When I was at my previous workplace I always brought lunchboxes with leftovers to have for lunch. But sometimes, when all my colleagues went out together for lunch I'd join them just for the social aspect. But then I'd usually not eat at the restaurant they went to, I'd just have my lunchbox when we got back to the office instead. But that's different compared to this situation. Had the kids not been around I could have just said "Thanks for offering to bring pizza, but you know, New Years resolutions and stuff, I think I'll just have a salad later instead". And all the grownups would just nod in recognition, possibly thinking to themselves "I wish I had that willpower" or "Yeah, I really shouldn't eat pizza either". Thinking I was "really good". But also have no clue about the potential binge I might have when they don't see me, because of the deprivation...

And regarding the kids: Is it really better to teach them "you have to eat what someone brings because of respectfulness" and not "eat what you like when you like it"?

I agree with Arkadia but if you are afraid to offend your wife's friend you could say I don't feel like it, that could easily mean 'my stomach is upset' and the friend won't get offended, but it is also the truth being 'what my body is signaling to me is that today I don't desire pizza'

Just watched this video. I needed to hear this now :) And it ties in to what we were discussing before my pizza moment :P  It's about knowing "how much to eat", or, at least knowing if you've eaten enough

She touches on this a bit in the video I posted above. If you're thinking of food too much, you probably need to eat more :)

Also, when I eat "With people" I eat a lot less then usual because of talking and socialising and stuff. It distracts me and I am full faster.

Absolutely. And for those with anxiety about this, it gets easier over time! And it's really really fun to be able to hang out with friends without the constant chatter of busy fingers, thinking/stressing about the foods or grabbing for another drink etc.

YES! I work with a lot of women that have severe bone density loss, and despite serious medicinal regiments they are also Rx'd this kind of exercise. For folks without these kinds of serious conditions, just some simple doesn't-have-to-be-crazy weight bearing work included in the normal routine can help slow and reverse the gentle bone loss that occurs as we age.

Pizza meal over and done with. I'm happy with how it all went :) 

 

I made roasted broccoli with olive oil, piri piri infused oil, chili flakes and parmesan. The pizzas came with the traditional Swedish pizza salad (cabbage, oil, vinegar, sugar, salt, pepper).

They brought kid-friendly pizza, so marinara, cheese, ham, with/without pineapple.

So I had the veggies, and one slice of pizza without pineapple.

 

It tasted alright, just as you can expect it to taste. I was happy with one slice :)  And no questions asked, so I didn't have to worry what to answer. And the kids were done with their pizzas fast, and ran out of the kitchen, so they have no idea how many slices I ate :) 

 

I got the broccoli under the broiler a little late, the pizzas were getting cold before the broccoli had a chance to get enough color... But other than that it was very tasty. The others thought they were too spicy, but I thought it was just right :) 

 

Next challenge is the sweets my wife have prepared for our guests...

Glad your meal worked out just fine! 

 

I just have one comment for 'next time' - like Suzy said, salad isn't the only option for a side dish! Since you know you can't get properly full on pizza, you could make something else that compliments it, like chicken strips. And you can make enough side dish to offer it to your friends and family, so then you look like a good host instead of a picky eater. ;)

Ohh, I did make enough salad for everyone. Not just me. Had to google chicken strips. We don't have those here (or chicken fingers, which I guess is the same thing). Oops, scratch that. Just googled it, and we do have chicken fingers in the frozen section of the grocery store. I have never seen anyone eat them though, much less tasted them myself.

Others usually don't concern themselves with how much others eat. Unless it's really obvious someone doesn't eat anything or a whole lot multiple times in a row. 

Did you concern yourself with how much the others ate?

"Chicken strips" is basically what it sounds like: chunks of chicken in long strips. "Chicken fingers" (or sometimes, "chicken tenders") is the same thing, but usually breaded. The strip-shape is ideal for dipping in sauces such as marinara or other sauces that go well with pizza. That's why I said it's a complementary food to pizza.

Here's a recipe for home made ones, rather than the frozen breaded kind, which I'm not a fan of:

Those happen to be "low carb" I guess, but that's not why I'm sharing that recipe. This one is pretty easy and has a lot of flavors that go with pizza, like paprika, oregano, and parmesan cheese "breading". You could just as easily swap the parmesan cheese back for bread crumbs if you wanted to, though. Serve with marinara sauce or ketchup or spicy mustard... or "ranch dressing" if you want to be really American about it. :P

 

EDIT: Whoops, I just realized that that recipe just says "2 pounds of chicken tenders" with no direction on how to actually make chicken tenders. Sorry!

You could follow that recipe for the cutting-the-chicken and marinade part, and then switch to the other recipe for the spices and baking. Or you could just follow that one...

 

Tips on marinade: lemon juice works fine, but dill pickle juice is the best one IMO. :)

Chicken strips...

 

Sweden We clearly don't eat pizza like you do :)  We don't have crusts with cheese in them. We don't have dipping sauces for the crust. Pizza places don't have pizza crust bread sticks. The only kind of pizza that comes with any kind of sauce is kebab pizza. And the sauce is drizzled all over the pizza. Kebab pizza is actually the most sold pizza here :)

The sauce is a yoghurt and mayo based sauce with cumin, some herbs, chili, tomato and something sweet, usually orange soda... 

 

So we don't have a culture of dipping anything when eating pizza :) Ohh, and of course we eat the pizza with knife and fork, not our hands. The pizza doesn't even come sliced in the box unless you specifically ask for it.

I, on the other hand, failed myself today, doing exactly the opposite of what I suggested.
I had big breakfast (was hungry, so good), then I got offered a slice of toasted bread with butter, that looked delicious and I ate to satisfaction.
Al lunch I was still satisfied, but I had lunch ready and I was afraid it would spoil (error 1) and I ended up full but not satisfied!
Then munched almonds brainless (error 2) and went for dinner with a friend. Not feeling hungry I ordered a main but not a starter (thank God!) but then ignored the stuffed feeling and kept going (error 3)
Tomorrow I will do better!

I got comments on how much I eat very often!
From my parents who nearly end up in a fight, to my sister, to my aunt (who dare to say I should eat less because I have a boyfriend, how f*cked up is that?!?), to my friends.
It is so rare that it doesn't happen that I know who doesn't (my boyfriend, for example)
And it used to happen when I didn't have eating issues. 'Look at her eating' was both taken as good and bad example for others at the same time...

So I had a good food/bad food moment last night. First time in awhile! The TLDR of it all is that a had a mindful moment with one thing that used to be on the bad list, and a mindless moment on another thing that also used to be on the bad list. Combined, I became annoyed with myself for the mindless and questioned my allowance of both of those items. I journaled it all out this morning and feeling better about it, and it's woken up some extra alert attention going forward.

 

All in all I've been on the nutrient struggle bus lately, (honestly, I've been on the functional human struggle bus lately! No shock that one follows the other) I haven't been having complete regular meals, a revolving door issue with other aspects of my functioning-hood not being inline. Meal prep needs to happen this week, particularly for breakfast, but I am also going to try on some tried and true favorites so that I know I'll eat them. I'm going to try making a quiche for breakfast, and since Mr Red does his own, I can use bacon which he will not eat and that I love an rarely have! I'm looking forward to having better energy next week :)

Conversation Starter: We all end up wavering and faltering along our paths at times, what are some things you guys like to do when that happens? Do you have any fail safe plans in place for roadblocks you know that you are susceptible to?

UGH I hate hearing about this out in the world, it's NOT OKAY in my book to have food shaming and judgement. How are you handling it? i have resources if you're interest, just don't want to assume you aren't on your own journey

I believe that suggestion was more about complimentary flavors/seasonings.

Fries, when eating burgers. At McD it's ketchup. But my absolute favorite is sweet potato fries dipped in aioli Yummy

Other than that the only thing I can think of is potato chips, and even that is not all that common. The default is to serve the chips without dipping sauce.

Asked my wife and she added sushi, which we dip in soy sauce, often with fake wasabi stirred in.

I'm quite struggling tbh.
Whenever I am at my parents (not often as I live in another counrty) I revert to teenage behaviour of 'oh, can't I eat? I'll eat more then!' that is not healthy either.
I know it comes from a place of love so I don't want to be angry at them either, just good intention don't always produce good actions.
Resources are always good! Thank you already :)

Honestly, I don’t have much of a plan that deals with faltering IN THE MOMENT. Going outside for a long walk followed by a good night sleep is my best case scenario. What’s been helpful to me lately is positive self talk and forgiveness the day afterwards.  The accountability and forgiveness here in the NF community helps a lot, too. 

 

Your meal prep sounds like a great way to get next week off to a positive start. @RedStone Especially if there’s bacon in the meal prep. I love bacon!
