard. I read a lot of comics, mostly DC, but I don’t discriminate. I also like space (obvi), Harry Potter, tacos, donuts, pop-tarts, taking selfies, and listening to podcasts. I also am not a huge fan of Star Wars, which people seem to forget every time I bring it up. *shrug* I live in Wisconsin, and I also am an alumnae volunteer for the sorority I was a member of in college (which I sometimes post about). You may hear (read?) me talk about Mr. J aka Mistah J named because 1) his name starts with a J 2) He’s my puddin.

2019 goals

So I have been brainstorming a list of things I want to do/be/go etc in a future version of Marissa. There is still a bit of decomposing/organzing/planning to do (with@Maigrey’s help!). Some of them are abstract (practice gratitude, show love, eliminate clutter, etc) and some are concrete (do the crossfit open, do the splits, read books) But things boil down to 5 basic categories:

  • Health
  • Environment
  • Relationships
  • Mindfulness
  • Work & Volunteering
I’m going to spend this first challenge picking one thing to help improve each of the categories except Work because with my promotion I’m not sure what that will entail just yet.

Goal #1: Health

Brush and floss before bed. I’m awful at this.

Goal #2: Environment

I am attempting to instigate the “one minute rule” in my home. Essentially, if something can be done in less than 1 minute you do it right away! It’s been super helpful so far with things like doing the dishes. I will keep track/points with the metric of Did I put my shoes and jacket in the closet when I get home?

Goal #3: Relationships

I’d like to keep in better touch with some of my friends who I don’t see or talk to regularly. I received some Harry Potter coloring postcards for Christmas. I will color and send postcards to 3 of my friends who live out of town that I want to keep in better contact with.

Goal #4: Mindfulness

In an attempt to heal(?) my relationship with food and nutrition tracking and to eat more mindfully and intuitively I am going to keep a food journal daily. I’m not weighing or measuring or counting anything, just writing stuff down. I was pretty good on this Sept-Nov and then stopped for a few reasons 1) I need some personal coaching/accountability in a style that works for me 2) travelling and holidays are hard 3) kind of a pain in the ass to carry around a bujo at all times (I know it could be digital but paper works best for me rn).

Spoiler I say heal because I can't say that it is broken right now? I think I'm pretty comfortable with my body as it stands and my habits and relationship with food overall. There are some things I'd like to further improve upon and I feel comfortable getting back into a bit of tracking/logging in order to improve some things such as lose a bit of weight so pullups are easier and a bit for aesthetic reasons. I'm sitting around 154 lb right now and I'm comfortable around 140 (but not uncomfortable where I am now - if that makes sense). Not becoming number obsessed as I have in the past will be key.

Tracking will look like this

Thanks for joining. It probably won't be colorful or fun or full of gifs, but the goals are pretty simple, so the challenge will reflect that as well.

Welcome! It has definitely been helpful so far! I've noticed my kitchen and living space is a bit more tidy the past few days. The sink is a bit emptier, counters a bit cleaner, and I haven't really noticed any additional "stress"

Day 1 1/7

Off to the races. A stellar day 1 in the books. Last Wednesday, 1/2 was my first day back in the gym after taking nearly 2 weeks off crossfit because of holiday travel and gym closure reasons (I still did some lifting, yoga, and *gasp* running). I promptly smashed my ankle on the assault bike during warmups. There was some brusing, cuts and I believe I bruised my Achilles tendon. I don't think there is any lasting damage, but it is still super tender and ankle dorsiflexion is limited. Because of this I took it easy at gymnastics last night and no tumbling. Worked bars (V-ups, pullups, glide swings, hip circles, pullovers), back walkovers, and handstands.

Love the one minute rule! I've been doing 5 minute tasks where I set a timer and do the thing, and it usually ends up being more like 1 minute -_-

Huh. It's like tiny stealth cleaning. Maybe I could trick myself into being tidier with this method. Anyway, I am sending healing vibes for your ankle. It will most assuredly be better very soon.

Day 2 1/8

Uploaded a photo of my ankle to IG earlier today. Yesterday's 6:30 am crossfit workout was:

warmup

6 min HS walking

5 supersets of KB alternating floor press x5, strict pullups x5 (I used the next to smallest band)

Finisher AFAP

1k row

50 pushups

50 sit ups

50 cal Assault bike

50 overhead squats w/ 15k (supposed to be walking lunges but had to modify for my ankle)

200 jump rope spins

The assault bike is my nemesis, so once I got on that thing I promptly DIED.

Did all my food journaling, teeth brushing, and jacket put-awaying. Made this for dinner. Went to bed "early" because I've been feeling a little run down /congested.

Also new Young Justice episodes came out last week so I've been rewatching Young Justice to get ready for that new season 3. It's pretty phenomenal. I still have to finish Titans too, but that's a weekend binge thing.

Kind of? More like just pick up after yourself immediately lol Thank you! It's already feeling a lot better, I've entered the fun color bruises stage!

Yep! It makes me realize how hard they are and how much my upper body and core strength is lacking wrt my leg strength.

I'm not sure I comprehend. Like you intend to do a task for 5 minutes and it only lasts 1 minute before you finish? Or you get distracted after 1 minute? lol
