I Guess Theophilus Is Really Into Threes?

All the best things come in threes.

See?

So I have three, three-themed challenges. So meta.

Challenge 1: Replace regular 2 mile runs with 3 mile runs, at least 3 days a week. I pushed my long runs to four miles on the last challenge, and now 3 feels much comfortable. I think I'm ready to make 3 my "normal" distance. Plus, I signed up for a Ragnar in May, and need to have a decent base before winter sets in.

Challenge 2: Send a V3 boulder problem by the end of this challenge. I'm getting about half the V2 problems at my gym now, and think I'm ready to take on some V3s. I don't expect this will be easy

Challenge 3: Three real meals a day. That means real food (no crap), really focused (not multitasking), and real tracking. This is kinda a mushy goal, but it's a basic enough frame to keep me in line, I think. And because I couldn't find a good three-themed eating gif, I'm adding a booze goal too: no more than 3 drinks per week.

Cool?

Something unusual happened yesterday. Very unusual.

My day got off to a bad start: behind on schoolwork, eating like garbage, etc. etc. Nothing too outside the normal rhythms but feeling generally in a bit of a funk. So, I make it through my day and resolve that I'll go to the rock gym when the kids go down.

I get to the gym and it's positively packed. They've reset a few of the walls, and I'm watching these people do a V3 that is less strength-oriented and more of a  balance-focused slab climb. After a little warm up, I go for it. First try, I get about half-way. Then I regroup and try again. I struggle through the middle bit but I get through, and I send it. All the way.

I was, suffice it to say, shocked. I thought this was a huge stretch goal that I might be lucky to hit at the end of this challenge, but I nailed it on day 1. I'm not entirely sure what to do with myself now. Haha.

Now, granted, there are a lot of other V3s I can't do yet, and a number of V1/2 overhang climbs that are still beyond me, but this was a huge boost to my confidence. I'm going to retool my goals a bit here in the next few days to focus on some of those somehow; I just need to find a clever way to relate it back to the number three somehow...

Obviously you have to master 3 different V3s.

^^^ That.

I mean, that certainly makes a lot of sense. Three V3s it is!

Decent day today. A little better than average food-wise. Still reached for a coke for the mid-afternoon slump, though. I need to replace that with a better habit.

I went to the rock gym tonight. It was crazy busy again. After a little climbing I decided to stop because things just weren’t clicking. Hit the treadmills and logged 3 miles instead. Much better use of my time tonight.

Replace cola with hot tea or coffee?

Do you go to thr climbing gym?

Yep, definitely need to find a new mid-afternoon beverage. I do black coffee in the morning, so it wouldn't be too hard to just repeat that choice again.

And yeah, I do all my climbing indoors. Haven't had the courage to get on a real rock yet.

Two things have happened since my last update:

1. We got a puppy (YAY!)

2. I got a really nasty cold (BOO!)

Both have conspired against me to keep me from eating well or exercising. I think I'm on the mend now, so hope to be back out on the road by the end of the week.

Yeah I've never climbed outdoors, and it's been like twenty years since I did any indoors. However, I have such good memories of the experience, I want to join a gym by me in Concord. I have a hard time doing actual exercise, something like climbing can fool me into exercising with a fun activity.

The cold I got was incredibly persistent, coupled with the sleep deprivation of the new pup, and suffice it to say, this has not been my strongest performance. After almost four weeks off, I did finally get out for a run yesterday. Climbing has been hit or miss (mostly miss). Booze started strong but deteriorated a bit over the last two weeks.

I think I'm going to chalk this challenge up to a loss and regroup for the next one.

You nailed one of your challenges in your first day, it wasn't a total loss.

I'm glad you are feeling better.
