Strickland5 looks 40 in the eye

Well damn I'm about to hit 40!

tumblr_nn01x1cK9w1u9snqno1_500.gifv

How'd this happen?! Just yesterday I was turning 30 !

4b2.gif

At the very least I'm in a better place than I was at 30. While I didn't manage to keep all the weight I lost off I've kept most of it off, last I check I'm 25 lbs lighter than back in 2010 - so that's a win in my book.

Looking back I've done a few things since turning 30 -

  • Gotten married
  • Ran 3 marathons (among other things)
  • Moved across the country
  • Wrote some homebrew D&D modules
  • Traveled more than I ever thought I would!

Now we push forward into THE FUTURE!

Alright maybe not THAT future ... perhaps something nicer?

DEFINITELY not that one... guess I'll have to do it myself!

QUEST 1 - Food Logging

giphy.gif

I am going to get back to logging my food! This is to get base line on what I'm doing right / wrong - I'm not going to track

QUEST 2 - Keep going to Orange Theory!

IMG_20190516_152515-ANIMATION.gif

The wife and I do best with group fitness and paying for classes - we will keep going to OTF as well as doing a weekend run. Yes I know this is more Ranger than Scout but sometimes you got to mix things up!

QUEST 3- No device after 8 pm

UMH_C_BEDROOM-LIGHTING.gif

Put the phone away before bed in homes of getting better sleep.

However I will be using my Kindle for ...

QUEST 4 - Read more!

uncle-fester.jpg

I've not done much reading of late and honestly it makes me feel like I'm getting dumber.

So for 2020 I want to read at least 1 non-fiction book a month. This is pretty low hanging fruit but habits start with these small steps.

I've done a bad job all things considered ... I have to apologize for pretty much 2016 onward.

Kicked off 2020 with a OTF workout, putting up new blackout curtains, installing a third magnetic strip for spices, and having the traditional southern meal of pork, blackeye peas, greens, and cornbread!

Have you picked a NF book to read yet?

I got a copy of LikeWar: The Weaponization of Social Media a while back and think that'll be my first book out the gate.

I guess I'm still using my computer in the evenings, but it's amazing how much time turning off the TV has gotten me.  And with that extra time, I would like to read as well.

Keep us posted.  Hoping to hear really good things.  Oh and about hitting 40.  40 is the new 30.

For my book, Dark Barbarian won out

https://www.instagram.com/p/B69ke4RJNWM/

I actually started my food logging started yesterday to try to jump start the habit. Didn't realize gin was so caloric ;)

Went to the 5a15 OTF class this morning. It was a Strength day. On the dreadmill that means incline & floor work (weights / TRX / Rower) is high weight low rep counts. Won't lie doing base pace (5.3mph / ~11:19 min/mile ) at 7% incline was tough ! We did 1 minute 1%, 1 minute 7%, 1min 1%, 45sec 7%, 45 sec 6%, 1min 1% then 2 minutes of 30sec drops from 7% - so 30 at 7, 30 at 6, 30 at 5, 30 at 4.... before we moved to the floor for 6.5 minutes of various chest/arm/core work. That was round 1, round 2 was the same save for starting at 6% rather than 7 and different work on the floor... and round 3 was at 5% vs 6% with yet another series of floor exercises.

OTF today was Power! Dreadmill was 3 blocks of 6 minutes each

Block 1

60 sec all out

60 sec walking recovery

Repeat 2 times

Block 2

45 sec all out

75 sec walking recovery

Repeat

Block 3 as you might have guessed

30 sec all out

90 sec walking recovery

Repeat

I increased my all out by 0.5mph each block (6 to 6.5 to 7) and pushed to 7.5 on the last round

Floor was squat thrust sets (decreasing set count 8/6/4/2) with 150m row between each set

Then 8 sumo squats (50lbs), 16 total skater side to side lunge, 8 per side weighted step back lunges (25lb dumbbells in each hand) and 10 plank jacks which we repeated till time was up

Food log went well - seems I MIGHT be under eating again as I've 1500 calories left 😕

Enjoying Dark Barbarian - didn't know if I was going or not but it is introducing me to different contemporaries of Robert Howard as well as providing critical thinking on his writing

The exclamation point makes it even better! How were you feeling after that workout? It sounds like the dreadmill circuits make you pretty sore (lot of time running pretty darned fast).

Yep I was all the sore! We did ESP day (aka endurance, strength and POWER!) which included going from 11% power wall (3.5mph) for a minute to all out (7mph @ 1%) for the next minute ...oh lorde!

I'm horrible about checking these forums - who let me be a guild leader again!?

  1. Logging food is going well overall, is tough when you go out to log correctly but I'm trying.
  2. Been very consistently going to OTF - 515 classes are tough but worth it
  3. The no-device is going okay but not great - need to do better at this one
  4. Device in bed limits the reading which I'm failing out ... so I need to stash the phone and pickup the book!
