Rebel Mini - Art Collaborative

Welcome, Rebels! And welcome too, all others in the Rebellion!

This is a mini designed to encourage creativity. Art is a kind of alchemy, creating something of nothing, and the feeling of purpose and accomplishment that accompanies a completed work can give you a great boost when you're otherwise feeling low. Everyone is busy and working hard on the daily grind, but taking a few minutes to be creative can help oil the gears and keep spirits high. So let's have some fun this challenge and make a portfolio together!

This mini, we will each create a piece of art. It may be any medium (sketch, painting, sculpture, mosaic, digital art, whatever you like), any color scheme, any size, everything up to you.

The suggested theme is "ocean life," but if that doesn't spark interest for you, do something else!

During the first week of the challenge, your goal is this:

Think about art. What kind of art do you like to look at? What do you like to make? Have you ever made art before, and how did it go? What might you like to create for this challenge? Do not begin working on your piece yet. Just think about it.

If you would like, post some of your thoughts below, but if you feel they're private don't feel pressured. If you have any questions, post those too!

I am a maker, creating art with my body, dancing and crocheting my primary forms as for now. I am starting my first steps in poetry, and wrote a small poem about waves. Will share it as soon as I have it with me.

I like watching paintings (used to make them too) and watching/reading/listening to narrations.

I am starting mindful colouring as well lately.

I could create a short choreography. I would have the perfect wool for a crochet project about waves and ocean, but not sure I have the time for it in one challenge...

I'm not very artistic, but I'm sure I could come up with a stick figure that resembles a turtle ;)

I'd be pretty excited to see that, honestly. Like. Turtles are mostly a circle with the shell, so a stick figure version has gotta be pretty imaginative, right?

Note to anyone concerned by what I've just written: no one is going to be required to share what they come up with. Relax. But if you want to share it, I'm sure everyone will want to see how we did.

But idk if I'd call it a stick figure? I was imagining something more like this:

I dare someone to get this as a tattoo.

It would be hilarious if a tattoo artist wanted to display this in the shop as flash, but I'd be a little worried if anyone actually paid money for that.

If you have a tattoo buddy who will give you free dare tattoos, go for it.

This is the thing I wrote before the start of this mini:

Wave

Water
Back and forth.

Light
Up and down on a chart.

The movement
Always changing to remain the same.

Forcing it in place would destroy it.

As a person,
Always evolving to stay the same.

Embrace change.

Evolve.
Adapt.
Vibrate.

My word is wave.

I wish I could paint.  That is on my "maybe after all the other wishes" list.  Currently creative outlets are sewing garments not too skillfully, and crocheting slightly more skillfully.  My current goal already involved learning to knit, and I sadly discovered to redo from start a crochet project I thought I'd finished.  So I'm in, without ocean life, but with enthusiasm.

YAY I love how well this is being received!

What kind of art do you like to look at?

I like looking at art that is bright in colour or might shift reality a bit. I love art that has very interesting contrasts and dramatic lighting or perspectives. I also love looking at older architecture.

What do you like to make?

I like painting and pastels. I used to sculpt but it started to hurt my hands a bit. My mediums of choice are acrylic paints and chalk pastels. I do love watercolour but I lack the patience for it lol.

Have you ever made art before, and how did it go?

Lolllll I do art as part of my daily life (as everyone probably knows if they have went into any of my threads). I am actually currently working on a shark and its been very very challenging for me. The random lighting from the waves and the battle of realism are my main issues. I generally make horses and dogs and I think they turn out pretty awesome. I am proud of everyone I have done.

What might you like to create for this challenge?

I am thinking it would be fun to do jellyfish or something a bit more abstract which would be out of my comfort zone.

@Diahduit  for some reason tagging isn't working for me but beautiful poem! It is a bit chaotic like a wave but also structured :) I like it.

What kind of art do you like to look at?

Yes! I love anything and everything because I find it can always inspire me, soothe me, and give me hope that the world isn't that bad after all. One of my favorite quotes, "Without Art, Earth is just 'Eh'". That pretty much seems it up.

What do you like to make?

Crochet is my main outlet right now. But I've done watercolor, zentangle, pencil drawing, woodworking, sewing, jewelry making, food creations, painting ceramics and who knows what else. Last year for the scavenger hunt, I made a painting but the paint was skittles water. I'll try anything once!

Have you ever made art before, and how did it go?

I've had successes and failures. I don't have a lot of patience to grow technique, I'd love to get better at drawing, but I hate practicing... I don't understand. I am pretty good at accepting my little mistakes and being pleased with the outcomes. I did my first mosaic crochet in the last year and that turned out gorgeous and really got me back into that art. I've also done some cool pencil sketches and zentangle tiles.

What might you like to create for this challenge?

I want to make an octopus. There's a line drawing by Jenny Lawson, aka The Bloggess that I've loved, but I want to do it with an Octopus reaching up out of the ocean. We'll see...

@J3NN that line art is amazing and I love it and also thank you for bringing something up:

YOUR ATTENTION PLEASE: I forgot to mention this before and hopefully it doesn't need mentioning, but everyone please remember that if you are posting works here which you did not create yourself, PLEASE INCLUDE ATTRIBUTION. We like to give credit where credit is due.

What kind of art do you like to look at?

In terms of paintings, I like art that makes me feel peaceful and happy, which often tends to end up being landscapes and abstracts that aren't too busy (there are a few Rothkos I'm very fond of). In poetry, I prefer poems that are on the more direct side of things, and tend to get fed up quickly with hunting for deeper meanings. I haven't yet quite been able to put my finger on my preferences for animation design, but I definitely have them and won't watch certain anime shows simply because the art is too off-putting.

What do you like to make?

I like to paint landscapes and draw animals. I did a series of stippled jellyfish a while ago that came out great. When I was a kid, I loved to make clay sculptures out of FIMO, but I haven't done that in ages. I also took a ceramics class in college and loved throwing pottery but hated everything else we did. Oh, and I recently completed a paint by numbers project that was super fun, which is what got me back into painting for the first time in my adult life.

I also like making food, but I wouldn't count it as art most of the time. And I really like working with my hands and making things that are useful, but I tend to bite off more than I can chew with most projects and then never finishing them.

Have you ever made art before, and how did it go?

I've been drawing since I was big enough to hold crayons, but have very little formal art education to speak of. Some of my projects come out lovely and I still enjoy them to this day. Others never get finished and are a constant source of irritation (until I scrap them). Art making can be really frustrating, but it can also be very meditative, and the feeling of finishing a project is really wonderful.

What might you like to create for this challenge?

Last challenge I bought five sheets of large paper and I'm thinking of turning them into a series of ocean creatures. I'd like to get at least one done this challenge, but I still have to think about how I want to manage the color scheme and what other things I'll do to tie the five pieces together. I'm sure it'll come to me.

Ooo I'm down for this! Sadly haven't been very creative over the past year. Coming from an art graduate... I am ashamed.

Think about art. What kind of art do you like to look at?
A lot of different things. Mostly contemporary things linking to societal issues.

Rothko made me cry -_- love his work!

I'mma combine these two questions - I did art academy as a bachelor's degree. Illustration was my major, motion graphics the minor. Loved it, but decided in year 3 that I didn't think I'd want that to be my profession. So yes, I made art, mostly illustrations, sometimes an animation. Did pretty well. Kinda miss it. :)

Something about humans messing up the ocean. Plastic soup? Pulse fishing?

It's a new week and it's time to move forward with our art projects!

This week's tasks:

  1. Make a final decision about what you're going to do. Theme, medium, color choices; I want you to have a plan in place and an idea in your head of what your finished project will look like!
  2. Collect your materials. Paper, yarn, paint, clay, whatever you've decided to use, you'll need to have it on-hand to start, let alone finish.
  3. Select and/or prepare a PLACE TO WORK. Some of you may already have a designated crafting area and some of you may have a handy kitchen table to work at (or have selected a medium that doesn't require much space). And some of you may have the perfect place if only it was clean, or maybe the floor...? ;) Clean the area, make it ready for your project, tell your roomies if you're going to be disrupting regular house routines. You don't want to get to go day and have a bunch of excuses for putting it off.
  4. Everyone's creative process is unique, so do anything else you need to do before you get started. If you're drawing a comic, make the thumbnails; if you're knitting, get your pattern ready; if your roommate likes to cook your macaroni before you can glue it down, develop a system of lasers to keep them out of your craft corner (or whatever). Consider how much time this project will take, look at your schedule for the next couple of weeks, and plot out some timeslots.
  5. IF, having done all of the above, you have extra time this week and are raring to go, you may begin. If tasks 1~4 are enough for you for a week, or if you're not anticipating your project taking too terribly long to complete, you may relax.

Don't forget to check in and let us know how your project is going! Sometimes by taking extra time to plan, you can spot pitfalls in advance; sometimes you get nervous or pumped by gearing up to start on a project. Has it been a while since you made art? Do you do it all the time? Are you excited? Worried about anything? Keep us posted!
