Week 2 Day 1:

I'm registering for a 7k trail race in my hometown. I ran part of the trail today on which the race will be located, and I'm really hoping the race passes through the area where I ran, not because it's easy but because it's beautiful. I don't know the route because it's my first time running this race, and I can't find a race map (which is fine because the surprise adds to the adventure). All I know is I ran and lot of ups and downs today; my elevation gain was 788 ft. I repeated some of the trail to get a 5 mile total, so I know there is more to the race than the section I ran on, but I don't know how much more or where. I might not have even been on the right trail. Regardless, it was tough but fun.

My wife is leaving tomorrow morning to NC for the Mix Tape Tour (NKOTB, Salt-N-Peppa, Naughty By Nature, Debbie Gibson, and Tiffany). This is her first time going to a concert without any of the family since we got married (19 years). She's usually taking at least one of our daughters to something like Five SOS or some other tween pop group.

This morning  I worked for my mentor and carried and moved a total of 648 brick using brick tongs; they hold about 8 brick (5 pounds each = 40 pounds each tong). I carried them two at a time, so 40 pounds for each arm, basically like farmer carries.

Today, I ate some overnight oats for breakfast. I also got creative for lunch and made some tunacado; basically, I made tuna salad with carrots and peas and then put it on top of two avocado halves with a side of black beans with jalapenos. Dinner was just a bottle of Bolthouse Farms Protein Plus (coffee flavored).

And now I'm ready for bed.

I started reading All the Pretty Horses by Cormac McCarthy because my copy of Go Tell It on the Mountain is in my car (which my daughter has). Also listened to an episode of the Aubrey Marcus podcast with Nahko.

Update:

  • 0530 wakeup b/c my daughter had to be taken to the ER last night; she's fine, but we did not get to sleep until after 1am.
  • Said the Lord's Prayer as well as a more personal prayer
  • Daily Dare finished with EC: stand on one foot for 3 minutes in one go. I wobbled and hopped around a lot, and my cats looked concerned (or confused? maybe both?), but I got it done.
  • Listened to the daily prayer on the Pray As You Go app
  • Continued work with my mentor: mixed mortar by hand, helped lay about 150 brick, carried 8 five-gallon buckets of mortar powder, 6 five-gallon buckets of water, and 4 five-gallon buckets of sand.
  • Also ran, played in the rain and splashed in puddles with my daughters
  • Read a few pages of Go Tell it On the Mountain by James Baldwin
  • Breakfast: bowl of scrambled eggs with chicken and hashbrowns. Lunch: Shaggy dog sushi roll. Dinner: blackened chicken penne alfredo with spinach and mushrooms

So much happened today, I have to post an update.

• 0530 wakeup because I was up late last night (long story).

• Said the Lord's prayer, as well as a more personal prayer.

• I worked with my mentor this morning and filled 45 five-gallon buckets with gravel, loaded them on his truck, and unloaded them at the job site.

• Took princess Bianca to a doctor appointment and managed to get in a 1 mile run while I waited.

• Drove to the other house and boxed up a lot of stuff in the living room, carried it to my mom's, and also moved all of the furniture out of the living room except two end tables and two lamps. Only five more rooms to go.

• My stepfather is pissed off because I broke the garage side door (on the house that is soon to be mine), which was dry-rotted anyway. I broke it when I pulled some ivy down that has been growing up the side of the garage. He claimed that now someone can get in it and steal everything; nevermind that the door and window was already broken and that most of the stuff in the garage is worthless old junk. My mom said she wished somebody would steal it all; it's all going to the trash anyway.

• Took a look at the kitchen and bathroom sinks to find out why no water is flowing. It's not the water lines; we're pretty certain the faucets are gummed up and need cleaned or replaced.

• At home, I carried out our loveseat and couch to be disposed of because we are getting new ones; the new couch is a sleeper sofa. I also took apart one of my daughters' bunk beds because we also plan to get them a new bed and because the old one is falling apart.

• Completed the Darebee daily dare.

• Did not work on my book

• Did not call my father

I still can’t get over that he’s upset you broke the door, which was dry rotted badly enough that pulling down vines is what did it in.

That sounds pretty good.

The vines might have been the only thing keeping it together by the sound of it.

I agree. This might sound bad, but one of the ways I know I have matured as a man is that when I was a kid living at home, I used to shrink in shame whenever he would get annoyed or irritated with me. But in regards to this house, he has tried several times to control the process, even though it was never his house to begin with (it's been in my Mom's side of the family for about 50 years), and I have addressed all of his concerns or complaints respectfully but sternly.

It was very good. And yes, you're probably right about the vines.

Your stepfather is being a total..........mmmhmmmm.

You got a lot done! I hope your gummy faucets get sorted out.

He does that sometimes. He's not as bad as he was when I was growing up, but he still has his moments. I have to be careful sometimes, too, because I can allow memories to trigger my own angry impulses, even though he's not behaving as badly and these aren't those memories.

Thank you. Princess Bianca and I just got into a flow and kept going. My buddy Neal helped figure out the sink issues and move furniture.

I hear you there. That hits home. I was basically the same way with my dad. My dad is a pretty reasonable guy, but a big part of maturing that I’ve done since my mid 20s is realizing that sometimes he’s in his own little world.

For example, my wife and I lived with my parents for a few months after we were married (she’d been injured pretty bad at work and we were also looking for an apartment of our own then). As a kid, teen, and college student one of the rules was always that when my dad needed help with a project, I rearranged my social life around that. Because during those times, that was basically playing games with friends, drinking, etc. Yet he had the same expectation when he wanted to replace a toilet after I was married... when I was heading to my company Christmas party. With my wife. Wearing a three-piece suit. He was pretty irritated with me, but I had to establish a boundary. This was a nice date night with my brand new wife, the first real social thing she did since our wedding reception because she was injured the day after at work, and on top of that it was a sales job that used the Christmas party for networking and career advancement. Skipping, showing up late, or showing up a mess would have torpedoed my career and harmed working

relationships. Being reasonable, he got over it and we talked through some changes afterwards.
