Spring Break! [Manarelle]

It's almost Spring!!

My gentleman classifies me as solar-powered, so the return of sunlight and warm enough weather to get sun on one's skin is definitely a cause to celebrate. And what better way to celebrate than cleaning out all the junk and funk that's collected over winter? (Ok, ok, there are probably more fun ways to celebrate, but hey, it works for me.) I've been going pretty nonstop at the Thor cosplay, and there's a decent list o' minor things I've been ignoring. Once I finish off the breastplate, it's time to take a break and knock those things out.

  1.  Finish breastplate: (3/3)
    • Weather - 03/13/19
    • Clearcoat/ seal - 03/16/19
    • Attach final hardware - 03/17/19
  2. Clean: (13/13)
    • Wash car - 04/07/19
    • Clean interior of car - 04/07/19
    • Clean tub/ shower walls - 03/17/19
    • Clean windows (groan) - 03/24/19
    • Pick up/ sort workout room - 03/19/19
    • Sort winter clothes - 03/16/19
    • Sort summer clothes - 03/17/19
    • Make a list of what clothes are needed - 03/17/19
    • Sort shoes/ see if anything is needed - 03/17/19
    • Sort fabric/ make a sewing list - 03/24/19
    • Take snow shovels back to storage - 04/07/19
    • Donate everything - scheduled for pickup 3/31/19
  3. Misc: (6/7)
    • Take pictures and put stuff up on eBay - 03/24/19
    • Update iTunes/ iPod - 04/05/19
    • Backup computer - 03/21/19
    • Stretch cosplay boots - toe - 04/08/19
    • Update cover letter - shhh.. it'll happen.
    • Something for the front door - decided against it.
    • Get a haircut - 03/16/19
  4. Secret goal #1 - 03/16/19
  5. Just go tf to the shooting range already - 04/09/19
  6. Garden, weather permitting: (5/5)
    • Add two blueberry bushes - 04/11/19
    • Redo ground cover, continual sheet - 04/11/19
    • Get perennial for front garden - not needed, it's coming back
    • Hard cut back front greenery - 04/06/19
    • Break down greenhouse - 04/06/19

Good lord, that's... a lot. Finishing the breastplate holds priority, and gardening is low priority and only as weather allows; the rest... I'll be happy if I get 75% of it done in this challenge. I will likely also sneak around and work a bit on the sewing side of cosplay, just because all work and no play etc etc. The usual maintenance of languages and workout still apply.

Yeah, I thought it would just be a few things, and then it kind of got out of hand. Hence the 75% goal. Especially since this weeks seems designed to keep me from working on the breastplate so far. :/

Something about this time of year, I think! ;)  Good on ya for not ignoring that stuff though.  It's tough.  Especially when it's nasty winter weather.

On the off chance that the person it affects knows I use this website and checks it out, I didn't want to post details. :) Aiming to complete this one this weekend, though.

Dude, jealous! I just have my two little 9mm handguns that have been collecting dust for about a year (shame on me). Just remember - keep the muzzle down. :D At the last range I went to that had semi-autos for use, some guy kept shooting the ceiling cause he got trigger happy and couldn't keep the muzzle low. When are you going?

Caught a wild motivation last night and started in on weathering he breastplate... and surprisingly, finished it as well. In order, below, is it freshly spray-painted, weathered and looking horrible under 6,000,000-watt craft room lights, and finally weathered and looking decent under regular lighting.

The weather is finally cooperating, so I hope to put a clearcoat on tonight, then assemble it tomorrow and be able to mark it as done.

REALLY hope so. Also, since I tend to read words by shape, not individual letters, I totally read that as yay breastimplant and was heavily confused.  The clearcoat is done, and other than an early mosquito that met its demise thankfully on the BACK, it looks good. Now to assemble it and find a place to store it.

9fda989e-e5ed-47e6-a5b7-a58d3acf55e2-ori

First off... he said yes (or at least came up the stairs with the ring on, and said he loved me, I'm counting that as a win). Second off, he asked how I got the ring right, since he doesn't wear rings (working in HVAC, that's a good way to lose a finger). I answered honestly that I googled "most common men's ring size", and totally lucked out that it fit him. It's a silicone ring designed for active/ mechanical people, so it has a low break tension and no losing fingers.

Now the rest of the story...

I know my gentleman is not coherent first thing in the morning, hence waiting for a weekend and the first note in purple. Dude came downstairs, looked at the note, commented on the Moon Knight comic, and had breakfast. Ok, so far so good. Over breakfast, I mentioned I needed a large box for something unrelated, he gets up and heads downstairs at normal walking pace.

Me: "Honey, no, stop!"

Him: "?? What are all these things....?"

Me: "You.. did you read the note on the whiteboard?"

Him: "Oh yeah... uh... I'll read those when I'm awake." /comes back upstairs.

So ok, we chat a bit more, he says he's gonna go take a shower (does the dude have no curiosity?!). He goes upstairs, I prep to clearcoat in the backyard, he comes down to the basement with the laundry hamper, ignores the box on the table, and says "I couldn't read them with my hands full of laundry. I'll go back once I start this load."

Ok, I go out and put the first coat on, come back in, he comes up the steps, then starts back down, reading them out loud as he goes and asking questions: "I don't know what transmog means." "What's pet growl?" Dude... it's bad group stuff, move on.... "I really like that Doctor Who quote, what episode is it from?" /facepalm. JUST GET TO THE LAST ONE, YOU FRUITLOOP!!!!

Anyway.. he did, he came up and gave me a hug and said I love you, and we chatted a bit more while I finished spray painting. Love the guy... what a nut.

Lol, no, no, no. I know it takes him about 3 hours to get really up and running on all cylinders, it was my bad for mentioning something downstairs before it all kicked in. I'm just pleased it eventually went well and he liked it.

Yesterday made me laugh so much, because I have literally 3 really close friends across the country, so my "announcements" were super easy (especially as one was in on the planning). My gentleman is substantially more social than I am, so his phone was going off all day long. He took a classic "look at my ring" picture and sent it to his gaming group and they were all squee'ing and gif posting and it was adorable. There was also a moment where we got a little too down from discussing bad news in the world - as usual, I said "enough of that. And in good news today... uh...." and he just held up his left hand. It took me a moment, but made me very happy. We went for celebratory tacos after the usual weekend errands and just generally had a nice relaxed day.

One last thing to update, and then it's back to business as usual: I had had lots of conversations with myself about when the wedding should be (likely a JP ceremony with a potluck/ BBQ afterwards for people who want to celebrate), because I like mathematically spiffy dates and other silly reasons. I suggested 5/4/20 and he agreed, so yay, we'll have an easy-to-remember, nice weather, nerdy, conveniently-on-a-Monday-so-oh-darn-there-can't-be-a-big-ceremony wedding date. Plus, it gives me time to complete the Thor outfit before starting on a wedding dress: priorities. I believe he is planning a honeymoon to Vegas so we can watch all the Cirque du Soleil shows there, which we've been discussing for a while but have never gotten around to.

I feel like weeks will go by with no real progress, then everything hits at once. Finished the breastplate today, total of 46:10 if you don't count the failed first attempt, 57:50 if you do. Learned a lot, especially the importance of properly stretched Worbla so you don't see seams on the final piece (sigh), but I'm quite happy with the results. As noted above, I"ll be ostensibly taking a break from cosplay to do spring cleaning... we'll see how that goes.

I'm not terribly caught up in the whole wedding idea. I spent a lot of time when I was younger worrying about whether I was emotionally... correct? Capable? Whatever. It still occasionally arises as a curiosity thing, but I've decided I don't care. What makes me happy is how excited my gentleman is about it. I would like a pretty dress, but also being practical about it. Plus, without additional tailoring, a wedding dress you wear once... armor you can wear LOTS of times. :D

So the challenge got off to a good start, had a very productive zero week/ weekend, then I hit a block. The car cleaning is scheduled for this coming weekend, and garden stuff is awaiting weather cooperation, so that's fine to be on hold for a moment. I started cleaning out the music/ iPod last night, but it's a lengthy task... I spent 40 minutes after Russian class deleting songs/ artists I've never listened to and didn't wow me on a 5-second listen, and I'm only barely into the Cs for artists, still have 9,279 songs to get through. (The trials of having an enthusiastic audiophile significant other with different music tastes than you.) But ok, that'll just take time and diligence.

I think the hitch in the gitalong is the fabric sorting. When I moved to the East Coast, I got rid of a huge pile of "wouldn't this be cool!" fabric scraps and even entire rolls, and vowed that I would only get fabric for what I was making right then, and not get more until I finished the project I was working on. Needless to say, that hasn't quite happened. Some of it was practical - I got extra for a planned costume because the store I got it from was 3 hours away, and if I messed up, I didn't want to drive 3 hours again - but some of it was good intentions and no follow through. And I'm somewhat ashamed of that, and hesitant to face it by going through the fabric heap. I'll put time aside this weekend to just suck it up and do so, but still. Shame.

On the up side, my burst of cleaning motivated the gentleman to do the same. I don't think he's aiming to clear off the walls or anything, but he's definitely talking about clearing away duplicates and stuff he hasn't touched in years, so here's hoping!

I'm planning to make my own wedding outfit as well, but mostly because I've always wanted a "mideval fantasy" wedding.  And once it's finished, I'll be using it for a lot of things.  The fiancee refuses to tell me what she's planning, beyond her bride's maids are helping and I'm not allowed. :P

Have you guys considered a themed wedding?  You might have an easier time getting into it, if you can make a costume instead of just a wedding dress.  It's your day, so you should make it your own.

Shame.

I feel you on the random fabric (and other assorted costuming stuff).  I want to get some of the space-saver multi hangers at some point so I can more easily see what I have and make a "if it doesn't fit on a hanger, I don't need it" rule for scraps.

Maxim 70: Failure is not an option. It is mandatory. The option is whether or not to let failure be the last thing you do.
