Ramping down lifting so you can have some strength left over for other things? SAY IT AIN'T SO. 😜

You're doing awesome.

It occurs to me suddenly that we might be in similar lines of work???? Also, there are rumors flying about that my company may go to unlimited vacation for the bad reasons, but honestly I would LOVE for this to happen, because I would not feel the least bit guilty going back to 5-6 weeks off a year, which was what I had with my former employer. The potential to take sick days alone is staggering. I want it in my life.

Yes, "too much" is more trying to acknowledge that others may feel that way rather than that I do. 😂 I have... a few more in mind already, too. You know how it is.

On 1/11/2020 at 1:23 PM, Mad Hatter said:

So how many weeks do you consider reasonable for unlimited vacation?

Well, I have 4 weeks at my current job plus the week between Christmas and New Year's as a holiday week, so I'm working with 5 weeks at the moment. We will see how the job pacing/load is in the new role, but I think I want to take a minimum of 3 and try not to go over 4 weeks, for now. That is a bit contingent on what holidays they close for, too.

On 1/11/2020 at 1:23 PM, Mad Hatter said:

Hmm I wonder if that’s even legal here, I believe here you need to take a minimum amount of vacation no matter what...

Oh, wow, you actually have to take it? Not just have it available? That's kind of awesome.

Day 1.5

Friday, I lifted. My hips were still feeling very not good, but the workout was okay.

Squats: 2 x 3 x 250#, 3 x 5 x 235#

Paused squats: 3 x 8 x 205#

Bench: 6 x 5 x 140#

Hypers: 3 x 25 x 65#

Kneeling db press: 3 x 10 x 35#

Planky things

Then I went home, did laundry, folded laundry, cleaned my room a bit more, and went to sleep, but the cats woke me up at like 3 AM and I couldn't fall back asleep.

Day 1.6

I wound up going to the mock meet after all -- the logic made sense, I promise. My body was exhausted, but these things always excite me, so I had plenty of manic energy to lean on. My squad started on floor -- I did full tumbling, but fell a bit on my first pass, the double salto pass. My choreo needs a whole lot of crisp-ifying still, but we're still working on that. On balance beam, I made it my goal to do the back handspring in my routine. I did one warm-up on the low beam and then one on the high beam, and then it was time to shine. My routine in general was not good, but I did throw it (woo!) and continued to try to cement it into normalcy instead of a freak occurrence of bravery. I vaulted a front handspring vault for the first time since April, I think, and it was just fine. For bars, I did my routine from the end of last year which does not include a toe shoot because I wanted something I could actually connect together confidently, so that went well. But yeah, hey, we're back to all around! Most of my events are at like... 70% of where they need to be. Which is okay because right now my first meet isn't until February 23. We've got time to get there.

After the mock meet was a brewery + bbq brunch, then napping, then a nice dinner out to celebrate my new job, then closing out one of my bars with some friends.

Day 1.7

Got up, got iced coffee horchata (❤️) and a bagel, and brought my friend to the lifting gym, even though I didn't have much planned and probably could have used the rest day, lol.

Front squat: 6 x 3 x 185# --> oh boy, I forgot about front squat bruising

Bench: 6 x 5 x 135# with pauses

Romanian deads: 4 x 8 x 185#

Pull-ups: 3, 3, 2

Then we met another friend at a different brewery and then more people out for an early-ish dinner and more drinks at my fave bar, back home, and tried to go to bed early but kind of failed and I had trouble sleeping again because the cats were being total brats. S'all good, though.

Lifting: bench 1RM tested - 0/1, double deadlift workouts - 1/2, new program - 0/1

Gymnastics: free hip drills - 1/1, beam back handsprings - 3/1, floor routine - 1/1

Life: weekday breakfasts out - 0/1, dinners out  - 2/2, bday highlight video -  0/1, CDMX planning - 4/5

So, great week for gymnastics! Solid work not going too hog wild ordering food out in week 1. I started working on the bday highlight video as well and may or may not get it finished before CDMX but will get it done this challenge, no question. This week will have my bench testing and my last double deadlift workout. I'm fly out on Thursday!

I actually just signed an offer for the new gig, which is writing and content strategy for a totally different industry. Whaaaat~! It's a nice pay increase from my current nonprofit job (shocking, I know) and will be a big change in terms of daily workflow, company size, types of coworkers, etc. I'm excited because I've been at my current org over over six years and have been feeling pretty stagnant for a while now. I'll be starting the first Monday in February. :) My friend in London I want to visit has a wedding the Saturday of the weekend I was planning on going, buuuuut, I might still go anyway? I'm thinking it out. The airfares for the days I want to leave are substantially higher for the days before and the days after, so I might either take a slightly longer trip than I planned and have to ditch my current office a bit earlier than I wanted to orrrrrrrrr just go another time.

Woop! Congrats! I know you've been looking so that's awesome!

If you need a travel buddy just let me know :P

I spent the last 20 minutes on balance beam. I did all of my routine skills and then started doing routines. I did 3 and none of them were particularly good, but it's been a while since I've tried to connect everything together and it's shockingly much more tiring. 😝 I connected two of my acro series, which were just okay. And then, at the very very end of practice, I did 3 back handsprings on the low beam, stared longingly at the high beam, started pacing around, and then just was like WELL WE MIGHT AS WELL. So, I got up and did 2 very scaredy cat back handsprings on the high beam with just the 1 mat (competition style). Neither were very "on" but my hands were on and that is the ONLY THING that matters right now in my fear progression cycle. I went from slowly working down from all 4 mats on Monday to just doing it on the high beam with just one mat on Thursday, and this is a huge personal victory. I need to keep the pressure on in future practices to get this skill really shining and ready to compete without so much mental drama, but this week was truly leaps forward toward that. 🎊

haha! I know that feeling - had to do the same thing when I came back a few weeks ago just to make sure I still could. Congrats on throwing that and getting out of your head :)

Loving the supreme gifs.

Wowzers that is some dramatically fast progress on your fear level on those back handsprings! Way to go!

Mmm iced coffee horchata ❤️

Forcing yourself to back off lifting intensity for Other Things feels like such a bummer sometimes, but it's pretty much always the right choice haha.

I enjoyed it! I don't think I would put it on any of my own personal "best of" lists, but it's short, snappy, and darkly funny. And I don't think I had to wait too, too long on my library's hold list.

Day 2.1

My friend was still in town, so we went to industry brunch at my fave bar and walked around a lot. We had some very good chats. In the evening, I didn't rally enough to go to gymnastics practice, but that meant I managed to go to bed a bit earlier and catch up on sleep.

Day 2.2

Work was pretty busy, but not in a bad way. However, later on, I skipped the gym. I was just noooot feeling up for it, a rare occurrence for me, as you all know. Part of it is definitely because I'm basically just bench max testing and trying to do some deadlifts before I leave for vacation, so it didn't feel that urgent to try to squeeze in another workout. Part was was just like, overall tiredness. BOTH ARE VALID. I went home, took a short nap, cleaned my room some, made more cold brew, and went out for dinner and a few beers.

Lifting: bench 1RM tested - 0/1, double deadlift workouts - 1/2, new program - 0/1

Gymnastics: free hip drills - 1/2, beam back handsprings - 3/2, floor routine - 1/2

Life: weekday breakfasts out - 0/2, dinners out  - 3/4, bday highlight video -  0/1, CDMX planning - 4/5

I am going to lift today though -- getting after that 160# bench. I've also got to pack (lol) and maybe do some laundry for my packing list. I was going to meet another friend for dinner but I may reschedule on her because I'm not sure I'm going to have it all together in time to make it work. I fly out tomorrow and won't be back until next Tuesday night so this space will likely go un-updated.

Day 2.3

I'm not gone yet because I have to pop in and tell you guys I benched 165# in my max testing tonight, competition-style pause and all. 🎊 That's a 10 pound PR over the meet in October. I don't think I had 170# in me, so I didn't go for it, but I'm telling you it's not far away! Awww, yiss. My stupid long bird arms are finally getting stronger. 💪

Bench: 1 x 150#, 1 x 155#, 1 x 160# (PR), 1 x 165# (PR) 🎊

Squats: 4 x 2 x 260#, 5 x 245#

Push-ups: 4 x 15

Deadlifts: 2 x 305#, 2 x 295#, 4 x 4 x 285#

I skipped deficits and some other stuff becauseeee I hit a bench PR, fuck off. I ate buffalo chicken pizza after and now I'm packing and WILL SEE YOU COOL CATS NEXT WEEK WHEN I AM BACK FROM CDMX!

Lifting: bench 1RM tested - 1/1, double deadlift workouts - 2/2, new program - 0/1

Gymnastics: free hip drills - 1/2, beam back handsprings - 3/2, floor routine - 1/2
