Tuesday

Another pretty good day. Nothing too exciting to report though I did make it out for a run finally and food was on point. I had therapy which feels a little unnecessary since I haven't really been struggling lately, but maybe I haven't been struggling because of therapy? And apparently I thrive in the heat now because my run was one of the fastest I've done yet despite not running for over 2 weeks and it still being around 90F at 7:30pm. My next run is going to have to be early in the morning because the next 4 days are supposed to be 100F

Fantastic! Well, sometimes, breaks from running are sometimes good and needed - the muscles recover and then you come back even faster. Btw, 90 F, whoa? I thought you were in UK? (Sorry if I got it mixed up.)

Lol, that would make sense if I were running more often, but I've never managed to stay consistent at it.

Some of the difference is probably that I finally bought some shorts. Other than in OCR's I've always worn pants on runs because I hate shorts

Nope, smack dab in the center of the US. This is pretty normal for us here. I think I would like living in the UK except I'd miss the snow (which we still get plenty of despite out summer heat)

Lol, yup, I mixed it up. :)) Sorry. :hopelessness: Anyway, now it makes sense. In the UK, those temps can be only during the apocalypse. :D It's a really nice country and much less rain than I expected, at least here in the south, but yeah, I miss the snow too (and summer heat as well). Croatia's climate is more like the one from your part of the US - clearer distinctions between the seasons.

Wednesday

Another good day. It's game night so no workout but food was tracked and under goal. I even turned down cupcakes the couple that always bring sweets brought. I did eat two small spoonfuls of Ben and Jerry's but they were actually small (I'm just through the top layer of the pint). And my bag is packed to hit the gym tomorrow

Thursday

I've been feeling pretty meh most of the day. Wasn't feeling very worky and just wanted to go home. I did push myself to get to the gym after work and had a great workout. I'm always glad when I go. Food's been good though I'm still feeling very meh and half tempted to face plant into the nearly full pint of Ben & Jerry's. Not sure why I'm in a funk today. Gonna get to bed soon and hope some sleep will do me good. If nothing else a three day weekend with no plans should cheer me up

Well fuck me. I figured out why I'm in a funk. I might elaborate more in this when I'm not typing on my phone but I'm having a mid (third?) life crisis and am half tempted to buy the 1980 Toyota campervan for sale down the road from me, quit my job, and do all the shit I want to do before I'm too old to do it. Accountants can work much later in life than people can do mud runs and rock climbing

I get you. I think if I had the means, I'd live a semi-nomadic life with my family, enjoying nature and being out of the (office) box as much as possible. Others always say to us, why aren't you buying a flat or building a house, and we feel like that's too limiting and prescribing (especially with the mortrage), dunno. Still haven't gone campervan though. :)

Not-Quite-Mid-Life-Crisis aka First World Problems Rant

I was introduced to the idea of early retirement at about 23 in grad school by a finance professor explaining what turned out to be the "4% rule" touted by the FIRE (financial independence, retire early) community. A couple of years later I found Mr. Money Mustache and early retirement suddenly became a real possibility. Not as early as MMM mind you, but by 40 was possible. Now, after 7ish years of a healthy combination of hard work, good luck, and privilege we have a great lifestyle for us at very low expenses and are very nearly what I call "Dave Ramsey Debt Free" (all but the mortgage paid off, which is not actually debt free but Dave Ramsey lets you do the debt-free scream on his show then).  Neither Hubs nor I make amazing money (both of us made the decision to earn less than our potential for jobs we liked better) yet we're now in a position where I don't have to work (as long as Hubs does and he doesn't want to retire early). Realistically I should work about 2 more years to finish getting my CPA and get through the tax season that starts right after I get it while adding to the stash as a buffer and to keep options open for Hubs

So now, while I still feel young, when I think of what my age will be in a couple of years when I can comfortably upset my employment situation it seems...old. I think of all the things I want to do (rock climbing, part time vagabonding, hiking, Spartans) and doing them in my upper-30's seems so much harder than doing them now (at 33). I know it's kinda silly, I can do most of those things now and will still be able to do them in 10 years but it feels like I'm letting my life slip by waiting for the next step. I feel like I'm always in the mode of waiting for XXX to happen before I can really be happy (I'm not unhappy, life is good, I could just be happier).

Anyway, I've been in this funk before and it's always been a passing phase. I'm already feeling better about it all. Overall I'm playing life on easy mode and I do realize and appreciate how lucky I am for that

Friday

Yesterday was a pretty good day. Had the day off with no real plans. I got my ass out early before it got ridiculously hot and got a run in, then we went and watched the new Spiderman movie, I turned down Chipotle in favor of cooking at home, and lazed around most of the rest of the day with small breaks of domestic rangering. My run was so-so. I alternate my runs between distance (a mile for now) and intervals and this was a mile one. It was 8am and about 80F already and approximately 387% humidity so it was a bit of a struggle. I tried pushing out to 1.1 mile again but, like last time, it just wasn't going to happen. Breathing steam does not make for an easy run. But I got out and did it which made two runs for the week! Food was tracked and under goal and my house is nearly under control again after 3 weeks of craziness. I could really get used to these 3 day weekends :)

Saturday

Why do the feels always hit me on Saturdays? I mean, I was having feels already this week, but those were different from my reoccurring Saturday feels. After Hubs leaves for his Saturday night gaming session I always end up feeling anxious and like I'm struggling. Even when I'm not struggling at all. This week has been spot on perfect with minimal fighting myself and this morning I hit my 5lbs weight loss goal for the challenge but I'm still this ball of anxiety about struggling. I think part of my trigger today is that we're supposed to go out to lunch with some friends and I'm way too early in the finally-seeing-progress stage of things to want to test my willpower at freaking Red Robin. I need to have a talk with Hubs about how he needs to support my goals there or I'm not going (they're his friends, not really mutual ones though I get along with them).

Not to say that today has been all bad. I made it to kickboxing this morning, got caught up on housework, managed to make some progress in weeding (this will be a never-ending battle, we have a few ridiculous weeds with deep and interconnected roots that I can't dig all the way out), spent some good quality time with Hubs, and of course hit my 5lbs weight loss goal this morning (technically I saw it yesterday but it was after my early morning run and before I'd eaten or drank anything so I didn't count it). Food has been good despite wanting to eat my feelings.

Week Three Summary

Kickboxing - 3/2

Running - 2/2

Food - 6/5

Weight - down 5lbs from the start of the challenge despite the obstacles

It was a spot on perfect week. Overall I'm really happy and excited with how things are going. I've let go of what I "should" be doing and  just doing the things that work and I'm seeing the benefits. Running is still a bit of a challenge, between actually getting out there and then not dying. It's supposed to cool down a bit next week so hopefully that will make things easier. The feels were definitely a thing this week, but I didn't let them hold me back. I just need to keep an eye on them to make sure I don't self-sabotage because of them

Sunday

Pretty good day despite being woken up early by jerk animals. It was storming so Floof was pacing around the house click-clacking on the wood floors (a reminder I need to cut his nails....) then Fury made a ridiculous amount noise while opening up a dresser drawer so she could lay on Hub's clothes (Why, psycho cat? Why?). But I got up, moved to the couch, and promptly fell back asleep for a couple more hours so I guess they get to live, this time :P

I did end up going out to lunch with Hubs and friends after talking about sticking with my goals. He joked a bit, but I think he may have realized why I was insistent about it when he saw that a freaking side dish was 900 calories (among other caloric atrocities). As best as I could figure, the burger I ended up getting was about 550cals and had steamed broccoli as a side so I was very happy. Total food for the day was tracked and under goal, even if I go for a few spoonfuls of the B&J in the freezer before bed

After getting lunch I headed back out and finally went freaking climbing!!! Those of you have been around for a while may remember that 2 summers ago I took an intro to climbing class at the local university's rec center...and never went back. Then last summer took the class again.....and never went back again. I finally went today for just a normal climb. It was by myself and I decided to stick with the auto-belay routes for now but it was good. I tried a bouldering route too and basically made it but my hands and forearms were mostly shot by then so I didn't do much more. Apparently I trust the auto-belays to catch me when I jump off, but not when I fall because I was mildly terrified while actually climbing but fine while descending. I'd like to keep going back about once a month and work up to doing routes with a belayer

After that I went for a run. It was so much cooler today (76F) so I decided to try my long run again and it was slow but I finally pushed it to 1.1 miles

Cue standard update: Things went well. I went to kickboxing and had a blast. Food has been tracked and is under goal. Things are moving along quite nicely and I feel like my updates are getting boring, which is not necessarily a bad thing, just uninteresting for anyone following along. Oh, and I'm at 3 days in a row of holding my 5lbs weight loss

I have a couple of ideas of what to add to the next challenge, which will also be boring since I'll only pick one new thing (plus probably a sushi list) but that's what I need to do. I may poll the  crowd to see which of my ideas is best to add first

Wednesday

Another good but uninteresting day. Food was mostly good and I'm pretty sure that even with the hunk of cookie pie I ate I was still under calories (I used the calorie count of 2 cookies from Burger King which has more mass than the hunk I ate). I squeezed in a trip to the gym between work and game night. I was mildly grumpy and considered skipping since I'm on track for the week anyway but reminded myself that I'm always happy I go and so I went and was happy about it.

I'm mildly annoyed at my scale. I've gotten the exact same weight for 4 days in a row which I know is unrealistic. But I just keep reminding myself that I'm eating at enough of a caloric deficit that I will have to lose weight, even if it's not a nice linear progression. Hopefully it means I'll have a biggish drop in a few days :)

ETA: As I say below, I ended up eating more of the cookie and am not particularly pleased with myself

All caught up!

Great to see you keeping up with your goals. I know what you mean though, it gets really boring constantly writing 'I did that thing I said I was going to'. But consistency is good and leads to results. Keep up the good work!

RE: The midlife crisis thing. As someone who is now closer to 40 than 30, I promise you you will be perfectly capable of doing these things in 10 years! I worry about getting older, but I know I'm more capable, fitter and stronger now than I ever was in my 20s or even my early 30s for that matter. But yeah, I also have the camper-van dream! It's something I said I would get once we get a house with a driveway to park it on! Hopefully that'll happen next year.

So glad you went climbing! If you're going solo, then bouldering is the best option, if you have a big enough bouldering space where you are. I really prefer bouldering to top rope now. Just had a thought,  when you visit the UK, we can go climbing :D

Blarg. I ended up eating more of the cookie last night because once I start I lose self control. No idea what my calorie total was so I'm not going to count it towards my goal. I'm still on track to meet the goal overall for the week so I'm trying to not beat myself up but it's stupid how I just keep going once I start

All caught up!

Great to see you keeping up with your goals. I know what you mean though, it gets really boring constantly writing 'I did that thing I said I was going to'. But consistency is good and leads to results. Keep up the good work!

Thanks! I'm happy it's been consistently good for longer than I've done in a long time, but it does make it hard to make my posts more than "I did the things"

Realistically I know I'm fine, but my need-to-do and want-to-do lists are so long I have no idea how I'll ever manage everything. We talked over vacation about campervans (even before seeing the one for sale down the road), but even that has to wait because we have no place to put it now. We have a one car garage and a driveway just big enough to fit a second car and it only works because we work basically the same hours and in a pinch we're fine driving each others cars if timing doesn't work out.

I was so happy I finally made it back! I will definitely try bouldering more but they were re-doing routes and had half the bouldering wall blocked off as well as a section of the top rope area. Plus they were doing an intro to climbing class right next to the easier side of the bouldering wall.

I was thinking I need extended time out there when I go to the UK so I can do an OCR, go climbing, and check out the OCR training place with you all

Glad you said it first! (though I also see Maigs' point about wanting to do more of her big list sooner)

Thursday

My brain went into panic mode for no reason Thursday. I tried making a list of things I'd been putting off that I should do and nothing that came to mind was at all panic-worthy. I ended up self-soothing with a larabar and Dr Pepper. Between that and making the list I did end up feeling better by the end of the day. I even managed to get a decent amount done from the list in the evening, though I did not make dinner so we ended up getting Taco Bell and I made a larger dent than necessary in a pint of Ben & Jerry's. Exercise didn't happen

Friday

Man I love having Friday's off, I'll be really sad when it stops in a few weeks. I got all sorts of productive stuff done (basically finished my list) including finally finishing weeding the back garden area which took me well over 2 hours and included digging up some ridiculous roots. Then I showered and laid out in the hammock for a bit because I freaking deserved it :P Food was meh. I didn't plan anything and we ended up meeting some of Hub's coworkers for lunch at a pizza place where I had half of a small veggie pizza, a breadstick, and another Dr Pepper which all made me a bit uncomfortable, probably from all the grease that I'm just not used to handling. Around 7pm I figured I should probably eat something and was vaguely munchie if not actually hungry and ended up eating a frozen burrito, the rest of the B&J, and some peanut butter. The good news is that after 2.5 days of eating not so great I'm more than ready to get back on track and eating foods that not only support my goals, but make me feel better.

Goals are still standing at:

Kickboxing - 2/2

Running - 2/2

Food - 3/5

Next Challenge Thoughts

Next challenge will be mostly the same as this one but I want to add one of two things. Either:

1) A stretching goal, something like 10 minutes 4 times a week. I'm very inflexible and my legs especially are so tight that I'm probably risking injury

or

2) A pushup goal that would either be "X pushups 4 times a week" or "XXX cumulative pushups over the course of the challenge". For now any type of pushup would count for either goal since most of them will be knee pushups at this point. I may work in a bit of a plank goal with this too since planks would help with the pushups.

I will also probably make a sushi list that will include going climbing at least once and maybe something crazy like going for a run before work at least once
