With the end of this challenge coinciding with finals, this seemed like appropriate inspiration. Goals forthcoming...

Ok, got some goals based loosely on the lyrics:

”I broke free on a Saturday morning”

(a.k.a. weekend long runs)

I want to add distance this challenge. Last challenge I went from irregular 2-mile runs to running 2-3 times a week, once up to 3 miles in that time. I’ll run at least three times per week, increasing distance along the way. Mileage goal breakdown:

Week 1: 2-2-3

Week 2: 2-2-4

Week 3: 3-2-4

Week 4: 3-2-5

“There will be feasting and dancing in Jerusalem next year”

(a.k.a. going vegetarian)

I’ve spent years dithering about going vegetarian. I think there are so many compelling reasons for it, especially as regards the environment. After picking up “Eating Animals” a few weeks ago, I’ve decided to just go for it. I want to be practical, so I’m going to plan on easing into it.

Week 1: Vegetarian breakfasts and lunches

Week 2: Veg B&L, plus 3 vegetarian dinners

Week 3: Veg B&L, plus 5 vegetarian dinners

Week 4: Full Veg when I control the menu (I’m exempting parties until I figure out the dynamics of being consistently vegetarian in social settings.)

“Locking eyes, holding hands”

(a.k.a. practice mindful presence)

This is building off my last challenge’s goal of reducing screen time. I’m going to keep my screen time below 30 minutes per day and replace that time with social interactions, reading, music or just plain thinking and daydreaming.

Nice goals! I have sometimes the same feeling about going vegetarian, but I really like the taste and structure of meat. I'm now slowly but surely planning more vegetarian meals, currently around 2-3 per week. Have you thought about what you will use to replace the meat, to make sure you still get your vitamins & minerals?

Good luck with the challenge!

Day  1.1:

- Lots of rain here in MA yesterday, so no runs for me yet.

- Flipped meals yesterday and had a non-veg lunch, but then a veg dinner (sesame-peanut soba noodles w/ carrots, cucumbers, and cilantro

- Didn't hit the screen-time goal, but significantly reduced my total time to 1 hr 13 min, down from 2+ hours on average the week  before.

My challenge with meat isn't so much that I really like it. I actually don't eat red meat all that often to begin with, mostly chicken. For me, it's that meat is such an easy default option that I find it hard to be thoughtful enough to avoid it.

I think I'll be leaning heavily on legumes and dark leafy greens for a lot of my nutritional needs. Also, since I'm not looking to go vegan, I'll still have eggs and dairy available.

Day 1.2

- still no running

- I had lunch and dinner events for school on Tuesday: lunch didn’t have a veg option, mindlessly ordered shrimp tacos for dinner

- Screen time was 1 hr 56 mins

Day 1.3

- Nope, couldn’t get out of bed for the life of me yesterday morning

- Vegan curry for lunch, yay!

- 2 hrs 13 minutes, not great

Days 1.4 & 1.5

- Ran yesterday for 2 miles, felt really good. Planning to do 2 tomorrow and 3 sunday

- Held steady for both lunches (veggies and rice Thurs, cheese enchiladas today). Even got in a Veg dinner last night. (Cheese pizza). Not the healthiest choices, so I’m going to be more intentional about that next week.

- Screen time has been high these two days. I’ve found myself in a bit of a social funk, and I notice I rely heavily on my phone when that happens.

Small steps are the key, well done on having more vega lunches these days :).

Do you have any plans what to do instead of doing phone-stuff when you're in a social funk?
