Terah: Building blocks

Terah

Hello everybody, and welcome to my new challenge!

2018 was a year of recovery where I re-discovered Intuitive Eating, and in 2019 I will build on this. My ultimate goal is to feel healthy, fit and to be still kicking ass when I'm 80 years old.

To do this I'm building  habits this year. Slowly. January was meditation month. I meditated every day.

February will workout month. BUT I've been working out consistently since November. So I feel like I can add a little something else this month: Intermittent Fasting.

So, how will these things help me achieve my ultimate goal? Let me summarize it for you:

Meditation

It's been proven again and again that too much stress is detrimental for your health. I've got a few things that help me manage stress (like dancing, watching netflix). But for those days that I need a little extra meditation will help me a lot. I've been meditating every day, but I feel it's okay to just do it when I feel like I need to (which will probably still be almost every day). So that's what I'm going to do.

HARD-MEDITATION.jpg

Working out

It's been proven that working out helps to reduce the chance of osteoporosis, reduces stress, reduces the chance of a lot of scary illnesses. And it makes you look good naked. After a few months of consistent workouts I already notice that I'm stronger (I can open tight jars by myself now :D ), and my back feels a lot better. For those who don't know: I own a webshop where I sell products I'm making at home behind the sowing machine. And that's not good for your shoulders and back. Working out has been proven to eradicate the pain in my shoulders and back, which means that I'm more productive. My goal is to do a strength workout twice a week for now (I'm following the NF academy workouts, I'm at Gym level 3).

Monday-Workouts.jpg

Intermittent Fasting

It's been proven to be great against insuline resistance and your mental health. But my primary motivation is that it completely takes away my asthma. If I fast I can breath so much better and have so much more energy. Mind you: I don't count kcal. I still eat intuitively during my eating window. Right now I'm doing mostly 16/8 (eating between 10:00 and 18:00 hours), sometimes my eating window extends a bit into the evening if I'm really hungry, and I will eat sooner if I feel like I'm starving when I wake up (which hasn't happened yet). This hasn't been a goal yet, so this will be my new, additional goal for February.

Monday

I thought I'd do a little summary of my day, as I don't do them often. Enjoy :)

Did my chores in the morning while the boys got ready for school and SH got ready for work, brought the boys to school and did my workout. Did you know there are muscles in your forearms?! I mean, I knew, but this was the first time I felt them during the workout and they looked really weird with the pump of the workout going on there.

After that a shower and breakfast. I did some work on the computer and got lost on YouTube. Shit happens.

Then it was time to go to school to watch the kiddos while the teachers got their much needed break. First 5th grade (8-9 year olds), which is a breeze. I mean: 16 well behaved kids, and the loudest of them was home sick, who's not even that loud. And my oldest son is in that class, talk about behaved kids ;)

After that 6th grade (9-10 year olds), which is a much more challenging class to be in. We already split the class in two groups to make it a bit more manageable. Last week I had to remove two of the kids from class two times and their teacher went down on them hard for it. So now they hate me :p But I got the other half today, who doesn't hate me, and they were angels <3 Which I told them, so now half of that class does like me :D

After that it was time for lunch (toast with hummus and slices of avocado amd salt and pepper, soooo good). And than I got to go back to school to pick up my boys. I helped them with their homework, assisted them a little while they played so they wouldn't kill each other, made dinner, ate dinner and went upstairs to work behind my sowing machine wile SH watched the kids. At bedtime I read them a story, kicked them into their beds amd worked some more.

When I got downstairs I discovered there was a new episode of arrow on Netflix, which was really good.

So that was my day. I smashed my goals, did a lot, and I still feel like I could (should?) have done more. As I feel most days :p

You mentioned you do the gym workouts. You have the equipment you need at home, or do you go somewhere to do your workouts? What workout gave you the pump in your forearms?

I have dumbbells, a barbell and a gym bench at home. Nothing fancy, but it's enough to do most workouts. Sometimes I need to alter a specific exercise, but not often.

The exercise that got my forearms was the farmers carry with 10kg on each dumbbell.

The farmers walk/carry is such a basic exercise, yet so good for multiple parts of your body! :)

I was suspecting it to be targeting my legs, so at first I loaded up 20 kg in each hand. My legs couldn't care less about this, but my hands and arms were burning and I couldn't finish the 30 second walk, so I decreased the weight amd barely made it 30 seconds.

I really have so little strength in my hands/forearms... Doesn't help that my hands and wrists are tiny (my legs/butt on the other hand... ;)

Wednesday

Tuesday was zumba/dancehall night, it was a lot of fun again and for some reason I had tons of energy to keep me going. When I got home I was a little hungry, but since I was doing IF I ignored it. But it kept getting worse, so I ate a balanced meal of crisps and grapes ;) . Next time I should just eat something right away after  2 hour workout :p

This morning I got up and did some chores, got the kids ready for school (my husband took them to school today), and worked until it was time to ride with my sons class to the gym. (16 kids on a bike, it's not far, but it's nice to have an extra set of eyes). I biked back and worked some more, ride my bike back to the gym to ride them back to school.

I stayed at school to watch the kids during lunch break, went back home, had lunch and worked a bit more.

I rode my bakfiets to school to pick up the boys and drive them to sports practice downtown. On my way there a class from a different school was riding their bikes in opposite direction. And as kids do, they didn't watch their environment and one rode his bike into mine. He was okay luckily, but it was quite a scare.

When the boys were playing hockey at sports practice I went to drop off the packages I made this morning. Then we went to the library, which whe boys love, and after that to speach therapy for J. He's so close to saying the "s" with his tongue behind his teeth :D

When we got home J had a bit of a breakdown and just sat in the kitchen crying for a bit :( I tried everything to help him calm down. Chocolate eventually did the trick. I try not to use food in this kind of way, but I was out of options...

I made dinner, we ate dinner (SH was working late, so it was just me and the boys), cleaned up, gave the boys a bath and put them in bed. Worked a tiny bit more and now I'm watching Grimm on Netflix. I feel like I earned it

We call the Bakfiets "Christiana bikes

That sounds so much more elegant!

Here bak means "box" or "container" and fiets = "bike"

Around here we call this a bakfiet (I got mine before people got all fancy about it and still call it a box bike)

You really don’t see any three wheeled bikes, although there is one Christiana and one Kangaroo somewhere in South Minneapolis.

I like the looks of the wooden ones better. If you’re wheeling four kids and bags around in a heavy three wheeled bakfiet, I am seriously impressed. My little one is more than enough work.

Usually it's just two kids and a lot of bags :D And it has a battery to help you peddle. I wouldn't be able to bike the distances I have to without it.

But yes, I'm impressive :D;)
