Sciread77
So we just got back from the theatre conference. The show was awesome and I’ve a dearth of words to describe how proud I am of my wife and her program. We did get trapped an extra day in the snow storm, which wasn’t bad except we were all tired. Now that we’re back, we’re talking about giving the Keto diet a shot. I probably would have tried it earlier but I don’t do well on strict diets like that alone in my household. I can eat more of something (like protein, lentils, etc) by changing my breakfast and lunch but I’m a sucker at dinner/dessert/social eating on my own. Also, my wife has had trouble with fatty meats like pork for years so I didn’t want to suggest a diet comprised of 70% fat. However, I am more than willing to give it a try. For me, I have read a lot about reducing inflammation and helping mood. I’ve psoriasis and arthritis related to it so that’s a major plus of the thing. Also, I’m excited to try something that might help manage my moods. My light has been wonderful since moving to work in the Wampa Cave but I’ll happily try other stuff too. I dont have any real real goals or direction on this one yet. I think the thing is a short experiment to make sure my wife doesn’t just get sick the whole time from the food. So, if you’ve got recipes or suggestions I’d be exited to hear them! 1 Quote Adventurer, Half-Dwarf Chaotic-Good Paladin Ne me dites jamais les chances! ¡Nunca me digas las probabilidades! Sciread77
A full day in and the brain fog is real, y’all. This challenge I’m going to pilot an annual goal as well. Instead of measuring my reading by books, I’m switching to pages and words. The goal is to average 11 pages/2750 words per day in Spanish. That will put me on track to reading approximately 1 million words this year. It’s a paltry sum in comparison to my childhood reading habits in English but it’s also a substantial (and satisfyingingly round) number for the adult parent of 3 children. Additionally, I want to ensure that each child is introduced to 7 new books a week and read at least a book a day over the course of the year. In the pursuit of this goal, I unpacked and set up their bookeshelf in their room. We have a chapter book shelf, an unread/new book shelf, and a read/favorites shelf. So far, it’s working very well. Step 1 submissions for the change in life plans are complete. We must now wait to see if it comes to fruition this year. If not, we’ll need an alternative plan and working on it is what Step 2 is about. We have some options but I’m not sure which we’ll go with. Physically, I’d really like to get back into the regular practice of DDP Yoga. We’ve to clear out an area for it but I’m hoping to be able to do that soon. I also have to remove the rest of the stuff from the garage via donating or putting it away so we have the whole garage back for our cars and finish that huge VO project, which I’ve scarcely worked on in a month for a wide variety of reasons. That needs to start again and wrap up soon. 3 Quote Adventurer, Half-Dwarf Chaotic-Good Paladin Ne me dites jamais les chances! ¡Nunca me digas las probabilidades! We’re foodies so I think the biggest challenge will be continuing to find new and different food that works. There appears to be a massive variety of things available but I’ve not really been saving or cataloging them. Almost a week in and we’re doing pretty well altogether. The worst part is that all weekend the kids kept unwrapping chocolate candies from their hidden stash and offering them to us. Well, that and the actual cold moving through the family at the same time we were hit with the Keto flu. The Keto flu hasn’t seemed to be that bad though. Aside from occasional indulgences or rough time (like the holiday season) our main carb intake this year has been from pulses, legumes, and fruits. So it seems the goal last year has really prepared us well for this year. The reading goal for the kids is going smashingly well. They’re knocking it out of the park. Theone for me is is a little tougher. I’d be hitting it if it was reading 10 pages in English because that takes about 10 minutes. Reading in Spanish (and French) takes me substantially longer if I want to have decent comprehension. I seem to be able to do it on workdays but the long weekend was hard as I almost always have a small child around me wanting love and attention, and the family defaults to my top priority so I’m about 25 pages behind atm. I think I’ll be able to make it up though. I’m still learning at my new role and taking longer than the two previous hires to the team. I’m not used to this and I’m totally readjusting my mindset to that of apprentice. I’ll get it. But I’m concerned that my previous stagnation has affected my mindset for proper learning. I must change it. 1 Quote Adventurer, Half-Dwarf Chaotic-Good Paladin Ne me dites jamais les chances! ¡Nunca me digas las probabilidades! Sciread77
A quick test and some math. At my current Spanish reading speed, I’ll need 225 hours of focused reading over the course of the year. I’m sure I can find that in the roughly 6,200 waking hours I plan to have this year. Foodwise, I’m not quite dead yet. Actually, I think I’m over the Keto flu and I’m just feeling the awful cold the kids gave me. I’m 2 days behind my wife and at the same stage as my poor 3-year-old, who fell asleep fully dressed (coat included) bent over resting his torso and head on the couch last night. They’re having a chili cook off at work and that’s terribly disappointing. But it’s definitely not as bad and I’m feeling far less cranky and cloudy. Our whole family gets hangry and that’s been better for everyone, even the kids who are only getting Keto dinners. Major life plan update: still waiting and probably won’t hear until April. Looking at temporary alternatives as well as planning life around staying for a less-engaged year focused primarily on the major pivot. As for me, I’m looking for things everywhere and I don’t think I’ll have a huge amount of trouble finding work. And I like where I’m at so staying put isn’t a bad thing for me. 2 Quote Adventurer, Half-Dwarf Chaotic-Good Paladin Ne me dites jamais les chances! ¡Nunca me digas las probabilidades! Sciread77
Another tweak: over the last month or two as the depression has been hitting, I’ve not been very nice. Especially to my family. And that’s got to change too. I’ve been snippy or yelled when I’ve been feeling overwhelmed and that never helps anyone or anything. So I’m resolving to take a step back for a couple of minutes so people will continue to want to be around me. Because they’re all pretty cool and those relationships are too important. 2 Quote Adventurer, Half-Dwarf Chaotic-Good Paladin Ne me dites jamais les chances! ¡Nunca me digas las probabilidades! Sciread77
Tapping out. If it was me alone and not around anyone else, it’d probably work. Isn’t we’re gonna so weight watchers. We’re going to eat similar meals but with fruits and the full range of veggies. And we get our pulses back. Also, hopefully, that’ll contribute to the ease of being nicer. 1 Quote Adventurer, Half-Dwarf Chaotic-Good Paladin Ne me dites jamais les chances! ¡Nunca me digas las probabilidades! Sciread77
So the Keto didn’t work. That is to say, I was a cranky bratticus (worse than even the norm over the last month or two) and the insane tracking degree was incentivizing my wife to skip eating most stuff... not a good combination of things. I’m a big measured in general because I’m a spreadsheet nerd but I function most successfully by avoiding temptation. And Keto restrictions I’d be unlikely to succeed with along. Our friends brought fruit and avocado dip to a party yesterday and none of it was Keto-friendly in the quantity that I wanted. I’m concerned about my moods and being a good husband and father. It’ll be a point of discussion with the doctor Friday. 2 Quote Adventurer, Half-Dwarf Chaotic-Good Paladin Ne me dites jamais les chances! ¡Nunca me digas las probabilidades! Sciread77
1. Definitely not the Keto life for me. 2. Reading on track for the kiddos. We unboxed another 13 tubs of books yesterday, and their bookshelf has over 100 books they’ve not read yet. (And many more that they have). 3. My reading is behind. It’s a lot of work to read that much in a second language in any effective manner. On the other hand, it’s giving me some insight into the lives of my boss and coworkers. I’m going to keep the goal for now. If isn’t a stretch, it’s not really a goal anyway, and I love reading. 4. Dr. initiated the stopgap meds and recommended as much sunlight as possible for now. I’m also to start DBT therapy next week. Actually, I already had session one as the doctor didn’t need a huge amount of time to take care of business. It’s going well so far and my wife said she’s noticed a big difference, beyond the drugged grogginess and confusion caused by said stopgap meds. 5. In place of Keto we’re doing weight Watchers and I’m doing Real appeal or something that’s basically a ww knockoff my work insurance pays for and give me $300 to do. So I figure why not give it a shot. I can do 9 sessions of that at least. Overall my diet stays largely the same except I’m adding fruits and legumes/pulses back in. I really love broccoli, nuts, spinach, and flax seed. 2 Quote Adventurer, Half-Dwarf Chaotic-Good Paladin Ne me dites jamais les chances! ¡Nunca me digas las probabilidades!
