RedStone Scraps One, Adds One

Hello hello Rebels! RedStone here, Warrior coming back after a bit of a hiatus. Last night I started a challenge thread over in my home guild, but after sleeping on it, I'm thinking that what I really need is to be here to get me back into the swing of the forums again :)  It kind of makes sense since I do all the things anyway, so here we go again for round two of round one! Which totally makes sense, right?

A bit about me - I started in NF around 2016, and due to my experiences and the friends I made here, made the leap in 2017 to go full time with my fitness career. (Prior to that I was working in the arts and moonlighting as a Kung Fu teacher.) I worked at a commercial gym where I discovered my niche, and recently launched my own business despite some intense fear and anxiety surrounding it. I have had a lifelong relationship/battle with eating disorders and am not shy about discussing it in an effort to normalize the struggle and recovery as it can be a crushingly lonely thing to go through.

I'm a Hufflepuff through and through, a fan of kindness, hard work, self love, and positive reinforcement. And making dinner 🙃I love making spice blends and would love to swap spice recipes with anyone interested!

The Challenge

1. Workouts: 2X runs per week, 2X strength sessions per week

The fine print - after quitting the commercial gym, I was also quitting my ability to workout there, and most importantly, my routine. My days are scheduled differently now and I got a new membership elsewhere for treadmill access and having a place I could clear my head for workouts that wasn't in my home. Just as I was settling into the new routine, I sprained my wrist fairly badly. I'm in a splint and am rather limited with what I can do both body weight and weighted, but there is still plenty of stuff. It was a struggle but I was making it to my runs (and training Kung Fu one handed - I teach several classes a week), but then the holidays hit and some became none. I'm back on my runs and working to show up for my strength based workouts. I've enlisted the help of Mr Red who has expressed interested in getting in more workouts as well - with him there I'll have an easier time moving equipment into a safe position for my wrist. Last night we discussed getting started tonight! I hope it works out well!

2. Nutrition: Practice mindful eating techniques/no alcohol 2X days per week

The fine print - With the stresses of the past year (we also bought a house last Summer), my consumption has become rather mindless and I can feel myself trying to buffer away the stress. The most useful thing right now is to reduce the alcohol intake which has been giving me stomach aches, and also to regain my experience of consumption. What that looks like in my world is three fold: 1, ask myself why I want a thing, observe the reason without judgement. 2, While consuming the thing, take my time and pay attention to the qualities, flavor, texture etc. Observe how it makes me feel. 3, Reflect, without judgement, on how the experience felt to me.

3. Life: Show up for homework 4 or 5X per week, at the correct time.

The fine print - As part of my shifting into business ownership, and under the guidance of my business coach, I've been working on a book over the past year. Starting last week I'm now working with an editor to finalize the content and polish it up for publishing/submitting. My homework is different week to week, but as per the editor's instructions I'm to sit down for only one hour, 4-5 times a week to work, and always at the same time of the day - which is the hardest part for me since my schedule is somewhat erratic. Organizing the empty blocks of time that are normally when I do errands or workout will be the biggest challenge. Today I am bringing my laptop with me on my chore run and if I don't make it back in time (2:30 EST), I can stop at a cafe or what have you to do the homework.

And that's it! As an incentive I will grant myself a spa day for compliance. If I succeed, it will probably need to be in my next challenge to actually implement as I struggle with granting myself permission for these things despite the obvious benefits! Looking forward to meeting some of you and catching up with others ^_^

Heyo! Obvi gonna follow you here. And super excited that your book is in the editing process now - I'm really excited for it to exist in the world!

On the mindful eating practices - did you find it took practice to do the without judgment part? I'm reading them and nodding along, but I suspect that I'd struggle with truly reserving judgment if I tried to implement something similar.

And of course, puff pride!

Yes, I found it extremely challenging when I first started - sometime in Fall 2018 when I doing a workshop with an anti-dieting coach, but it's become second nature and honestly, having that ability in my life now is such a relief. It's never fool proof, sometimes the not-good-enough voices rear their heads, but those days are much fewer.

Worked out with Mr Red. It was... interesting. I did my stuff, he did some of his. I don't think either of us liked doing an evening session, I had just finished with work and he just got home from a brutal commute and I don't think he was happy that he had agreed to it. I'm going to see if he wants to try a morning session next time and see if that's better!

Ok, that is really useful to know! I’ll file that away as maybe a good thing to try when I’ve got emotional / mental space for more things myself! But I’m so, so glad that you’ve found it helpful in keeping the not-good-enough voices at bay (and THANK YOU for being so open talking about your history with ED - I genuinely appreciate it in knowing I’m not alone).

Same! There were so many years that it was secret, so private. I found that being open about it really helped my recovery!

For sure, and just showing up is so important, even if it's a lack luster session, we did the thing and will do the thing again until it's right!

Hello! :) Fellow Hufflepuff here!I find mindful eating hard 😮 Mainly because I forget to be mindful.

Haha totally. It's hard to get back into routine after a break too! So far I've been able to ask myself ahead of time why I want a thing, but have been mostly losing the mindfulness while actually eating, and have yet to get to the after part LOL but heyo, it's a process 🙃

Your greek yogurt banana split looks delicious. I love finding new recipes ❤️ So I will follow along if you provide them recipes and pictures of food stuffs.

UGH it was my second one this week, I saw it on pinterest or someplace like that just had to! Having a buddah bowl right now that's delish, but it's not so pretty after heating and mixing so I'll just list the components:

rice/quinoa mix

crunchy spiced roasted chickpeas

edamame

sauteed pepper/shallot/corn

baby spinach

garlicky peanut/soy/lime sauce

I'm all about finding new/swapping recipes! That Hufflepuff life yo

_____

This week has been going well. No drinking Monday or Tuesday, and one glass of wine at date night last night rather than 2 or 3. Tonight is a fund raiser  at a brewery so I expect I'll have some, but I'm donating services and want to network so I'll be inclined not to over do anyway. Mindfulness surrounding consumption is picking up steam and I'm remembering to pay attention a little bit more everyday.

Got in a run and strength session today, possibly the best workout I've had in awhile! My wrist is starting to feel like it's transitioning from "injured" to "cranky former injury site" and feels a fair bit more comfortable without that splint than with. Everything surrounding it is starting to feel achy from not being used, so I spent some extra time for mobility and strength in the shoulder complex.

Writing is hapenning but I'm finding that the "exact same time everyday" thinking is hindering productivity (and causing enormous stress) rather than helping. I forced it week 1 and part of this week and productivity really declined, and then when I gave myself permission to do it when I was most relaxed and ready, it all started moving again. Afternoons still work well, but I'm going to be a bit more lax about the exact hour and see how it goes for the rest of the week.

Another thing she has been encouraging me to do is to have some non screen time activity blocks as a waking meditation, at least 30 mins at a time. Reaching for the phone every five minutes (even when I'm looking at a computer screen 🙄) has become pretty normal. I belong to an artist collective in my town and used yesterday's co-working session to relax, no screens, and work on a cross stitch that sparks joy. I noticed the screen use more all day, and left it at home for date night, surprise surprise I felt way more focused and present!

Thursday is marching.

Sounds like you're adjusting the habit intelligently to suit you! I feel like that "same time everyday" advice probably works better for people who don't have high variance in their work schedules day to day.

Sounds wise. You tried following her way rigorously (laptop with you on a run!), but that much rigidity isn't helping. Sounds to me like you're still holding to the spirit of it.

We are not sinners trespassing in the garden of an angry God.

HAHA - I hope so! And almost literally at that... I did throw my laptop in my purse when I went to run errands one day in case I didn't make it back and had to stop at a cafe or something. The whole afternoon was very stressful! We had originally talked about the goal of the practice and I really do think I'm keeping in the spirit of it!

Yeah, me too ^_^ It feels like an ongoing work in progress but I also have noticed how much it's effected the quality of my days over the long run. TBH I find it annoying in the beginning when I have to remember to do it, but it's getting easier lol

_____

Today should be relatively easy, short workday, painting my dreams in the morning, writing and cross stitch in the afternoon. My cousin is coming over this weekend and I'd like to put away some holiday decorations to make some more space for the table - he's coming to help Mr Red brew beer!  I like being around it, the wort smells really good and maybe they'll let me drink a cup of that if it doesn't disrupt the process.

I'm not 100% when I'm going to get my second run in. I could do it today but I like to space them out more. Tomorrow I have a Kung Fu class in the morning and then my cousin visiting, so I guess that leaves Sunday! Saying it out loud now for accountability/manifestation.

Heyyyyyy!

Haha yeah, but that's on me, life gonna life and all that. But so far this has been good, I'm not feeling overwhelmed with life stuff outside the forums vs inside, and I'm starting to feel responsible for getting in here to update/be accountable, so I think it's working. I know I was always kinda keyed into the Rebel systems for multi disciplinary training, but I do love my Warriors ❤️

The sprained hapenned on the Monday before Thanksgiving, (going on week 8 soon?) and fun fact, the xray showed that my ulna is disproportionately long to the radius so I'm pretty susceptible to wrist injuries anyway - explains a LOT from my gymnastics of yore! It hapenned on basically the reverse of a BB clean, heavy, but not out of my comfort zone, -but I was just moving the bar for a client and wasn't working out so I wasn't warm etc. Note to self? Don't be lazy moving a loaded bar lol

I think the most disconcerting thing at the moment is that even tho the pain is decreased significantly and it's finally starting to feel healed", there's still swelling. I might try a heat/ice flush this weekend, but if it's still there next week I'll go to my follow up appt pain or no pain :D

_____

Otherwise I'm calling it a very successful week. Cousin arrived early on Saturday to start the beer making process with Mr Red and stayed over night. We did all the hang out town stuff on Sunday - farmers market, banjo shop, brunch etc. He ended up staying until about 5pm and then I squeezed in a call with a friend in need, and managed to make it out for my mahjonng game at 6, so missing the run was more about not dissing my cousin. It was a pretty packed day, possibly not super relaxing, but I got a nice bubble bath in at 10p. (Have a mentioned I've developed a bit of a bath habit? I get in there about 3X a week)

While cousin was here he introduced me to the much smaller brewing process of (practically non alcoholic) ginger beer! It makes really lovely herbaceous naturally carbonated ginger based stuff, and takes a fraction of the time as beer. (And I'm really not such a big fan of beer anyway). I started a bug under his guidance (kind of like a sourdough starter) and hopefully will be able to try making some in the next week or so! This seems like a really fun option for evening beverages and I kind of love the idea of the process/ceremony for making it.

This week is a little wacky - today is a holiday here and everyone is off so of course it's my busiest day of the week 😂 Mr Red is home and I need his help to carry some lumber for a project and bring it to friends house who are letting me do some cutting and staining in their garage. Mr Red will be out of town until Sunday, so this evening is kind of the best bet, especially with our friends being off of work too. (The wood is to build a frame for my Kung Fu dummy that I'll be hanging during an informal workshop here over Chinese New Year - a week from Friday, so I'd like to get the sanding and staining process started and over with!)

But the most exciting bit, and something that will impact my challenge, this Wednesday is a retro roller skating party my dearest closest friend is coming in from Pennsylvania and staying over night for it! I'm so excited to see her, and skating will replace one of my running sessions for the week. I'm going to wear a dope outfit. I. LOVE. SKATING!!!!!

This seems like a really fun option for evening beverages and I kind of love the idea of the process/ceremony for making it

Just don't bottle it with any significant amount of residual sugar still in solution. ;)  I'd also recommend malt based kombucha!

...but I'm adorable! Ask anyone who doesn't know me...

No splodey bottles! I'm really looking forward to exploring different tea recipes! Any favorite flavor combos?

I'm pretty boring - plain black tea is an easy base to add cordials to, if you want 'safe' (ie. low waste) experimentation. Rooibos is fun to play with (but it won't keep your scoby happy long term), as are ginger/lemon herbals. I'm a sucker for anything peach, and there's a local spiced apple tea that's also really lovely. There are no wrong answers!
