Sylvaa is Succinct

Maybe. We know it's not my strong suit.

  • Go to the Gym
  • Run Trails
  • Eat Smart
  • Do work
  • Learn Something
  • Be Happy

More info in spoiler:

Spoiler
  • Hit the gym at least three times per week. I've currently got a program to follow and my husband is trialing a different program this month. I may transition over to what he is doing instead of what I'm doing.
    • My current program is very heavily running based, which is fine, but I'm not in shape to be able to handle that amount of running well. I need to work on a more refined running program until I get to a better point.
    • If I switch over to my husband's workout, I'll incorporate a Nike program into my workout days.
  • I enjoy trail running and it's something I want to improve on. So go once a weekend to do so.
  • I've finally gotten to a point where it doesn't suck to eat. The next step is to see what the food issues actually are. I know it's not gluten, I definitely know it's at least some (if not all) dairy. Might eat some cheese this weekend to see how it goes.
  • Transition back to a tomato approach. Take 15 minutes every morning to figure out a tomato plan and either stick to it or justify why I didn't through alternative tomatoes.
  • I've got three programs on Udemy that I've purchased. I need to do at least one lesson through the week on each of those. Currently finishing off a Yellow Belt class.
  • Recently, I've had either work or personal stuff that has been bringing me down. Of course, being unhappy is okay. But it's not my normal state and impacts a lot for me. So own up to unhappiness, talk it through, and get back to happy.

I've been a bit checked out here recently. WoW Classic has pulled me in, which I knew it would (I'm playing with my old guildies from 15 years ago). Getting sick has made this work as I haven't even been able to workout well for the past two weeks.

Day 1

  • Tried to gym. Coughing issues still, which made it really hard. Did like 15 minutes and gave up.
  • Not a trail day (weekend)
  • No eating issues
  • Only 3 tomatoes - need to reboot making this a priority
  • 35% through my Yellow belt class
  • I wasn't not happy.

Back on the road for a "normal" week. We are having a group of our VP's on site to do some internal meetings tomorrow and I am not looking forward to it. Also, they scheduled a dinner for tomorrow night, which sucks as 1. no idea where they are thinking food-wise and I'm limited to options and 2. neither of my project coworkers are available.

Day 3:

  • Worked out. Trialing a new program with my husband
  • No trails.
  • Food wasn't great. It was a weird day. I learned my lesson.
  • 5 tomatoes. 3 hour am meeting, so I'll take 5
  • 40% through Yellow Belt
  • Not the best day.

I had a work dinner that I was not required to attend, but "required". It was not fun. The thing about consultants is a lot of them live a very blessed life, particularly ones straight out of college. By that I mean that most do not understand the post-college struggle of balancing bills and paychecks. I don't think a lot of them understand how fortunate they are, nor how that is not the norm. It is what it is, but it's also very boring to hear two hours of conversations around trips all over the world and favorite tv shows.

Don't get me wrong, I think that it is awesome that people have the means and opportunity to travel. I know that once my children are on their own, I will be doing more than I do now. But in consulting, there is almost this elitist bent to it - it's not about the experience of being in the place, it's about making it known that you've been there (if that makes sense).

Following!

And that totally makes sense.  That dinner does not sound fun.  Traveling is not just a belt notch for bragging rights.  I think that any Adventurer would recoil (at least internally) in that situation.

Following for the succinct! Or whatever it turns into ^_^

I think that the cult of productivity has turned a lot of “checking the boxes” of life experiences. Having traveled to a place is not the same as having experienced it, but hey, you can check the box.

I didn't answer this earlier! (Sorry) Tomatoes are in reference to my version of the Pomodoro Technique. Traditionally, it is 25 minutes of work / 5 minute break, but I have mini-tasks that I assign as tomatoes. Usually, they take me about 30 minutes to complete, but might take closer to an hour - it depends on what else happens that day. Fridays, I work from home and my Friday goals are to complete any tomatoes I was unable to finish through the rest of the week.

Tomorrow, I am going golfing for the first time ever.

Haha no worries! Pomodoro technique is great for those tasks that are just mind-numbing but still have to get done. Probably something I should incorporate more when I have super distracto brain.

Have fun at golf! Hope the weather  is good for it :)

I think I purchased an Udemy course as well that has been sitting in my Inbox for a month now. I got my hours cut in half and I got fired from another job, so there's really no excuse for me to be doing this... Aside from Fallout. Haha

I guess travel is as susceptible to status-signaling bullshit as anything else, but I agree with Sciread and AoV -- it's hard not to take it as a personal offense, when something so important and life-expanding gets reduced to the level of a stamp collection

It was fun, but not my thing. The golfing was for charity (a local charity that raises funds to make sure AED's are available at schools and children's sporting events), so it was for a good cause. Our foursome was myself, my husband, and two of our friends (these guys are people we have known since high school). Since it was a charity, it was best ball (which basically means that whomever has the best placement / distance is the spot that everyone hits from). We ended up 2 over par, which meant we did not win anything (that's actually not true, we won some door prizes).

While it isn't something I will do normally, it was also not something I seriously disliked. Like, if they needed a fourth for a charity event, I will still go; but our one friend wants to do a golfing weekend and I'm going to pass on that. I had some decent shots and contributed, but meh. Although, fun fact; because women tee off from a different spot, sometimes my first ball was best ball based on that alone.

Other than that, the weekend was pretty uneventful. Gymmed on Friday, but did not make it on the trails this weekend as planned. Next weekend isn't looking so good either, since we'll be in Philly.

That makes sense. And it’s probably easy for the people who don’t value traveling. While I try not to status signal, I’m sure that I do plenty of it generally and I definitely do it to my parents lest they take a lack thereof as an invitation to insert themselves in my business in lieu of a formal invitation.

I haven't done much travel, (really, very little) but now you guys make me not want to talk about it in public.

I understand the "status signaling" aspect, but I really feel like it is important when I feel someone is doing that to check whether it is them being pricks about all the places they've gone, or me being a prick and feeling jealous about not having gone all those places. I easily project my own insecurities on others, and feel others do the same (see what I did there?)

Please take my comments as a gentle nudge to be aware of how you might sound and not as an attack... please.

Consider the difference between "You've never been to Singapore? Oh, you should totally go if you get the chance, it's amazing. The Botanic Gardens are just incredible -- I loved the reflexology path there, and the orchids, and..." and "You've never been to Singapore? Pffft. I've been three times. I've been to Hong Kong three times too. And Macau three times. And..."

My own negative response here was tied very specifically to the status signaling aspect. I can be (and often am) legitimately envious of people who have been places I haven't, but that doesn't mean I think they're pricks. Unless, you know, they act like pricks :)

I acknowledge your point, and appreciate the kind way you made it. You're right: everyone projects insecurities, and I can see how what we're saying could be experienced by someone else in the same way Sylvaa experienced the original conversation that started the whole thing. But while one group's grumbling commiseration can certainly be another's hurtful criticism, and the same statement might sound very different indeed to those different groups, I do think contextuality is important. In a different context, amid a different group of people, I would absolutely be a prick if I didn't approach a conversation like this in a different way.

If you should feel safe talking about it in public anywhere it certainly should be here! If anything I said prompted your reticence, I apologize. Did you enjoy what travel you have done? Was it exciting? Relaxing? Calming, or rejuvenating, or both? Did something happen that is funny now looking back but at the time was nowhere near as much fun? Please talk about it, if you want to!

(Well, as long as Sylvaa says it's OK, because I think I've managed to hijack her thread...sorry...didn't mean to... )
