NEW CHALLENGE TIME!

Due to recent and upcoming events, I have to change my priorities for a while. The main reason for this change is that I’m aiming to move out and live entirely by myself for the first time in June. Other than that, I have a wedding at the end of March, my 30th birthday at the end of this challenge (YAY), and my coworker invited me to her daughter’s quinceanera in June (for which I need to buy a dress -_- ). I’m sure more things will pop up along the way - I’ll have to take them as they come.

With the shift in priorities, and having looked back on what worked and what didn’t last challenge, I’m doing a bit of an overhaul. Back in my early NF challenge days I used a point system, and that’s what I’m going back to. It gives me a little wiggle room to tailor minor goals to whatever my schedule is each week, while also keeping up with my main goals. All tracker info and updates will live in the post below this one.

Self care Dragon

Journal:

This will be staying the same. It can be anything from a few words to a few pages, I just need to get something out in order to manage my stress level. 4x per week.

Declutter:

I want to start my almost-spring cleaning. This includes going through clothes, re-organizing, decluttering, and purging stuff I don’t want/need/use. I’ve made a list of general tasks to complete in my tracker throughout the course of the challenge.

Bewilderbeast Gif

Financial Dragon

The goals: cut spending, save more, pay down debt, and sell anything I don’t need or want. Finances are going to be a big deal from here on out, so I’m making it the main focus.

Spending/saving:

I want to live on my own, and I’m stubborn enough to find a way to make it work. Sure, having roommates makes apartment living more affordable, but I’m genuinely sick of dealing with other people’s shit (can you tell I’m a little salty...lol). I get more stress from it than anything else, so I’m determined to do it on my own even if it means becoming a hermit and pinching my pennies. I’d also like to start on the path towards homeownership. In order to get on track for both of these, I need to see exactly where my money is going so I’m going to be tracking everything in a notebook. I’m not excited for this process, but it needs to happen. From there I can cut out unnecessary spending, be thrifty, and save, save, save the rest.

Debt:

Between the remainder of my car loan and two credit cards, the combined total of my debt is less than 10k. Not terrible, but not great either. I want to begin by paying down the higher interest debt that I’ve accumulated - the two cards. To do this, I can go one of two ways -

1) One card has a much lower balance on it, so I put more money towards it and pay that one off first. When that is done, I can put a larger monthly sum towards the other card.

2) If I can find a low or zero interest card to transfer both balances onto, then I’ll only have one payment per month instead of 2. Having the low or zero interest would be a HUGE help too, as I’d actually be paying the balance down.

I want to look more into option 2, as interest is the real killer here. I’m going to do some research to see if that’s a possibility for me, and what options I have if it is. In the meantime, I’m going to work on option 1. Once these cards are done, I’ll go back to paying a larger sum each month towards my car until that’s gone too.

Sell:

Part of my self care goal is to declutter via almost-spring cleaning. In addition to throwing away and donating, I want to post any eligible items for resale online in order to make a little extra cash. Another thing I can try is to dig into my surplus of unused crafting supplies and make stuff to sell on etsy or wherever. Not sure how much luck I’ll have with that, but worse come to worst I’ll donate them.

Health Dragon

Diet:

I’ll be continuing to cut down on soda this challenge as well. I’m not totally cutting it out yet, but that will come.

Fitness:

Workout 3x per week, though with less specificity as to what kind of routine I need to do. Last time around I wanted to stick with beginner bodyweight and/or kettlebell workouts, buuuut I don’t like to confine myself to a box. As long as I’m purposefully getting exercise one way or another, it counts.

Boom, Bang and Bing.

Misc. Dragon(s)

There are a number of things I want to do outside of my main goals that I may not be able to do consistently every week or are only one-time events. Reading, photography, crafty stuff, updates, etc. They’re going here.

Crafting:

My mom asked me to crochet her some dish cloths, and I want to get those done before this challenge is out so I can ship them to her. Included in this category will be crafting things for an etsy shop or something of the like.

Reading:

I recently started a book called The Joy of Less, which is about minimalism and decluttering. I thought it would be a good thing to read while I go through my cleaning process.

Photography:

A continuation from last challenge, though I’m not sure I’ll be able to keep up with it regularly as I’d previously planned. I still need to find new editing software, but otherwise I’d like to get a few shoots in.

Updates:

Aiming for 2 per week overall, preferably on Mondays and Thursdays. I’ll try to be better about following other challenges as well; I know I wasn’t super on top of that last time.

Week 1, Day 2: 5/15pts  6/15pts

SELF CARE: 2pts

I got into a bit of a cleaning spree the other day and went through both of the trunks that have been hanging out in my room since I moved in. I've cut everything down so that it all fits in one trunk, have a second bag of donations, and a big bag of trash. I'm going to drop those off at a donation box within the next day or two.

No journaling last night, though I probably should have. I had a pretty crapola night, moped a lot of the time. Finances and moving have been stressing me the fuck out, and then we had a plumbing issue last night where the drains were backing up into the tub and bathroom sink from the kitchen sink. So that was great, but thankfully that was taken care of last night. I'm in a much better mood today.

FINANCES: 2pts

Started my tracking notebook on Sunday. I'm going to be updating it at the end of each day. Long term, I'd like to try to go multiple days, or even a week or more, without spending money on 'wants', only 'needs' (bills, utilities, etc)

HEALTH: 0pts (-1+1)  1pt

I had a bourbon and diet coke on Sunday, so I lost a point for that. Otherwise, I've been good about not drinking soda and sugary drinks. When I do get cravings for sugary drinks, I am focusing on having water instead - so far, that's been going well. I've had more water this week than I probably had the last 3 weeks combined, as bad as that is.

On another note - I found a pretty cool app to help with food prep and planning. It's called Mealime and I'm going to give it a shot and see how it goes. I'm hoping that it will not only simplify, but also help me save some money since it also makes a grocery list for you once you've selected meals. You can also plan for how many people/days you want to cook for.

OTHER: 1pt

Here's update one - not much to show yet given it's only the start of week 1. My yarn should be coming in today, so I can start on my mom's washcloths sooner than later and then send those off.

EDIT: I realized after posting that Sunday 3/17 didn't count towards this week, so my soda cocktail doesn't count towards my total.

Week 2, Day 1: 17/15pts (week 1), 2/15pts (week 2)

SELF CARE:

For week one, I completed 3 journal entries in addition to the 2 trunks I cleaned out earlier in the week. No self care for week 2 yet.

FINANCES:

Kept up with my financial tracked all of last week, and have so far updated it for this morning as well. Also put money into savings from my paycheck on Thursday.

HEALTH:

Worked out 3 times last week, but I did have 2 sodas/sugary drinks. Tried to stick with coffee and water otherwise, still a work in progress.

This week is a little fucky with me traveling from Thursday through Saturday. I wont have access to a gym or anything while I'm away, though I would like to go for a walk while I'm down to explore the area I'm staying in.

OTHER:

Missed my second update last week unfortunately. I ended up going to look at an apartment after work and then met up with a friend for dinner. My yarn came in late last week, but I did get two chances to sit down over the weekend and work a little on my mom's washcloths. Plan to get some more of that in today after I get home.

Week 3, Day 4: 13/15pts (week 2), 4/15pts (week 3)

This last week has been terrible. I have so much going on in my personal life, and it's seriously weighing me down. For the last few weeks I've slowly been falling into a depressive episode, and it's finally come to a head. As far as the challenge, I haven't done much of anything lately. If you want to see my tracker, I've updated it above. The few days I was away for the wedding last week were good, but I was anxious as hell the whole time. I'm feeling very lost right now, honestly. I have no energy, I haven't been eating or sleeping properly, and I feel like I want to cry all the time. In any case, I'm going to do my best to keep up with the challenge and update regularly. Hopefully keeping with a routine will make things a little less difficult.

Hey Wolfie! :) Glad to see you round these parts!

I did buy it, but I honestly haven't played much at all. I haven't really been playing video games much, and when I do it's not really holding my attention for very long. I have heard great things about it so far though! Happy to hear you're enjoying it.

Sending dragon shaped hugs!

Is there anything we/I can do to help?

Thank you, on both counts, I really appreciate it. Honestly, I don't think so, but I'll make sure to mention if there is. <3

Okay, update...

Scoring so far this challenge:

  Week 1 Week 2 Week 3 Week 4
Self care 5 4 2 1
Finances 8 7 6 1
Health (-2)+3 = 1 1 (-3)+1 =(-2) (-1)
Other 3 2 2 2
Total 17 14 8 3

Clearly there has been a decline, but I'm working on doing something each day even if it's just making sure I'm eating or showering or doing laundry so I have clean clothes for work. I tend to neglect myself when I'm depressed, so this is pretty important. Taking care of myself is priority #1 while I try to get all the moving pieces of life back into place.

Snapshot of what's going on in my life right now:

-My sister and I are trying to help my brother get back on his feet (help find a full time job, prep his resume, help him get interview clothes, etc), but it's been like pulling teeth.

-Both my parents are up my ass about making sure my brother's car get's fixed and registered (which is almost a year overdue at this point). This is a whole fucking issue in and of itself.

-Made the decision to put my own wants/goals/plans aside in order to help my brother out by rooming with him again. Trying to find a 2bed apt on a tight budget (he currently works part time) is incredibly difficult to do. Doesn't help that I'm also looking for a June 1 move in, and landlords aren't really looking that far ahead right now (which is absurd to me).

-While I'm tracking my spending, my financials are still a mess and it's stressing me the hell out. I feel like I can't get ahead.

-I've had almost no social contact with anyone outside of my family, roommate, and BF. Since getting rid of Facebook (which really is a good thing, I'm not going back), I feel like I've lost touch with everyone and I rarely talk to anyone anymore (outside of those listed). It's really isolating and I feel incredibly awkward/anxious about reaching out to people. The wedding and one night out have been the only real social interactions I've had in the last month or more, I don't even remember.

So yeah, lots of not so fun/stressful stuff going on to the point where I just want to laugh (which is an odd reaction, but I'm sure there's some psychological explanation for it). I can handle each thing individually, but they're all happening at the same time and it's a lot. Anyway, challenge stuff...

Self care:

Ha, well I've been doing plenty of self care type stuff, just not what's in my goals. I did clear out my car the other day, which NEEDED to happen something awful, so that's one more declutter off the list. I still need to get my desk and the bathroom closet done, as well as finish my bedroom closet - I did the clothes portion, but not the storage stuff. I'm sure there are some other things I can comb through as well.

Finances:

I'm definitely seeing a pattern in my spending, so once this challenge is out I'm going to put a plan into place to cut down/out the needless spending. I haven't posted anything for sale, but I did do donation drops a few weeks ago.

Health:

I had a lot more soda this last week than I have in a while. I also haven't been working out, aside from a walk over the weekend. My sister is trying to convince me to do an OCR with her in the coming months (Warrior Dash, MuckFest, BoneFrog, Rugged Maniac, etc), and I might be considering it. I'm nervous AF to do one, but it could end up being a lot of fun. I just want to make sure I have enough time to train because I don't feel like I'd be in good enough shape to do that right this second. She can't commit to anything quite yet anyway, as she's waiting to hear back from the Coast Guard on if she's been accepted.

Other:

I'm still working on my mom's dishcloths. It's slow going, cause I keep picking it up and putting it down again. I need to just sit and bang them out cause they're pretty simple. I haven't really done anything else on that goal list, if I'm totally honest.

Hopefully things pick up from here, I'm sick of being in this slump. It'd be nice to have at least one thing get done so I can stop worrying about it.

Laughter has so many physical health benefits!!!  And when I get really spun up and stressed out I always like to say "I'll take the crazy laughter over tears any day!"  Laughter means you are still functioning!!!  Its a weird win!

Take care of you some and keep going.  You sound like you are moving forward and have goals that will make life better.

You can do many things to help another person, but you can't make them do something they don't want to do. In other words, you can care for them, but you can't care instead of them.

This is definitely some crazy laughter, very similar to the laughter I had after my car got totaled a few years ago - like nervous/stress/anxious laughter. I guess it's a better reaction than having a nervous breakdown lol.

I'm doing my best to keep myself going, and I have at least one other thing that I didn't list off my plate that was stressing me out. Hopefully some of the other stuff starts falling into place soon, especially the apartment thing. Thank you :)

Thank you, Tank. I knew that's what this was, but it helps to see someone else say it too. I'm at such a loss with him, we all are. I don't want to see him flounder, but I can't be his keeper, and I shouldn't have to be. He's going to get this next year with me, but after that I need to move on and it will be up to him 100% to figure out his living situation. Hopefully in that time he will take up the responsibility to get his financials and job situation in order. I'll offer whatever resources I can, but I need some for myself too.

I've gone back and forth with a few landlords since Monday, but as soon as I get to scheduling a viewing the communication stops on their end. I finally head back from one that is having an open house tonight, so I'm going to check it out. It's a nice place, out of date aesthetically, but I can live with that. All utilities are included and there is laundry in the unit, so it's pretty ideal. We'll see how it goes, but it could definitely be a contender.

Don't really have much else to update on right now. Planning to workout tonight, but that's about it.

Challenge endings always catch me by surprise with how quickly they come.

Total scoring:

  Week 1 Week 2 Week 3 Week 4
Self care 5 4 2 5
Finances 8 7 6 7
Health (-2)+3 = 1 1 (-3)+1 = (-2) (-1)+2 = 1
Other 3 2 2 3
Total 17 14 8 16

Started off all right, kind of down hill in the middle, but I picked it back up for the last week and at least made the minimum points.

This past week went a lot better than previous weeks. My sister went with me to look at an apartment on Friday and it might just be the one, all I have to do now is apply. The landlord talked our ears off for 2 hours (I'm not even exaggerating); I feel like I know more about him than some of my family/friends haha. The unit itself is a small place, townhouse style with a basement, 2 bed with a tiny 'bonus' room that will probably be a shared den for my brother and I, 1 bath, front porch, and access to a shared yard in the back. This is an end unit too, which is ideal, and it's cheaper than pretty much everything else I've seen or found. Only downsides are 1) street parking, which really isn't a HUGE deal, just not preferred, 2) tiny little bathroom with the smallest tub I've ever seen - also not a huge deal, I can make it work, and 3) I'd need to buy my own washer and dryer for the hook ups in the basement. Given how inexpensive the rent is, I should be able to swing this. I'm going to fill out the paperwork today, and send it to the landlord tonight or tomorrow.

Saturday was my birthday, which ended up being more exhausting than anything else. I didn't make any plans, but ended up with a full day regardless. The BF and I were invited to breakfast with his mom and her BF the night before, so we did that first thing in the morning. After that we had some down time to go back to his and relax before I left to do family stuff. My Grandmother scheduled a time for my sister, she, and I to go to a local tea house for afternoon tea. It was actually really nice - the tea was delicious (I went with a vanilla orange jasmine oolong), and they were kind enough to tailor my portion of the food to work around my inability to eat dairy and almonds. We went back to my grandparents for cake and champagne with my dad and grandfather. It was nice to have the evening to wind down with BF and play some video games, as spending time with my dad's family always ends up stressing me out. BF gave me a really thoughtful gift - all the tools and ingredients needed to make my own cold brew and simple syrup, as well as teaching me how to make them. I drink cold brew coffee pretty much everyday, but I always get it from Dunkins cause I didn't have the supplies or know how to make it myself. Not only is this going to save me some time and be able to tailor it more to my tastes, but it's also going to save me a fair bit of money. Plus, it gives us an activity to do together, which is something we both enjoy having. Last night he taught me how to make Rosemary simply syrup, and next time we're going to make brown sugar cinnamon simple syrup.

That's really all I've got for now. I'm going to take this next week to plan out my challenge for the next round. Expect some cut down and possibly even more simplification, maybe a '30' theme given my birthday. I'm not too sure yet, so I guess we'll all find out haha. Till next time :)
