monty python boo GIF

Hi, visiting Assassin here doing something completely different this time around

monty python GIF

For the first time I am going to do a challenge that does not include an exercise component.

Challenge item 1

As you can tell from the title, this challenge will mostly be about food, specifically my new 5x5 food program designed specifically to fit the new 5 week challenge format.

The parameters for this challenge item will be around the following 5s:

5: The number of weeks the challenge will last

5: The number of days per week that I need to cook

5: The categories of foods that must be used (Beef/Pork/Chicken/Fish or Shrimp/Vegetarian)

5: The number of ways to prepare the foods (Mexican/Chinese/Pasta/Pan Fried/Other)

5: is right out

grenade GIF

So what I need to do is for 5 days out of each week, I need to cook a meal that uses one of those 5 foods and falls into one of those categories.  Everything has to be used at least once, and no doubling up.  The menu I have come up for the challenge is

Mexican: Ground Beef Tacos, Carnitas, Fish Tacos, Enchiladas, Bean & Cheese Burritos

Chinese: Beef & Celery, Braised Shortribs, Breaded Fish Strips, Chicken & Green Peppers, Egg & Tomato Scramble

Pasta: Beef Stroganoff, Sausage Penne, Salmon Fettuccine, Creamy Chicken Noodles, Vegetarian Lasagna

Pan Fried: Steak, Pork Medallions, Salmon Steaks, Teriyaki Chicken, Potato Egg & Cheese Scramble

Other: Beef & Broccoli Stirfry, Meatloaf, Cajun Shrimp, Chicken Cordon Blue, Vegetarian Curry

I'm not really sold on some of these, so if anyone has any suggestions, I am still open to changes.  Especially for the pan fried vegetarian one.

Challenge item 2

I got a set of sketching pencils for my birthday and I haven't even tried them out yet.  In fact, I haven't done any sketching at all for weeks.  Maybe even a couple of months.

monty pythons flying circus GIF

For this challenge, I want to get this back.  I want to break out the pencils and get back to doing some sketching, but setting a goal of sketching every day is unrealistic.  So my bare minimum is going to be 2 sketches each week, with a stretch goal of 5 per week.

Challenge item 3

I have been practicing the ukulele pretty regularly recently, but I have not done much to learn new songs.  Playing the same stuff over and over again is getting old

monty python this is one of my favourite scenes in that movie GIF

so time to expand into some new stuff.  Goal is to learn 1 new song each week.

Challenge item 4

I am going to try to learn some Chinese.  I bet you didn't expect that.

things thieve GIF

I was recently brushing off a compliment about my Chinese abilities by saying that I don't really know much about 成语, aka ancient Chinese proverbs.  The guy nodded and said "well of course you don't. There isn't any way you could know those unless you were a native speaker".  Telling me I can't do do something?  Gloves are coming off now, baby.  Challenge accepted!

fish GIF

I will learn 1 new proverb every weekday, so 5 new proverbs a week.  To keep myself accountable, I will come here and let you know which one I learned each day.

Pretty sure that is about it.  No other challenge items or unspoken themes.  Were done here.

I can give you a few tips on the recipes :)

For instance - the best way to cook salmon - is actually the microwave. Seriously! Pop in a dish, top with a little salt, pepper and dot with butter. Cover and cook 3 minutes, check and then 1 minute increments until translucent. Done!

Also - pan frying - I've started doing this with Steak and Pork chops - requires a Cast Iron Skillet.

Pop the skillet in the oven and heat to 425. Prep your meat (just salt and pepper for ribey or Strip steaks or throw together a spice mixture) - insert a remote probe into the thickest part of the meat. NOTE - this method is too hot for fish - but perfect for steak and pork. Once oven is heated, carefully remove pan. Drop in 1-2 Tbs of butter, swirl, add your meat and put back in the oven for 3 minutes. Turn meat over and cook until it reaches desired temp - this is why the remote probe. Perfect EVERY TIME!

Huh, I would have never thought that.  I actually prefer to do it in a skillet, though, so that I can get a nice sear on the skin.

Plus sketching, yes!

And curious as how your 5x5 on food will unfold, it looks HARD?

It will be interesting to compare if there are any equivalents in French or Persian.   For the 5x5, the hardest part is already mostly there (deciding what to make).  I think the hardest thing left is figuring out to turn each dish into a meal (i. e. what vegetables & starches to match with the main).

Week Zero Monday

5x5 Food:

I am calling it now, Mondays are going to be Meatless Monday.  Today I did my first vegetarian dish which was lasagna

brsbSBJ.jpg

I made it the same way I normally make lasagna but just left out the ground beef.  I didn't notice a big difference but Ghostlet said the difference was huge.  [shrug]

Sketching

I broke out my new sketching tools and tried using various pencils for the first time.  I decided it was time to try my hand at sketching hands :)

ubBYGle.jpg

It ins't the most realistic hand, but it was still better than the last time I tried doing hands.  I thin I will keep working on hands this week and see if I can improve.

Ukulele

I did a bit of practicing, but didn't get working on anything new yet

Proverbs

Today's proverb is 卓尔不群 (Zhuo Er Bu Qun) which means outstanding or different from everyone else but in a good way.  I even used it in a sentence this morning while I was working out at the park.

Week 0 Tuesday

Today was not very productive in terms of the challenge because I had a whole bunch of other things going on.

5x5 Food

Today was going to be #TacoTuesday but on old co-worker was in town so I scheduled to have dinner (which was in fact tacos ;) ) with him.  Ghostlet had dinner with his grandparents so nothing to report here.  I will need to make this up over the weekend.

Sketching

I needed to make a deposit at the bank today which of course took over 4 hours because that's how we roll in China.  I didn't have a lot of spare time today and I elected not to use it sketching.  Not a big deal, will try to make time tomorrow.

Ukulele

Same deal as above.  I will try to do some tomorrow when I am not so busy.

Proverbs

Today's proverb is 各奔前程 (Ge Ben Qian Cheng) which means everyone has their own path and is used to express the idea that just because you are going about things differently or seeking a different goal, it is no better or worse than others doing their own thing

MmMmm food!

And I completely agree, deciding what it is you're going to cook is the hardest part.

I saw a meme recently joking that the hardest part of being an adult is having to pick what you are going to eat every single meal for the rest of your life...

Week 0 Wedensday

Today was much more productive than yesterday :)

5x5 Food

This morning a friend stopped by and dropped off some seafood, including a giant fish that he caught yesterday.  It was the biggest fish I have ever touched and so I chopped it in half and decided to have the tail for dinner

83E6Z9y.jpg

after chopping it in half, I noticed that it hadn't been gutted (as I had assumed) so I did that first and then filleted it. Unfortunately it was only after that was done that I realized it had not been scaled either (again incorrect assumption).  From this I learned a few lessons:

1. Scale first, then fillet

2. When you assume, you make ass of U and me should probably double check because you might be wrong.  In fact, you probably are

3. Scaling a fish may be easier than scaling a cliff, but it likely to be much more messy (unless you forgot your ropes - don't do that!)

4. I don't know what you are doing, but you will probably make a mistake or two.  That's fine, everyone does

5. Wash your hands, that's gross

Dinner turned out pretty well.  I seasoned it with salt and pepper and then fried it up in a skillet and served it with rice.

kUHAEmc.jpg

This counts for my Chinese Seafood category

Sketching

I tried to do another hand similar to what I did Monday.

15GC4LS.jpg

Ukulele

I pulled up the chords and lyrics to The Irish Rover by Pogues and played through it until I was comfortable with all of the chord progressions

Proverbs

Today's proverb is 锲而不舍 (Qie Er Bu She) which means never give up (engraving that never wears down) and is used to describe continuing a difficult long term activity

Not a challenge item, but I filmed some handstands after my workout this morning and noticed that I have a very curved banana shape.  I'm not sure how much of it is driven by poor shoulder mobility, but I am guessing maybe 99%?

Probably, but it could also be your set up as you're starting really far from the wall. If you do back to wall HS you're always going to be starting from an arched position, and turning that into a straight handstand is quite tricky. That's part of the reason why chest to wall is the preferred way.

You can test how much is shoulder mobility by doing two tests

1. Stand with your back against the wall, and lift your arms overhead. No cheating allowed, meaning arms completely straight, pelvis stays neutral or tucked throughout the entire motion, ribs stay down. See how far you get. (You also have all the myflex tests of course, but they're much more strict and specific)

2. Still standing against the wall, reach the wall behind you and notice how much you have to compensate and how you rearrange your body to compensate. Your handstand shape will probably look something like that, and maybe even a little less straight as your shoulders might close even more once you dump your weight onto them.

A banana handstand is not a problem as such though, unless you think it is.

Sure, It's my challenge I can do whatever I want :P  I have never heard of this dish, so it is worth a try at some point.  The biggest challenge will be finding the right vegetables to throw in there, because most of those on that list are not available where I am.  Most likely I am going to fill this category with something called 鸡蛋饼 (Jidan Bing), which is sort of like like a Chinese omlette or egg based pancake with vegetables.

15 hours ago, Mad Hatter said:

chest to wall is the preferred way.

I know this is the conventional wisdom, but I think that should be revisited.  The only time I think chest to wall handstands are objectively better is when a person is just getting started and doesn't have the strength or courage to kick up.  Other than that I think back to wall is usually preferable.

1. You can kick up into the back to wall handstand.  Chest to wall is impossible to work on kick-ups

2. Easier to bail from back to wall

3. There are only 3 possible staring positions: piked, arched, or straight.  If you are already straight, it doesn't really make a difference, but from piked or arched you still need to adjust if you want to get straight.  FOR ME, it is way easier to straighten from an arch than from a pike.  Some people may be different, but it certainly isn't universal.

4. Back to wall is much more comfortable (again this probably varies by individual)

I am not saying back to wall is necessarily better for everyone, but the idea that front to wall is better for everyone just doesn't sit with me, because I know that for me, and where I am now, back to wall is much more useful.

15 hours ago, Mad Hatter said:

Absolutely agree with this, although it has taken me a while to accept it.  That said, I was working on handstands again today and a former gymnast buddy gave some pointers on getting a bit straighter.  Shoulder mobility is a big hindrance (maybe 60-70%) and the rest was shoulder tension (shrugging), wrist flexion, and core tension (I was too relaxed).
