New year, same exact catchphrase goals as always.

Okay, so first, the exhaustive abridged version of my goals for Q1 2019:

Spoiler

Writing

* Finish the first draft of my novel

* Finish Kickstarter rewards

Community

* Work on gaming con

* Backlogged design project

Finances

* Roll over my old 403(b) and figure out how my pension works

* Save for a house

Joy/Personal

* Ride my bike once a week

* Read 12-13 books (for a year total of 50, from 40 in 2018)

Health

* Complete 33 workouts (for a year total of 132, from 120 in 2018)

* One nutrition quest per challenge

Skillful

* Release the OSS project I've been working on

* Consolidate all my blogs into one

Sustainability/Environment

* Complete a clothing diet (aka Project 333)

* Apply to Master Naturalist program

tl;dr: Lots of writing and exercise, cleaning up some backlogged projects that I never want to think about again. I added a new category this year (sustainability) because it's something I want to think about and act on way more often. It used to be rolled into my "community" category but it didn't get enough attention.

Okay, so given that those are the things I want to achieve at the start of this year, what do I need to do to get there?

Q1: Workout 3 x per week. (health)

I did hit my goal of 120 workouts last year, on the nose! That was an increase over the 2017 goal of 104, which I also hit on the nose. I'm feeling a bit intimidated, but that's been true every year. 3 workouts per week = 156 workouts, so I still have 24 workouts as wiggle room. I'm excited about this goal.

Q2: Salad or veggies 4x per week. (health)

I upgraded 1x per week over my last challenge. It's starting to feel pretty easy but I would like it to be EVEN EASIER.  This week I've made two pretty weird salads and they both came out okay.

Q3: Work on novel & KS rewards for at least a few minutes, five days out of the week. (writing)

I *hate* rolling goals together into one like this, but I've been doing this successfully for a while now.  So I think it'll still be a pretty effective goal.

Q4: Set aside one working period per week for my backlogged projects (underlined up in the yearly goals, misc. areas of focus).

I have a lot of projects I want to get done, but I struggle to put time aside to actually *work* on them....meaning I end up waiting til they become urgent. Which is bad in its own right, and then some projects *never* become urgent and just lurk over my shoulder like a creep. I AM DONE WITH CREEPY HALF-ABANDONED PROJECTS FOREVER.
Priority: Gaming con work, OSS project, Blogs, Backlogged design project, 403(b)/pension research

Hey, all! Mid-week 1 check in!

Zero week went pretty well, and I wasn't even *trying*.  I am on track for my monthly work out goals, I rode my bike to the grocery store (which is a place I've been meaning to ride to for a while.)  Been working away at the novel and am finally starting to get into the mucky middle part. My last x-stitch is verrrry close to done for the KS rewards.   I even went ahead and did the extra work period to get rid of my crappy and lingering Ancient Backlog of Goals That Became Obligations.

This week is also going pretty well. Two workouts so far, novel & KS rewards are 2/2, and I have my work period scheduled for Sunday morning after our house guests leave. It's kind of a busy week too, with something almost every evening, but it has just motivated me to squeeze in ten minutes of writing or cross-stitching whenever I can and it feels manageable so far.

Woot, grats on an unexpectedly productive week! I've found that it's much easier to get a little more done when you're already working than it is to start when you don't have much going on. Brains are ridiculous, but nice job making it work for you.

Okay! Week is still going okay, though it's feeling a bit wobbly. I rescheduled today's workout for Sunday morning, because we have house guests and I also really needed some extra sleep.

I've also had a few things on my mind that feel really..."challenge-y", but I don't have space for in this challenge:

* better mornings

* more time outside

I've tried both of these on other challenges, but they were usually like..."take a walk" or "wake up at X time".

I'm going to try tracking the days I go outside, even literally for 10 seconds, and maybe next challenge I can include some goals.  One thing I've already noticed is that today, when I'm working downstairs right by our big sliding doors, I've been outside several times. On a regular day, I'm upstairs and I just...the outside doors may as well be a mile away.

This week is looking pretty promising. I've scheduled my extra work time, we have salad makin' stuff, etc. I think this week I'm gonna get my last cross-stitch finished on the kickstarter rewards which means I only have 2 hand-written items left! :O  I also just realized this may be my only challenge of the year that isn't interrupted by travel. So let's make it count! Relatedly let's figure out how to make travel less of an interruption, but for now, I'll enjoy this chilled out time.

Only downside is I rolled my ankle during a workout yesterday and it's unhappy. It didn't seem so bad, but this is Ye Olde Sprained Ankle, so it's complaining plenty now.

No big surprise that after a giant success of a week, things might not go *so* well:

Week 2:

Q1: Workout 3 x per week. 3/3

Yay! Ahead of schedule for the year!

Q2: Salad or veggies 4x per week. 2/4

Not sure why salads didn't work except that work was a circus this week. Ended up eating super late and just stuffing whatever I could find (mostly popcorn) in my mouth at like 2:30 every day (not proud).  Still, I can push back on that and make time for food. This week I will focus on making sure I have time to come eat my lunch.  Also, I think I'm not super thrilled by the salad options we have at the moment, not sure why I'm such a hater.

Q3: Work on novel & KS rewards for at least a few minutes, five days out of the week. 3/5, 2/5.

re: Novel; I'm super tired of working on it and have been tearing my hair out trying to assess if I actually need a break or if this is just resistance talking. Every other project in the world seems more fun than the novel. So, after much heart-searching and blah blah blah, I've decided I'm going to do one last push to get a few more scenes written, I'm going to ignore every plot hole and not solve any structural issues, and just write the last few scenes I can think of.  Then I'm letting it rest while I make some ZINES and POEMS and LITERALLY ANYTHING ELSE.

re: Kickstarter: I finished the last cross-stitch!!!!!!!! I need to wash it and make sure the person who is getting it likes it.  So I haven't been working every day this week because I feel so pleased that it's done. But today I'll wash it and tomorrow I'll get started on the last two hand-written poems. Maybe I can get this done by like, early February??

Q4: Set aside one working period per week for my backlogged projects. 1/1

Working on backlogged projects has been swell. I have not done a *lot* of it this week, but even just setting a ten-minute timer and telling myself I *have* to do *something* is breaking through some fear-crastination I've been struggling with. I just started a task that I've been unable to do for literally 6 months and just keep moving it to my to-do list each week. :( I don't know that I want this to be my way of working forever but for now it's doing good things for that backlog.

Unrelated to the challenge, I zested a million citruses this week to make both some liqueurs (orange rosemary and orange clove) and some candy (candied grapefruit peel). I also started growing oyster mushrooms and I feel like a wizard, more or less.

Nice work on the backlog, that's tough to face down and start cleaning up. The zesting thing sounds neat, is that for your own stock or to make as gifts/ to sell?

Mostly just for me & the housemates.  We ended up with a big box of fresh-off-the-tree citrus from my stepmom and I just wanted to take advantage of it as much as possible.

Also, zesting oranges is possibly the most cheerful smelling activity in the whole world.

All around felt pretty good. Did a fairly long session of work on backlogged projects today--wish I could *finish* some of them, but like, they are big backlogs so that's how it's going to be. I'm also using it a little bit as a "time to do things I am avoiding" session, which makes it SUPER unpleasant, but I'm actually getting some stuff done.

I'm also *ahead* of schedule on my workouts and feeling like a boss about that. The app I use for my workouts has pushed me up a level and I'm definitely feeling it--in a good way. I tweaked my ankle *again* though, wtf is up with my left ankle. It's noticeably dumber than my right one. :(

This coming week doesn't have any big obstacles. I'll be traveling on zero week for work and it's going to be super hectic, so kinda glad I don't have to worry about too much then. I've decided I'm going to take one night for myself entirely on the trip--staying in the hotel, ordering delivery, and generally relaxing. San Francisco is great but....so is downtime, especially given that I live in a house with four other adults.

Here's to a solid end of the challenge!

Is there a consistent movement/ direction that causes problems? Might be worth looking into ankle PT movements to strengthen it a bit.

Nice work on your goals, though, you're killing this challenge. I hear you on the boring, unfun backlog clearing, but it'll be worth it when you clear it out.

Normally, yes. This time was different--over extension rather than twisting. But still....PT is likely a good idea.

I don't have my tracker for last week to hand, but I'd say I got about 80% of my goals.

This week I'm travelling for work, and I'm just trying not to wreck myself with too much food and drinking and too little sleep.  There's a big ass salad bar at work every day so I am doing pretty good on the veggies.

Next challenge I will probably keep the salads, workouts. Maybe also the backlog periods. Likely a writing quest. I'm also hoping to try both rock climbing and a ninja gym next month. So. We'll see how it goes.

THANKS FOR FOLLOWING ALONG! Challenge #1 in the history books.
