WolfDreamer Prioritizes

Recommended Posts

I wish I could say this challenge will be an epic one, but alas, no.

Summer is over for me. I return to my teaching position this Thursday and begin another school year. This means I need to get back into my morning routine. So that's my goal: prioritize my morning routine. I've downloaded a habit tracker to help me with some of the newer habits, but here's what my mornings will look like:

• 0430-0445 wakeup

• Lord's prayer, as well as a more personal prayer

• daily devotional/scripture/meditation

• Darebee daily dare

• Wim Hof Method breathing/exercise/cold shower

• take dogs out while barefoot and shirtless

Once that is all done, it will be about time to get my kids up and ready for school.

Some bonus options:

• run at least 3 times/week

• continue Darebee's 30 Days of Yoga challenge

Is there a cutoff in the year for the barefoot stuff you do?

No. Part of the Wim Hof Method is cold exposure. I'm not outside with the dogs long enough nor does it really get cold enough here for me to worry too much about frostbite.

Ummmm, what? It is most definitely epic. You have the opportunity to directly impact people on a weekly basis. Some of my teachers were extremely influential on my life and my success thus far. Going back to teaching sounds like a pretty epic feat to me.

Thank you both. I really needed that encouragement today.

This morning was a bust. My youngest woke up in the middle of the night scared, and after calming her down I had trouble getting back to sleep. So I ended up resetting my alarm after it went off and didn't get through my routine this morning. I did pray, meditate, and take the dogs out barefoot but later in the morning.

I have no choice tomorrow. I found out from my supervisor that we have staff development tomorrow, so I will actually start back tomorrow. I'm anxious and excited to get the year started.

Those types of mornings happen. We need to get back into school mode here. It’s gonna be rough. I’ve been getting about an hour and a half more sleep this summer than I do during the school year.

May you have a fantastic school year.

Love the challenge! Another WimHoffer! As above was said, being a teacher can be in itself epic! Have a great new school year. South here we're starting the second semester.

Thanks, brother. Our students start back next week, and we will be finished in mid-late May. The good news is the air works in my office, so it's not a hell pit right now. Our program is located on a university campus, and there is no thermostat in the office, so the air is controlled in some central location (idk where). Since the university doesn't start classes until the week after next, there was a chance they wouldn't turn our air on until next week.

Yesterday Morning Update:

• 0430-0445 wakeup: Yes

• Lord's prayer, as well as a more personal prayer: Yes

• daily devotional/scripture/meditation: Yes

• Darebee daily dare: Yes

• Wim Hof Method breathing/exercise/cold shower: Yes

• take dogs out while barefoot and shirtless: Yes

I slept in a but this morning because I didn't get to bed until late. So:

• 0430-0445 wakeup: No

• Lord's prayer, as well as a more personal prayer: Yes

• daily devotional/scripture/meditation: No

• Darebee daily dare: Yes

• Wim Hof Method breathing/exercise/cold shower: No

• take dogs out while barefoot and shirtless: Yes

My taste in music is expanding a bit right now. For the longest time I didn't listen to a lot of rap, not because I had anything against it but because most of it just sounded bad to me. There were a few artists and a few songs I enjoyed listening to (and arguably, rap's real Renaissance ended in the 90's), but lately I have been gaining a taste for more non-traditional and creative hip-hop and rap artists. I jammed to Chance the Rapper's newest album on my way to work yesterday, smiling the entire time. I love how really good music can lift your spirits.

The first thing I did when I arrived on campus this morning was return to my usual walk across campus to East Hall where I sat on the porch, sipped coffee, and read the first chapter of The Heroic Path by John Sowers. If you're not familiar with it, here is the book trailer:

Time to call some students and let them know when our program starts. Until later...

Well... we had one of the worst evenings as a family. Without getting into too many details, it began with my wife asking my teenage daughter to take her little sister to the bathroom (we were out shoe shopping), but we had already walked out to the car and my teenage daughter didn't want to walk back in. This started an argument between my wife and teenage daughter, and I got pulled into it. If you're not already aware, my teenage daughter struggles with some mental health issues, so she goes from upset to straight up furious and defensive when she's upset. It escalated into screaming, and every time we stopped and tried to ease the tension, she would start up again with some comment. She's the type that when she wants to say something hurtful she doesn't just say it once. It's like she sticks the knife in and then moves it around, jiggles it, pushes it in deeper. I'll admit shamefully that I did not react well, either, at times making it worse. But she really hurt me, and I couldn't stay calm.

After around two hours of arguing, there were finally a lot of apologetic tears, and I ended up taking her to spend the night at my mother's. I was up until past midnight because I just couldn't get to sleep. So, below is my best effort update for today:

• 0430-0445 wakeup: No

• Lord's prayer, as well as a more personal prayer: Yes

• daily devotional/scripture/meditation: Yes

• Darebee daily dare: Yes

• Wim Hof Method breathing/exercise/cold shower: No

• take dogs out while barefoot and shirtless: Yes

That sounds awesome!

Because it's Saturday, I didn't stick to my routine, but I also wasn't totally undisciplined.

  • woke up at 0545 am
  • took the dogs outside while shirtless and shoeless; it was cooler out this morning.
  • completed the Darebee daily dare
  • met my buddy Rick and walked up Lakeview Drive, which is a 400+ ft elevation gain in just over a mile, then we ran back down and to the lake where we ran about two more miles on the trail. Rick is training for a Spartan race and needed some elevation as well as some trail time.
  • took Princess Gracelynn to visit her great-grandparents while I ran an additional 6.35 miles with another buddy of mine, Brandon. This was the most running on road I have done in a while. Brandon is training for a 15 mile race at the end of the month.
  • listened to a Body Scan meditation using the Stop, Breathe & Think app.
  • Continuing to listen to The Rise of the Ultrarunners by Adharanand Finn.
  • Picked up a new book from Dollar Tree titled The Heart Healers: The Misfits, Mavericks, and Rebels Who Created the Greatest Medical Breakthrough of Our Lives. Most of the books sold at Dollar Tree are... meh... but this one received good reviews on Goodreads, and so far it is an interesting read. More info below:

Sunday Update:

  • "slept in" on purpose to recover from yesterday's activities; woke up on my own at 0738.
  • said the Lord's Prayer, as well as a more personal prayer
  • took the dogs outside while shirtless and shoeless
  • helped my wife wake our daughters up so they could go visit my in-laws; meanwhile, I stayed home to get some housework done and possibly go work at the other house that we plan to move into.
  • cleaned my yard and porch and carried bags of trash to the dumpster
  • drove to Upper Falls, which is a shallow part of the Coal River, and waded and swam for about thirty minutes in the current
  • went to the other house and cut up some overgrown weeds and ivy along the fence and the side of the house.
  • also cut down a small tree that was growing in my mother's flower bed; in the process I removed a bush that was dying due to the tree growing through it. My mom was not happy about this, but she calmed down when I told her it was mostly dead and that I was just trying to help. I told her I understood why she was upset because the house she lives in now belonged to her parents (my grandparents), and many of the bushes and shrubs were planted by my grandpa. This means that any changes or anything being thrown out or removed (much like the stuff in the house we're moving into, which used to belong to my great-grandmother) is stressing her our. She admitted this was true.
  • came back home and took a power nap while listening to a soothing binaural track on Insight Timer
  • read a few pages of Becoming Supernatural by Dr. Joe Dispenza. My favorite quote so far: "The fact is, there's no room for the unknown in a predictable life. But being predictable is not how the unknown works. The unknown is unfamiliar, uncertain--but it's also exciting, because it occurs in ways you cannot expect or anticipate. So let me ask you: How much room in your routine, predictable life do you have for the unknown?"
  • also found a free copy of Nobody Knows My Name by James Baldwin on campus. I plan to read a bit of that before bed.
  • when my wife and daughters returned home, I helped my wife get the little ones' clothes organized because school starts for them tomorrow
  • worked with my mentor for an hour (see past challenges for more info on my mentor) doing a variety of work at the job site: moved and laid some 12-inch block as well as some 4-inch slabs, shoveled dirt from a ditch to clear it out, and moved some lumber.

Quick update for Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday (today):

• 0430-0445 wakeup: 2/4 (it's been a rough couple of days)

• Lord's prayer, as well as a more personal prayer: 3/4

• daily devotional/scripture/meditation: 3/4

• Darebee daily dare: 4/4

• Wim Hof Method breathing/exercise/cold shower: 3/4

• take dogs out while barefoot and shirtless: 4/4

I also ran in the pouring rain Tuesday for 30 minutes and ran 5k yesterday (Thursday) in the heat (93 F). My pace was... meh both times, but the goal was to keep running and not give up in spite of the miserable weather. The Nike+ app was really helpful for both runs. During the rainy run, I listened to a guided run called "Head Start" in which Coach Bennett gives some thought-provoking running tips every five minutes. It took my mind off the rain. Yesterday's run, I listened to the 5k guided run and really appreciated his motivation.
