Jarric
KISS Keep It Simple Stupid Last challenge was a flop - I started late and then didn't update after the first week. Not good. Work is mega busy at the moment, and I can't pretend that it's going to let up much before the end of this challenge. But I miss this place, and I feel a bit directionless without the accountability here. That's why I'm running a super simple challenge this time round, with simple daily goals that I can answer "Yes" or "No" to. Rehab - 15XP I am still having hip issues, and pending seeing a specialist and figuring out what's going wrong I need to keep doing my rehab exercises. I'm not even 100% sure that these exercises are doing anything given that the physio isn't sure what's wrong, but building glute strength for my wear-arse arse can't be a bad thing. Workout - 10XP I might have mentioned this before, but I'm running an ultra-marathon OCR in 9 weeks (that would be Oblivion). So I should probably stick with the programme in terms of Running and Crossfit. One thing (at least) every day. Budget - 5XP £50 weekly budget. Stay under it. Simple. And that's it. I can't pretend that I'll post daily or keep up with everyone here, but I'll try to get on as much as I can. 5 Quote Level 20 Wood Elf Ranger STR: 15 - CON: 21 - CHA: 6 - SAN: 16 - INT: 17 IAgreeWithTank™ "Shit is going down, but I am not." - iatetheyeti Don't say "I don't have enough time", say instead "that's not a priority right now" and see how that makes you feel. Both of my runs should have been 6 miles but were cut short to 5 due to me getting up late. That said I've suddenly gone back to full running volume after quite a lot of time off, so it might not be a bad thing have a couple less miles in week 1. Crossfit has been fun, we did "Cindy" on Wednesday, which is 20 minutes of 5 pullups, 10 pushups and 15 squats. I did 9 rounds Rx, and my arms still hurt from it now! Rehab hasn't happened at all. I am at least tracking it so when I get five minutes with a clear head I might just remember to do it. Budget is fine, although I'm going to see the rugby in London tomorrow so I imagine that will blow it. 1 Quote Level 20 Wood Elf Ranger STR: 15 - CON: 21 - CHA: 6 - SAN: 16 - INT: 17 IAgreeWithTank™ "Shit is going down, but I am not." - iatetheyeti Don't say "I don't have enough time", say instead "that's not a priority right now" and see how that makes you feel. Jarric
Stats after Week 1 Workouts - 6/7 Rehab - 0/7 Budget - Blown! I really miss-planned my weekend. Was going to get up early on Saturday, go for my long run, and then that would mean I had plenty of time on Sunday for my short run. What I were going to be a couple of quick drinks with a work friend on Friday night turned into a late and heavy night of much drinking and setting the world to rights. It was good fun and quite therapeutic after a hectic week, but it meant there was no way I was getting up early on Saturday for an 8 mile run. I was even too hungover for a 5k. After all afternoon drinking at the rugby I got a very early night, but it still wasn't enough to drag me out of bed to run the following morning. I did go climbing Sunday morning, which was a lot of fun and got me to 6/7 workouts for the week, but I can't help feeling that missing two runs might not be ideal 8 weeks before a massive race. This morning I had crossfit. It was supposed to be squats but my hip was really hurting me, so I subbed deadlifts instead and managed to hurt my shoulder doing that! I think it's just muscular, but it's still not a happy start to the week. Ah well, things can only get better. 1 Quote Level 20 Wood Elf Ranger STR: 15 - CON: 21 - CHA: 6 - SAN: 16 - INT: 17 IAgreeWithTank™ "Shit is going down, but I am not." - iatetheyeti Don't say "I don't have enough time", say instead "that's not a priority right now" and see how that makes you feel. starpuck
HeyJarric, Just a thought/question. Do you plan in 'excursions' into your budget. If you aren't currently, could you? Like a planned 'eat to maintenance day' but with your money? When special things come up, I think it's terrible for us to put guilt on them because they don't fit into the 100% plan of perfection. I'm still working on getting this trick mastered, but when it does work it feels SO GOOD. Let's pinky promise for some week two improvement, lordy knows I can only get better from where my week one was, lol! 2 Quote Level 83 ~*~ Ranger Deviant Art Gallery || YouTube Channel Current Challenge "It is difficult. So the way I set my budget goal at the moment is to take out £50 in cash on a Monday, and try and make it last the week. That's for spending on leisure stuff, so ignoring bill, groceries and petrol. I also wrote out a monthly budget about 18 months ago, and that had a monthly spending money budget of something like £280, which does allow me a bit more flexibility than the weekly goal. The question is, how do I set a weekly budgeting goal but still allow for one-off splurges? And yes, promise to have a better week two if you do too! Jarric
Week 2 so far: Workouts - 4/4 (10/11 total) Rehab - 0/4 (0/11 total) Budget - > £20 remaining Tuesday I ran. It was a good run, 4x1mi interval with 2 minutes slow in between. 5 miles in total. Wednesday I had Crossfit, and we were doing handstand walks and l-sit pullups. I got a decent number of l-sit pullups, and my handstand walks are coming on such a long way. I was able to get a few steps practising towards a wall and it felt good. Went for a couple of attempts across the gym and that felt good too, I event got a couple of feet on one try! Then on the last attempt I fell off the top of the handstand and landed heavily on my shoulder. It hurt all day yesterday and still hurts now. It is getting better, I just hope I'll be able to use it by tomorrow for Crossfit, or at least the weekend. This morning I ran. It felt really tough, breathing was hard, shoulder hurting was offputting. Still, I got out and got 6 miles done. In other news, I'm feeling amazingly positive about work at the moment. Given that there's tons to do as it's the last couple of days of the financial year, I feel surprisingly chilled and positive (generally I love my job, but this is always a really tough week). 2 Quote Level 20 Wood Elf Ranger STR: 15 - CON: 21 - CHA: 6 - SAN: 16 - INT: 17 IAgreeWithTank™ "Shit is going down, but I am not." - iatetheyeti Don't say "I don't have enough time", say instead "that's not a priority right now" and see how that makes you feel. That's always a tough one. Can you get an estimate on how often you have a splurge event per month? And how much is spent on those splurge events? Then evaluate if you want to trim that down or if you think it's where it needs to be. Then I'd say, take whatever that amount is, say, $200 -- and use it on your splurges. If you have a special event come up that should run $80, and you spend $140, that leaves just $60 for the other one. It might also help you stem the oversplurge before it happens if you know you want to save up for the second one. Also - if the money you set aside for it is really extra and okay for just splurges - allow roll over into the next month. Then if you end up being mindful for a month on all the one offs, you might have bonus for a bigger splurge on a future event! Take care of that shoulder friend. I'd have recommended not running hah - when I was in rehab for my shoulder issue, my PT said absolutely no running- it is super hard on the shoulder. 1 Quote Level 83 ~*~ Ranger Deviant Art Gallery || YouTube Channel Current Challenge "It is difficult. That's a good plan actually; I could have a weekly budget like a do now, and a separate monthly splurge pot for bigger events. I need to sit down and write a new budget at some point this challenge, so I will probably try and factor that in, thanks! ===== The shoulder is definitely getting better. @Starpuck if you are recommending not running you probably won't want to hear that I went to Crossfit this morning! We did a weird barbell row variation which felt fine, ring dips I couldn't do at all as it hurt too much so I did them banded instead, and overhead yoke carry which felt ok but I did keep it light-ish. Hoping for more improvement by tomorrow morning as I'm planning on taking part in a bouldering competition and I certainly don't feel I'll be able to climb very much right now. And on Sunday I'm meeting some lovely nerds at an OCR training place, so I want to be on form for that. Other stuff is going ok, last working day of the financial year today so I'm looking forward to an end to that mad rush. Haven't tried dips since so I'm hoping they won't come up at Crossfit for another few days. On 4/1/2019 at 3:30 PM, Starpuck said: Jarric!!! When things hurt they require healing! LOL. Jarric
Where are we? When are we? Week 3ish I guess? Things are going ok. I've got in most of my runs, although they're feeling pretty rough at the moment as hayfever starts to flare up. Crossfit is happening and I'm working round the shoulder ok - it's not healed yet but it's a bit better every day. I went to the hospital last night to see a surgeon about my hip. He seems to think that it's just inflammation of the IT band rather than anything more serious as we previously thought. I'm hoping he's right, but I've got an MRI next week to find out either way. That's faintly terrifying, but I need to find our what's going on. Rehab is off the table now until I get the results of the MRI. Budget needs some work... 1 1 Quote Level 20 Wood Elf Ranger STR: 15 - CON: 21 - CHA: 6 - SAN: 16 - INT: 17 IAgreeWithTank™ "Shit is going down, but I am not." - iatetheyeti Don't say "I don't have enough time", say instead "that's not a priority right now" and see how that makes you feel. I hope you're able to start putting yourself back together and feeling less sore and hayfevered. Keep us posted on the MRI - hoping for the best!
