Having lived here for so long and having had a unique window into the inner workings of the government I would suggest that the views of the government are far more fractured and divergent than than what appears on the surface.

True for most groups, really. The 'party line' is rarely held to by 100% of the population of the group.

Only for minorities. The US is very clear on that precedent, too. ;)

I think the US has in fact had an epidemic on that order. The 1918 Spanish flu pandemic was massive, and had a death rate far higher than the coronavirus (so far; that, of course, may change). What the US didn't have was a population as large as China's, but it was an epicenter in that pandemic, and that flu infected a third of the world and killed, well, an unknown number of people, but definitely more than WWI and possibly more than WWI and WWII together. It's hard to overstate how massive it was. Cities in the US ran out of coffins. There definitely were quarantines in the US, but they were imposed at the city level, not the federal, and in most cities they only controlled curfews and closures for public gathering spots, not individual movement.

That's going to be part of the issue in the US; the separation of powers between federal, state, and local authorities makes it much less likely that quarantine will be handled by federal officials, and the US is generally less likely historically to impose quarantines today affect individual liberty. (Though this does not apply to anything handled by customs and immigration, clearly. A border quarantine to stop infection entering the country is both federal and guaranteed to involve a ton of incarceration. They clearly would go after people for lying to federal officials about their travel history in international airports, though I'm fairly sure they'd only actually apply it to foreign nationals, and mostly the brown ones. No white Swiss or British citizen is going to sit in customs detainment, let's be honest. And going by recent targeting of Iranian-Americans at customs and deportations of Hispanic US citizens, possibly it'd apply to brown citizens. It's not that the US isn't also a police state, it's just that only part of the population lives in it.)

I don't see anything I disagree with in there, but it is after midnight so I may have more to say after I consider bit a bit more.

Saturday

Much of the same again.   Last night we started to watch 12 monkeys but we lost interest after about 20 minutes and changed to some space prison break movie (I don't know the English name)   Tonight we watched Carriers but it was not really about the disease but life after the apocolypse. Neither of us liked it that much, but we did finish it. Any recommendation on a good infection movie?

I've had a friend swear by Annihilation, and Zombieland's a lot of fun. Shawn of the Dead, if it hasn't been seen yet, is mandatory.

Also, FWIW, as far as the indepth conversation of socialism v capitalism was concerned, I got what I wanted. My sensei - with whom I'd broke up that year (and I remember because this whole thing started as a debate about the wokeness of Captain Marvel and it was the same year. "But Kishi that was last year." Listen. It's been a long year already for 5 weeks in.) was a Marxist Leninist in addition to everything else, and while he was big on discourse, he wasn't big on keeping it civil. If he thought I was wrong, he'd lecture me before class, he'd lecture me after class, and then he'd message me on FB to lecture me more. It was never enough for me to give him the space and to take it in and think about it; no, I had to come around to his way of thinking because he was right and I was wrong.

I mention his convictions only because that was kind of the seed for me. Having it to look back on, I can't help but wonder if he was acting out on some bad programming he'd never bothered to investigate.

Anyway, as far as I was concerned in having that talk, I honestly just wanted to present well and be civil and even hospitable as it was happening in one of my spaces here. The whole time we were going back and forth, I was worried that I was going to say something wrong and that I was going to alienate a bunch of people that I liked and whom I wanted to like me too. Because civil discourse is something of a novelty in my psychological landscape and I really didn't want to live out the pattern that had been ground into me.

Given how people are talking about it even now almost a year later, it kind of sounds like it worked. I did wind up being conciliatory because I'm not too interested in being dogmatic about a given approach, because I think that's kind of utopian and that doesn't seem very practical to me. I do still believe in the ideal of "the greatest good for the greatest amount of people with the least amount of harm," but I do want to attempt humility and admit that I don't necessarily know what that looks like.

So. I got what I wanted. It kind of sounds like we all did. I don't think our Win conditions were mutually exclusive. :)

Anyway, hope you're holding up well. This whole situation sounds really incredibly stressful. It's one thing to rest because you want to, but forced rest and confinement sounds... honestly kind of awful. There any word yet on when things are gonna get back to normal?

Very true, but I was actually referring to with ing the Party Leadership itself. While there is only 1 Party, with ing the Party there are at least 2 factions* that have been historically vying for power withing the party in very much the same way the Democrats and Republicans vy for power in the US system. In fact, the elctoral system within the party is almost identical to the nomination process in IS political parties, with voting limited to only party members (which most of the population isn't) and they are basically limited to whomever the party puts forth as candidates. I would say there are more shenanigans in the Chinese system, but honestly I'm not even sure about that.

* Tuan Pai, or unity faction, which includes most leaders of the Youth League (which in turn is the feeder program for the Party membership)  is the faction that Hu Jintao represented. The Jiang faction (named for Jiang Zemin) and included most of the "princelings" or children of the founding fathers, including President Xi. This faction is now being called the Xi faction.  I have a friend who did a very good rap about it: http://theredprintalbum.com

We watched Annihilation in the theatre but it was a bit too much headology for us.  28 Days Later is one we saw on the list that looked like it had potential.

I haven't, but I have seen tons of ads for it. Is it any fun?

Wraith is doing well (she is certainly eating better than when she was with us) and we get videos of her pretty often. We will be very happy when we can be reunited with her.

I'm really glad you got what you wanted out of the discussion. It was particularly memorable in part because political discussions at NF are (thankfully) rare and any discussions here are almost universally civil. As far as winning, I was merely being facetious because there is no way to win at those kinds of debates :)

Sunday

Not much happened again today. However, we were looking at the masks we have and it turns out that the 3M masks we got are fake. Not only fake, but terrinly made fakes. I suspect they not only would do little to nothing, but the smell of chemicals is overpowering and I suspect that wearing the mask for an extended period of time could be extremely hazardous.  We have spent most of the evening contacting anyone else who got sent masks from this batch and letting them know.

......

Well, the challenge is over so I guess I ought do a summary or something.

Things started out well, getting a good 3 weeks of food Bingo in. As of the last meal, @Mad Hatter was in the lead so I am going to ahead and confirm her the winner and award her a grand case of self satisfaction for a job well guessed :)

Everything else was kind of meh and I can't even remember what else I was going to be focusing on. I suppose I could go back and look, but at this point I am not going to even bother.  Given the extenuating circumstances, I am going to give myself a pass on pretty much everything and call this challenge a win.

Looking forward to seeing everyone for the next one 🤗
