RogueLibrarian: Re-Entry

Recommended Posts

Hello, team --

The-Man-Who-Fell-To-Earth-david-bowie-40

I disappeared from the forums about three months ago and this seems like a good time to return to earth.

Goals are simple this time around -- 3x weekly workout. Usually for me that's two karate classes during the week and a weekend kickboxing class, but substitutions may occur. It's been a couple of months since I've had my regular habits feeling really strong, so making this my focus -- including during holiday travel -- will help get me back on my feet.

HI NERDS, I MISSED YOU

0fbVrTY.png

I'm good. I had kind of an anxiety meltdown that I will talk about a little more soon, but I'm good and I'm taking care of myself.

Edit: how'd your LARP-thingy go BTW? That was November?

More about that soon too, but the short version is that it was huge and pretty amazing. I have never had the experience of being part of a team on such a big creative endeavor, and I came away feeling pretty awesome. Nearly everyone seemed to love it. We had players come from Finland, London and Sweden. We had an alien autopsy. We had General Martok. We had so many jumpsuits. Don't let me forget to post some pictures this week.

I'm trying to get my fitness routine back in the swing of things, at probably the hardest time of year to do so, hence the very very simple challenge parameters this time. Readjusting my eating habits post Thanksgiving too.

Okay, here's a LARP report.

I spent a good bit of the year writing for Outbound Hope, a new sci-fi LARP that a friend recruited me to work on. Two long weekends in November, I flew from Atlanta to Michigan to help run it. Our fictional setting was the Ascendant Dawn, the run-down flagship of a colonial fleet setting out from Earth through a stargate to settle a new world. (It goes badly. They get lost on the way.)

Our real-life setting was the USS Edson, a Cold War era destroyer that's now a museum, and that our director somehow convinced them to let us rent out and turn into a spaceship playset for two weeks. One of the GMs stayed up 30 hours straight setting up a computer network. I helped run a lot of ethernet cable up ladders and around corners. (Funny thing about 60-year-old warships: they're not really set up to run a lot of space heaters and computers at the same time.) Every trip on and off the ship (e.g. to use the bathroom) required going up a 25-foot narrow and slightly wobbly open-bottomed flight of stairs over the river. The Edson is over 400 feet long, and going from the bridge at the topmost foreward deck to engineering at the aft lower deck required not only traversing that distance, but going down four very narrow ladders through a small opening with an edge positioned perfectly to crack skulls. It was also the coldest I've ever been for the longest I've ever been.

We were the Space Janitors, the only people on board wearing safety orange. In character, we were the maintenance staff of the ship and players were directed to just kind of ignore us most of the time. Out of character, we were in charge of "cleaning up" anything that went wrong, whether that was plot stuff or broken technology or anxious players who needed to retreat for a pep talk.

I had incredible stage fright going into this thing, but it turned out to be an amazing experience. We had players come from Finland, London and Sweden. There were genuine moments of despair and triumph. Lots of people, including the GMs, cried at various points. JG Hertzler who played General Martok on DS9 was our admiral. We had an alien first contact and an alien autopsy with organs that the medical scanners could scan. We had ship battles and space marine firefights. We had political turmoil. I made lots of friends. It was awesome.

Pictures in the next post.

Engineering was in the actual engine room of the ship. They controlled power to ship's systems and repairs, and it had real-world effects on the bridge during combat.

That looked super cool. Now I want to run around a mothballed ship.

As an aside, there used to be a really cool web series called Space Janitors, which, sadly, has mostly disappeared.

If you've got 25 minutes, I'm watching a video report that one of our players made that's pretty delightful.

Thank you all for welcoming me back! I'm going to try to do better about making the forums part of my routine again, because I miss it when I'm not around. I've made some good friends here.

Week 0: Finishing up with a kickboxing class. (Forgot to take a sweaty selfie.)

My workout routine has fallen by the wayside for several weeks now. I'm looking to course correct that, including pulling together a simple exercise plan for holiday travel to visit family.

WELL. That is relevant to today's plan.

I realized that I have been bailing on karate classes some because I came back after travel and was feeling way behind everyone on the techniques -- and test is coming up next week, so there's going to be mock tests and lots of focus on the technique that I don't feel confident about. So I was just not going.

THEN it took me a little longer to realize (I'm sometimes slow) that that's just shooting myself in the foot and missing exercise party (tm KarinaJean). So tonight I think I'm going to just do a kickboxing class instead; I'll get my workout in, not feel guilty about missing classes I'm paying for, not have to stress over technique. Anxiety demon will not win this week. (To be clear, nobody but me was giving me any shit about it.)

I will try to remember to do a sweaty post-class selfie. :)

I'm really glad I went. I worked my ass off, feel good for having done it, and my instructor mentioned that even though I'm not testing for a belt this time, six classes carry over into the next test cycle so I'll have more flexibility in my schedule next time. (Testing for beginner purple belt next.)
