Yikes, sick + no sleep is decidedly less than ideal. Congratulations on getting cast for the Lyra show, though

Thanks! It's actually more than just lyra - it includes silks, trapeze, sling, lyra, tippy lyra, rope, straps, contortion, and even invented apparatus! I've been cast in the lyra/straps combo number, specifically on lyra, which is good because my body and straps are not friends. I am not that level of masochist. I'm really excited about it because I've been mostly focused on silks for years with brief flirtations with lyra here and there and I do love it, so this is the kick in the pants I need to go and improve fast.

Cool that you got into the show! But please take care of yourself. I understand that you want to keep up your skills and get in enough practice time, but perhaps doing yoga AND lyra is a bit excessive? Maybe it'd be better to really focus your energy on what you need to do for the show and use the rest for a speedier recovery.

Yeah, I thought that, too, so I blew off yoga day entirely, took a nap for an hour, took some Advil cold and sinus, and just focused all of my limited energy on lyra. We had another bad night last night (at least it was only 2-5am of baby screaming this time, so... improvement?), but I feel no worse than I did yesterday, minus some pretty intense shoulder DOMS. I'll take it.

Okay, so yesterday:

Tracking, check. Caloric deficit, check. NO CHOCOLATE, CHECK. Aerial, check. I even made myself an the little one a yummy veggie-ful lunch/dinner that counted towards the mini challenge (roasted spaghetti squash with garlic, mushrooms, chicken, and some heirloom marinara plus a tiny bit of parmesan) and will give me leftovers for today, which means one less thing to do. The baby continues to battle her cold and most likely the 9 month sleep regression, so home is not a relaxing haven, let's just say that. Work is hard due to this (I work a corporate job but from home, which makes getting things done difficult when things like this happen), but I muddled through somehow.

Amazingly, the advanced lyra class was GREAT. I went into it assuming I'd crap out quickly, but then I got through everything, even the super hard combo not everyone was able to complete, AND I faced my terror of ankle hangs (despite my two perma-broken toes womp womp) and...

SUCCESS WAS HAD!

I am thoroughly sore and tired today, but hey, still, that was a pretty good day. I'm supposed to lift today and I think I'll swap the planned upper body workout for lower body instead and take it fairly easy. Ideally, I'll get to it during one of baby's naps. Pray for me that she naps.

ETA: I also finished my first book of 2020! Does This Baby Make Me Look Straight? Confessions of a Gay Dad by Dan Bucatinsky. It had some very relatable moments and I'm glad my reading goal is halfway done for the month already!

Aaah ankle hang, it's quite the exercise in pain tolerance. :D Nice work.

Thanks! Considering my busted foot, I always assumed I'd never get this trick, so I'm weirdly impressed with myself.

Tried heel/talon hang as well, but lol, not strong enough. That one hurts my toes a lot less, though, so I'll work on it, maybe?

She... did not. Pretty much had to hold her to get her to sleep, so we switched off doing that, then took her to the pediatrician to discover that on top of the monster virus that's got us all reeling, she's also got ear infections in BOTH EARS, which might explain some of the misery and the not-sleeping. So now she's on antibiotics, which I'm not super thrilled about, but last time she had an ear infection that had her feeling more like herself in just a couple days, so... fingers crossed.

I did manage to get some lifting done yesterday during the brief stretch baby slept independently for nap number two. I only did a 5x5 squat set at the same sad weight as last week, because I was feeling so sick and run down that I figured doing something was better than doing nothing but also this was not the moment to push myself. Checked that box, got through 50% of the work I should have finished (again something > nothing), bribed baby to eat by making her ravioli (she's not had much of an appetite, but that did get her to eat at least SOMETHING), fell into bed by 10. My wife, bless her, took the monitor and slept with it in the guest room so I could sleep uninterrupted because I had to get up at 5am today to drive up to the mountains and work from my family's rental property which I manage. There's some work that needs to be done up here and this is the one day all month that it isn't rented out to someone, so it basically had to be today, and since it is my parents' 40th (!!!!!!!!!!!!!) wedding anniversary today, I wasn't about to suggest one of them go do it, so here I am despite being quite unwell. It's just under 2 hours to drive each way, so doing it twice in one day is going to be kind of exhausting. Honestly, though, the uninterrupted sleep 10-5 was the best I've had in a week, so I don't feel too awful. AND it's beautiful and quiet up here, I have a killer view and a pot of tea, and a friend of mine offered to get up at the crack of dawn and come up here with me (bless her), so I have someone to keep me company on the drives and help dismantle my mother's over-the-top Christmas decorations.

I'm supposed to go to aerial tonight, and though I am very fatigued, I think I probably have to go, since after the class I'm signed up for, some of the people in my scene for the show are meeting to discuss music and a few other things.

I should probably track current stats, so here we go:

  • Lifting: 1/2 this week
  • Aerial: 2/2 this week (I will way overshoot this)
  • Tracking: 2/3 days this week (I didn't realize this challenge started Sunday and not Monday, so I really didn't bother, and whatever, I don't care enough to go back and figure out how much cheese and bread I had at brunch)
  • Books: 1/2 for the month

Yeah. It's more like... I'm already signed up for class and I told the teacher I was coming if I could get the night free, so I can't just show up for the meeting and not class because... I feel bad? And again with the getting docked a session if I cancel at this late hour. Basically, this whole week is a hot mess (listen, my challenge title is very accurate), but I'm going to make it through somehow. Eventually I will be healthy and well-rested again. Hopefully. Probably. Maybe?

To be fair, I made fairly easy goals so I could overshoot and feel good about at least one thing in my life.

Happy anniversary to your parents!!!! also, the cabin sounds lovely, although somewhat of a PITA today. Hoping for a smooth drive home and fun practice this evening :)

Yeah, I was (still am) livid. Their justification was, "since you adopted your child, you don't require time for physical recovery, which is the purpose of maternity leave." Like... have any of them ever... met a newborn...........

Per my wife, she actually slept through the night (!!!) and her mood is much improved today, though her appetite is still missing and she still looks pretty sick. Improvement! The magic of modern medicine.

It's thankfully a condo and not a cabin, so I don't have to do any work outdoors. The drive up was nice, and I will admit to leaving my work computer running for 45 minutes while I power-napped on the sofa. I'm glad I made it up here. it's so quiet. No one is crying. I think it might be worth the drive and will actually help me be LESS tired in class. One can hope. ☺️

Got my butt handed to me by advanced fabric class yesterday, so I'm quite sore and fatigued today. Sleep debt is partially made up, but I'm still insanely tired, sneezing a lot, and coughing a little. I was initially supposed to lift today, but I think I'm calling a rest day. Maybe I'm being lazy, but I'm pretty sure I'm just listening to my body. I have practice with my scene partner tomorrow night, so that will be 4 (!!!) aerial sessions this week, which is super unusual and definitely calls for adjustments elsewhere.

I mean, in defense of my statement, when I do get lazy (and I have been getting lazy A LOT these last months, as my current out-of-shape state will attest), lifting is the first thing to go. I really do think the rest was needed, though. I actually feel like my shoulders are going to not die at practice with my scene partner tonight.

Another full night of sleep! Yeah! Still under the weather but I'm breathing better and I don't need cold medicine to get through the day anymore. Celebrating by making a giant pot of 10-bean soup (some of the beans are lentils, granted, so maybe it out to be 10-pulse soup?) and throwing in random veggies I found in the back of my fridge, so I'll have a comforting, warm, and healthy stash of leftovers for days to come. I only had chicken broth in the pantry, so it's not vegetarian and won't count for my one strict veggie day a week, but it's still largely plant-based protein and lots of goodness, plus baby likes beans so hopefully I can tempt her to eat some since her appetite is slowly coming back.

See why we say non-lazy and overachiever....most people make like a 3 bean salad, or 5 bean soup, you come in dropping the hammer with a 10 bean soup!!! with veggies and other goodness no less, I'm not much into full veggie modes, but that sounds good enough that even I would try it.

hope you and the little one keep feeling better.

MITCH! HIIIII!

It sounds impressive, but I buy kits from the Women's Bean Project, which is a cool local nonprofit. The kit comes with all the beans mixed together and a bag of seasoning, so all you need is broth, canned crushed tomatoes, and then any veggies you might want to throw into the mix. It's literally a lazy person's dream. As far as going full veg, I try to do it once a week (better twice) for purely environmental reasons. This is my second year doing it now.

I disappeared from the internet over the weekend, as usual. That said, for a quick recap, my Friday practice ended up rescheduled to Saturday, so I went and did that, followed by some lifting right after to get my second day for the week in. Week 1 totals:

  • Lifting: 2/2
  • Aerial: 4/2
  • Tracking: 6/7
  • Reading: 1/2 books for the month

The weekend itself was packed with activity as usual - a little aerial, a lot of family time, some time with friends, lots and lots of chores. Sunday is always a full rest day for me, so I'm really starting off week two today. It's going to be a yoga day, so nothing specifically tracked. Tentatively aiming for:

  • Lift: Tues, Thurs, Sat
  • Aerial: Tues (group meeting and practice, might be more talking than flying so we'll see if it actually counts), Weds (advanced fabric), Fri (doubles practice with scene partner)
  • Food: Maintain daily tracking, cut down calories a little this week
  • Reading: ACTUALLY DO IT INSTEAD OF ZONING OUT TO YOUTUBE, take at least an hour tonight after baby is in bed to make it further through my book
