Becoming Elize, Elvin Fox Ryder

Epic-Elize.jpg.93f46be745c53d62e77f9deb1b3f39e8.jpg

In case some of you hadn't realised, it' just same old me, better/previously known as Elizevdmerwe. I changed my profile name to ElizeElvinFoxRyder.

Why? Why not!? I think it was time.

1. Elize: my name, not going to change, and something to link me to my previous profile name. :)

2. Elvin: we are hoping to emigrate to "The Land of the Long White Cloud" or otherwise known as New Zealand, hopefully by the end of the year (>>> 7 months left). Lord of the Rings was made in NZ, and there are Elves in the story, and the blond character from the game I played (Epistory, explained below) is clever, agile, adventurous and animal crazy like most Elves. And no one would even blink seeing an elf riding a (huge) fox in Lord of the Rings. Also, the story takes place on one big piece of land, or island, while being transported to smaller areas, which might be other islands.

3. Fox Ryder: I started playing the game Epistory (again), where the character (a blond girl riding a three tailed fox) is the muse of an author who is stuck while trying to write his novel. As the muse faces challenges in the game (ugly insects to kill, and puzzles to solve), she develops abilities and saves the day, while always riding her fast, friendly fox. You beat the challenges by typing words that appear on screen. The level difficulty is set according to your typing speed.

HEALTH

I need to stay healthy to manage stress (immigration and daily life in a not so safe country).

  • BIBLE STUDY - sometimes bible study, sometimes a video on YouTube, sometimes just quiet time with Father. Usually in the mornings, but quiet time at night is the greatest.
  • WATER - water or rooibos during the day aiming for +-2Lt/day.
  • SLEEP - go to bed by 21h30.
  • DRY FIRE SHOOTING - this could be working through a safety related video, or actual dry fire practice with my fire arm, at least once a week. No bows and arrows, sorry. I'm a modern elf ;)

scene1.jpg.28b5d3c13e79578bfbddfd4318ef08f4.jpg

STAYING ACTIVE

I'll stick to two days a week strength workout (Tuesdays and Fridays), and try for at least one day a week walking (Wednesday), but hoping for two as well (Thursdays too). I'll just take it slow with pull ups and push ups, as I've managed to pull a muscle or something in my right shoulder. It's been a real pain/nuisance since last week.

  • Joint Circles (warm up)
  • Rev.Pull Ups (try for 10x)
  • Goblet Squat (10x15kg)
  • Lunges (10x8kg)
  • Full Push Ups (10x)
  • Knee Push Ups (hands diamond for tricep focus - 10x)
  • Scissors with legs (core - 30x)
  • Leg lifts (core - 2x10)
  • Stretches

THE PLAN...COUNTDOWN - 8months to go -

Things that need to get done this month:

  • Finances (dailies and monthlies) - I'm a bit behind on monthlies again.
  • Titre tests for pets - tests to see whether the pets' rabies vaccines took.
  • Certified copies of documentation - needs to be certified by someone in authority, other than South African police or postal services. They don't have credibility in NZ any more.
  • Pet CVs - just get it written up and done for when we need to apply for accommodation that side.
  • Proof of Character - by police. To show you don't have a criminal record in your country of origin.
  • Brandt hip exam - x-rays and letter from specialist.
  • House repairs - paint bathroom, and varnish wooden furniture in kitchen.

We'll also be visiting Sabie end of June.

I like the new username!

Lol, stubborn you are, but I have to admit I can't imagine a challenge without my little brother's support. But as long as you keep in mind, I support you also, even if it means giving you time off.

Thanks about the username. I thought it's about time, but I couldn't think of something fun, yet still me. I think she and I can go on many adventures in the future :D .

Well... Brandt first has to get a job that side. We won't take a chance and just go over with no job/income security. We haven't told family yet, so I don't mention it on Fb yet.

Thanks! Our first adventure is next week. I've signed up for 3 self defense lessons for the boys and I.

---------------------------------------------

As I mentioned above, I signed the boys and myself up for 3 self defense lessons. A couple in our neighbourhood runs classes for adults and children, and have offered a special session for our neighbourhood. Our lessons are next Thursday morning, 6 June. I'm equally excited and nervous.

Our annual city Royal Show started this past weekend. This coming weekend there will be a carting race on both Saturday and Sunday, and Brandt will help to marshal. He might get some free entrance tickets. The boys and I will try to attend to support him for a change. We haven't gone to the show in about three years.

I've also reached my wits' end w.r.t. Rocco's eczema. We've tried cutting out gluten, cut down on milk, but it just pops up every now and again (at least once/twice a month), and looks bad. I need a referral from our GP (homeopath) for specific allergy/sensitivity tests. The sister I spoke to at the laboratory is very sure that the tests will pick up something if they test for it, but what to test for is the question.

And I managed to do the strength workout this morning. My shoulder was sore for an hour or two afterwards, but then sorted itself out. Not sore or stiff anymore. I could even carry a heavy packet.

I took a self defense class and did a Krav Maga with my daughter. It was a rush. Really gets the adrenaline going.

Brandt has shown me some moves at one stage, which the boys and I practiced quite a lot ... at that stage. It's been a while. I also looked up 5 most classical moves that a woman (and kids) can learn to defend themselves and those were from the Krav Maga 'bundle' of moves as well. When I told the boys that I've registered to join this class, they were all eager, and promptly showed me what to do when someone grabs you around the throat from behind! So they actually remember some things, and have practiced it again now :D We'll see how next week goes. A part of me hopes that I feel comfortable enough to maybe make it a regular thing, as this couple has advertised with the home school community as well. I'll have a look at regular prices when she sends me the email.

Welcome and glad you found me :D As long as you stand ready with a huge can of bug spray, this fantasy land won't catch us unawares. I went looking for a new challenge yesterday, but didn't see one. Are you continuing on your old one, or should I put my glasses on this time and search for a new challenge again? Hopefully four eyes are better than two. :D

DEAR DIARY...

Spoiler

Things are quiet-ish on the job hunting front. Brandt has applied for three Delphi positions and received a reply from only one's recruitment agent. He also received a non-committal general message from the job in Petone (Wellington), saying they'll only send out specific replies to those applicants they are really interested in. That was now two weeks after he had applied. He seems a bit down. I know both of us thought that as soon as he applied for a position, he would be offered it, due to his experience, although I warned him that it might not be that easy for him/us, just because that was how it worked out for the three friends/colleagues who have applied and are busy emigrating, or have just emigrated.

I also pointed out to him that setting his Linked In profile to "casually looking" instead of "actively looking and applying for positions" might be shooting himself in the foot in the New Zealand market, but he says he'll rather be careful, because the bosses at his one contract are very jumpy. They basically told the office manager that if they think they might loose someone permanently, they'll rather end the contract and look for someone else, so they aren't left in the lurch! Those are the people who updated his contract beginning of this year to be very negative for him, while positive for them (for all the employees on contracts in the office), should he end his contract to join another company. Brandt refused to sign the new contract as is, after getting legal advice, so he isn't sure where he stands with the owners.

On the other hand, since he changed his LinkedIn profile to "casually looking" (I don't know the precise terminology), he has received three offers within South Africa. The last one was last night from someone from Amazon in America! They asked whether he would be interested in working permanently at their offices in Cape Town, and sent him links to the project. Brandt doesn't really want to move around within South Africa. It won't really change anything other than temporarily being a bit safer, maybe. Won't change any of the racial working laws or educational laws the government is changing and trying to implement, which are the main reasons we decided to try to emigrate.

He said he is aiming to tell his mom about our plans when we visit her end of June, but he was hoping that he'd have definite news like he is on the short list, or he has options to choose from, so that it doesn't look like such a gamble. Or that he doesn't have any uncertainty about the move. He asked me to sit with him tonight while he fills in the questionnaire that the recruitment agent has sent him. Hopefully something will come of that.

Anyway... he has been looking at costs to go over to NZ for maybe a month (interviews, applying directly, etc.), but it is pretty expensive. Will basically take a month's salary, and if he is there, he won't be able to work, or not as much as he usually does, so that would limit the next month's income considerably, which means we would have to borrow money to get through, which increases our debt, and lowers the money we have available to pay actual emigration costs, should that happen! And he would prefer if the boys and I go with him, which I told him we just can't do, as much as we would love it! We have to minimise expenses as much as possible.

This is really going to test our faith and patience.

We had a bit of a scare this morning. Two police vans pulled up in front of the house on the right hand corner of the street, across from us. Long story short, there had been some burglaries in the area and city centre, the last one yesterday, specifically where a white Mercedes Benz (they didn't know the model and they didn't have a registration nr.) with a missing fuel cap was the get away vehicle. And of course right in front of this house across the street was a MB, apparently with a missing fuel cap. We of course only found out why this whole situation had unfolded after the guy in the house was taken away. The neighbour across the street from him (we live on the T-junction, looking down that street), had heard of a MB and called it in when she saw this vehicle.

So, two police vans, with flashing lights, blocking the street, while two police officers huddled behind the house's brick garden wall, shotgun and pistol drawn. The boys and I decided to rather be safe than sorry. We called the dogs into the house, locked the gates, and went to my bedroom. The boys hid next to the wall, below the window (because they were curious, and it wasn't unsafe yet), while I stood there with my fire arm at my side looking out. We discussed where the boys should hide if I said it was necessary. Luckily after about 15min. of calling to and thro between the police and the person inside the house, the latter came out holding something like his wallet in his one hand. They searched him, and obviously asked him questions, pointing at the MB. A lot of gesturing and then promptly the police put their weapons away, took out notebooks, started writing furiously and got the man in one of the vans (as passenger). They went off, supposedly to the police station, and someone drove the MB after them.

Then while I was waiting for the boys at Lego, I got a message on the neighbourhood group saying that police had apprehended two robbery suspects for multiple robberies in and around city centre and the neighbourhoods. That was a lot closer than all the scary burglaries have been, and a lot scarier than having someone running through the garden at night. I think it was more real. At least the boys and I got to go through our safety plans again.

And of course the cherry on the cake was that for most of the morning we (couple neighbourhoods and part of CBD) didn't have electricity again, as those electricity boxes, or mains decided to melt from over-usage this morning. When we got back from Lego the electricity was luckily back on, thus why I'm able to share our "adventure" of this morning with you.

well, even in THIS magical land you seem to have already picked up a Quite a reputation!

I was done at the village pub talking to a few odd assortment of creatures and while they think you are pretty as a picture, they say there's few that dare to mess with you.

ofc, this is generally a good THING!  as clearly vagabonds and thieves stay clear; but as your saying, sometimes when things do happen they are very determined goons indeed.  so we will proceed warily and I promise to spray bug spray in their eyes or do comic, distracting thing whilest you dismember them, ok?

anyways; my journey minus any hypothetical voyages in fantastical lands is here:

you remind me that it is FUN to dip into analogy and metaphor sometimes.  I will consider doing that.

I will say this of my current adventure:  while I'm not picturing myself in magical lands I'm all out of sorts with the flowers here.  I hope that your process of finding new plants and animals (and a SAFER way of life), seem easier than what is happening now.  Job uncertainty is indeed a heavy burden.

I was quite impressed with how the whole situation went. A part of me was scared they'll either start shooting or that the person in the house will start running, and come at our property, although I think the linked fence should be a deterrent with armed police chacing him. From some messages later on it does seem that the guy had at least something to do with the robberies, so it's good that the police were on top of the situation.

Thanks for the prayers! I think if he should receive a job offer from that side (Seattle/America), Brandt would definitely consider it. And Seattle is Coffee Town, so an extra incentive for us :D

Winter has really hit us now, especially in the evenings. The monkeys are testimony that there aren't food in the forest, so they are stuffing themselves with pineapple-guavas (in New Zealand they are called Feijoas - see picture), naartjies, avo's and waterberries, from our garden.

Feijoas:

We can now luckily stop mowing all together. I went on a Look-See, and these are the winter flowers we have growing in the garden at the moment:

Yes, it turned out under control. As @Elastigirl also pointed out, the police managed to handle that well, which boosts the little confidence we have in them.

I felt that I would be able to react in time, should the paw-paw strike the fan, but obviously am very glad that I didn't have to. My prayer still is, that I have it, and I am able to act should it be necessary, but please God continue Your protection over us, so it isn't necessary to act.

Is that a clip from the new John Wick? Brandt and I both want to practice the angled, one-handed grip, or now better known as the John Wick grip :D . Our club shoot precision shooting always start off with one handed pistol shoot, weak hand first, then strong hand, at short distance (5m or 5yards). That is the best situation to use it in, and is better for your wrist, if your hand is unsupported. Unfortunately we had to miss the last club shoot, and we are going to miss the next one, when we go to Sabie :(

WEEK 1 SUMMARY

HEALTH

  • BIBLE/QUIET TIME - Some mornings with at least 5 min. just to say a prayer or enjoy the quiet. Sometimes I took that 5 min. during the day.
  • WATER - drank rooibos more frequently, but struggling with water due to cooler weather. Also don't want hot/warm rooibos so much. At least got 4 days where I drank 1Lt during the day.
  • SLEEP - not too bad. 4 nights in bed by 21h30-21h35. But nothing earlier.
  • DRY FIRE SHOOTING - Some safety videos, but no actual dry fire with my personal fire arm. Did buy an old game called Reload, which takes you from pistol shooting (inside and outside training ranges), right through to military fire arms of high velocity. I love how it anticipates the shaking of the fire arm when standing up, and that you have to press the space bar to hold your breath in the game, which is what you do in real life to compensate for that movement. I found myself instinctively holding my breath in real life too :D.So some dry fire training in that regard took place. But I'm no where as good and accurate in real life as I am in the game. But it does help with getting your eye on target faster, and instead of real recoil, you have muzzle movement after the shot which you have to compensate for, as in real life.

STAYING ACTIVE

A win! Two workout sessions (Tuesday and Friday), and I had to really motivate myself to start and get it done. And a short walk with the dogs outside the botanical gardens. On their leashes, training both dogs and boys to walk on leashes with each other. You get the idea, even if my words fall short.

For reverse pull ups, I decided to stand on a chair, then hold on to the bar, get off the chair, and try to hang in the 'up' position of pull up/chin up for 5 counts. On Tuesday I managed 4, on Friday 5, but Friday I did one pull up hands position, followed by chin up hands, pull up hands, etc. chin up is much easier than pull up.

THE PLAN...COUNTDOWN - 8months to go -

Things that need to get done this month:

  • Finances (dailies and monthlies) - Monthlies done! Totally up to date. Will do budget and dailies on Monday after all our deductions have gone off this weekend.
  • Titre tests for pets - Need to arrange for this and maybe next week. Cat also needs deworming and external parasites. He doesn't have any, but I'd rather just keep up and make sure them critters don't get any opportunity. Dogs also need deworming. I always do that every 6 months.
  • Certified copies of documentation - Can wait till next week.
  • Pet CVs - Can start on this for now.
  • Proof of Character - by police. Need to phone the police contact we've been given, and make an appointment.
  • Brandt hip exam - Can wait till next week, or week after.
  • House repairs - I'll ask Eric to wash and sand down the bathroom walls and ceiling tomorrow. Then I can wipe everything just down again by Friday, and paint next weekend. Going to use the same colours that I used for our bedroom, which is also a better paint. I still have enough of everything left.

Not a lot of emotional upheaval, except that the stress and uncertainty of our situation is starting to get to Brandt. He is moody and short at times, but as I understand what might be the underlying cause I asked him how he was feeling about this and that, and has he heard from this person or that, and he opened up some. He was in a much better mood after that.

Got stomach cramps on Saturday from eating gluten again. First time in 4 days that I had bread, and it got to me, I think. But then had a roll later that day and nothing happened, so I'm not sure. Also... the homeopath/GP has written us a referral note so the boys can have allergy tests done. He said we'll start with gluten and all the common allergens, and work our way up from there to once and for all sort out what is causing Rocco's eczema, but also going to have it done for Adam, as he sometimes becomes very nauseous. But I think that is sugar or preservative related, not gluten anymore.

And... I decided to cancel Rocco's Thursday sport. The other parents in the group live on the side of town where the sport is held. I don't. I have to drive across the city. For the past couple of months I've struggled to get him to sport, either because I had something on (like home affairs or such), or had to sit for long times at robots or take huge circle routes because of either protests or road works. And as I've mentioned before, my stress and aggression levels have been climbing. Now they have closed even more roads, and we've just had two taxi riots (protests but they destroy and damage so much property, and throw rocks, etc. at people/cars) this last week, that I've decided it isn't worth it. From now on, we'll load the dogs in the car and go walking in/outside the Bot.gardens which is 1.5km away from us. Or on the odd occasion I'll take the boys (without the dogs) to the trampoline place. I thought about walking down to the Bot.gardens with the dogs, but there are too many "guys roaming", and stray dogs in the streets, and really angry dogs behind fences, which scared our two young dogs last time. Well the angry dogs scared our dogs, and the boys. I'm just not up to trying to defend the boys, the dogs and myself against any kind of attacker, although the two legged ones would probably think twice with us having two dogs with us, even small dogs.

On the danger situation. My friend Francoisana has gone to visit her mom and was due back on the bus sometime either today or tomorrow, if I'm not mistaken. I just let her know that we were warned about more truck driver riots that have started this morning in a couple places along the N3 highway, just past our city, down to Durban. I haven't heard from her yet, but I really hope she was able to change her bus tickets. It's going a bit wild here, but we are safe for the most part.

Lastly... we did not join Brandt at the Royal show. He's fine with it, as he wouldn't have been able to get away from his marshaling position anyway. At least they are buying them lunch and something to drink. I packed him something to eat both yesterday and today though. Our neighbour's twins are also on their way to play with Rocco just now, so I have to spark and get things sorted this side!

Hope the rest of your Sunday is a peaceful, restful one.

Well you certainly had a strong 1st week for your challenge. The chin-up progress looks good!

Thanks!

I’m glad you have the dogs and are being cautious. Im sure you and Brandt are so ready to move. Glad you have each other during this stressful time.

Things have quieted down again in our suburb. No attempted break ins over the weekend, and we've let the dogs out every night, when they barked. Which had been every night. But the last two nights were because of a lone bull that came over from the other side of the mountain to sleep on the grass outside our property, and eat leaves from the broken branch in the morning, on our neighbour's grass. :D So no nightly wanderers on our property. Free mowing service :D

We are very ready to move. Brandt and his colleague will go to the butchery to buy biltong and the dogs' meat today (I hope), so I don't have to travel close to the roads blocked by the truck driver protests. Then I'll just fetch the meat from his office later today.

Brandt and I looked at houses in NZ again Saturday night, looked at what are in which areas, etc. He is of course looking for car racing tracks, and only finding horse race tracks :D We joked around a bit, with some silly comments and dreams, saying if we lived there, he'll do that or that, and we'll do this or such thing. It was nice. I can almost safely say that if we do one day move to NZ, we'll definitely want to do a lot of those hikes! Remember the signal fires that were lit in LOTR? From that white castle to the horse riding village/kingdom? (Yeah, not nerd enough to remember the names, so sorry). There is a week long survival hike that you can do over that mountain ridge! Well, you can do shorter day hikes too, or hike from one side of the mountain to the other side. Not to mention the Hobbit tours, etc. Oh well, we have dreams to help us keep faith that we can one day move.

That sounds amazing!  I want to do a Game of Thrones tour in Belfast one day and a Harry Potter tour in either Edinburgh or London.  Dreams are good to have!

Wow, Elise, I haven't followed your thread for a few months, and the safety situation seems to have gotten much worse. I'm sorry to hear that and glad that you are actively looking to move. That night with the police catching the robber near your house sounded incredibly scary, but I was very impressed by your preparation and thoughtful plan. Stay safe and strong!

There are so many beautiful places all over this beautiful earth of ours. I think the inspiration for the glowing animals and plants in the night, in the Avatar movie, came from one cave they have in NZ where they have glowing worms! I think there are so many amazing things to see all over the world.

Oh, I wanted to follow your thread the other day, then got side tracked at home, and clean forgot. So sorry. :(

Things are politically calmer, to some extend (except for the taxis and truck drivers protesting), while normal crime has gone up, especially after the national elections in May. I think other places in the country are not as volatile though.

The police coming to our neighbour's house was unfortunately during the day time. More things seem to happen during the day again. Like yesterday ... three burglaries between 12h00 and 5pm! And one huge blow up of tempers on the community whatsapp group. We really don't need to watch any soapies on TV! Got it all right here, unfortunately. One lady called another lady a racist for describing a man by skin colour. He is a known petty thief who was walking in the street, looking into properties. Lady1 saw him through her window, and notified the community that he was around, giving his skin colour, full description of the clothes he was wearing, backpack, etc. Lady2 was offended by the description including his skin colour and said it was racist and lady1 should appologise. Long story short, it took one the policemen staying in our area to end the cat fight on the group! And yes, the policeman is of colour, and told Lady2 that Lady1 had given a proper description, as police had previously instructed the people in the neighbourhood. Lady2 promptly removed herself from both the crime and community group.

It also helped Lady1's 'case' that this very suspicious character was caught on two CCTV cameras breaking in to, or trying to break in to properties later that day. One being that of the policeman who commented and stopped the fight! His daughter's shoes on the porch was stolen, and the guy couldn't force the front door open, but he tried! Stole a bunch of stuff at the second house, but got away when the neighbour's dogs started barking, and the people came to the fence to see what was up. They saw him running away, scaling the back fence, into the bush.

So I've had my installment of the latest soapy (tv series with people causing more drama than is worth your time to watch/listen). At least last night was our first night that we could sleep through, with no wandering cattle waking us up for their midnight/early morning snack on the lawn.

Not much else... I got the allergy test referral papers. Dr. B wrote one for each of the boys, and myself. We'll go Thursday morning (tomorrow).

We also don't have the self defense lessons Thursday morning any more. The lady moved it to early Saturday morning. This is the first and only Saturday that Brandt and I can sleep in a bit, that he isn't going out to marshal at a race, and we kind of promised each other that we just want to be at home. So I cancelled our participation with the self defense lessons, and asked whether we couldn't join another class or group. The lady wrote back that they don't give normal classes, that this was a CBD- initiative (Central Business District) due to all the latest attacks in and around the city and that she and her helper have normal jobs during the week. They don't give self defense lessons as a norm. She also refused to send me any of the information papers she was going to send if I took part in the class, and I didn't keep the advert that she sent to the home school community about two weeks ago, so I can't double check what she'd written there. But something smells fishy now... Brandt says the boys and I must just start doing our own practices again, and he'll try to help and guide us at night, or over a weekend, or something.

Brandt and his colleague are also looking to do that Drakensberg 1 day hike from last year. The one that was cancelled every time. But the only weekend that Brandt has free (except this immediate weekend) is the first one in July (7th-8th). H and his wife has to see whether they are free that weekend, and after that it gets too cold in the 'Berg to hike without special gear. Oh yes! Winter is here! It is very cold at night! Not your cold up north, but cold enough for us. This cold... Rocco wearing his Superman onesie :D And yes, he is holding his breath to look more like Superman.

Ooh! I'm excited! Found out about negative push ups on @Xena's challenge. I'm going to change my 1x10 full push ups (because I'm still struggling to go down low) and my 1x10 knee push ups for this!

I'll still try and do the knee pushups with hands in diamond form, to have a greater impact on my triceps, though. Will report Friday how that is going.

EDIT:

And last... have you heard this song? I love it!

Yay! I love negative pushups. Full pushups are very hard for me to build up to, but negatives have always been the key.

That self defense class situation does sound very fishy. Maybe better that you've gotten out of it. Practicing on your own is always good, and maybe some other opportunity will come up.

I can do about 2x5 +-full push ups, but I don't go low enough. I tried the negative push ups yesterday, and I think that will help to get me to strengthen on going down lower. Also had the boys try it, as they do a strength workout twice a week with me, and they have to do push ups for every wrong sum/answer on their school work (their decision, I just need to keep them to it - suffice to say, they get very little wrong now especially in math). I think this will definitely help us all.

Yes, I'm not sure what is up with this. I'll try to figure out when and how to add the self defense in.

Cold day today with possible rain tonight, and for the first time in a while time is dragging! We don't have school work today, as we did everything on the previous days, and working tomorrow.
