The first day of the rest of my life

The Shadow

Recommended Posts

Hi guys! This will be my first challenge with the assassins (Previously a warrior). As I journeyed with the warriors, I both lost weight and gained some muscle, and that has allowed me to enjoy a variety of new activities, such as running.  My quests this time around include more of a focus on exploring what I can do now that I've slimmed down a little. (Thanks Steve!)

My quests are

1.  Learn to do the basic roll in parkour. I feel that this knowledge could be super helpful in parts of my life other than parkour. (And it looks cool)

2. Run for 5 minutes a day. Where I stand now, I can't run for very long, so I'll be taking plenty of breaks. By the end of this challenge, I hope to be able to run for at LEAST 5 minutes straight. That might not sound like much to you, but it would mean a lot to me.

3. Learn to do a flip on a trampoline. I grew up with siblings doing flips on the trampoline, without ever having the courage to do it myself. Now my little brother (7 years old) can do a pretty decent flip, and I feel ridiculous for letting fear stop me from learning. If he can do it, so can I.

4. Become an Eagle Scout. I only need two more merit badges.

These might seem like easy goals to a few of you, but I feel that being able to accomplish these goals would be a major milestone in my fitness journey. I would appreciate feedback, and I would also appreciate if people could post some resources relevant to these goals. (Example: Video that helped THEM learn to roll in parkour).

Thanks for taking the time to read.

Running every day sounds like kind of a lot to me! You may want to do every other day or something so that your body can adjust to the increased load. :)

Where are you working on learning how to flip? Is that on a trampoline? Learning how to roll first will definitely help with that.

Thanks for the feedback. I edited my post for some clarification. I don't think that running for just 5 minutes a day will hurt very much, especially at my slow pace. :)

Will you be taking a parkour class? As with most physical activities there is a technique involved and it's worth learning how to do it correctly.

I feel you on the running (or anything cardio based). When I started training for a 5k (about a million years ago) I followed a 'routine' of 1 minute running followed by 1 minute walking, this alternated until I reached my desired time, each week I increased the running time and eventually started to decrease the walking time. I found it effective and manageable.

Good luck!

Hi there! I wasn't aware there were such things as parkour classes.  I will most certainly look into those. Can you give me a ballpark estimate as to how much they cost?

those are great goals! I never had a trampoline growing up so im def afraid of doing those flips too, no worries!

i signed up to do a 5k i think in august. I've never run more than a mile in my life. i made excuses so i didn't have to do the mile run in elementary school. but i'm trying to work on my endurance, so i'll be cheering you on!

That's awesome! Good luck with your 5K. How much progress have you made with endurance?

Nice goals!! As said above, are you going to building up to the 5min or just doing 5 min a day?

(eg are you doing a C25K or just going out to run for as long as you can?)

As for the Parkour, the links to my two fave videos are below, but a class would be cool, and would help you learn even more.

Trampoline flips!!!!  I grew up with a trampoline and learned to flip (which later led me to joining our high school diving team).  It has been many, many years since then without any trampoline flips but I am getting back into them now.  I totally hear you about the fear, but you can do it!

Check out Pigmie and RonnieStreetStunts on youtube.  Those two are my go-to peeps for trampoline/parkour tutorials

I stopped by for the discussion about parkour rolls.  I love the notion that I have good body control and balance and learning how to roll will hopefully feel like even if I fall I can still do something about it :)  Nice job on working yourself so close to Eagle Scout level.  Do you have any idea how much work or time is left for you to finish it out?

I assume these two merit badges will take a fair bit of time and effort.  I'm well out of scout years and forget what they can entail.  I just know that Eagle Scout requires a lot of commitment.  I hope you will keep us posted both on your more immediate running goals- no worries, I'm sure you can handle that one- and your scouting.  Keep up the good work!

I learnt the parkour roll from Ryan Doyle's tutorial. But I find that Amos Rendao's tutorials are more in-depth:

Beginner Roll Tutorial Part 2

Intermediate Roll Tutorial Part 1

Thanks. I watched the Beginner Roll Tutorial Part 1 and it really helped me with a few things I'd struggled with, such as hand position.

Also following for the running motivation. :)

I ran for 5 min last night. I needed 749 steps and decided to just go run them. Since my family owns about 5 acres that we farm flowers on, I used the farm and fields to practice a little parkour, and I managed to implement the roll I've been working on twice. I discovered that running at night (Or close to it) Is really energizing due to the change of scene, and also due to it being cool and rather mysterious.
