GoodDoug goes hunting dinosaurs, again

Recommended Posts

Bisuto the beastmaster of the enemy extended his power, finding the large dinosaurs he had been raising and training. He entered their small minds and tried to determine their readiness for battle. His master had told him to get them ready, they seemed more than ready. His master was scheduled to contact him any moment now to deliver the plan.
Bisuto's master was in charge of the fight on this front. The rebels had made some gains recently, but they were about to be pushed back. Bisuto's master had a history with the half-ogre they were going after, he had foiled his master's attempt at crushing the rebellion. The master had hidden and worked in secret to poison the mind of the half-ogre. But somehow, it had shaken off the subtle spell and was coming back to help the rebel scum. Bisuto also knew that this half-ogre had been responsible for taking out his first batch of T. rex dinosaurs a few years ago. This new litter of T. rexes would at least draw the half-ogre out before he was completely ready. If Bisuto's T. rexes didn't kill this half-ogre, then they would at least draw him out and make him vulnerable.
The candle at Bisuto's side suddenly flared green, "Master, tell me your plan."

The grizzled old Ranger Guild leader couldn't wait any longer. The reports in the field of the giant dinosaurs taking out fortified positions meant he had little time to wait for some half fit half-ogre to get ready. He went into the warehouse, finding it mostly empty but for Ben, the quartermaster for this ranger guild hall. "Hail Ben, where can I find GoodDoug?"
Ben came out from behind the desk he was sitting at and sighed, "Sending him to the front lines?"
"Have to, something's come up that he has the expertise on." The old ranger paused, then continued, "Is he ready?"
Ben gave a crooked smile, "I don't think it matters whether he is ready, but yes, he is as ready as we can make him here."

The guild leader found GoodDoug outside the barracks sharpening his great sword, his bags packed. The half-ogre looked up, "I heard the enemy is using big dinosaurs, probably T. rexes."
"You heard right, so you know why I'm here?"
GoodDoug smiled, "Yep, just give me all the intel you have and I'll get right on it. It'll be like old times."
The guild leader frowned, arms crossed, "No, it won't be. You are not in the same shape you were last time. You will need to take it at a pace you can handle, but still push hard enough that more of our outposts aren't overrun. We stand to lose a lot of the ground we took."
GoodDoug's grin sobered. He looked straight into the guild leaders eyes and said, "I will do my best."
"That is all we can ask of you."

See my last dinosaur related challenge here

This one will be about chasing down each T. rex (running) and then moving the carcass (weights in the gym) as well as eating much of the T. rex (eating more protein). To keep from getting caught, I will need to do make sure I am staying flexible as well as maintaining and increasing my acrobatics skills (yoga and handstands). As well, I need to keep in touch with my fellow rebels, getting their help when I need it (keeping up with NF forums).

Also, since I need help this challenge, anyone that wants to chime in with their story of the rebellion and fighting the mighty T. rex, please feel free to lend a hand. And if anyone has some recipes using dinosaur, I'd love to hear them.

I'm going to break each section into "New thing," "Maintenance," and "End goal" as I have a lot of things I want to maintain. And I think having the end goal there is a reminder of why I am doing these things.

Lastly, at the very end of the challenge we are heading to Europe. My daughter's soccer team is going to play some friendlies and to watch the Women's World Cup.

Exercise:
New thing - Running twice a week
Even if it is super slow, or not for very long or lots of walking with the running, just get it done.
Maintenance - Gym twice a week, fill move ring
As in my last T. rex related challenge, will measure weight moved per week. Aim for 8-12 tons per week.
End goal - Get fit, run 5K non-stop

Diet:
New thing - More protein
100g of protein per day. Trying to hit it every day, but allowing for some hiccups.
Maintenance - Track every day, limit carbs
LoseIt every day, and limit carbs to 1/3 of total intake... though I will make exception in Paris. I plan on eating my body weight in croissants.
End goal - Look good naked

Flexibility:
New thing - Quick handstand try every day
I want to get into the habit of at least kicking up once a day
Maintenance - Yoga once a week, foam rolling once a week
I should make it more than once a week, but I'm trying to work in some other things when I would normally do yoga, including writing.
End goal - Not be so damned sore all the time

Creativity:
New thing - Write three days a week
I won't count my NF story in this, but I have started doing some writing and I really like how it feels. Right now, I'm not going to stipulate what kind of writing (journalling, "wisdom" writing, or fiction)
Maintenance - Get into the wood shop, keep designing
I have a few things I've designed enough that now it is time to get into the shop and start making some more.
End goal - Get good at writing and woodworking and drawing

Accountability:
New thing - Bullet Journal
Just started this, and am trying to find my groove. I like how it feels, and I like the creative aspects to it. I'll have to figure out how to put my goals into the journal.
Maintenance - Tracking and stay on Nerd Fitness
Stay the course, I'll work at keeping myself accountable, if you all help me keep accountable
End goal - have a system to keep myself moving forward

For zero week, I am expressly taking a little break from the gym. I did yoga this morning, and did go to the gym on Monday, but I'm trying to do a little recovery this week. Also, it is my birthday on Friday and I want to be able to enjoy some birthday cake, so trying to take it chill.

Nice goals!   I am right there with you on the running.    I gotta get past the 'must run non stop for 3 miles to call it a run!'.      Just get out there and get the steps in, regardless of how fast I get them, right?  Right!

Still figuring it out. Trying to start simply and add as I need things. I have a Monthly list, and then daily journal/to-do. I also made a quick checklist for daily habit items, but I think I want to change that as it doesn't feel right. I'm trying to get into a groove with it, then I'll start adding some other things to it. I like it so far, notes, todos, ideas, and some art.

Quick update, I'll do more tomorrow.

Weekend of zero week was good, ate birthday cake, and also ate good food. Monday was good. Went for a run early in the morning, then wanted to nap the rest of the day. Ate too much for our anniversary dinner, but it was worth it.

Today is shaping out to be good, eating pretty well and went to the gym.

Came up with a cool chart for my bullet journal for the NF challenge. It has colors and everything.

GoodDoug arrived at the outpost. This one was one of the few that hadn't been overrun in the latest rush of the enemy. As he walked in, he mentally took stock of his supplies. He had the big greatsword, his smaller shiny sword and a bunch of spear heads for making spears in the field. He wasn't sure if the spears would help, as they were more for boar hunting. He would rather have ahd some of the ones used for dragons, but this was what was available.
The outpost commander made her way over to where he was wandering, looking the half-ogre up and down. "So, you are the one they sent to deal with the big dinosaur keeping us in these walls?"
"Yes ma'am."
"Call me Commander while you are with us," she then sighed, "While you do whatever it is you do, I'm getting this outpost ready for evacuation. If you can't handle this T. rex and another one comes along, we can't hold this outpost, we will need to fall back." She shook her head, "I haven't been able to send out any more patrols since we lost three last week."
GoodDoug was tired from his hike to the outpost, but he squared his shoulders and asked, "Where was the dinosaur last seen?"

GoodDoug heard the challenge bellow of the beast, it wasn't far off. He picked up the pace and headed for the sound. As he approached, he heard the yells and growls, he rounded the corner to see four cavalry being harassed by a good sized T. rex. It leapt and tripped one of the horses, laming it and spilling the rider. The rider stood and brandished his sword at the beast. GoodDoug took a moment to move to a bit more of a flanking position on the beast and then yelled out his own challenge roar and charged.
A T. rex is generally the largest and scariest predator around, but when something challenges it, it generally turns and runs. It figures it can outrun whatever it is and find another meal pretty quickly. This one did just that, it made a small roar of challenge, and then, when the half-ogre kept coming and sweeping to stay in a flanking position, it turned and ran off through the brush.
GoodDoug paused, "Are you okay?" when they all nodded, he gave a quick salute and gave chase.

He had forgotten how big and scary these beasts were, but it still gave him a little smile. It was good to be back in the field. But he needed to keep after the beast, they were good sprinters, but tired easily. If he could just keep running he could tire the beast enough to get a jump on it.

Doing well so far, this first T. rex isn't the quickest I've come across, nor the biggest, but it is appropriate to what I can handle.
On Monday I started with a bang and got my first run of the challenge in. It wasn't a terrible pace (not where I was last time I chased these dinosaurs) and I felt pretty good once I was done.
Tuesday, I lifted at the gym, this was a medium to large size dinosaur at just over 5.5 tons. If you lift, do the math to figure out how many tons you've moved and it makes you feel like a total badass.
I am changing my lifting program for this challenge. Prior to this I spent three months doing 2 sets of 15 reps for everything I was doing. Trying to build endurance while also getting back into the swing of lifting. Now I am going with 3 sets of 10 reps at a higher weight. It is harder in some ways, and easier in others. But that was just one gym session. Next one is deadlifts, we shall see how that works out.
I did some foam rolling yesterday and will likely do some today before I go running tonight. I forgot to do handstand kickup this morning, but hope to get to it tonight.
Diet has gone well, I did well on Monday even with my anniversary and getting beer and dessert during our nice dinner out. Yesterday I crushed it with the protein and feel good about focussing on macros like I am.
I've written some this morning and want to make sure I am writing even if I don't feel like I have anything to say.

Only a few days in, but it feels good.

The half-ogre was huffing and puffing, but he could tell the dinosaur was starting to get desperate. It wouldn't be long now until the beast turned to face him. He limbered his greatsword and made another jog towards the T. rex when it slowed down. GoodDoug knew to attack from behind or the side to stay out of reach of those massive teeth and strong jaw. He was one of the few people in any of the guilds who knew how to fight these beasts.
He watched the tail, it would usually telegraph the coming swing around to attack. Sure enough, the tail swung to the beast's left which it would then swing around to it's right to bring the head around. GoodDoug tensed and when the head came around he was ready. He dove under the jaws and came up swinging the sword at the beast's neck. It was a good blow, but the beast still had some fight. Tired as he was, it wasn't over.

GoodDoug lunged towards the beast's leg and took another swing. Not a great blow, but the dinosaur was slowed. It swung back around and knocked the half-ogre like a rag doll. Rather than finish the half-ogre off, it roared a challenge, hoping to scare this thing with the big sword away. GoodDoug scrambled back up and charged head on. Generally, charging head on wasn't the smartest thing, as the head was the part with all the teeth. But it had the desired effect, the beast tried to turn and run, but GoodDoug closed the distance and stabbed with his blade into the dinosaur's flank. It stumbled three steps and then fell, breathing its last breath. It was now time to get this meat back to the outpost. He could show everyone there his recipe for beer basted T. rex chops.

Woo, yeah, I do 12 reps at lower weight sometimes to change things up, but otherwise do 5x5.   I like the change of pace doing it that way!   Dropping from 15 to 10 has to feel heavenly!!   Nice job hitting the gate running.

Another quick update:

Did running and foam rolling yesterday evening. Didn't make my Protein target, which I was surprised by - I was too tired to scarf down some eggs after running, I guess. Did some writing and had to do a quick small wood carving for my daughter for a school project. Whipped out something nice in about 15 minutes of work. I forgot how nice it is to carve basswood, after carving cherry this last time, it is so nice to be able to work quickly.

Today I did yoga in the morning, I really needed that. The rest of today is about active rest, walking, maybe some more foam rolling but just being a bit more relaxed today and then I'll try and get to the gym tomorrow.

Food is doing well, I'm almost at my protein target, and hope to get more later.

Super quick update before I run to a meeting:

Lifted today, and did really well with my adjusted program. We'll see how I feel tomorrow.

Food is going well, I'm on track to meet the protein goals, and I figure I've chased down and beaten (and eaten) a smaller 4.25 ton T. rex.

GoodDoug the half ogre breathed heavily, he had just finished carrying in the meat from the second Tyrannosaurus rex back to the outpost. Not everyone was excited at the prospect of dinosaur meat, but they were glad to be safe from the monsters for now. No more had been spotted, but there were reports of a group moving  against the the forces trying to retake an outpost to the East. After he got the scratches on his arm looked at, he would be heading out.

The half-ogre reflected on this last fight. The beast wasn't a big one, and was already tired from chasing the runners from the Scouts guild. But it was quick, quicker than any other he had faced. And he was still a little tired from his last fight. But after a quick back and forth chase, GoodDoug was able to box it into a stream bed.
The beast turned to face the half-ogre once it realized it was trapped, this was the most dangerous time. The beast was cornered, and knew it was fighting for its life. GoodDoug also knew he had to be careful as the stream could make footing precarious. He kept circling, and staying either on high ground or the drier rocks. Waiting for the beast to lunge. His patience paid off as the dinosaur lunged forward two steps, snapping its teeth at the half-ogre, he sidestepped and tried to get a good swing with the sword, but it was a glancing blow, enough for the beast to eel it, but not enough to slow it down.
"Great, now it is scared and angry."
GoodDoug tried to anticipate the next lunge, and his patience again paid off as the beast whipped its head towards him suddenly. The half-ogre Ranger took another swipe, again not landing a telling blow. He danced over to a rock further in the stream, he wouldn't have as many options, but he hoped the T. rex would have a harder time finding footing. The beast turned quickly to follow him and managed to knock into him as he avoided the teeth, sending him sprawling in ankle deep stream water. GoodDoug quickly rolled up and lunged forward as the beast drew back to make another strike. This one was a good hit, the sword bit deep. Not enough to kill it outright, but it was hurt. The beast tried to rear back further to get out of the reach of a second swing of the greatsword. It stumbled in the stream, a combination of the smooth rounded rocks shifting as well as the rushing stream water made its footing falter for a moment. GoodDoug took this opportunity to pounce, driving the sword again into it's flank. The beast thrashed, grazing the half-ogre with it's teeth. GoodDoug stood back and then lunged forward as soon as the beast struggled to get up, one swing, two swings with the greatsword and the beast collapsed.

Week 1 wrap up

Week was great, had out anniversary (24 years) this Monday and had a tournament for my daughter this weekend. Tournament means it is very difficult to maintain diet and exercise, as there is a lot of time spent in the car, or trying to find shade for the girls so they don't get too hot for the games.
I also finally made a workout bag, I had some canvas fabric and some bias tape sitting around, so made a bag I can keep my workout stuff in.

Exercise:
Ran twice, and lifted twice which was my goal. Did yoga once and filled my rings every day except Saturday at the tournament, but really, I did quite a bit of moving and carrying of the bench and tent for the team, so I'm not worried about that day.
A- for the week

Diet:
Tracked every day, made my protein all but two days (one of which was the tournament) but struggled with the carb thing. Stayed under my carb goal only three days last week. I'll have to see if I can focus on that more this week.
B- for the week

Flexibility:
Totally biffed it on the handstand every day thing. Started the first couple of days and then just didn't. Did a bit of foam rolling which helped and did a good long yoga session.
D for the week

Creativity:
I've written quiet a bit this week and feel good about it. I spent a lot of time designing new projects and even whipped up a workout bag and a small wood carving.
A+ for the week

Accountability:
It would be difficult to not have my Bullet Journal next to me while working. It has been a real success so far. Lets see if I can keep it up. It is nice to have something to keep me accountable. It helps me to run and go to the gym. As well, all of the designing and building I've been doing has been because of the journal, and I feel like it has helped me focus at work as well.

Bisuto, the beastmaster of the enemy finally found what he was looking for. Through the hawk's eyes he could see the end of the struggle happening in the stream. Somehow, this half-ogre had killed one his T. rex dinosaurs. He also had a feeling the half-ogre his master wanted dead was responsible for the loss of the other T. rex. Now that he knew where the Ranger was, he would be able to follow him, and help direct the dinosaurs.
Bisuto had a little worry, one of the best tools of their arsenal was these T. rexes, and one of the reasons they were so effective was the terror aspect of fighting them. But somehow, this half-fit half-ogre wasn't afraid.
