Ye Slightly Spooky Ranger Guild Hall [General Chat]

"You know, I sometimes wonder if we create these things by believing in them, or if we're just so attuned to this place we know about the weirdness before it happens," muses Jarric, downing his beer. He straps on a buckler, puts a hand on the hilt of his sword, and heads out to see what all the commotion's about.

[Tanktimus the Encourager]

The Bearded Ranger sits sipping his beer, contemplating the noise outside and mutters to himself, "Big Damn Sword or Whackum Stick? Ah, what the hell, why not both?"

He gets up and shoulders both weapons, humming to himself.

[Sloth the Enduring]

Faster than his name might imply, Sloth is in front of the door. “The wee, tiny dinosaurs have hurt no one but the squirrels. I say we let them be.” His grip on his big-ass Hammer tightens.

[Morag]

"I've never seen them in their natural habitat!", Morag ducks around Sloth with a grin as wide as her face, vanishing off into the woods. Her shape is quickly lost among the shadows to watch these beautiful critters.

 

Life is shitty around here on a too huge ratio right now, please allow me to sidestep you like this, Sloth, I promise I will not interfere so much that they attack me. And no, I won't hunt them for sport or food either.

@Sloth the Enduring does not look up from his mug and waves a hand dismissively. "It was just the tiny dinosaurs. Don't worry about it."

 

Sky stands very still, her head slowly tilting toward her shoulder as her eyes grow somehow even wider. "Did - did you say -"

 

An ominous crash splits the air outside the Guildhall. In the distance, there are shrill screams.

Fitnessgurl rises to her feet; quickly slinging her quiver over her shoulder & grabbing her bow. With her short sword already at her side, she moves toward the door where Sloth is standing & then suddenly swerves toward the window, opens it, and is out before anyone can stop her.

She calls back, "I am Fitnessgurl, defender of squirrels!"

[GoodDoug]

GoodDoug slides back up to the bar. "Where the hell did everyone go?"

Sky jumps backward and watches with wide eyes as the group leaps to their feet with weapons drawn, rushing past her and chortling and calling in support of the dinosaurs or the squirrels, variously. "Wait, so -" her voice is lost in the din, so she hesitantly lifts her bow from her shoulder and trips outside after the others - hanging back just a little, at a safe distance.

 

Far ahead a roar rises from the tumbling mob; and moments later a man-sized dinosaur emerges from the forest, eyes startled and furious, with two terrified squirrels dangling from its jaws.

[Kestrel Grey]

Kestrel snags a tray of freshly made cupcakes (icing melting just a little because she never waits for them to cool) and walks toward the woods. The delightful smell preceeds her, and she hopes this dinosaur like being has a sweet tooth.

B'ker slips outside and peers over Sky's shoulder before yelling back through the open door, "Barkeep, better make some room in the cold storage, looks like a lot of dinosaur steaks on the move out here."  

[Elastigirl]

Elastigirl  wanders over to the doorway to see what all the commotion is about. Sighting the dinosaur, who is by now surrounded by the Rangers, she hangs back quietly in the doorway, watching the action. Not very fond of squirrels, and never having seen a dinosaur before, she curiously waits to see what happens next

Fitnessgurl realizes that she cannot get a good shot with her bow-there are too many people. She climbs up the nearest tree & pulls out a specialized arrow; fastening a tranq pod where the arrowhead should be. She aims...releases...and the arrow hits its mark; exploding tranq dust in the dinosaur's face. The dinosaur staggers & falls unconscious to the ground.

[Scaly Freak]

The rather tired-looking half-orc Warrior who has been sitting quietly in a corner of the cabin since back when the door initially opened, watches all these rangers charge out for what undoubtedly will be a fight of some kind. She stays still and quiet, one hand slowly tapping her sword hilt as she considers her next course of action. Decision made, she gets up and begins meandering from table to abandoned table, studying all the equally abandoned plates. She picks up one plate loaded with sausages and eggs, and other protein-filled foods, and one filled with cookies and pastries, and takes them both up to an empty seat by the bar.

" Who cares? They left all their food. Dig in before they come back and notice." Scalyfreak grins, happily munching on a  Danish pastry, and begins eyeing all the appliances behind the bar, searching for a coffee maker.

The chaplain seeing Sloth about to go into apoplexy speaks up.

"Allright, the dinomansaur is down, let's back off. When it comes to we'll try to communicate and see what happens."

Fitnessgurl climbs down from the tree, approaching Tanktimus & Sloth. Noticing that Sloth is red-faced & staring daggers at her, she nevertheless continues her approach.

"The dino should be out for a half hour," She says, "Long enough for us to temporarily relocate the villagers & form a plan."

Sky arrives just in time to stare open-mouthed as the dinomansaur collapses in a heap on the ground, freeing the squirrels to scamper frantically into the woods and vanish. She keeps her bow lifted as she edges around the creature - at least nine feet long from nose to tail, she estimates - noting its heavy scales and thick muscles. It is a jewel-like blue-green on top, fading to pale green below, and its neck and jaws are just as powerfully muscled as its shoulder and leg joints. 

 

"Fitnessgurl," she says slowly, watching intently for any movement and quickly dabbing her forehead with her wrist, "is this tranquilizer more likely to make him dazed when he wakes up, or ... aggressive?"

"Fascinating," mutters Jarric, crouching down next to the creature. He touches the back of it's neck, gingerly at first, and then strokes it more confidently. "We could tie it up while it's out," he says, addressing the gathered rangers, "but I'd be worried about it hurting itself if it tried to break its bonds. Is there somewhere we can contain it whilst we calm it down?"

Fitnessgurl looks at Sky and says, "He should be dazed when he wakes up. The pod contained a mix of Valerian Root & Passiflora which acts as a sedative and muscle relaxant." 

Fitnessgurl studies the dino and continues, "Although I'm not entirely familiar with reptilian physiology & so mayyybe we should erect a containment field."

"I think the bartender still has some gear from when we did that Star Trek themed mini challenge a few years ago. Somebody go ask him for a portable force field emitter. "

Fitnessgurl returns with the emitter and asks, "Anyone know how to set this up? Because I have nooo idea."

Sky raises an eyebrow and takes the emitter to deploy the kickstand, reasonably certain she remembers where the "on" button is. "Did he have more than one of these? They work better when you have at least three, especially for a raptor this size ..."

Fitnessgurl runs back to get two more. In a few minutes, she is back. "Your wish is my command," She says, grinning and bowing.

Sky deploys the other emitters and turns them on after only a few minutes of fumbling, successfully enclosing the dinomansaur within the confines of their beams - and none too soon. Moments later, the creature's muscles tense up and twitch twice, violently, and its eyes roll open.

 

It turns its gaze directly toward @Sloth the Enduring.

"Let me into the containment zone," Sloth asks earnestly; and with hands shaking, Sky pauses the emitters long enough for him to approach the dazed, weakened creature. It does not move as he kneels beside it, but Sky keeps her bow raised, watching as they make eye contact and seem to exchange nonverbal thoughts.

 

"Is it communicating with you?" she asks, as it gets two legs under it and attempts to push itself up. "Is it a reptile? Or is it something else?"
