Charlie_Quinn Posted June 26, 2019 Report Share Posted June 26, 2019 Season 3 of GLOW starts in August so in honour of this, I'm doing a GLOW themed challenge. I'm re-watching the series from the beginning again and I forgot how much I love this show. If you haven't watched it, watch it! GLOW stands for The Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling and it was a real thing that existed in the 80s. I don't actually remember the original wrestling series - and yes, I am old enough to! - so I don't think it was shown in the UK. Which is a shame as I was very into wrestling as a kid and I would have watched the hell out of badass women wrestling and goofing around. Challenge Goals 1. Crossfit 3 times a week I can't find a gif of Alison Brie doing ring pull ups, that would have been perfect here Step 1: Book into Crossfit Step 2: Go to Crossfit Step 3: Profit Get Ripped. 2. Do Bulletproof Shoulder Program 2 times a week Crossfit, destroyer of shoulders! Step 3 above is taking a little longer thanks to reoccurring shoulder niggles. Thankfully, one of the coaches at the box is a sports therapist, and she's written a program for us weak shouldered people. It's a mix of mobility work and exercises to strengthen the rotator cuff and surrounding area. I'm 1.5 weeks into the 6 week program so I should be finished this by the end of the challenge. 3. Run 2 times a week Last challenge I used the excuse of running being in the crossfit WODS as an excuse to not run outside of class. When I did finally go out for a run by myself, it sucked! 400m sprints are great (they are not) but they aren't going to help me run 10k OCRs and I have a few of those coming up. Side Goal - Don't fall off the challenge threads I took a long break from challenges and last time around was my first time back. I set a goal of updating at least once a week and I'll continue that this time around too. I'm extending it to include checking in with others and commenting on other threads. Rangers gotta stick together. I was sick at the beginning of this week. Just a cold but it left me very tired for two days. So that meant no Crossfit on Tuesday. Bulletproof Shoulders 1/2 I decided to go to the open gym session yesterday evening to do shoulder rehab, as the program called for kettlebells and I don't own any. I had to do kettlebell carries in front rack position. It was one of those movements that makes you think 'I don't get what this is doing' and then half way through the second round, you suddenly find out what it's doing! There was also a lot of passive hanging and scap raises. Maybe a nice added bonus of this program will be better pull ups! Doing that workout in the gym meant that I had to skip my run. But I've got an OCR this weekend anyway so running will be done. Crossfit will happen tonight. Stu asked me this morning if I was going to CF tonight, to which I enthusiastically replied 'Of course!' Charlie_Quinn Posted July 1, 2019 Author Report Share Posted July 1, 2019 Week Zero wrap up Thurs - Crossfit This was a really good session. For strength, we worked on snatches. The last time we did this I spent the whole session working on form and it still didn't feel right. The format was 2 reps every 75 secs for 9 sets, and the coach said to stay light at first and only increase if moving well. I started off with the technique bar with the 5kg plates and I was surprised to move this easily with good form right from the start. So I switched to the regular bar for the second set and moved the weight up gradually. I ended up snatching 30kg in the last few sets which is now my PB. WOD The wod was interesting 2 rounds: 12 front squats 12 DB snatch Increase weight by 2.5kg 9 front squats 9 DB snatch Increase weight by 2.5kg 6 front squats 6 DB snatch Increase weight by 2.5kg I can't remember my starting weight, as there was a little problem with a lack of 1.25 and & 2.5kg plates (the guys had to increase by 5kg each time) so the start of the wod was a little hectic. I finished the workout pretty quick, mostly because I was snatching a 9kg dumbbell and I find this way too easy. The problem is, the next dumbbell weight up is a 15kg - not sure why there is nothing in between - and I find this way too hard! At the end of the session, I spoke to the coach about this issue, expecting her to tell me to snatch with a 12kg kettlebell instead. NOPE! I got told that the only way I'm going to improve is to use the 15kg and drop down to the 9 in later rounds, but only if I'm so fatigued that I can't lift it anymore. So in coach speak, that means Suck It Up Buttercup Saturday - OCR: Uventure 12k Hubs and I ran this one together. The temperature on Saturday was very high (for England), so we took it pretty easy. The organisers told people not to be heroes and to take the 6km split on the course if they were struggling in the heat. We said we would see how we felt when we hit the split, but both intended to run 12km. I didn't run as much as I hoped, but mostly that was due to the heat. There was a lake swim around half way which felt absolutely glorious and helped to bring our body temperature down long enough for us to feel OK when we hit the course split so we carried on on the 12k. It was very hilly with a lot of technical trial in woodland, which helped keep the sun off us, but in the open, it was roasting and I struggled. I must have walked the entire last kilometer and by the time we finished, my head was pounding and I felt sick. I'm guessing I probably had a touch of heat stroke so we grabbed a pizza and some sodas from the event village, sat in the car and blasted the AC as high as it would go (not very high, apparently. I hate our car). It took nearly the entire journey home for me to feel normal again and I went to bed very very early! Sunday - Bulletproof Shoulder Program 2/2 I woke up a little grumpy in the morning, partly due to being woken up by rowdy neighbours. We had promised to help Stu's dad with his garden on Sunday. He had a stroke almost exactly a year ago, so we've been helping him with the bits of the garden that he finds difficult (which isn't a lot, his dedication to his recovery program has meant he is nearly back to full mobility). The weather was a little cooler so it was a nice day to potter around the garden and was a good recovery activity. In the evening I finished week 2 of the shoulder program - a lot of mobility and bodyweight movements to fatigue. My shoulders were bothering me a little after Saturday so it the mobility movements felt good. After a slow start, I'm happy with how this week ended.
