Im Back GIF

Hey guys! First off, thanks to @Tanktimus the Encourager for getting @jonfirestar to give me a prompt. I didn't intend on taking a break for this long!

My last challenge was February (!). The last few months have been mega busy with races, meet ups with UK Rangers @jonfirestar @Rhovaniel and @Jarric  for races, D&D, climbing and beer. This month I ran my two longest races of the year: Rat Race Dirty Weekend and Nuclear Oblivion. Dirty Weekend was not a serious race at all and was basically 13 miles of mucking about with a bunch of like-minded nutters. Lots of beer was consumed both before (oops) and after the race and much fun was had.

Oblivion was a different beast entirely. This was a OCR world championship qualifier and the aim was to do 3 laps to qualify. Unfortunately, this wasn't to be. The course was brutal. Without a doubt, it was the hardest OCR I've done to date. A last minute change to the rules of the race meant anyone intending to qualify had to either complete the obstacle or do a penalty (previously the rules were 'an honest attempt on all obstacles'). About three quarters of the way through the first lap I realised that at the speed I was going I wasn't going to make the cut off time for the last lap to manage three laps (and I wouldn't have the energy to do it either) so I surrendered my band so I wouldn't have to do the penalties and could then complete 2 laps. The Hubs and I plodded out the last lap together and although we were both exhausted, we enjoyed ourselves and were happy to pick up our special medals at the end.

I've done a lot of thinking over the last few months and I've decided that I no longer want to do long distance OCR's or running events. I don't enjoy them as much as shorter distances (10-12km) and I definitely don't enjoy training for them. So Oblivion will probably be the last long distance event I do for a while. I've still got a few 10-15km races this year, but I'm going to treat these as 'fun' races, except for OCRWC, which, now I haven't qualified, I'll drop down to the Journey-woman wave.

CROSSFIT WANKER: The Story So Far

The main reason for being quite meh about long distances is, I've fallen out of love with running and in love with CrossFit. The last time I ran a challenge, I had been doing CF for about 2 months and was going twice a week. I've since increased my membership to three times a week. I still intend on running, but my main focus now is speed rather than endurance. I still have a goal of getting a sub 60 10k, which I should be able to get by the end of this year.

CHALLENGE GOALS

1. Get to the end of this damn challenge!

I don't want to disappear without warning again! The main reason I did so was my challenges felt really repetitive and I felt really boring constantly writing 'I did a run' or ' I did some lifting'

TBH, this challenge won't be much different, but instead of putting pressure on myself to update daily or every other day, my minimum aim is a weekly update.

2. CrossFit 3 times a week, obvs

I don't need to say much more. Book in the sessions. Go to the sessions. Try not to die. Job done

3. Run........sometimes

I want - OK, not want, should - run twice a week so I can keep doing 10km races. The plan is to do one tempo or interval session and one long run. To start with 'long run' is anything above 3 miles. I don't intend on doing anything above 8 miles in a long run. The plan is to bring my distance all the way down and build it back up piece by piece.

FIRST!!!

*Edit*

I just had to post that so I didn't get sniped on the first post lol.

I have had a hell of a time doing this myself. My consistency on the boards has been shite at best, but, we all know life can be fickle, so, no ones gonna judge you for it. We're glad you're here! And I'm excited to hear about more Crossfit! :D

You have a much better reason for it than I do though! Glad to have you around as always!

I love the name of this challenge and I'm following even though it's going to make me get Return of The Mack stuck in my head frequently.

It was meant to be more Star Wars related, but now that song is stuck in my head too. Dammit.

Week 0 Wrap-up

Not much to report seeing as I only started the challenge on Friday!

Crossfit: Yep. Went to the early morning Metcon class on Saturday morning.

Spoiler

wpRwJEl.jpg

This had more running than I wanted! I joined Crossfit to do something other than running! And running after 50 thrusters is not fun! But I was paired up with a lovely Scottish lady who didn't take any shit and gave me the push I needed on the last run. It was tough and just what I needed.

I was going to run on Sunday but life got in the way, but at least I got some stuff done that I've been putting off for a while. I don't have any runs planned right now, so I can comfortably take a little break from running if I want to, but I'm going to try to start again this week.

Week 1

No CF yet (that's tonight) but I started off the week with a cheeky Squat and Deadlift session at home with The Hubs. I can still out squat him :P For now anyway! I'm still going to try and do one lifting session at home a week, probably on a Monday night. Because I'm only going to CF three times a week, there's no guarantee that squats and deadlifts and going to be programmed on the days I go. I still want to get a 100kg deadlift (I'm at 96kg - so close!) this year, so I need to do this consistently to make this happen.

Oh your deadlift is amazing. You'll beat 100kg and then some! Of that I have no doubt.

Yes I will! And thanks, I don't see it as amazing. I see it as just short of my goal!

Week 1 - Tuesday

Crossfit 1/3

I didn't think I was going to make it to the class last night thanks to train delays. Thankfully I made it there with 2 mins to spare, and the 6:30 class had overrun and was still going. Watching the 6:30 class kinda made me wish I hadn't made it there :P I saw guys running as I pulled into the parking lot, and then when I walked in, there were a lot of shirtless bros struggling through squat cleans and dying on the floor afterwards.

The full session was 5x5  push press, supersetting 8 ring rows for the strength portion. The WOD was then 3 rounds for time, 400m run, 15 squat cleans and 5 ring muscle ups - which I scaled to 10 ring rows. On the final run, my abs decided to cramp up! I've never had that happen before, it was so painful! I'm not sure how I managed to keep going (slowly) but I did and managed 14 squat cleans in the last round before the time cap. Lots of time was spent lying on the floor afterwards!

When I got home, I was absolutely exhausted so I ate my dinner and went straight to bed. My sleep was really bad though so I don't feel very rested today. Coffee is my best friend right now. Tonight is scheduled to be a run night. eekk!

Week 1 - Weds & Thurs

Running
This didn't happen. Was very tired when I got home so crashed on the sofa and didn't move! The other problem with running in WODS is I think it gets me out of actual running!

Crossfit 2/3

The only running on this one was 3x200m in the warm up! Strength was 5x5 thrusters, which I'm not very good at. Partly because my shoulder strength sucks, partly because I've been having a little problem with my shoulders since starting CF (because my shoulder strength sucks and CF is like, 90% shoulders!) I worked up to 27.5kg but didn't feel comfortable going above that.

The WOD wasn't actually too bad:

42 KB Snatch

21 KB Facing Burpee

30 KB Snatch

15 KB Facing Burpee

18 KB Snatch

9 KB Facing Burpee

I really wanted to do this with a 12kg KB, but I found that too much for the volume so had to do with an 8kg, which felt a little too light. I really wish they had some 10kg bells. :( Anyway, I finished in 10:22.

The big win of the day though; with a little encouragement from some Rangers, I wore shorts to Crossfit. I've been too scared to wear them up till now. I'm so glad I got over that fear - with help from @jonfirestar @Rhovaniel and @Jarric (seriously, thank you guys. I love you all) - because it was so hot in their last night and I felt so comfortable in the shorts.

Now excuse me while I go buy all the shorts
