Burpees, Books, Brainwork, and Bodywork

Recommended Posts

I really enjoyed the simplicity of my last challenge, so I thought I would continue it, but this time I'm adding in a new section called Bodywork. This is where I'll fit in actions I plan to take to care for my body, including meditation, nutrition, Wim Hof practices, running, and bodyweight workouts. And, as usual, there will be some bonus content, as well.

giphy.gif

Goal #1 -- Burpees: At least 30 burpees per day -- This is based on a physical challenge I saw online. As most of you know, the burpee is one of the best bodyweight workouts, an excellent "bang for your buck" kind of workout that can be integrated into other movements and moments throughout the day. It is permissible to change these up and try a variety of burpee types.

giphy.gif

Goal #2 -- Books: Read any book for at least 20 minutes per day -- Seriously, I love to read, and I love books, but in the midst of my busy life I often neglect to make time to just sit still with a book. This is to continue to develop a daily reading discipline.

giphy.gif

Goal #3 -- Brainwork: Learn about/study something every day -- As a teacher, I should be setting the example of the importance of lifelong learning. Articles, podcasts, websites, NPR, documentaries, Youtube videos, TED Talks, apps, anything that teaches me something. This goal can include schoolwork but must be separate from goal #2.

giphy.gif

Goal #4 -- Bodywork: Take better care of my body For this challenge, I plan to eat as close to Paleo as possible, meditate daily, use the Wim Hof Method app for WHM exercises daily, and use Darebee as a reference for daily bodyweight workouts, as well. I also plan to run at least three days a week. This goal does not include the 30 burpees or my participation in the Darebee Dare PVP.

And that's that. I'll be floating around to view other fellow Adventurers as often as I can, as well as participating in the Darebee Dare PVP.

I have been struggling with the same thing for the past month. I was on a roll...and rolled right off the track. But I am making it more intentional this challenge as well.

It's amazing how easy it is to avoid the things we love most. In many areas of life I have both rolled off the track and faced a full head-on collision. Thanks for understanding and for reminding me that I'm not alone.

Hey, the important part is that you are working to get back on track. The battle is only lost when we give up. When we get back up, are shortcomings are merely painful learning experiences.

Burpees:

  • 10 in the morning
  • 10 in the afternoon
  • 10 in the late evening

Books:

  • started reading The Nickel Boys by Colson Whitehead. It's the first book by Whitehead I have read since reading his first novel (The Intuitionist) in college; so far so good.

Brainwork:

  • listened to NPR on the way to work, as well as today's episode of Up First and an episode of Invisibilia that talked about how some kids seem to be "memory catchers," as in they seem to pick up other people's thoughts and memories, people they'd never meet who were already dead.

Bodywork:

  • one rotation of WHM breathing
  • cold shower: 1:30 minutes warm, 3:30 minutes cold
  • took the dogs outside while barefoot and shirtless; it was 42F outside
  • completed the Darebee Daily Dare: 200 squat punches
  • breakfast: key lime Greek yogurt, banana, coffee with steamed heavy cream
  • snack: butter crips crackers with lemon-pepper tuna
  • lunch: Brussel sprouts, meatballs slow-cooked in chili sauce and grape jelly
  • dinner: whole milk, pork rinds, grapes (I wasn't very hungry this evening)
  • walked a total of 12,026 steps
  • completed day one of the Darebee program Hero's Journey
  • swam in the river for about 5 minutes; yes, it was cold but not unbearable, and the air temperature was around 70F.

Sorry, but I have an embarrassing confession. I don't really listen to any true crime podcasts. Not because I don't think I would like them, just because I'm not really that interested. At least not to seek them out or subscribe to them. I have listened to a few podcasts that dealt with crime-related topics, like White Lies, which is about the murder of James Reeb, a white pastor and Civil Rights activist. A lot of the NPR podcasts that I listen to involve investigative journalism, but I don't listen to any podcasts that are specifically within the "true crime" genre.

Now worries
True crime is a particular taste.
I’ve been picky with mine and tried to search for ones that have a true ending where the bad guy is caught or meets their ends in a poetic justice fashion.

The main two I’ve liked were Dirty John where it has a clear beginning, middle, and end... and Up And Vanished where the original podcast creator get more paranoid and vague as real evidence starts to stack up in a real legal case and he’s legally bound not to give certain info away. And in the end someone is brought to justice to be held accountable of their actions.

S town might be more your cup of tea since it’s a short mini series about an individual living in a small town. It’s only a few episodes long, but is still an amazing listen. I don’t want to spoil anything here and it’s best if you go in blind.

I’ll have to listen to some of your choices. It’s been awhile since I’ve gone down the podcast rabbit hole.

Add me to the list wondering what this is

Sorry, gang. It's been a rough few days. I had a breakdown Saturday that was provoked but also bad enough that it was evident there are underlying issues that need to be addressed. So I did something that I've been avoiding for too long: I made an appointment with a therapist. My wife and daughter have said that I haven't been the same since my grandpa died. Honestly, I probably should have started therapy after his death.

So last week's challenge goals are pretty much a bust. I did maybe 10 burpees Wednesday and Thursday but none after that. I did some schoolwork and read a few more pages of The Nickel Boys. I also went running with my buddy Rick early Saturday morning, even though it was very dark and the temperature was 29F. I also ran later in the morning by myself on a road I've never run before. It was an out and back run with a steady 135 ft. climb in less than a mile, then back down the other side another 1/4 mile and back again.

The rest of my Saturday was shit. I'm just going to be honest. I don't want to get into the details, but it ended with my wife and three of our daughters going trick-or-treating while I stayed home with our teenage daughter, who deals with her own diagnosed mental health issues and is the one who set me off. I full-on raged and exhibited some self-destructive behaviors of my own. I knew after this that I need help.

I'm trying again, gang. I got up early this morning, but I wasted too much time just browsing Facebook. I did get the daily dare done, took a cold shower, took the dogs outside while shirtless and shoeless (32F), and did 5 burpees (I would have done more, but the ground was frosty and my hands were burning). I'm hoping to go for a run later this afternoon.

All I can do right now is keep moving forward. I could use as many prayers, well wishes, good vibes, and funny memes you can offer.

Prayers and well wishes are on their way.

Dunno if they’re funny, but I’ll start sending them.

I’m glad you made that appointment. We all need help sometimes. Recognizing it is wise. If you ever need an ear, I’m here and happy to talk.  (Even though I’m about to disappear from the Internet for the afternoon).

I did something that I've been avoiding for too long: I made an appointment with a therapist.

But here you are far superior to me. Instead of acting, my low self esteem kicked in and I again ignored the obvious.

I struggle with my own problems and even that I know I should contact a therapist, I constantly diminish the importance of my issues and avoid acknowledging my problems are real. Maybe your example will inspire me and help me break this barrier, and reach for professional help. Thank you for sharing this here. I wish you the best with dealing with your issues AND your challenge. I love your goals - especially books, because I too struggle with finding some time to read.

I absolutely CAN run on caffeine and hatred. But only with a dash of milk.

Challenges' status:

Not gonna Challenge anymore for now. I took Steve's words and started thinking in days and years. Challenges are just short-term distractions.

Thank you for sharing your struggles, as well. I can understand diminishing the importance of your issues because that's what I did for years. On the surface, I am upbeat and extroverted and cheerful most of the time. But under the surface there's more anger than I like to admit. That's why I put it off as long as I did.

Thank you for visiting my challenge. I hope you stick around. Feel free to share and comment anytime.

I think it is common for some types of personalities or people who grew up in certain environments to appear one way, and try to even convince yourself that you feel that way, while deeply feeling another.

I grew up feeling pressure to appear perfect. Not just as the oldest grandchild and golden boy of the family, but as a Christian witness.  I mean, my thoughts were that people needed to want to be me because if I wasn’t perfect, I failed God not in not being perfect and in helping other know God.

Clearly, not a view I take anymore. But it’s easy to fall back into if I’m not vigilant.

tl; dr: You’re worthwhile and your problems are worth discovering and working through!

You and I have talked about this sort of thing before, especially the pressure we feel to set an example not just as Christians but as Christian men.  I have often felt that when I mess that image up (or at least when I think I do), I can be really down on myself about it, or I put on my super-happy-all-the-time-even-if-I-am-struggling-Christian-nice-guy face because that's what we're supposed to do, right?

Like you, I don't think this way anymore, but the temptation to fall back into that mindset as sort of a coping mechanism is very real.

I guess now is as good a time as any to do an update:

  • been doing Wim Hof breathing in the morning, 2-3 rotations of just over 2 minutes each, and cold showers (1 minute warm, 4 minutes cold)
  • still taking the dogs outside while shirtless and shoeless; temperatures have been anywhere from 30-45F
  • I haven't been doing burpees, but I visited the gym Tuesday and today, and I went for a run both days. I found a route not far from where I work that takes me to the top of a small mountain; it is a 150 ft climb in just over 1/4 mile, so it is steep. It also goes through some back roads surrounded by woods and then drops back down, which is excellent for sprinting (and working on control). The only down side is there are a few dogs that I have to be careful of. Today, I had to chase one off because it was trying to chase me.
  • Nutrition hasn't been terrible, but I have been snacking a bit too much on leftover Halloween candy.
